City of Darkness is a finished Manhua that consists of 132 chapters. Its genres are Action and Martial arts.

This series is about how the main character is admired greatly in his Triad gang. He loved that he became the leader’s prodigy at this point.

What could go wrong?

Well, everything. He’s got everything to lose. And in one night, he has lost everything he’s worked hard for; his position, credit, and respect.

The City of Darkness follows the classic trope of the main character being betrayed, and thus embarks on a journey of revenge!

Type: Manga

Storyline:

After a war, the world needs some entertainment to get them through their traumatic experience. How? By watching cyborg boxing matches.

Yeah, you heard me right. In this manga, boxers are now killing machines- literally. They are cybernetically augmented, meaning that they are not entire humans. Machinery parts are embedded in their body.

I know, wild. But not the good kind.

Our main character, Levius, is one of these fighters. Will he survive through this tech-modified mayhem?

But Beni has it rough too. She’s constantly bumping heads with her father, and one day, she’s fed up with him. The Princess tries to commit suicide, and that’s when she meets Kagetora.

32/40

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Gun x Clover follows the adventures of Morito Hayama. The problem is, Morito is pretty boring. He doesn’t live an exciting life.

Morito attends Mikado High School. This isn’t your regular AP/SAT high school. It’s a school that trains its students to become the best bodyguards. Personally, I’d take that over studying Integrals and Derivatives.

But that all changes when he is suddenly responsible for escorting a high profiled person. Let me add that no escort has ever returned back alive.

Do with that what you will.

Storyline:

If any of you has participated in your school’s sumo wrestling teams, then you know how important weight is in any battle.

However, weight in the manga Sumo of the Rising Sun is not even considered. These sumo battles are merciless fights of survival.

Our main character Ushio wants to go pro in sumo wrestling, but if he does stand out in these tournaments, he may never be able to achieve his goals.

Will he lose or will he fight for his dreams?

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Gamaran is about a martial arts competition that heavily focuses on different fighting styles, and which one will top the other.

It is truly about the survival of the fittest.

Although our main character Gamaran follows the common troupe of wanting to be the most powerful person like any shounen MC, he’s got a lot more underneath the surface.

15) Fist Of The North Star

Fist of the North Star

33/40

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Fist Of The North Star is set where the world is facing the consequences of a post-catastrophe. People are too weak to defend themselves from the warlords that threaten to take what little resources they have.

It’s awful but realistic. All around our Earth, war is destroying generations of the present and future. Just because peace or a truce has been declared, doesn’t mean a war stops stealing lives. And this manga is a great example of that.

Kenshiro is a warrior who lost the love of his life to his rival. He must cross this war-struck land to get his beloved back.

14) Naruto

Type: Manga

Storyline:

Now I know what you’re going to say! What? How can Naruto be on this list? Well actually, Naruto’s training is heavily focused on martial arts and such. If you already know this and you’re questioning why I would question Naruto being included in this list, it’s because I had a long conversation with my brother about this.

He doesn’t believe Naruto heavily focuses on martial arts. You know, he says he’s watched Naruto but I don’t believe him. Who wouldn’t consider Naruto as a martial arts manga?

I think the reason why most people forget the martial arts in Naruto is because of the superpowers the characters have. Like do you see anyone walking about the farmer’s market carrying a Byakugan?

Naruto is shunned by his entire village. He is the son of the fourth Hokage, Minato Uzumaki. But instead of spending a happy childhood with his lovely parents, he spends most of his time playing by himself.

The Nine-Tailed Fox attacks the village when Naruto only has a baby. Nothing seems to defeat this beast. So, what does Minato do? He seals the monster into the body of his baby boy.

As Minato does this, he and his wife are killed.

Although Naruto lives throughout his first years terribly lonely, he desires to become the next Hokage and wants to protect his village.

The same village that isolated him from any form of joy.

Naruto, with intense training in martial arts and ninjutsu, may have a shot at becoming the greatest shinobi of all time.

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Gunnm: Last Order begins when nanotechnology brings Alita back into life by a deceitful scientist. This is a sequel, so I’m very hesitant about discussing this series. I don’t want to be attacked for knowing too much!

The series genres are Drama, Action, Martial Arts, and Sci-FI. So, there’s definitely room for everyone in regards to preferred elements!

The city that Alita is resurrected in is in the midst of a civil war. This civil war started when biochips were known to the public. It caused a clash of opinions—at the very least.

Desperately wanting to stop this battle. Alita joins hands with Nova’s team. Funny enough, Nova is directly related to Alita’s death.

Storyline:

The main character of the manga Teppu is Natsuo Ishido. Man, Natsuo is perfect. There isn’t a single thing she can’t do excellently!

But with great power, there comes great boredom. And that’s exactly what Natusuo suffers from—lack of excitement and challenge. She’s bored!

One day, she meets Yuzuko who is trying to recruit people for the club she is in, the Martial Arts club. Interested, Natsuo decides to see what all the fuss is about.

One thing leads to another, and she finds herself sparring with Yuzuko. Surprisingly, Natsuo does not excel by a landslide in this match.

She gets frustrated—so frustrated that she finds herself in front of Yuzuko asking for a rematch.

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Angel Densetsu is about the rumors of a boy named Seiichirou Kitano. He’s a devil in the making. A real friend whose looks alone are enough to make a man scream. If you say his name, even in a low voice, you best be counting your days.

Seiichiriou has the fate of his classmates in the palm of his hands. He’s too powerful!

May I tell you a secret? Would you believe if I said none of this gossip is true? I’m being serious! Yes, he may seem like a demon just by judging his appearance, but he’s such a cinnamon roll!

Will he be strong enough to prove these rumors wrong, or will he finally be defeated?

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Kengan Ashura is about Ouma Tokita and how he wants to become the greatest martial artist to ever grace Japan.

That’s a big dream to have considering the opponents he has to face to only be regarded as a possible candidate for that!

Do you think Ouma will make it?

7) Feng Shen Ji

Martial Arts Skills Overpoweredness Total
19/20
19/20
38/40

Type: Manhua

Storyline:

Feng Shen Ji is a Historical Fantasy Manhua that focuses on Martial Arts. It’s completed with 38 chapters, so you don’t have to wait for the next update!

This is not your typical Action series. Instead of the main character that you sympathize with at the very start of the story, you get an MC that kind of makes you want to chew his cheeks off. And not in a cute way.

This is a mature, realistic storyline where the MC isn’t this poor, tragic being that goes from 0 to 100 in heartbeat. He’s rather arrogant and weak—which is never a good combo to have as a personality trait.

It’s raw and truthful.

We can see Martial Arts in a more sophisticated light where time is needed to have it perfected.

6) Baki the Grappler

Type: Manga

Storyline:

In my opinion, and I can only speak for myself, this main character has a few screws loose in that head. Baki Hanma wants to be strong enough to defeat his father. Fine, that’s great and all.

But! He participates in a violent battle between inmates that are on death row. The death row. You can train to become a stronger person, that’s acceptable. But now at least try to live!

The risks Baki is more than willing to take in this manga are insane, man.

5) Tough

Martial Arts Skills Overpoweredness Total
19/20
19/20
38/40

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Tough follows the journey of Kiichi and his father who trains him in martial arts. It’s quite similar to Baki where the main character travels in search of strong opponents.

Kiichi travels all over Japan in hopes he will be more skilled in martial arts by the end of it. Tough is a sequel to Koukou Tekkenden Tough. I liked this continuation rather than the original, which is shocking because that’s never the case.

Toughness isn’t simply about fighting. It has a compelling and complex plotline—dare I say, the journey of Kiichi is quite tough. Get it?

4) Vagabond

Type: Manga

Storyline:

Vagabond is an incredible manga to read regardless of its focus on martial arts. We’re all hoping for the Anime adaptation, but it has caused an uproar in the anime community. I need to watch it this weekend, and so should you!

Vagabond is set in the 15th century Sengoku era. It’s about Shinmen Takezo who, as a child, was considered a demon because of his violent personality.

He runs away with his friends at the age of 17 in hopes of finding a better life for themselves. They join the army, only to witness disasters upon disasters.

They are separated, and Shinmen returns home—only to find himself as a criminal in the village and wanted for death.

Will he escape his fate? Or will he be left to hang for the last of it?

3) Shigurui

Type: Manga

Storyline:

The manga Shigurui takes place in 1630 in the province of Suruga, Japan. The story is set at the beginning of the Edo Era. The manga is completed, and it’s aimed at mature audiences.

The plot of Shigurui revolves around the Tokugawa tournament. Although there are a lot of battles, there is one specific one that the readers are waiting for.

Shigurui follows the incidents that led up to a certain duel.  The tension that is built up to the match between a blind samurai and a one-armed swordsman is unfathomable.

I would like to reiterate that this is not a manga aimed at younger audiences. I’m an adult, and I still get nightmares from the gory scenes in this series. Please do not kid yourselves in saying,” What’s a little blood going to do? It won’t hurt me”.

OH YES, IT WILL. THIS MANGA WILL RUIN YOUR MIND, HEART, AND SOUL IF YOU ARE NOT CAPABLE OF READING THIS.

How? By slaying 1000 men. Nobody wants to live forever once they think about it. But man, it’s pretty hilarious. If Manji is going down, he’s bringing people with him.

We watch to see how Manji and his martial arts skills help in this battle of life and death.

Storyline:

The manga Holyland is a completed series with a total of 182 chapters. Its genres are Action, Drama, Martial Arts, Psychological, and Seinen.

Yuu gets stronger and stronger, to the point where the streets call him thug hunter.

Will he give up and leave this new passion of his, or will he stay and protect his holy place?

Conclusion

Manga Artists Writing An Amazing Fight Scene Be Like. COMMENT IF YOU THINK I'M RIGHT!

And that’s a wrap! I hope you liked this list. I love a good action-based story, and martial arts manga has never let me down.

I found that most of the series on this list are very realistic in regards to the amount of training, time, and dedication required of martial artists. The strength gap from start to finish is properly portrayed in the time span of the characters’ training and grit!

These main characters have gone through hell and back to become stronger. If I was in their shoes, I would have immediately given up. Thankfully for both you and me, I’m not!
