What is Magi Anime About?
The anime’s name is “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” (マギ). It’s adapted from the similar manga series written and illustrated by Ohtaka Shinobu (also the author of the ongoing series Orient), that was serialized starting from June 2009 to October 2017 by Shogakukan in the Weekly Shōnen Sunday, a famous shōnen manga magazine that hosts popular series such as Detective Conan and its spin-offs. The 369 chapters of the Magi manga were collected and published in 37 volumes and licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media. In 2014, the series won the 59th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category.
The manga was so popular in Japan (its volumes were very often in the list of the top 20 of the weekly best-selling manga) that the studio A-1 Pictures (Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, The Seven Deadly Sins) made two anime television adaptations called “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic”, that was broadcast from October 2012 to March 2013, and the sequel “Magi: The Kingdom of Magic”, that was broadcast from October 2013 to March 2014. In North America, the series is licensed by Aniplex of America, in the United Kingdom by Kazé, and in Australia by Madman Entertainment.
From May to June 2013 Weekly Shōnen Sunday and, later, from September 2013 to April 2018 Shogakukan’s website Ura Sunday serialized a spin-off and prequel of Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic series, called “Magi: Adventure of Sinbad” (マギ シンドバッドの冒険), that was written by Ohtaka Shibonu and illustrated by Ohtera Yoshifumi. The 182 chapters of the manga were collected in 19 volumes.
At first, the manga was adapted into a 5-episodes OVA by Lay-duce (Classroom crisis, Fate/Grand Order: First Order), who released the episodes from May 2014 to July 2015 bundled with some volumes of the manga. Later, the same staff from the OVA produced a 13-episodes anime adaptation that that was broadcast from April to July 2016.
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a personal reinterpretation of the ancient collection of the Middle Eastern tales, Arabian Nights. The main character is Aladdin, an adorable and kind little child, who travels the world adventuring into the mysterious dungeons.

These incredible buildings are full of treasures and traps that appear randomly around the kingdoms. His companion is Ugo, a huge Djinn that Aladdin can summon by playing his magical flute: the creature offers its power to the little child while both of them look for the Djinn’s head that is scattered in one of the dungeons across the world.
Aladdin’s journey, however, is only just beginning. An adventure full of encounters and clashes, spells and curses, friendships and losses, discoveries and wanderings, awaits him. A world full of wonders and secrets is just waiting to be explored.
Of course, Aladdin will meet people who will become his allies and best friends, such as Alibaba Saluja, a young adventurer with a mysterious past but with a great destiny ahead of him, or the brave Morgiana, a girl who will be saved from a cruel fate but will later become a loyal warrior. Others, however, will become his enemies, such as the powerful Judal, the dark magi who will give some troubles to Aladdin and his friends.

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a story about a wonderful adventure that shows a beautiful and exotic scenario that reminds us of the Disney classic, Aladdin. The characters and the aesthetics are similar to the ones we find in the Arabian Nights, from Aladdin’s magic lamp to Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, passing through Sinbad the sailor with their desert landscapes and towns’ bazaars. But that’s where the similarities end.
Ohtaka’s story is so much more. Magi can address heavy topics, such as slavery, poverty, war, death, politics, sacrifice, marriages of interest, betrayal, revenge, racism, but at the same time, it expresses important themes, like friendship, love, trust, growth, truth.
It depicts the battle between good and evil, between light and darkness, between what is right and what is wrong. The story has a perfect balance of funny and tragic moments, happy and sad ones so that the watcher can enjoy a good and complete show.
The characters are beautifully written. Even the villains are well depicted and charismatic! The author provides the story with characters of all kinds and personalities, from strong warriors to beautiful princesses, from powerful kings to almighty magicians, from simple merchants to academy students.
The OST is fitting and incisive and the openings are so powerful and amazing that you’ll want to include them in your Spotify playlists as soon as you hear them. Also, the design is quite simple and clear, but likable. The colors are bright and lively and make the view comfortable.
In short, if you are looking for something GOOD to watch, with an intricate plot, well-characterized characters, enjoyable music, and a beautiful graphic, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a perfect choice. What are you waiting for? Start watching it right now!
