25+ Best Space Anime

Space Anime

Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a great time. Did you miss us? Well, we missed you! Today 26 Best Space Anime is our topic. I haven’t watched much space anime, but these are my favorites.

Ever since I was a kid, I was terrified of Space and the Sea. I don’t know what’s up or down there. The feeling I get from simply imagining myself in either one of those locations is the same feeling I get when I am in the dark. I have no idea what’s in front of me, and that alone is horrific.

That’s why I’m so grateful for anime. I get to go on adventures in space or in the sea in the comfort and safety of my own home. But even though I’m not in any kind of danger, I am still able to feel the thrill, fear, and curiosity of the characters.

It’s amazing, and these anime are guaranteed to make you feel the same. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Reasons to Watch:

Outlaw Star takes place on the planet Sentinel 3, which is colonized and located outside Union Core space.

It follows the main character Gene Starwind and how he became an outlaw. At the start of the series, we see Gene run a small business with Jim Hawking. One thing leads to another, and they find themselves now running the XGP15A-II—they call it Outlaw Star for short!

It’s ironic because when Gene was 14, his father was murdered in a space pirate attack. This event traumatized Gene, manifesting a fear of space within him. I wonder how he will deal with now being an owner of a state-of-the-art spaceship!

(I think I’m just being too harsh right now. I usually am like this when I start ranking, but only for this time, I will accept criticism. Just kidding, you are all welcome to judge me. But at least be respectful!)

Reasons to Watch:

Our main character for this series is called Shiro. Unlike most anime, Shiro isn’t all that special. He fails in becoming a navy pilot for the Royal Space Force of the Honneamise Kingdom. Shiro has never been to space, so this took a toll on him.

To make matters worse, he has to attend a funeral for a fellow cadet of his! Poor guy! But things take a turn when he encounters Riquinni Nonderaiko, a girl who is very enthusiastic about space exploration. Maybe a bit too much.

Reasons to Watch:

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 follows the journey of Yamato to the planet Iscandar. The story is set in 2199, as the title suggests.

Now, this isn’t because Yamato wanted to travel just for the heck of it. It’s because the Gamilas alien race is taking over the Earth. On Iscandar, it is said that there is a device that could possibly save the Earth.

16.7 of 20

8 of 10
32.7/40

Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Space, Mecha, Seinen
Episodes: 1

Reasons to Watch:

Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars is about the battle between Gauna aliens and mankind. But I guess it’s not really a battle if humans are constantly being eaten by them. It’s more of a one-sided fight.

Just a side note, this isn’t the first part of the Knights of Sidonia series. You have been warned. This anime contains the final battle between humans and Guana.

Like the title suggests, love is woven in the stars between Tsumugi (a hybrid of Guana and humans) and Nagate—the main character of the anime!

12) Gunbuster

Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
17 of 20
8 of 10
8 of 10
33/40

Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Mecha, Military, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Space
Episodes: 6

Reasons to Watch:

Like most of the series on this list, Gunbuster is about a war between humanity and this mysterious, powerful alien civilization.

One thing is clear about these extraterrestrials though, and obviously, they aren’t here to tango. They want to eliminate all of mankind, but I don’t need to tell you that. Seeing that you are interested in space anime, I can assume you’ve got taste and brains.

To fight these aliens, humans created enormous robot weapons that are piloted only by the best of the best.

This sounds a lot like the new series 86 which recently was released this year. Although 86 isn’t focused on space, it’s definitely a banger that you would like. Think of 86 as an honorable mention. You’re welcome.

11) Space Adventure Cobra

Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total

10 of 10
35/40

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Space
Episodes: 1

Reasons to Watch:

I’m sorry, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to write a serious plot description for this awesome anime and it’s not working.

Our main character Johnson is a submissive company worker. Bear with me, it gets funnier. So, Johnson had no clue that he was this infamous space pirate that is presumed to be dead.

The plot is fantastic, but man this is ridiculous. Like imagine waking up and realizing I’m not me, I’m someone else.

He goes from pushover to ‘I’m going to push you off

Johnson’s memories were altered, so after he recovers his past, he embarks on an expedition into the galaxy. Why? To find embark on adventures once more.

10) Space Brothers

Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
18 of 20

8 of 10
36/40

(It’s a wonderful story to watch! Please give it a try!)

Genre: Comedy, Sci-Fi, Seinen, Slice of Life, Space
Episodes: 99

Reasons to Watch:

Space Brothers is a good, comedic space anime. It’s about two brothers named Mutta and Hibito making a promise to each other that they will one day become astronauts.

On a summer night in 2006 when they were both little, they saw a UFO in the sky! I remember when I thought I saw a UFO when I was eight. It wasn’t a UFO; it was my mom’s white slipper flying in the air because I was outside way past my curfew.

Mutta is the eldest brother, which is why I clicked with him more than I do with Hibito. After nineteen years, Hibito achieves his dream by joining the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, whereas Mutta has just been fired from his automotive company.

But Mutta doesn’t give up. He is determined to venture out in space with his brother.

9) Space Patrol Luluco

(It’s super cute, which is always a plus in my books!)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Space
Episodes: 13

Reasons to Watch:

Our main character for Space Patrol Luluco is a middle school girl named Luluco. Luluco lives in Ogikubo which is one of the frontier space colonization zones.

Her zone is full of peaceful aliens, but the chick just wants to live an ordinary school girl life. She manages to do so until her father gets frozen.

Clueless on how to fix him, she takes him to his workplace, only to be recruited as a member of the Space Patrol.

So, she’s not living a normal life.

8) The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
18 of 20
10 of 10
9 of 10
37/40

Genre: Military, Sci-Fi, Space, Comedy, Parody
Episodes: 26

Reasons to Watch:

The main character in this series is someone you don’t want to babysit your kids. He is an irresponsible (hint from the title), lazy, easy-going guy. His name is Justy Ueki Tylor.

Well, this reckless, incautious, thoughtless childlike man becomes the Captain of Soyokaze. Soyokaze is a space destroyer.

Tylor did not get this position because he has some dormant OP ability. He got it because he was lucky!

Will Tylor be successful in his position of Lieutenant Commander, or will he crash the ship he doesn’t deserve?

7) Planetes

Planetes
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
18 of 20
10 of 10
10 of 10
38/40

Genre: Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Seinen, Space
Episodes: 26

Reasons to Watch:

I love the idea of Planetes. We tend to forget that we are always polluting the Earth. So, it’s not a surprise to see that we’ve trashed space in 2075.

The story is about how all this garbage is piled up in space, and this is a large threat to spacecraft and travelers. The litter is so bad that a space debris collection agency is formed.

However, this agency doesn’t have enough funds to properly function. Again, this isn’t surprising. It is 2021 for us and we have a hole in our ozone layer. Our global temperature has been exponentially increasing over the years (compared to the data in history), yet I don’t see enough laws being set to protect our world.

I don’t mean to get off track, but this is an important topic that needs to be discussed, and I’m glad that anime is a vehicle for that discussion.

6) Aldnoah.Zero

Aldnoah.Zero
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
18 of 20
10 of 10
10 of 10
38/40

Genre: Action, Military, Sci-Fi, Mecha
Episodes: 12

Reasons to Watch:

Our biggest fear is the reality of Aldnoah.Zero. It’s about a war between humans and aliens from Mars. Aldnoah.Zero didn’t begin with war, but there was tension between the two species.

Hell broke loose when there was an attempt to assassinate the Princess of Mars. Murdering a royal figure of an opposing colony is never a good idea. I thought we’ve learned this by now. We humans will never learn.

Also, the Princess of Mars just wanted peace. She came to Earth hoping that to fix the ties between humans and her own kind. But no! Humans always ruin everything.

Not only do you have aliens fighting to kill you, but these are advanced extraterrestrials. These Martians have special technology called Aldnoah.

Who will win this battle?

5) Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
19 of 20
10 of 10
10 of 10
39/40

Genre: Military, Sci-Fi, Space, Drama
Episodes: 110

Reasons to Watch:

The original show of Legend of the Galactic Heroes consists of 110 episodes, so I wouldn’t recommend this series if you are only looking for anime to binge on a Saturday night.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a very ruthless writing style. You should be scared because they aren’t afraid to kill off your favorite characters.

The story is about a 150-year standstill between the Free Planets Alliance and the Galactic Empire. It follows the rise of power of two men belonging to opposite sides.

4) Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
18 of 20
11 of 10
10 of 10
39/40

(I know what I did, by giving Storyline an 11 out of 10, and I’m proud of it.)

Genre: Action, Mecha, Military, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Space
Episodes: 6

Reasons to Watch:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin focuses on the battle between Earth and the Zeon Dukedom. The Gundam Franchise is enormous, so if I mention anything here, I might potentially spoil the series before and after it.

The reason why I specifically chose this anime rather than the other Gundam parts, is because Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin caused an uproar in the anime community.

It’s been labeled as the best season in the franchise. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is not about young kids fighting each other and learning a bunch of corny life lessons. The story heavily focuses on military and political elements that help make the anime shine.

This series is a very realistic and mature portrayal of people and families struggling to live in a war.

3) Toward the Terra

Toward the Terra
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
19 of 20
10 of 10
10 of 10
39/40

Genre: Action, Military, Sci-Fi, Space, Drama, Shounen
Episodes: 24

Reasons to Watch:

You know how I said Aldnoah. Zero is our biggest fear. Yeah, I forgot about Toward the Terra. Toward the Terra is our nightmare. It’s about humans being controlled by computers while they live on colonized planets. I’m going to throw up.

This is set in the future, where a new race called Mu exists. Mu have special powers. Humans are terrified of Mu because of their extraordinary born abilities. And what do humans do when they encounter beings that are more powerful than them?

They capture them. Thus, Mu all have a shared dream. To live a peaceful life on Earth where they aren’t in danger. Our main character is Jomy. He has no idea that he carries Mu genes. How will he react when he finally realizes?

2) Toonami Space Dandy

39.8/40

Genre: Sci-Fi, Space, Comedy
Episodes: 13

Reasons to Watch:

Toonami Space Dandy is followed by Dandy, our main character, who is an alien hunter searching for aliens. Dandy doesn’t travel alone; he is accompanied by Meow (an alien cat) and a robot called QT.

You’ll know Dandy by that weird hairstyle he’s known for!

This is a comedic sci-fi anime, so you’re sure to have a great time. Dandy and his eccentric crew aboard the Aloha Oe, a spaceship. Dandy just wants to discover new alien species before anyone. We watch him on his epic adventures!

1) Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop
Space
Concept:
Storyline: Animation: Total
20 of 20
10 of 10
10 of 10
39/40

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi, Space
Episodes: 26

Reasons to Watch:

You’re crazy if you didn’t expect Cowboy Bebop to take the #1 place. It’s a phenomenal anime to watch even if you aren’t that interested in space.

It’s about a crew of space bounty hunters. The series is composed of standalone episodes, but their writing somehow makes everything connected.

The owners of a spaceship called Bebop are two bounty hunters known as Spike and Jet. As bounty hunters, they collect criminals for cash. Faye Valentine and Edward later join their crew.

In the standalone episodes, we see each member’s past and what led up to their downfall.

Cowboy Bebop has amazing animation, a fantastic soundtrack, well-written characters with emotional backgrounds, and an astounding plot.

Conclusion

space dr. stone

And that’s a wrap! We’re done with the recommendation, at least for now. It was so fun making this list. I’m not much of a space fanatic, but I can appreciate a good anime when I see one. Especially with Plantes.

Although Planetes is not number one, it is my favorite plot-wise in this list. I spent most of my childhood growing up in a big city. There was a lot of litter, but because I grew up in the environment, all that garbage in the streets faded away as normal

space dr. stone

It was only until I started living on a farm that I realized how sick the Earth is. I got to see sheep and goats drinking from polluted rivers. The soil was brittle, and large chunks of land couldn’t be utilized. It was awful.

This anime is yet another splendid example that provides a true depiction of IRL problems.

All of these anime in this list are fantastic, and yes, some of them have arguably old animation styles. But that doesn’t impact the story of the series as a whole. In fact, I found it to play in its favor.
