21+ Anime Like Mushoku Tensei [RANKED] (updated!!)

Anime Like Mushoku Tensei

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is widely referred to as the grandfather of all the Isekai anime subgenre. Basically, this anime was what began the isekai tropes. This is where all the usual “cliche” parts originate from.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at anime that share some similarities with Mushoku Tensei, either due to being the same sub genre, or having elements in common.

Well then, let’s dive into this list of recommendations, shall we?

Starting with…

There is sadly very little in common between the two animes, but it is true that Vinland Saga is worth checking out if you’re looking for an action packed, high rev anime series. One with a main character striving to live up to great expectations, and high dedication for his people, not to mention his father’s legacy.

Only these two things are majorly similar between the two anime. The expectations the two main characters have to live up to, and their tenacity being shown while fighting to do so.

Kazuma, your average but not too sharp young hero, mistakes a tractor for a speeding truck and tries to save a girl from it. However, he ends up dying from a heart attack caused by his own panic and the shock of realization. Lucky for him, he’s offered to be reborn and turn over a new leaf.

Similarities between the two anime are that Kazuma and Rudeus are both hopeless NEETs in their former life, without much of a goal in life. Their death is also set up similarly, although one of them has a completely different outcome.

Kazuma is then offered to be reincarnated into an MMORPG-like world by the goddess Aqua, who also becomes one of his companions.

Back to similarities though, both anime have a strong sense of humour and perversion is a strong aspect as well. Quite frankly, there’s plenty to be drooling over in both cases. While not the highest quality of anime in the sense of there being many much better written ones out there even among the isekai sub genre, Konosuba is worth checking out.

The Demon King of Tyranny is revived after 2000 years of relative peace. Now, Anos has to fit into a completely new kind of world, where he’s considered a misfit by everyone. Despite actually being overpowered beyond belief, his powers are underestimated by the Demon King Academy and is labeled a misfit.

The resemblances once more start with both being fantasy anime. They both live with magic powers, need to strive to prove their worthiness in the face of high expectations, and naturally there are a high number of beautiful girls surrounding the main characters at all times.

I especially like the fact that they prove themselves against all odds, although it’s also true that Rudeus has much bigger shoes to fill.

After a tragic accident, former librarian, Urano, is reborn as a small girl with an infatuation for books. The series could be best described as a bookworm’s guide to Isekai. Urano’s reborn as a small, frail girl, into a medieval fashioned world.

Although not necessarily a fantasy anime per se, Ascendance of a Bookworm shares with Mushoku Tensei in the fact that it’s an Isekai, both main characters are reincarnated as small children, and they both have a lot to do with books.

The differences though are that Urano was a useful member of society as a librarian, doesn’t have much magic powers, and lives only for books. Also, she’s trying her hardest to get as many books as she can get her hands on. Still, a charming story, and a great Isekai in general.

After the latest update to a VRMMO game, 30000 players got stuck inside the game titled “Elder Tale”. This immediately brings about the first similarity, since in a way, Log Horizon is just as much an isekai, as Mushoku Tensei, but maybe with a much more unique twist.

Similarities continue with both Rudeus and Shiroe being socially awkward, but also sore losers. Both of them are considered weak at the beginning, but they later prove their worth by using what they’re best at to their advantage. Due to ending up in an isekai situation, their lives also greatly change for the good.

There are a lot of important similarities between the two main characters. They both lived a below average, hopeless life with difficulties and died in a similar way. Both were reincarnated as children, but kept their old memories, and both must face great changes to their lifestyle.

Ryouma and Rudeus are very much alike in many ways, their fate also plays out similarly, and they both have to face new kinds of challenges that are far greater than what they’ve ever faced before. We get to see in full detail how they react to these challenges.

Aside from sharing in the isekai genre, this beautifully animated Film Noir in anime form is one of the best you could probably ask for. Set in modern day urban conditions, written by the same author as Full Metal Panic and Amagi Brilliant Park, this is one you don’t want to miss out on.

The pairing of a knight with a childlike appearance and a rugged war veteran now police officer, the meeting of two brilliant minds working together. The two of them solving crimes related to isekai in a city on the verge of chaos makes for a perfect combination.

Yet another magical isekai? Yes!

How many beautiful girls would you like to surround your main character? Yes!

How awesome should your main character be with magic thanks to the teachings of an even more awesome master? Yes!

I’m sorry about that, but the truth stands that both Rudeus and Shin share a lot in common and being isekai’d is just one of those. They both train in the arts of magic and they gradually develop into better characters. Their masters were both the best at their profession and they both had a lot of important events in life connected to women.

Overall, if you watch Wiseman’s Grandchild, you will receive a very similar experience to Mushoku Tensei, so it’s worth checking out.

It’s safe to say Re:Zero is achingly similar to Mushoku Tensei in quite a few ways. Both Rudeus and Subaru have been isekai’d to another world in one way or another. Both of them were hopeless misfits of society and both have a lot of beautiful women surrounding them.

At the same time, both have retained their old memories (Subaru his old body even). Even though Subaru doesn’t become an overpowered alpha main character, he does overtime become a good leader by the end of it all, and worthy of fulfilling his wish of getting together with his dream girl.

Although, there are more differences between the two than similarities, Re:Zero is definitely worth giving a watch.

Catarina and Rudeus actually share quite a bit in common. One for being reborn in a fantasy world with magic, being of noble origin, both striving against great expectations set against them, and both having a difficult and challenging life.

The differences though are also that they are talkative. Caterina is supposed to be the villain of the game she was reincarnated into, and has to work to not let the story lead to her untimely death, she was a high school student before she died and had a friend very close to her.

Too bad the second season was… let’s say a bit of a disappointment though. Still, well worth a watch.

Although not an isekai anime, To your Eternity is quite an intriguing story with the main character, Fushi, not even a human, yet struggling to become one, and help those who are in need of it. It’s a magical journey of a non sentient being slowly developing emotions, learning the importance of life, and making friends who will never leave him.

Fushi and Rudeus don’t have much in common, but what is true is that their story is enchanting, powerfully emotional, magical and full of mysteries. Although both may come off as not the most sympathetic characters at first, in the end they’ll both grow on you.

Putting aside being one of the best isekai anime from before isekai even became a thing, this anime also shares in quite a lot of similarities with Mushoku Tensei. Especially with both main characters being a bit outside of the norm in terms of normal society, and being surrounded by beautiful women.

Itami on the other hand, is a respected member of society as he’s a soldier, and thus is able to achieve some impressive feats during the story. Still, his subordinates do not show him the respect he deserves.

Not only does magic exist here, but there are also giant robots known as Silhouette Knights. Does it get much better than this?

Similarities then continue with both of them being reborn into well known noble families, both have insane magic powers, both keep their memories of their previous life, thus being able to change the new world they find themselves in to their own liking.

If you like mecha anime, or just want magic driven war machines beating the ever living crap out of each other, this is the show for you.

What does an isekai anime, the Grand-daddy of all isekai have in common with a historical anime marvel, that takes place in renaissance Florence? Quite a lot actually.

Young Arte, a noble child, and a girl on top of that, leaves her house and the prospect of a boring average life to live for her hobby and dreams, and become a painter. She enters a world that was not made for women, and in the end, against all odds, proves her worth.

It’s not hard to draw the parallels between the two, right? Definitely give it a watch! after all, Arte was Anime #3 of the year of 2020, just barely missing out on the Anime of the Year title.

This anime is among the few that come really close to being the perfect match for Mushoku Tensei. Rimuru and Rudeus were both reincarnated into another world after their deaths, both discovering that they have incredible powers. Both are much-much more powerful than they look at first sight, and had similar pasts.

They are both also driven by the urge to prove their worth to the entire world, and both have great agendas to fight for respectively. Don’t miss your chance to see Rimuru’s exploits by watching the anime!

Though Elaina and Rudeus don’t share much in common, the anime world, the magic being used, the magical adventure, the dark and haunting imagery and cruel reality that strikes from time to time, are some of the aspects you will definitely appreciate.

Well’s adventures are easily the closest you can get to resembling Rudeus’s story. Wendelin von Benno Baumeister used to be a salaryman once, and after snoozing off once, he woke up in the body of a child in another world, thus giving us our first two similarities.

Although not as detailed, Well still goes through a similar character development. He becomes a master of the arts of different forms of magic, is surrounded by wonderful friends, most of whom are actually beautiful girls, and has weaknesses and strengths also similar, putting aside Rudeus’ naughty side. In general, they’re very similar characters.

So, if you want an anime to fill the emptiness that Mushoku Tensei leaves in you after watching it, give The 8th Son a try!

Others may not agree, but in my opinion, Grimgar stands closest to Mushoku Tensei. It’s isekai setting, the ruthless and bone chilling realism, the cruel truth you must often face when it’s already too late: We’re just mortal humans, and we do die if we’re killed hard enough.

I know that sounds dumb from me, but the very human characters, the powerful imagery, the dark reality the characters are faced with, the strife for becoming something greater and all the challenges they’re faced with that are most of the time not fair, make this anime the ultimate candidate to be your next after Mushoku Tensei, if you haven’t seen it yet.
