Without a doubt, the Tokyo Manji Gang has a wide variety of members ranging from personality to appearance. One member, in particular, stands out because of his unique quirk. Not only that but he also has a high position in Toman and has incredible strength. With that said, let’s take a deeper dive into the character called Smiley.

Nahoya Kawata “Smiley” has been seen wearing 2 outfits in the manga and only 1 in the anime since the anime adaptation is still in the early parts of the series.

In the anime, Smiley can be seen wearing the official Tokyo Manji Gang uniform. It consists of a black jacket and pants with engravings as well as a white belt and white boots.
In the manga, Smiley also wears the Tokyo Manji Gang uniform and the outfit he wore when he was the Twin Devils Gang Leader along with his twin, Angry. The Twin Devils Gang look he has is a white bomber jacket with black stripes, colorful Japanese art patterns, and a design on the back with a half-demon and half-man face which contrasts that of his twin and can be found on the cover page of Volume 15 of the manga.
Throughout the series, Smiley has fluffy peach-like orange hair, a small body structure, and of course, his iconic smile which earned him the nickname Smiley. He also wears 2 silver earrings on his left ear.

Personality
Smiley’s personality is very hard to determine because of the way he looks. No matter what, his smile never leaves even when he’s in a fight. One thing for sure is that Smiley will go to extreme lengths to protect his brother. Unlike his twin, Smiley loves getting into fights and punching the daylights out of someone. He is very loyal to the Tokyo Manji Gang and cares for every member he is close to. However, he is willing to do anything for his brother even if that means fighting against Toman if he deems necessary.

Brute Strength
Just like Mikey, Smiley also has a small but lean body structure. He is extremely powerful in terms of strength and a veteran when it comes to fighting. He was present in most if not all of Toman’s fights against other gangs and became a big part of each encounter.
Minor Authority
As the 4th Division Captain, Smiley has overall control of the 4th Division. He was also found to be a leader of the Twin Devils Gang which serves as proof that he has experience when it comes to handling delinquents.

Past/History
Not much is known about Nahoya Kawata’s history other than he was the past leader along with his brother of an inactive gang called the Twin Devils Gang. The Twin Devils Gang was formed by the Kawata twins and was based on Meguro. The Twin Devils Gang often had run-ins with Kanji Mochizuki’s gang called Jugem which operated in Kawasaki.
The Twin Devils Gang would be disbanded and both Smiley and Angry would serve under the Tokyo Manji Gang as the 4th Division Captain and Vice-captain respectively.

Twin Devils Gang
There is no background information about the Twin Devils Gang of Meguro other than they were created and ruled by the Kawata twins. In addition, there are no known members of the gang in the series.
Tokyo Manji Gang
Manjiro Sano
Manjiro Sano or also called Mikey is the founder and president of the Tokyo Manji Gang. He is respected by Smiley and gives him his loyalty. Mikey is an extremely proficient fighter and the one that holds Toman together.
Ken Ryuguji
Ken Ryuguji or also known as Draken is one of the founders and the vice-president of Toman. He is Mikey’s right-hand man as well as his moral compass.
Keisuke Baji
Keisuke Baji is a founder, the former 1st Division Captain of Toman, and was also a former member of Valhalla before his death. He is a wild and violent person who, just like Smiley, loves a good fight.
Takemichi Hanagaki
Takemichi Hanagaki is the main protagonist of the series. He can go back into the past and would have several top positions such as being the 1st Division Captain of Toman and the 11th Generation Leader of the Black Dragons.
Chifuyu Matsuno
Chifuyu Matsuno is the current 1st Division Vice-captain under Takemichi. He is smart and level-headed as well as a proficient fighter who took on one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Tenjiku.
Takashi Mitsuya
Takashi Mitsuya is the 2nd Division Captain of Toman and another one of its founders. He has similarities to Smiley’s twin, Angry where if possible they tend to avoid violence but are not afraid to get their hands dirty.
Hakkai Shiba
Hakkai Shiba is the 2nd Division Vice-captain under Takashi. He is a very gentle person who will always step up to protect his friends.
Haruki Hayashida
Haruki Hayashida has the nickname Pah-Chin. He was the former 3rd Division Captain of Toman and lost the position because of his arrest. Pah-Chin is also one of the founders and their official flag-bearer.
Ryohei Hayashi
Ryohei Hayashi or Pehyan is the 3rd Division Vice-captain. He doesn’t have much of a brain inside his head but is even stronger than Smiley when it comes to pure brute strength.

Souta Kawata
Souta Kawata or Angry is the twin brother of Smiley. Just like his brother he has a unique quirk regarding his face. Souta always looks angry but despite that, he has a calm nature. The way you can differentiate the twins except by looking at their faces is their hair where Angry’s hair is teal-like. Angry serves as the 4th Division Vice-Captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang.
Plot
Nahoya Kawata first appears in Chapter 22 of the Manga. He arrives with the rest of Toman just as Shuji Hanma ordered all of Moebius to kill Mikey and Draken. Smiley would participate in the brawl between the 2 gangs and would be standing when Toman was victorious.
Smiley also appears in several crucial arcs in the series such as the Moebius Arc, Valhalla Arc, Black Dragons Arc, and the Tenjiku Arc. He would also participate in most of the fights especially when it was a war between Toman and another gang.
Up until the current chapter in the Manga, Smiley would remain alive.
Final Verdict
Nahoya Kawata doesn’t have much influence in the progression of the plot and the series as a whole but that doesn’t mean Smiley lacks depth. He is a character that brings a unique flavor to the show especially to the variety of characters that make up the Tokyo Manji Gang.
