Sometimes an anime comes to an end and fans cry for more. This can lead to three things, sequels, prequels or anime spin offs. Anime spinoffs tend to be very hit or miss, they’re either great or they are so bad that fans pretend that they don’t exist.
It can be really hard to make a show based in the same world or that has the same concept as another. You have to not only make a good show in itself but also make a show that looks good when compared to the original. With that being said let’s go look at some anime spin offs that out perform their originals.
10. Isekai Quartet
Starting off this anime spin off list with a more recent show. Putting Isekai Quartet on this list is kind of cheating, as it’s not just a spin off of one show but of four. This show combines the main characters from Overlord, Re:Zero, Konosuba and The Saga of Tanya the Evil and shows their chibi adventures.
It’s a pretty unique idea to bring together four completely separate hit shows together for an entire series, even if it’s only for one season. The fact that the show pulls off this idea well is enough to earn its spot on this list. However, to keep it fair we can’t put it too high on the list, as it’s a spin-off of four separate series. That makes it a lot harder for Isekai Quartet to be better than it’s original, since it has four of them.
9. Dragon Ball Z: The History Of Future Trunks
This might be a bit of a perplexing entry on the list as some fans might not consider this an anime spin off. Since Dragon Ball Z: The History of Future Trunks is a movie some fans would argue that it isn’t a spin-off but since it focuses on a completely different timeline in the Dragon Ball universe, I’m going to count it.
This movie focuses on the earlier life of Future Trunks before he goes back in time to save Goku. We get to see how hard it was for Trunks growing up in a world ravaged by the Androids. I think that we can all admit that despite our love for the series, its writing ain’t the best. This isn’t the case with this movie though, as you get to see the pain and hardship that Trunks had to live through. It’s also a very emotional film, which is something that really can’t be said for the majority of Dragon Ball Z
8. Pokemon: Origins
Moving on to a miniseries that is 100 percent an anime spin off. Pokemon: Origins doesn’t follow Ash but the adventures of Red, the main character from the very first Pokemon games. Pokemon: Origins is basically a retelling of the events of Pokemon Red and Blue and despite those games not having much of a story, this series has a great one.
This well-done story is a breath of fresh air to fans of Pokemon who find the main series’ story a bit lacking. The whole monster/problem of the week format, while enjoyable when I was a kid, is pretty boring and frustrating after the age of 10. The more focused story this spin-off has is a great entry to the franchise. Also this anime spin off is worth checking out for the animation alone, so even if your only a little interested, give it a try.
7. Digimon Frontier
Digimon Frontier is one of those shows that you probably saw as a kid and then forgot about for a long time, at least it was for me. This Digimon spin off is based entirely in the digital world making it kind of one of the earlier isekai animes. Instead of having Digimon, the humans kind of are the Digimon.
The human characters of the show transform into Digimon for the show’s fights. This puts an interesting spin on the series and leads to some interesting situations with the way that they transform. In a similar fashion to Pokemon and Pokemon: Origins this tighter and more focused story makes this anime spin-off a lot easier to digest than its predecessor.
6. Attack On Titan Junior High
Alright, I know what you might be thinking, how is this spin-off better than the original Attack on Titan. Now I’m going to say something slightly controversial but those first few seasons of Attack on Titan, kinda mid-tier entry-level anime. I said it and you know that I’m right so moving on.
This chibi, spin off version of Attack on Titan at least has the advantage over its predecessor in the humor department. While AOT is justifiably grim for the most part with some humor sprinkled in, the opposite is the case for Attack on Titan Junior High. Attack on Titan Junior High is all about the humor with Eren hating Titans for eating his burger instead of all the parental murder like in the OG series.
5. Fate Carnival Phantasm
Fate is a series that is pretty much entirely made up of anime spin offs and will continue like that until the end of time if Type-Moon has anything to say about it. With most of the series being made up of spin-offs, it can be hard to decide which one makes it onto this list but ultimately one that is super loved by the fans wins out.
Fate Carnival Phantasm is an anime spin off from the original Fate/Stay Night anime that came out in 2006. The twist here is instead of fighting for the holy grail, it’s basically a game show where all the characters play carnival events to determine the winner. It’s funny to see the characters from Fate/Stay Night, all with their original personalities, dealing with this situation, seriously it’s great check it out.
4. RWBY Chibi
RWBY is a 3D anime created by Rooster Teeth and they should be applauded for making a show that’s lasted seven seasons as a mainly digital and online-based company. The thing is while it’s an accomplishment for a company like rooster teeth to make a long-running show, it doesn’t mean that it’s good.
The series started off strong but the story and characterization just got way too cluttered and or underdeveloped. while the main series is a bit of a letdown, its spin off, RWBY Chibi is somehow not. Despite definitely being made with the intention of being the cute and quirky anime spin off to the main series, RWBY Chibi is just all-around a better series than it’s predecessor. Having a tighter story, cleaner animation and just overall better episodes, it’s hard to argue this spin off isn’t better than the original.
3. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
The Gundam franchise, similarly to the Fate franchise, is one that’s built on the back of its spin offs. While the Universal Century Timeline is the most beloved, most likely due to all the continuity, a lot of the more critically acclaimed shows are outside of the “main” timeline.
Once again it was hard to pick out which spin-off deserved to be on this list, but I had to come to a personal favorite of mine and many others in the fandom. In terms of the plot and characters, Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is a high point for the series, along with having one of the more unique main Gundam designs. Have that on top of some great action scenes and you have a top-tier spin-off anime that easily outshines its earlier predecessors.
2. Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds
Somehow Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds takes the concept of card games on motorcycles and manages to take it seriously but it actually kind of makes it cool. The original Yu-Gi-Oh is a classic and iconic anime but it has some weird missteps along the way, especially during its start when it is trying to figure itself out.
With all the work put into figuring out the concept and tone of the show done by the original show and its first spin off, Yu-Gi-Oh GX, 5Ds had a lot going for it. A fairly compelling and easily understandable story and actually tense duels make this spin-off shine brighter than it’s predecessor.
1. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online does the impossible, it makes SAO good. It would be a fantastic feat to just make SAO bearable but to make something set in the same universe as the main series actually good, is insane. All the memes, (no matter how accurate they are) aside, Gun Gale Online completely blows its predecessor out of the water.
This anime spin off does everything right where SAO when wrong. Its characterization is well done and its main protagonist isn’t given titanium plot armor. The story is small and simple but easy to follow and consistent. This spin off anime is so good that it even outshines the swamp of memes that has engulfed the SAO franchise. If that doesn’t make it deserve the top spot on the spin-off anime list then I don’t know what will.
