No Game No Life is Death Note but on Comedy crack. The main characters of each anime are highly intelligent, and they both play mind games with anyone that they are against. It’s no secret that Light was a manipulative, gas-lighting character.

Shina and Sora are the mcs of this anime. They are also siblings too! They were transported to a fantasy world where they are forced to play games and gamble with their lives.

Although Death Note and No Game No Life are entirely different in their dark tones (NGNL isn’t necessarily dark), their characters have outstanding deduction skills and are strategic when push comes to shove in intense moments.

In both shows, the watchers witness a constant battle between two sides trying to up one another. Death Note is a lot heavier in regard to drama whereas, No Game No Life is more colorful.

19) Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown is a story that revolves around a high school student who is dragged into war. Although, Shu Ouma is not a normal student. He has the ability of the ‘Power of the King’s’ which allows him to draw weapons from other people.

Upon learning about his ability, Shu joins a resistance group called ‘Funeral Parlor’. Their main objective is to restore Japan’s independence from GHQ.

What attracted me to this anime was the fact that this 17-year-old boy has the weight of the world on his shoulders. From my opinion, Light felt that same burden. Shu and Light have this incredulous power to help change the world for the better.

Now were they always 100% ethical in what they believed in? I’m not going to be the judge of that. But it’s interesting to view psychological effects that can occur as one battles with this burden.

18) Death Parade

Death Parade is an anime where there is no heaven or hell after death. But there is a bar in between unconsciousness and reincarnation. I, myself, am a religious person, however, this was very eye opening to watch. For there to be a reality where there is no hereafter was definitely new for me.

Like Death Note, Death Parade is heavily focused on bestowing judgment on strangers. It’s hard to judge people. Who has the right to?

17) Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate is about the abuse of what can happen if you tamper with time travel. The main character is a self-proclaimed scientist by the name of Rintarou Okabe. His ‘office’/home is pretty shabby so one wouldn’t expect his experiment- The Phone Microwave– to work. But what if it miraculously does?

In both Death Note and Steins;Gate, the main characters are trying to change the world. Both Plots require critical thinking in pressure pact situations. I tried to summarize Steins;Gate as vaguely as possible because you shouldn’t know exactly what will happen when you first start on it. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

16) Parasyte

If you are comfortable with gore and dysmorphia, this is the anime for you! Lemme give you the rundown of Parasyte. Parasytes are monsters that tear apart and eat humans. I know you’re uncomfortable, but I’m not going to lie to you! Their palate calls for humans.

Anyways, the main character Shinichi Izumi, who goes by the nickname Migi, is a high school student who unfortunately is– guess what? He gets infected by a parasyte.

Like any teenager that gets bitten by human monsters, he’s conflicted. Migi decides to keep this biting situation a secret (much like Light’s tendency to keep dangerous secrets).

Migi is now at risk of Parasyte attacks given that his brain is still intact. He is fighting off insanity while trying to protect the Earth from these invading aliens—the Parasytes. Like Light, Migi is trying to save humanity, but will he lose his humanity in the midst of it?

15) The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland is focused around three kids named Emma, Ray and Norman. The three live in a center with other children. Their intelligence is constantly being tested, but they seem happy to play with one another. Their dear Mama takes care of them, as she is the only adult at the center.

Some might say she is even monitoring them.

Now, I’m going to be very honest with you, watch the first season then read the rest of the manga because CloverWorks, the studio that adapted The Promised Neverland, did not properly follow the manga as it skipped multiple arcs of the plot.

14) Hunter x Hunter

I’m not crazy, I promise. HxH is similar to Death Note because Gon, the main character, is obsessed with finding his father who is a world-renowned Hunter. Gon will literally do whatever it takes to achieve his goal. So, Gon tries to become a Hunter.

The one thing I would like you to keep in mind is to watch Gon’s sanity. Compare him to the other kids around him. Personally, I don’t believe him to be as childlike as his character portrays.

13) Attack on Titan

Like Death Note, AoT is painfully realistic. Death, crimes, greed and desire is true in this story. AoT’s main character is Eren Yeager, who watched his beloved mother being eaten by a titan when he was only a kid. Like most main character’s, his goal is to avenge the people, especially his mother and to destroy the titans.

But what happens when humans are not as different as titans? What happens when humans become monstrous in Eren’s eyes?

Attack On TItan

Both Eren and Light throughout their respective storylines are seen to struggle internally with themselves and the worlds they live in.

Although realities can be different compared to each other, they are built off the same foundation, yin and yang. However, that does not mean evil is equal in magnitude to good in everyone’s perception.

12) Mirai Nikki

Mirai Nikki Gankutsuou:

So, Mirai Nikki is pretty messed up in general. But just because something is so morally warped doesn’t mean it isn’t thrilling. Mirai Nikki is a thriller that really shows how raw a person acts when they are truly being threatened.

Their happiness, comfort and especially their lives are threatened. It’s a one-for-all situation where only one person should be left alive in the dimension they are living in.

Light from DN is able to write future deaths, whereas Mirai Nikki’s main character has the ability to see the future and his possible death.

11) Talentless Nana

Talentless Nana is centered around a group of teens who have extraordinary supernatural capabilities called Talents. These teens enhance their powers at an Academy on an isolated island to fight the enemies of humanity that have invaded Earth.

However, the main character, Nanao Nakajima of the group does not have a talent. Yet, he calls himself the “true enemy of humanity”. He is dead set on exposing people, just like Light from Death Note.

10) Psycho-Pass

Japan enforces the Sibyl System which determines the threat level of their citizens. How do they do that? Well, they simply look at each and every citizen’s mental state to determine their Pyscho-Pass or criminal intent. With how technology is nowadays, this doesn’t seem impossible.

Like Death Note, Psycho-Pass deals with this obsession with crime and judgement of people. Those with the power to get rid of anyone that seems evil truly believe that they are doing this for the world’s sake. People are a lot more complex than just the category between evil and good.

9) Darker than Black

Darker than Black takes place in Japan where Hell’s Gate appears along with Heaven’s Gate located in South America. No one knows what purpose these gates hold.

Ever since Hell’s Gate appeared, certain people have emerged with special abilities. These select people are known as Contractors. The Contractors are hired by nations around the world as spies, assassins, and agents used to retrieve confidential information.

The Contractors are viewed to have no emotions, making their horrific jobs easier on their ethics, or rather lack thereof. They are very rational, and they rely on a more left-side, stepwise brain analysis.

Darker than Black has an ambiguous plot where its detective elements found in the characters try to outdo the police. Much like Light and his idée fixe with justice.

8) 91 Days

91 Days

91 days is about Avillo Bruno whose prime objective is to avenge his loved ones. Angelo Lagusa, who is Avillo before he took on the secret identity of Avillo as part of his master plan for revenge, was just a child when he lost everything.

His parents and younger brother were slaughtered by the Vanetti mafia family. Avillo then embarks on a journey to find each and every one of his family’s murderers. Once he does locate them, he plans each of their deaths by strategically infiltrating the mafia. He goes on to kill the high-ranking officers in the mafia as another form of his revenge.

There are plenty of plot-twists in 91 days like Death Note. Also, both main characters are driven by the need of trying to make things right- either by revenge or killing strangers.

7) Terror In Resonance

Now, Terror In Resonance is interesting. The story revolves around two boys by the name of Nine and Twelve. Such generic names, right? I’m just kidding. These boys have gone through so much without my needless jokes.

Nine and Twelve are the masterminds behind the Sphinx. They’re not supposed to exist. But it’s a wonder that they do in this world of greed and manipulation. The Sphinx’s main goal is to destroy the city and hide all their tragedy.

Say, what’s their tragedy? Nine and Twelve were part of a secret experiment conducted by the Rising Peace Academy. The RPA was used to develop twenty-six orphans into intelligent, human weapons. Death Note and Terror in Resonance both beautifully convey humanities’ greed that transgresses past sanity.

6) Moriarty The Patriot

Moriarty The Patriot takes place in the late 19th century where Great Britain is the leading empire of the world. It also appears that Britain is also the leading home of evil acts to which William James Moriarty is determined to purify. William is very bent on removing all the evil people living in Britain.

However, his purification is not far from destruction and murder. But that shouldn’t be a problem because it’s for the greater good. Right?

5) Black Butler

I love Black Butler. It was one of the first anime I really got into. The plot centers around Ciel Phantomhive, the Queen’s watchdog.

He is the watchdog of England, but he wasn’t able to live the life of a naïve puppy. Ciel’s only fourteen. He lost his family in a fire that was strategically conducted by a group of demonic nobles. Ciel was the only survivor, and unfortunately, he was to be used as a sacrifice to achieve a deal with the devil.

Unexpectedly, the nobles who performed this ritual were all slaughtered by a powerful demon named Sebastian. In the quick of it all, Ciel decides to give up his soul for the demon’s loyalty. A loyalty to find each and every one of his family’s murders.

4) Monster

Monster’s main character is Dr. Kenzou Tenma who is an elite neurosurgeon. The conflict of the plot occurs when he strives in what he believes in and chooses to perform surgery on a little boy named Johan. Johan survived his family’s massacre with a severe head injury instead of the town mayor.

Unfortunately, because of his decision, the mayor dies. Dr Kenzo’s life becomes chaotic, and it gets worse after nine years.

Monster deals with the ideal morals people carry as well as their own monsters deep inside of them.

Hell Correspondence is a website where only people with such a heavy grudge can click on. They can write anyone’s name and that very person will be sent straight to hell.

To me, that sounds very much like Death Note with the whole writing one’s name and sending them to their doom.

2) Another

ANOTHER

You know, I remember when I first watched Another. It left me horrified at how far people will go for their desires. The chills I got when I came across the plot twists reminded me of Light’s madness. If you like horror, then why don’t you check this one out!

Another is a Supernatural Thriller that is focused on Koichi Sakakibara who transfers into Yomiyama Middle School. There he meets Mei who is isolated from the entire class. Mei is somehow linked to a string of horrific deaths that have all been left unsolved.

Mei’s isolation is not limited to her school, but instead, it’s as though she doesn’t exist. Well then why can Koichi touch her? And when I mean touch, I mean the innocent, curious kind. You know, the touch to see whether or not she’s even alive?

Since I care about you all, I’m not going to say anything else. Just watch it. It’s Another Death Note. Did you catch my joke there? That one’s pretty clever if I do say so myself.

1) Code Geass

Code Geass

Code Geass is a thrilling and heart wrenching anime to watch. It’s easily in my top ten anime list given that this is just a typical hero, happy-go-lucky story. The main character, Lelouch, is the eleventh prince of Britannia.

Lelouch was only ten years old when his mother was murdered. Unfortunately, his six-year-old sister at the time was also involved in the horrendous shooting, leaving her unable to walk and see. Lelouch is determined to use his Geass to achieve such selfless goals; to destroy the Britannian Empire, create a safer world for his sister Nunnally vi Britannia, and to find whoever killed his mother.

A Geass is a supernatural ability which can affect a desired group of people or a specific person. There is a Geass to alter memories, command absolute obedience upon direct eye contact, and ect. Lelouch has the ability to manifest Absolute Obedience, but like any power, there are certain limitations.

As the plot progresses, we watch Lelouch put his own sanity on the line to fight for what he so desperately yearns. Doesn’t that ring a bell to you? Kind of sounds like Light from Death Note, no?

Conclusion
