Made in Abyss is an anime series based on Akihito Tsukushi’s Japanese manga of the same name. This anime came out in 2017. Studio Kinema Citrus animated the series and the characters truly look really different as compared to other characters.
This is an adventure, dark fantasy, and sci-fi anime that takes us to another world. With its unique concept of the deep abyss and the ancient treasures inside it left by lost civilizations, it grabs our attention. As for its storyline, it revolves around a 12-years old adventurer, Riko who is trying to find her mother, Lyza. She has to take so many big steps in order to find her.. One day, she comes across a humanoid robot called Reg, who becomes her buddy.Their individual journeys begin just like that! We’re here to tell you about the characters in this exciting anime. MAIN CHARACTERS (RIKO’S PARTY)
Riko
Riko is the main character in Made in Abyss. She’s a 12-years old orphan from a town near the Abyss, Orth. She’s the only child Lyza, the White Whistle had. When Riko was just two years old, her mother started her last dive to the very bottom of the Abyss. Her father had died just before she was born. He didn’t get to see Riko even though he really wanted to.
Being a brave and unstoppable adventurer, Riko dreams big. She wants to become a White Whistle like her mother.A White Whistle is a legendary type of Delver who inspects the deeper parts of the Abyss. So, that’s something she wants to achieve. She also dreams of finding her mother. In fact, she starts her journey to find Lyza along with her buddy, Reg.
Reg
Reg is one of the main characters in Made in Abyss and is a member of Riko’s party. His real name, age, and origins are unknown. Before his encounter with Riko, he couldn’t recall anything. He was named after a dog that Riko used to own. Reg has an artificial body that is nearly unbreakable. Because of his body, the curse of the Abyss doesn’t affect Reg
Sometimes people call Reg “The Treasure of the Deep” as he can’t be cursed. Because of the similarities in their body designs, one of the characters in Made in Abyss began to wonder if Reg and he were created by the same person. Reg gets along with Riko despite being different from her. This anime shows us their teamwork and the dangerous circumstances they’ll have to face.
Nanachi
Nanachi is a legendary character who survived the curse of the sixth layer of the Abyss. She survived the curse but was left deformed. Nanachi is a useful character who knows the most about the ecosystem of the Abyss and what actually lies deep inside it. Nanachi belongs to Riko’s party, helping her reach the bottom of the Abyss. Nanachi’s gender is unknown.
Nanachi has been through darkness yet still remains cool and reserved. Their attitude is often sarcastic and sometimes cynical. But, for the most part, they prefer to relax. Nanachi’s powers are second to none! Nanachi can detect curses before they actually happen. Their observation skills are worth appreciating too!
Faputa
Faputa is known as the “Princess of the Narehate” by the people of Narehate village. She’s known to be of great value and is looked upon throughout the village. She can actually speak two languages: the language of IIblu and the language of Delvers. She’s portrayed as an unstable and wild girl. She speaks in a simple way by cutting her sentences short.
She often gets jealous of Reg and claims that he’s her property. She seems to observe him really deeply without getting shy. Faputa got sad when Reg said that he wanted to spend more time with Nanachi and Riko. Although the Narehate village loves her, she hates the way everyone judges her.
Prushka
Prushka was adopted by one of the White Whistle Delver, Bondrewd. She was born inside the Abyss and has never seen the actual world. Unlike many other characters in this anime, she’s friendly and amiable. Her adoptive father tends to care a lot about her. She is very loyal to him as well and would do anything to help him.
Since she spent most of her life inside the Abyss, she got curious about life outside the Abyss. Prushka is a very adventurous girl who loves exploring things and helping other people find their way inside the Abyss.
Meinya
Meinya is the pet given to Prushka by her father. It was her tenth birthday present. Prushka had a hard time pronouncing its name. However, this cute pet joined Riko, Reg, and Nanachi on their journey into the Abyss. Meinya cares deeply for Prushka and would do anything to protect her.
Doni
Doni is the character who turned into a stone for Lyza and became her whistle at one point. Doni is known to be a very reserved and collected individual who doesn’t want to bother anyone. Not much is known about Doni since they turned into stone.
BELCHERO ORPHANAGE
Belchero
Belchero is the director of the Orphanage who imposed strict rules on the academy and the orphanage. She’s a person of rules. If someone defies her rules, she becomes strict and frightening. She tries her best to run the Orphanage in the best possible ways. We see Belchero punishing Riko for not paying attention in class, which proves how strict she is. That’s why she has to put up with her strict behavior. A fact about Belchero is that she used to be a delver too until she hurt her knees and stopped going into the Abyss.
Jiruo
Jiruo is also one of the people who belong to the Belchero Orphanage. He’s a Moon Whistle Delver who teaches the Apprentice Delvers belonging to Belchero Orphanage. Jiruo is highly responsible for the upbringing of the children in the Orphanage. He’s a serious and stoic individual. He’s never been seen joking around. Jiruo takes his job more seriously than anything. He prioritizes children’s safety before anything and would do anything to protect them as well. Just like that, he does his best to support Riko’s decision to find her mother. Jirou is unquestionably one of the coolest characters in Made in Abyss.
Nat
Nat is also an orphan from Belchero Orphanage. He dreams big and wants to become a Moon Whistle Delver just like his teacher, Jiruo. Nat is the type of person you can rely on since he cares a lot about the people around him. He makes sure to help everyone around him.
Shiggy
Shiggy is also one of the orphans at Belchero Orphanage who wants to become a delver as well. At a very young age, he got the title of “Red Whistle Delver.” He’s a great observer and is helpful too! Thus, Shiggy is also one of the most dependable characters in the anime.
Kiyui
Kiyui is a small guy who lives with Riko and other kids at the Orphanage. He’s a gentle, kind-hearted, and smart individual. Since he’s very small, other kids look after Kiyui. He’s seen at the very start of the story and later reading a book about the Abyss.
ORTH TOWN
Hablog
Hablog is a famous Black Whistle Delver. He was the person who handed out Lyza’s notes and White Whistle as well. Hablog is also known as “Habo-san” by Riko and other children around him. As for his personality, he’s really bright and kind. Hablog tries his best to understand children and helps them too. He’s known to have a high level of curiosity about things. He’s one of the delvers who was sent after Riko and Reg disappeared from the orphanage. His high speed caught up to them and brought them back too.
Laffi
Laffi is one of the aunts at the Orphanage. She’s Hablog’s wife and the owner of a shop in the village of Orth. She’s equally loved by everyone around her for her lively personality. Riko often borrows Aunt Laffi’s telescope to observe the abyssal life. Her personality is really nice, she’s friendly, warm, and motherly. During your worst times, you can rely on her and she will listen to you very well. Laffi is one of the most caring characters in the anime who tries to go out of her way to help others. On top of all these positive traits, she’s pretty too!
Torka
Torka is Riko’s father and Lyza’s husband, who passed away before getting to see his daughter. He was looking forward to Riko’s birth, but unfortunately, he passed away. Torka was a good chef and proved to be a great husband. He was a member of a Survey Time belonging to the government holding the special mission to restore the Greater Artefact. However, he died due to an attack by a delver belonging to another country.
Bellmore
Bellmore is a storyteller at the plaza that leads to the Grand Pier. He’s able to entertain people around him by telling them countless stories. For instance, he told the stories of Lyza in a very joyous manner. He is also shown to be very direct whenever someone makes trouble, he loses his cool.
Mio
Mio is a pharmacist from overseas. She’s working on a medical fleet. She observed a really dangerous Birthday-Death disease and is trying her best to help everyone with her knowledge of science and medicine. Mio has a curious nature, she tends to experiment with everything. If she can’t make logical sense, she gets frustrated. However, she strongly believes in her medical knowledge and does her best to treat anyone who’s injured. Mio is very quick-witted and can diagnose a disease easily too.
SEEKER CAMP
Ozen
All hail the legendary Ozen. Ozen is known as “The Immovable” and is a respected White Whistle Delver who has achieved a lot of things inside the Abyss. Ozen has collected tons of artifacts inside the Abyss and they hold great value too. She’s a mysterious individual whose physical strength is no joke. As far as her personality is concerned, she’s cold and can be extremely cruel. She’s overpowered for a reason. Ozen might be cold towards everyone, but she has a warm spot in her heart for Lyza.
Marulk
Marulk is also one of the Delvers living in the Seeker Camp. Despite being so young, he has earned the title of “Blue Whistle Delver”. He’s now aiming to become a White Whistle Delver. Marulk is responsible for keeping his eyes around the camp. Before he actually traveled with his father, he was a part of the royalty named Jeseku. He was known to pass out after the age of ten. Marulk is a shy individual who misses talking with actual people since he’s been living inside the camp for a long time now.
Simred
Simred is one of the Black Whistle Delvers who’s a member of Ozen’s squad. Not much is known about his personality except for the fact that he’s been really kind and devoted to Ozen all this time.
Zapo
Zapo is a Moon Whistle Delver and also belongs to Ozen’s squad. Somewhere far in the camp, he’s observing survival training in the Abyss. He’s tasked with keeping an eye on Riko and Reg’s progress. Zapo wears goggles and has a white beard, which makes him look quite mature. As for his personality, he’s loyal to Ozen. Even though he appeared very briefly in the anime, his devotion to Ozen is super clear.
Yelme
Yelme is a Moon Whistle Delver who’s also Ozen’s squad member in the Subterranean Bandits. Marulk approaches Yelme and others when there’s a fight going on between Reg and Ozen. Riko’s party tries its best to stop the fight by asking Yelme to do something. After Reg gains consciousness, Yelme clears out how Ozen was just testing Reg by attacking him. Not much is known about Yelme due to his short appearance in the anime but let’s hope to see more of him as the story progresses.
IDO FRONT
Bondrewd
Bondrewd is known as “The Lord of Dawn.” He’s a legendary White Whistle Delver who discovered many great things in the Abyss. Bondrewd is a researcher, and he has been involved in many illegal activities too. Bondrewd is the type of man who values knowledge more than anything else in the world. He is ready to sacrifice anyone when it comes to gaining more knowledge. Bondrewd is such a thorough person who knows the name of each and every person that he sacrificed. Isn’t that crazy?
Gueira
Gueira is one of the members of Umbra Hands, also known as the Praying Hands. He’s stationed at the Ido Front. He’s one of Bondrewd’s men who are highly devoted to him. In his early life, he tried to save Prushka after she was cursed and suffered a lot of physical and mental trauma. He thought killing her would solve the problem and everything will be alright. However, that was of no use, since Bondrewd came across her and saved her.
Gyarike
Gyarike is also called Ashen Gyarike because of the flamethrower artifact. He’s a stoic person who doesn’t like being nosy and disturbing others. He’s quite a loyal nakama to Bondrewd and has never caused any problems for him.
Ilblu
Wazukyan
Now, we have the narehate who are hollow beings. These beings were cursed by the Abyss’ sixth layer and their bodies were deformed. Wazukyan is one of the narehate who created IIblu. He can speak narehate language as well as the language of the delvers! Unlike his scary appearance, he’s a laidback and easy-going person. He has good relations with the people around him. Beleaf
Beleaf is also a narehate who will go to any length to get what they want. However, he’s quite considerate of people around him. For instance, he gave Riko the choice to trade anything for getting Nanachi back. When Beleaf was a human, he was a lot nicer than he is right now.
Moogie
Moogie is a down-to-earth worker at a restaurant that Riko visited. He’s very patient and calm. When it comes to making Riko understand the narehate language, Moogie deals really well and makes sure that she understands everything!
Majikaja
Majikaja is also one of the narehate who’s shown to be friendly and caring. Majikaja’s gender is not yet known. Majikaja values scents since their bodies are made of scents. They’re also calling Nanachi “good-smelling Nanachi.” Overall, Majikaja is a useful character in Made in Abyss.
6TH LAYER
Irumyuui
Irumyuui is the daughter of the chief tribe who’s living inside a rim in the Abyss. She’s very shy and likes to stay away from strangers due to her upbringing in the tribe. However, when she becomes close to others, she starts to open up.
Ajapoka
Ajapoka is one of the members of the Ganja who traveled to the Abyss. He plays a vital role in Ganja’s development of the 6th layer of the Abyss. Ajapoka is a really responsible and straightforward person. He’s known for his physical strength.
Gaburoon
Gaburoon is a large robot that provides services to Faputa. They are also connected to the 6th layer. Gaburoon is very analytical, speaking in an objective way whenever they speak. They are also very loyal to Faputa and listen to her very well.
Tepaste
Tepaste is a young girl who’s somehow connected to the Black Whistle Delver, Cravali. She’s also involved in an illegal dive with him. Tepaste is cheerful all the time, and she’s always bright and talks playfully.
Cravali
Cravali is a genius delver who’s very level-headed. He keeps his cool even in the most threatening situations. He can observe other people really well. He can let you know whether or not you can trust someone. Cravali prepares for the worst and doesn’t like to rely on luck alone.
Srajo
In Made in Abyss, Srajo is a very mysterious character. Nothing is known about her personality. The only thing that we’re aware of is the fact that she lived rather comfortably on the 5th layer of the Abyss.
Nishigora
Nishigora belongs to the Hail Hex group that came for Cravali and Tapaste to kill them. She expresses herself just fine and in a very threatening way. She loves torturing people. But that’s only her one side. The other side of Nishigora is rather soft and calm. She’s not really bright, but not really threatening either.
ABYSS
Lyza
Lyza is Riko’s mother who’s also called “The Annihilator.” She’s quite strong and has made outstanding discoveries inside the Abyss. She left Riko when she was just two years old and went to the depths of the Abyss. Thus, she found some useful artifacts and made her name throughout the Abyss. All the people respect Lyza and tell kids about her story. Lyza is a really strong and independent woman who has been through a lot. The crazy monsters inside the Abyss made her very strong and fearless. She wants Riko to experience the things that she did and become a White Whistle Delver.
Wakuna
Wakuna is also called “The Chosen.” He’s a legendary White Whistle Delver who also made so many cool discoveries inside the Abyss. He made his very last dive to the 6th layer, a.k.a. the cursed layer of the Abyss.
