One Piece Film: Red (RELEASE DATE 2022)

While most of the previous 14 One Piece movies have been a bit of a disappointment, this one is guaranteed to be a DIFFERENT story, so bring your hopes up. All the fans are hyped up and for a good reason, one of our favorite characters will finally have the screen time that he deserves.

He is Kakkoii—handsome, overpowered, sarcastic, charismatic, and mysterious. He is also the reason behind all Luffy’s ambitions. Yup, you guessed it, we are talking about one of the Four Emperors of the sea, captain of the “Red Hair Pirates”, Red Hair Shanks.

The title of the movie bears Shanks’ famous scar declaring that he will be the MC of the film.

Yet, that’s not the only reason to be excited, Eiichiro Oda, the author of this masterpiece, in the flesh, is going to supervise the movie by taking up the role of general producer.

A teaser trailer has already been released giving us some hints about the possible plot and cast of the film, however, any relevant information has been kept secret. Red is shrouded in a veil of mystery.

Nobody likes spoilers and a film as grand as this one should be savored the right way. Discover and get surprised as the movie goes on without any kind of expectation.

one piece movies

This movie is going to be nothing like the ones before and nothing like the series. It’s going to be something completely new, detached from the past.

It was a challenging project, a project that all the people who devoted their heart and sweat for are extremely proud of. They took a risk and that risk paid off.

A change of pace, a breath of fresh air, unexpected events, a creative story, an awesome cast, something that will blow our minds, something to look forward to. RED is going to break the internet that’s for sure.

However, it doesn’t hurt to speculate a bit. That’s where the true fun lies. So let’s see what we can come up with, with the info we have at hand.

RELEASE DATE

One Piece 1000 Commemorative Battle of Onigashima Visual 1000x600 1

First of all, the most important piece of information is the release date. The movie is expected to come out on the 6th of August 2022. Let’s just hope it won’t get delayed because of the pandemic.

This release date is only for Japan, for the rest of the world the date is yet to be announced.

It was announced the day the 1000th episode was released. A nice bonus gift for their anniversary along with the comeback of the first One Piece opening.

PREDICTED CAST

Red Hair Pirates

Now for the cast, as we said before, the start of the show is most probably going to be our beloved Shanks. And because he doesn’t appear much, let me remind you a bit of his greatness.

Before becoming captain, Shanks was a member of Gol D. Roger’s, the Pirate King’s crew. After his death, Shanks formed the Red Hair Pirates.

When he wasn’t notorious, he met Luffy in a small village. He and his crew grew fond of him due to his personality and unwavering determination.

When he got his hands on the Gomu Gomu no Mi, our gluttonous MC just couldn’t resist the temptation and ate it, thus acquiring its power.

After saving Luffy from a certain death and losing one of his arms, he gave the little boy his precious straw hat along with the promise to meet again on the vast sea as equals.

As laid-back as the man can be, just make sure to never hurt his friends. You don’t ever want to see Shanks angry.

One of my favorite quotes from One Piece would be what Shanks told Higuma when he was picking on Luffy when he was still just a brat—unable to stand up for himself  “Listen up… You can pour drinks on me, you can throw food at me… You can even spit on me. I’ll just laugh that stuff off. But… Good reason or not… Nobody hurts a friend of mine”.

Shanks’s crew might be even livelier than the Straw Hat Pirates. Every time they appear they are seen drinking, partying, and enjoying themselves to the max. Makes you want to be one of them for sure. The plot of this movie is very appropriate for the vibe that they provide.

red hair crew

Even if he treats his crewmates as equals, all of them know his worth. They hold deep respect towards him. They never address him informally, they call him “Boss” at all times. They would ensure their lives to him and even give them away from him.

He might sound a little childish from time to time, however, Shanks’ intellect can’t be denied. The man hides it well but he is quite shrewd. He is also a great diplomat with a gift to always find the right words in the right situation.

In a nutshell, Shanks is just AWESOME. As I mentioned before, he is rarely seen on the show, however, every time he makes an appearance, the fans go crazy.

I believe that he is one of the only characters that is hated by absolutely no one.

The other character of the cast is the girl that is seen on the release poster of the Red movie. Also just speculation but it is said that she might be a sky island resident with some sort of connection with Shanks’ past.

Oda stated in one of his interviews that he wanted to shake this up a bit in terms of the villain. In the last five films, the antagonists were male characters. So obviously, for this one, it will be a girl and I believe she is it.

Her design is also going to be extraordinary. The first person to ever put Luffy into a drawing is going to have the magnificent task of bringing her to life. So, let’s all cheer for Goro Taniguchi and express our gratitude for his hard work and dedication.

Also, obligatorily, the Straw Hats Pirates will make their appearance. The show is still all about them in the end. Not that we are sad about it, on the contrary, we can’t get enough of them.

We have been following them since 1997 and we will continue to do so until the never-ending manga finally concludes.

This is a summary of the cast and their voice actors:

Shūichi Ikeda as Shanks

SHANKS va

While Kazuya Nakai can be considered the rookie of the lot, Shūichi Ikeda is definitely the senior. A voice actor since 1970, he has everyone else beat in terms of experience.

The first series that he participated in is Akaki Chi no Eleven as Shunji Hayase. He is still working till now and isn’t showing any sign of wanting to retire anytime soon.

Well if he wants to do so one day, he’d better finish voicing Shanks in the movie or he’ll have to deal with me at least.

Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy

luffy va

Yep, the voice of our MC is actually that of a girl. She debuted in 1978 by becoming the voice of Ryoko Takagi in Gekiso! Ruben Kaiser.

She became the Voice of Monkey D. Luffy in 1999 when the anime started airing till now and hopefully for the years to come.

She won in 1986 the 9th Anime Grand Prix of the Voice actress of the Year, in 2011 she won the 5th Seiyu Awards for the Kazue Takahashi Memorial Award, and finally, in 2013 she won the 7th Seiyu Awards of the Kids Family Award

Kazuya Nakai as Zoro

zoro va

Kayuya is Roronoa Zoro’s voice. He debuted in 1996 by bringing to life After Witz Sou from the series War Gundam X.

His voice acting career is as large as Mayumi’s however, he hasn’t won any award yet. His talent is nonetheless undeniable.

Akemi Okamura as Nami

nami va

Akemi’s career started in 1992 when she played Priscilla in Calimero. She has a lot of experience and a lot of ability. A successful voice actress befitting an over-successful anime.

Kappei Yamaguchi as Usopp

usopp va

Kappei endorsed a lot of noticeable roles. Among other things he played, Shinichi Kudo in the series Case Closed, Inuyasha in Inuyasha, Ranma Saotome (male voice) in Ranma ½, L in Death Note, and finally Usopp in One piece.

Ranma was the character that made his debut in 1989, an MC from the get-go. Impressive!

Hiroaki Hirata as Sanji

sanji va

He is the father of Hirata Production and the voice of Sanji Vinsmoke. He debuted in 1997 by taking on the role of unimportant characters in some episodes of Detective Conan or Case Closed if you prefer.

Compared to the other voice actors of One Piece, he is the one that has the most experience in Live Action plays.

Ikue Ōtani as Chopper

chopper va

Chopper’s voice is also that of a woman. Ikue debuted in 1986. She was Kiyoshi Hara in Ganbare, Kickers!

She is able to become the voice of both male and female characters. She is known to have played multiple times, multiple characters during one production.

Yuriko Yamaguchi as Robin

robin va

Her career took off in 1992 when she impersonated Education critic, Kyoko Fukaya in the series Crayon Shin-chan.

Her voice actress career is not as packed as the other, but she only endorsed important and noticeable roles. One of them is, of course, Nico Robin from One Piece.

Kazuki Yao as Franky

franky va

In 1985, Kazuki made his first appearance on the voice acting scene by becoming the voice of Dancouga the series Super Beast Machine God.

On par with Mayumi Tanaka, Kazuki also had the honor to win an award during his career. He won the 9th Anime Grand Prix for the Voice actor of the Year in 1986.

He is now the voice actor of Franky in One Piece.

Chō as Brook

brook va

Like the character that he represents, Brook, Chō has a thing for art. Not only is he a voice actor, but he is also an approved teacher of calligraphy. It’s one of his hobbies along with jogging and badminton.

His real name is Shigeru Nagashima and his former stage name was Yūichi Nagashima. He changed it to Chō in 2006.

He debuted in 1989. He was the Pilot, Bronze Statue in Time Travel Tondekeman. In 2018, he also won the 12th Seiyu Awards for the Kei Tomiyama Memorial Award.

Katsuhisa Hōki as Jinbe

jinbe va

Katsuhisa took on the important task of finishing what Daisuke started. His real name is Katsuaki Hōki.

Not only did he become Jinbe, but he was also the voice of Gekko Moriah in One Piece. His ability to change the tone of his voice to that extent is just mind-blowing.

His first role as an anime voice actor was in 1988. He was Doctor Hiyari (substitute), Amefuri Oni, and Priest Ishiuse in Soreike! Anpanman.

PREDICTED PLOT

Musician Infobox

Now for the plot, it’s going to be an original story. Well, really there is nothing much to say. The trailer teaser revealed only one thing, the movie will surely be related to music.

It will be taking place during some sort of music festival on an unknown Island. I don’t know about you but I would just love to see Zoro singing, or trying to at least.

Bits and pieces of Shanks’ past will also be highlighted. They just might steal the spotlight of the movie as it is something we are all curious about.

The storyboard is also divided into three sections pointing out to the fact that the film might have three acts.

MOVIE CREW

General Producer: Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro oda 2

Oda is the father of the best-selling manga ever with more than 490 million copies sold, One Piece.

That one masterpiece turned him into the best-selling fiction author in history. He literally transformed the history of manga.

A kid who wanted to avoid the hassle of working in a real job decided to become a manga artist as an escape.

Inspired by the legendary series Dragon Ball and Vicky the Viking plus mixing his love for pirates into one project, One Piece was born.

Director: Goro Taniguchi

goro 2

Goro is an anime director, a storyboard artist, a producer, and a writer. He is famous for directing one of the best original anime, Code Geass.

Extremely talented and passionate, Oda came to him personally to ask him to participate in the One Piece Red Movie, an offer that he was delighted to take as he viewed it as another exciting challenge that his career brought forth.

Screenplay: Tsutomu Kuroiwa

kuroiwaaa 2

There is not much information concerning Tsutomu. The only thing we know for sure is that he was in charge of the screenplay in One Piece Film: Gold and is also in charge of the screenplay in One Piece Film: Red.

He has a lot of other movies he worked on, but nothing worth mentioning.

That’s it for the movie crew. I believe that the movie is in really good hands. Together, they are a mix of cheer talent, creativity, and ingenuity.

Let’s see what those minds can accomplish when they combine their forces.
