37+ BEST Space Anime Of All Time!

Updated November 11, 2022 by Ernie

Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a great time. Did you miss us? Well, we missed you! Today 38 Best Space Anime is our topic. I haven’t watched much space anime, but these are my favorites.

Ever since I was a kid, I was terrified of Space and the Sea. I dont know whats up or down there. The feeling I get from simply imagining myself in either one of those locations is the same feeling I get when I am in the dark. I have no idea what’s in front of me, and that alone is horrific.

That’s why I’m so grateful for anime. I get to go on adventures in space or in the sea in the comfort and safety of my own home. But even though I’m not in any kind of danger, I am still able to feel the thrill, fear, and curiosity of the character’s.

It’s amazing, and these anime are guaranteed to make you feel the same. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Outlaw Star takes place on the planet Sentinel 3, which is colonized and located outside Union Core space.

Its ironic because when Gene was 14, his father was murdered in a space pirate attack. This event traumatized Gene, manifesting a fear of space within him. I wonder how he will deal with now being an owner of a state-of-the-art spaceship!

(I think I’m just being too harsh right now. I usually am like this when I start ranking, but only for this time, I will accept criticism. Just kidding, you are all welcome to judge me. But at least be respectful!)

Our main character for this series is called Shiro. Unlike most anime, Shiro isnt all that special. He fails in becoming a navy pilot for the Royal Space Force of the Honneamise Kingdom. Shiro has never been to space, so this took a toll on him.

To make matters worse, he has to attend a funeral for a fellow cadet of his! Poor guy! But things take a turn when he encounters Riquinni Nonderaiko, a girl who is very enthusiastic about space exploration. Maybe a bit too much.

Duration25  mins. per ep.

Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars is about the battle between Gauna aliens and mankind. But I guess its not really a battle if humans are constantly being eaten by them. Its more of a one-sided fight.

Just a side note, this isnt the first part of the Knights of Sidonia series. You have been warned. This anime contains the final battle between humans and Guana.

Like the title suggests, love is woven in the stars between Tsumugi (a hybrid of Guana and humans) and Nagate-the main character of the anime!

12) Gunbuster

Gunbuster
Title Gunbuster
GenreMecha, Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy
Type OVA
Episode 6
StudioPolygon Pictures
Premiered Autumn 1988
Duration30  mins. per ep.

Like most of the series on this list, Gunbuster is about a war between humanity and this mysterious, powerful alien civilization.

One thing is clear about these extraterrestrials though, and obviously, they aren’t here to tangoThey want to eliminate all of mankind, but I don’t need to tell you that. Seeing that you are interested in space anime, I can assume you’ve got taste and brains.

To fight these aliens, humans created enormous robot weapons that are piloted only by the best of the best.

This sounds a lot like the new series 86 which recently was released this year. Although 86 isn’t focused on space, it’s definitely a banger that you would like. Think of 86 as an honorable mention. You’re welcome.

Im sorry, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to write a serious plot description for this awesome anime and its not working.

Our main character Johnson is a submissive company worker. Bear with me, it gets funnier. So, Johnson had no clue that he was this infamous space pirate that is presumed to be dead.

The plot is fantastic, but man this is ridiculous. Like imagine waking up and realizing Im not me, Im someone else.

He goes from pushover to I’m going to push you off

Johnsons memories were altered, so after he recovers his past, he embarks on an expedition into the galaxy. Why? To find embark on adventures once more.

Title Space Brothers
GenreComedy, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life
Type TV
Episode 99
StudioA-1 Pictures
Premiered Spring 2012
Duration24.  mins.

Space Brothers is a good, comedic space anime. Its about two brothers named Mutta and Hibito making a promise to each other that they will one day become astronauts.

On a summer night in 2006 when they were both little, they saw a UFO in the sky! I remember when I thought I saw a UFO when I was eight. It wasn’t a UFO; it was my moms white slipper flying in the air because I was outside way past my curfew.

Mutta is the eldest brother, which is why I clicked with him more than I do with Hibito. After nineteen years, Hibito achieves his dream by joining the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, whereas Mutta has just been fired from his automotive company.

But Mutta doesn’t give up. He is determined to venture out in space with his brother.

Tylor did not get this position because he has some dormant OP ability. He got it because he was lucky!

7) Planetes

Planetes
Title Planetes
GenreDrama, Romance, Sci-Fi
Type TV
Episode 26
StudioSunrise
Premiered Fall 2003
Duration25 mins. per ep.

I love the idea of Planetes. We tend to forget that we are always polluting the Earth. So, its not a surprise to see that weve trashed space in 2075.

The story is about how all this garbage is piled up in space, and this is a large threat to spacecraft and travelers. The litter is so bad that a space debris collection agency is formed.

However, this agency doesn’t have enough funds to properly function. Again, this isn’t surprising. It is 2021 for us and we have a hole in our ozone layer. Our global temperature has been exponentially increasing over the years (compared to the data in history), yet I don’t see enough laws being set to protect our world.

I don’t mean to get off track, but this is an important topic that needs to be discussed, and Im glad that anime is a vehicle for that discussion.

6) Aldnoah.Zero

Aldnoah.Zero
Title Aldnoah.Zero
GenreAction, Sci-Fi
Type TV
Episode 12
StudioA-1 Pictures, TROYCA
Premiered Summer 2014
Duration23 mins. per ep.

Our biggest fear is the reality of Aldnoah.Zero. Its about a war between humans and aliens from Mars. Aldnoah.Zero didnt begin with war, but there was tension between the two species.

Hell broke loose when there was an attempt to assassinate the Princess of Mars. Murdering a royal figure of an opposing colony is never a good idea. I thought w’eve learned this by now. We humans will never learn.

Also, the Princess of Mars just wanted peace. She came to Earth hoping that to fix the ties between humans and her own kind. But no! Humans always ruin everything.

Not only do you have aliens fighting to kill you, but these are advanced extraterrestrials. These Martians have special technology called Aldnoah.

Who will win this battle?

5) Legend Of The Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Title Legend Of The Galactic Heroes
GenreDrama, Sci-Fi
Type OVA
Episode 110
StudioK-Factory, Kitty Film Mitaka Studio
Premiered Winter 1988
Duration26 mins. per ep.

The original show of Legend of the Galactic Heroes consists of 110 episodesso I wouldn’t recommend this series if you are only looking for anime to binge on a Saturday night.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a very ruthless writing style. You should be scared because they aren’t afraid to kill off your favorite characters.

The story is about a 150-year standstill between the Free Planets Alliance and the Galactic Empire. It follows the rise of power of two men belonging to opposite sides.

4) Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin
Title Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin
GenreAction, Sci-Fi
Type OVA
Episode 6
StudioSunrise
Premiered Winter 2015
Duration1 hr. 11 mins. per ep.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin focuses on the battle between Earth and the Zeon Dukedom. The Gundam Franchise is enormous, so if I mention anything here, I might potentially spoil the series before and after it.

The reason why I specifically chose this anime rather than the other Gundam parts, is because Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin caused an uproar in the anime community.

Its been labeled as the best season in the franchise. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is not about young kids fighting each other and learning a bunch of corny life lessons. The story heavily focuses on military and political elements that help make the anime shine.

This series is a very realistic and mature portrayal of people and families struggling to live in a war.

You’re crazy if you didn’t expect Cowboy Bebop to take the #1 place. Its a phenomenal anime to watch even if you aren’t that interested in space.

Its about a crew of space bounty hunters. The series is composed of standalone episodes, but their writing somehow makes everything connected.

The owners of a spaceship called Bebop are two bounty hunters known as Spike and Jet. As bounty hunters, they collect criminals for cash. Faye Valentine and Edward later join their crew.

In the standalone episodes, we see each members past and what led up to their downfall.

Cowboy Bebop has amazing animation, a fantastic soundtrack, well-written characters with emotional backgrounds, and an astounding plot.

Although Planetes is not number one, it is my favorite plot-wise in this list. I spent most of my childhood growing up in a big city. There was a lot of litter, but because I grew up in the environment, all that garbage in the streets faded away as normal

This anime is yet another splendid example that provides a true depiction of IRL problems.

All of these anime in this list are fantastic, and yes, some of them have arguably old animation styles. But that doesn’t impact the story of the series as a whole. In fact, I found it to play in its favor
