What makes it fearsome is that the suicides happen when people are laughing and chatting lively. No pain, no depression, no sadness, and yet they end their life like a play. The manga begins at the train station where 50+ girls are happily chatting with each other. Their laughter makes the scene lively, that is, until the train comes.
They all hold hands together and jump in front of the approaching train. Defaced dead bodies and blood fills the scene. Saya is the only survivor of the mass suicide. Jun has not much interest in his life apart from one thing. He can see ghosts and decides to solve the mysteries behind the paranormal activities around him. The problem is that not all the ghosts are welcoming enough to let Jun enter their personal space. Some of them scare him, and some of the spirits do more. However, Jun has a quiet helper beside him, his long-dead fellow Hayakawa.
Together the duo faces many scary and very scary situations with lots of ghosts and some supernatural stuff. Sometimes they succeed with flying colors, but others barely make it in one piece. It is a must-read manga with absorbable intriguing stories, plus the art is very smooth for a horror manga.

The plot develops as Denji is involved in some blood-soaked fights. The idea of a happy and peaceful life is now beyond reach.
The art in particular makes this one of the best sellers. Imagine a protagonist with chainsaws replacing his limbs, it is frightening right? The images are sometimes indeed disturbing and hard to digest with all the blood and hideous creatures popping from everywhere.

Chapters | 89 |
If you are claustrophobic, a warm warning for you, don’t start this one. Dragon Head is one of the unique manga that gave me a cold sweat. I bet many have the same experience after reading it. The plot is very artistic though of course on a darker side since this is a horror manga.
The plot focuses on Teru, a teenager. He opens his eyes to the grotesque dead bodies of his fellow classmates. After the train derailed, Teru and two of his fellows barely survived. The smell of dead bodies and blood, the unpleasant scene, and the confined space is stomach-turning.
However, the gloomy plot turns dangerous and scary when the trio stumbles upon a mysterious cave. They traverse the cave to find food. Some unearthly, downright ugly, and scary human-flesh-eating creatures chase them. After gaining massive popularity, As the God Wills surprised the Otaku with its series 2. Based on a similar story, it spans a larger ground. After reading As the God Wills, I thought missing school on a day like that would be nothing less than a miracle or perhaps a blessing.
However, as the series came out, my thoughts were nullified. Yasuto Akashi, a class fellow of Shun, was missing from the school on the horrific day of the death games. To meet his friends, he visited the school on the same day only to find that the same chaos was happening worldwide.
Akashi is invited to a separate set of death games with other students who missed school that day. What tough luck! It gave me a horror-filled experience, but I couldn’t avoid the thrill and adrenaline rush at any cost.

Information | |
Title | DRCL Midnight Children |
Genre | Horror, Supernatural |
Type | Manga |
Author | Sakamoto Shinichi |
Status | Ongoing |
Volume | 1+ |
Chapters | 16 + |
DRCL’s plot is somewhat taken from Brams Stoker’s novel Dracula. You will know there is a noticeable difference here if you read it. DRCL is about children with superpowers and unique personalities. The manga is set in medieval times where legends of blood-drinking demons roam.
The concept of the manga is that children born closest to midnight are the strongest. They possess uncanny and never seen before powers. The plot focuses on Mina, a young cheerful and energetic girl. She survives in the academy as the only girl. Mina is determined to succeed in her career with her inhuman strength.
Luke is the male protagonist with some hidden powers, and he disguises himself as Lucy to befriend Mina. The plot develops as the kids see the urge to use their powers to solve the mysterious and supernatural incidents around them. It is not your typical horror manga. The art is aesthetic and bewitching. It is the second reason for the popularity of this manga. The first one is still the plot that is similar to Dracula.
17. Fort of the Apocalypse

Genre | Action, Mystery, Horror, Sci-fi |
Type | Manga |

Volume | 10 |
Chapters | 49 |
Zombies are the very definition of horror and thrill. The next one on my list is another zombie manga. This one, however, is considered one of the best zombie-oriented manga ever. There are many reasons for it. Firstly, the plot is not just outlandishly gory or violent. It has a story, and a very entertaining one at that.
Secondly, the politics and power struggle are the best amidst the apocalypse. The plot focuses on a few prisoners. Not to say, but our MC Maeda is also a new inmate convicted of murder. Life in the prison might have been boring, but life outside the prison would be hell. When Maeda discovered the power struggle and dark secrets of the prison, the outer world was being attacked by zombies.
The plot turns dark and exciting when a prisoner van of infected inmates crashes into the prison. This incident brings the apocalypse right to Maeda’s doorstep. Not like we are being greedy and asking for more, but the author has a plethora of surprises in store for you. It is a must-read for horror and thrilling experiences.

Title | Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show/Shoujo Tsubaki |

Type | Manga |
Author | Maruo Suihiro |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 1 |
Chapters | 8 |
If a manga upsets you, leaves a sour after-taste and gives you chills every time you think of it, then it is undoubtedly horror. The next one on my list is one such tragic horror story that will surely leave you glum for a few days. Like the name of the manga says, it is about a Freak show.
When I say freaks, I literally mean uncanny and monstrous creatures. Mr. Arashi is a savage and brutal man. He runs his play with the help of his collection of freaks, including a snake woman, a mummified man, and a few others. The plot centers on Midori, an orphan enslaved by Arashi. She is forced to work as the caretaker of the monstrous creatures.
Not only that, but she is continuously abused and brutally tortured by Arashi and the freaks. The grisly creatures and the disturbing art will cast a gloomy spell on you. The tale of Midori’s survival begins as she decides to change. It is a psychological horror–based manga with a touch of dark fantasy. A worthy read if you are craving horror.

I must say, horror genre manga are filled with outlandish ideas and disturbing art. The next one on my list is also one such manga with a touch of sci-fi. There is drama and suspense as well, so expect to have something above the ordinary. Hiroyuki, a regular college student, has a hidden personality.
He is a psycho who is obsessed with beauty. After school, he rules a small club filled with members with similar desires. They have created an AI/robot named Litchi to abduct girls for them. However, things take an unexpected turn when finally a girl arrives.
Litchi starts turning human with every passing second, and Hiroyuki begins to lose his rationality. Filled with some unorthodox ideas, over-the-top drama, and romance, and finally gruesome blood splatter awaits you.

If you are an avid horror manga reader, you indeed have read Uzumaki. It is considered one of the best works by the author Junji Ito. He is famous for creating terrifying and horrific stories.
The plot is set in a cursed town in Japan where the people are obsessed with spirals. After unexplainable incidents, they lose their lives. Every chapter of Uzumaki focuses on a unique subject resembling spirals, such as snails, hair, snakes, and storms.
The protagonist Kirie is slowly witnessing the gruesome and disturbing events of the curse. The story develops with Kirie’s ordeals and many more horrific instances. I know the plot seems all over the place, but once you go through the first few chapters, you will see the build-up and thus fear binding you in its spiral.
13. Seeds of Anxiety
Information | |
Title | Funan No Tane/ Seeds of Anxiety |
Genre | Horror, Supernatural |
Type | Manga |
Author | Nakayama Masaaki |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 3 |
Chapters | 72 |
Funan No Tane truly exhibits the essence of horror. It is a collection of horrific incidents based on some superstitions or folklore. The best part is that they are genuinely terrifying and difficult to digest. This manga will surely scare you to death. Since the manga has no main characters, it is easy to describe.
Some random horror stories in action would be the perfect way to tell you about this manga. One story has creepy ghosts, the other has hideous monsters, and the next one has supernatural elements. Some are outlandish and downright gruesome. Like a girl slits her throat in front of innocent bystanders.
You will love the detailed art, but the images sometimes are very disturbing. However, it wouldn’t be scary if it wasn’t the case.
12. Higurashi When They Cry
Information | |
Title | Higurashi: When They Cry-Meguri/ Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Meguri |
Genre | Horror, Suspense, Mystery, Supernatural |
Type | Manga |
Author | Ryukishi 07 (Story), Akase Tomato (Art) |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 38 |
Chapters | 222 |
There are very few horror manga that take season one as the building blocks and create hype for season two. Higurashi is one such manga. I will give a fair warning that the manga is horror because of its supernatural elements. Additionally, season one has only mysteries and fear lurking around. Unless you read season 2, these mysteries will haunt you to death.
The plot revolves around teenagers Rika and Satoko. Their friendship goes way back. Both have opposite personalities but fits together well. The story develops when they join a famous academy and Rika starts to drift apart from Satoko. The loneliness, feeling of betrayal, and jealousy pushed Satoko into the depths of depression and a much darker enigma.
With Satoko turning darker with each passing day, things become weird. However, there is more to the plot, Rika only looks like an average girl, but her 1000 years of life are a secret for later. Ops, did I spoil it? It is one of the best suspense and twisted horror manga and a highly recommended one..
11. Karadasagashi

Title | Karadasagashi |
Genre | Horror, Thriller |
Type | Manga |
Author | Welzard (Story), Murase Katsuoshi (Art) |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 17 |
Chapters | 153 |
Is it just me, or do school corridors and hospital hallways scare the life out of you at night, but still you love them? I can bet it isn’t just me. Karadasagashi is a manga set in an empty school in the dark of night. However, it is also a demonstration of the Hide & Seek game, just a bit more violent, scary and hellish.
The plot begins with a strange and petrifying incident. Haruka, the protagonist, and her friends are in for a game of hide and seek. The group finds themselves transported to their school at midnight. To come back alive, they have to find the body parts of their friend named Asuka. However, there is a catch.
If they fail today, they will automatically restart the game until they succeed. I could have digested it if this was all. But the plot gets dangerously intriguing. The group is chased by a ghostly and awful girl-like being who is up to kill them if she catches up. So, the chase becomes terrifying as the story progresses. The art and horror elements are top-notch and will give you nightmares.
10. Gannibal
Information | |
Title | Gannibal |
Genre | Horror, Suspense |
Type | Manga |
Author | Ninomiya Masaaki |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 13 |
Chapters | 120 |
Has anyone got a chance to watch The Wrong Turn? Well, Gannibal is a little similar to that concept. Also, I think the human flesh-eating trope is trendy these days. Many manga are making use of this concept to instill fear among readers. Gannibal, aka Cannibal, is a manga based solely on human-flesh eating.
I forgot to add the mystery and thrills that are continuously increasing in this one. The plot revolves around Daigo Agawa. His life becomes hell when he gets assigned to a remote village. Initially, the plot is delightful as everyone in the town is sweet and welcoming. However, after a certain death occured, things turn scary and mysterious.
In his search for the culprit, Daigo discovers that he is living among Cannibals, the human flesh-eaters. From then on, his fight against them and the tale of his survival begins. Enjoy this one only to say goodbye to your hunger for a few days; Good Luck!!!

Type | Manga |
Author | Kaneshiro Muneyuki (Story), Fujimura Akeji (Art) |

Volume | 5 |
Chapters | 21 |
It is one of the best action manga, followed by horror. The author’s skill in creating a horrific scene and displaying the mysterious backstory of the characters is exceptional. The manga is firmly based on Death Games. Shun Takahata is a high schooler and not very satisfied with his dull life.
Then, one day, things take an unexpected turn, and his uninteresting life becomes a death game. That’s why they say one should be careful what they wish for. In an odd event, their teacher’s head explodes, and a Daruma doll takes its place. This Daruma doll traps every student in the class in a tricky game. The rules are simple: if you move, you die. Make the Daruma doll stop by pushing its button.
The contradictory rules mark the beginning of the game, and a lot of slaughter ensues. Shun stands as the lone survivor only to find that there is a series of death games, and he just crossed level one. Art, action, thrill, and horror are just top-notch. It is highly recommended for horror addicts with gory blood fights.

Genre | Horror, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense |
Type | Manga |
Author | Okita Yoshito (Story), Murase Katsutoshi(Art) |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 2 |
Chapters | 11 |
This one is very similar to “This Man,” except it is dreary and a bit more horrifying than the former. It is based on the urban legend that a mysterious girl lures people into signing a suicide contract with her and then hangs them. The town of Kongou is under the dark spell of suicide.
Every single case is a copy of the other as everyone dies by hanging themselves. Amidst this horrifying terror Saotome, a college student has recurring dreams of a girl. Like the legend, she makes him sign a suicide contract with her. Saotome’s everyday life is turning dark but becomes darker when he discloses it to a therapist named Hirasaka.
Unbeknownst to Saotome, he signs a suicide contract with her. The slow-paced stalking-like chase begins with horror creeping in on you. Trusting people will surely be a problem after this read, but still a worthy read.

Information | |
Title | Gantz |
Genre | Horror, Action, Sci-fi, Supernatural |
Type | Manga |
Author | Oku Hiroya |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 37 |
Chapters | 383 |
It is time for one of my favorite horror manga. Action-oriented horror manga are accepted widely. They become massive hits in no time as compared to other horror manga. Gantz is one such manga with the best action and horror combo. The plot highlights a lonesome and not-so-special teenager named Kei Kurono.
The story begins with his tragic death that led him to a strange building filled with many like him. Some unusual black spheres emerge, order and equip people to kill nameless, powerful creatures. Kei enters a space filled with monsters of all sorts. This is the world of Gantz. Kei’s character develops with his battles, and as a reward, he is given a chance to return to his daily life.
However, there is a big catch. Those who have once visited the world of Gantz cannot be free of its curse. Kei is summoned again and again to the grisly world, and every time he returns triumphant. It is one of the longest action-packed horror manga with 300+ chapters. The best part is that each and every character is developed perfectly, and the thrill and horror are everlasting.
6. Blame
Information | |
Title | Blame |
Genre | Horror, Action, Sci-fi, Drama |
Type | Manga |
Author | Nihei Tsutomu |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 10 |
Chapters | 65 |
Okay, fellas, so Blame is one of the manga that depicts technological horror and many other bloodthirsty creatures. The art of this manga is exceptional. I am not a hard-core fan of cyberpunk; still, I love how the theme mixes in with the rest. The manga’s plot is all over the place, yet the instances and creativity are on par with any other best manga.
Hence, it is among the cream of the crop in my list. Blame is set in a dystopian world and circles on a single individual named Killy and his deadly adventures. In the Blame world, humans are forced to live and survive in hiding from gigantic flesh-eating monsters. All kinds of creepy and dangerous robots lurk around to prey on the pitiable humans.
In such an environment, Killy is out with his miraculous gun-like weapon in search of a human. This said human is capable of transforming the unruly world of Blame. Fighting the gigantic hideous monsters, battles using strange powers, and the fear of being eaten will give you the adrenaline rush many times. It is highly recommended if you like twisted technological horror stories and cyberpunk.
5. Starving Anonymous

Title | Starving Anonymous/ Shokuryou Jinrui |
Genre | Horror, Thriller |
Type | Manga |
Author | Kuraishi Yuu (Story), Inabe Kazu (art) |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 7 |
Chapters | 64 |
It is one of the biggest hits of the past decade. This manga actually has some otaku comparing it to Gantz, Berserk, and Shiver. Frankly speaking, they aren’t wrong. The plethora of gore, two-story-tall ugly monsters, and unleashed carnage will give you anxiety attacks. The plot is intriguing from the get-go.
Ie, the protagonist, and his friends are going back home. Suddenly, they lose consciousness thanks to mysterious gas in the bus. When they open their eyes, the peaceful scenery has been shifted to a slaughterhouse. Frozen bodies and humans slicing them is the only visible thing.
As they run to find a way out, the environment turns more disgusting and stomach-turning. Extra chubby humans are being fed some liquid. They are then presented to hideous monsters that eat them while savoring them.
Human livestock, illegal experimentation on humans, and whatnot! This underground slaughterhouse is a hell named The Cradle. Leaving this place in one piece is a big no. The art is simply excellent, and the plot is unique. Suspense, stomach-turning events, and horror await you. Are you up for it?
4. Tomie
Information | |
Title | Tomie |
Genre | Horror, Drama, Supernatural |
Type | Manga |
Author | Junji Ito |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 3 |
Chapters | 20 |
Another great work by Junji Ito is Tomie. He is famous for bringing the best horror and scariest stories to the spotlight. Have you ever seen a bewitching beauty? If not, then meet Tomie. She is the manifestation of elegance and beauty from head to toe. People fall in love with her with a single glance.
She is a teenager, and men line up to see her single smile. The plot turns intriguing when the school mourns her death. However, the next moment the same Tomie greets them with a smile. The suspense increases and the terror envelop everyone wondering how Tomei is alive.
You will be hooked when you discover that Tomie is a succubus, and preying on men is her only hobby and satisfaction. This manga is filled with fear, nightmares, suspense, and violent images. The art gets five stars since it becomes too realistic at times.
3. God’s Child
Information | |
Title | God’s Child/ Kami no Kodomo |
Genre | Horror, Drama, Psychological |
Type | Manga |
Author | Nishioka Kyoudai |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 1 |
Chapters | 11 |
One of the scariest manga I have read that succeeded in forcing me to stop midway. But my curiosity is superior. So, I had to challenge myself and digest the plethora of outright scary and creepy events. Unlike its name, the manga is more of psychological horror.
Yet, the straightforward, expressive, violent, and gory themes deeply follow the horror genre. The plot focuses on a child who is aimed to exact revenge on the world. He was ledby his mother to torture and brutally deliver his scary habits to the world in return for his mother’s suffering.
The boy successfully delivers his psychopathic fantasies in the ugliest and most inhuman way you can imagine. The art is realistic, and the story of a boy growing up in blood is surely entangling. He develops into a serial killer named God’s Child. Once you read it, you will have difficulty clearing your head of the horror and violence.
2. Berserk
Information | |
Title | Berserk |
Genre | Action, Adventure, Horror, Fantasy, Drama |
Type | Manga |
Author | Kentaro Miura |
Status | Unknown |
Volume | 41 |
Chapters | 364 |
Aha! This is among my favorites. I know it falls under the dark fantasy genre. However, the idea of a child being born from a hanged corpse is undoubtedly enough to creep you out. Additionally, this manga is based on the “kill to survive” theme.
So, the blood splatter, overall grotesqueness, and the demons make it one of the best and most popular horror manga out there. Guts; the Black Swordsman, is the center of the series. A sad and dreadful childhood leads Guts to become a mercenary. His life is based on killing people for a reward. However, things take an unexpected turn when a demon named Apostles enters his life.
As if this wasn’t enough, Guts seeks revenge on the one who threw him into this hellish pit of blood and killing. His monstrous yet appealing appearance equipped with inhuman strength and deadly weapons will make you see a grim reaper surely. (I am referring to his Berserk mode, scary yet captivating)
What sells this manga is the art, the character development and the perfect blend of thrills and creepiness that is never ending.
1. Shiver
Information | |
Title | Shiver |
Genre | Horror |
Type | Manga |
Author | Junji Ito |
Status | Completed |
Volume | 1 |
Chapters | 9 |
Now then, it is time for the best among the best. If you are a true horror manga fan, you must have read this one or heard of it. Junji Ito is famous for giving spine-chilling and stomach-turning horror stories, including Uzimaki and Tomie. In the horror genre, Shiver is considered a masterpiece.
None have come close to the eeriness and fear enticing work of Junji Ito. The art is detailed and focused on instilling fear in the readers. The other party will only get chills down their spine by describing the plot. Shiver is a collection of short horror stories, and each has a lasting impact.
Spoiling all won’t be fun; still, I will highlight a few creepy ones. An arm punctured with needles and tiny visible holes crawl towards a sick girl lying on the bed! A girl attempts suicide by hanging herself, and the thing you know is the flying balloons with human faces. They are next in line to die a cruel death.
There is another story of a confused family that hired puppeteers to help them live their everyday lives only to become living dolls. There are many other dark, creepy, gore, and hard-to-digest stories in Shiver. Anxiety attacks, loss of hunger, or gloomy mood are to be expected after reading this. It is the best horror manga I have ever read, and it reduced my life span to half. Nonetheless, this one isn’t for the fainthearted, so enjoy it with caution.
Conclusion
Phew, I am alive!!! LOL!
Just so you know, it took me all my courage to put this list together. I almost got amnesia trying to get the horrific and disturbing images outta my head. Plus, I don’t feel like eating anything now after all the gore and dark stuff.
So my dears and bears, with this, I conclude the list of 51+ horror manga. I tried to list the best, most popular, and aesthetic in art and the scariest overall manga of all times. This list contains whatever you can imagine, starting from action-oriented horror, psychological horror, serial killers, ghosts, hideous monsters, cannibals, vampires, and everything else.
It is just that this list will have it in a twisted and scarier way than your imagination. I bet it is a feast for horror manga lovers. I am pretty sure I missed a few, but I would love to know your favorite ones. Plus, I would love to know if you have ever experienced any paranormal activity around you.
Or perhaps you have nightmares that manifest in your reality. If yes, please let me know if you feel like it in the comment section.
Time for goodbye, mates! I’ll see you soon with another exciting topic. Until then, Adios!!!
