Where Shonen anime gave us some of the best action scenes in anime history, Shoujo anime gave us some of the best heartwarming and tear-dropping scenes ever. Shoujo anime focuses more on romance, comedy, and the drama that a typical shonen tries to avoid.
Table of Contents
Shoujo anime focuses more on the female audience, rather than the male audience. That being said, there are some great Shoujo anime that everyone would enjoy. Here are 25+ best Shoujo anime you should watch.

Now, she learns about how life is without her luxury and wants to take revenge for her father’s murder. Though it’s a generic story we come across from time to time, it’s still somewhat good I’d say.
23. Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita)

How about a story where you flirt with God? Nanami, a high schooler, is an unlucky girl who has a big debt left for her by her father. Now, she is homeless and doesn’t have a job. One day, she helps a man, and turns out that man was a shrine Fox God.

22. Cardcaptor Sakura

What’s a shoujo anime list without magical girls? Sakura one day finds a mysterious book containing a set of cards. Before I start typing the plot, can I just say, these anime protagonists are very dumb.
They just open up random unknown books and stuff that doesn’t belong to them. Upon interacting with the book, she accidentally released all the monsters in the book and now the world is in danger. Geez, nice job Sakura. No wonder they call you useless. Oh, that’s a Naruto joke, never mind. Well, with her newly given magical girl powers, she now has to get all those monsters inside the book again.
21. Itakiss

Did you ever think your house would get destroyed and you’re going to live with the love of your life? No, me neither. Apparently, that’s how this series goes. Now I wish my house would get destroyed, but the most I’d get is an insurance company coming my way.

Aihara secretly is in love with Naoki, but her fate was already sealed as she tried to give him a single love letter. But Aihara still doesn’t let her hopes down and tries to make Naoki fall in love with her clumsy and troublesome personality.
20. The World is Still Beautiful

Here is a fantasy world for you. Imagine the world is divided into two parts, the Sun Kingdom and the Rain Dukedom. People of Sun Kingdom have never seen or heard of rain and the opposite goes for the Rain Dukedom.
Now the ruler of the Sun Kingdom, Livius Orvinus, finds out people of the Rain Dukedom can summon rain with the power of their voice. He travels to that country, only to find out people on the opposite side think of him as a tyrant and a cruel ruler. The show consists of Nike Remercier, the princess of Rain Dukedom, and Livius finding out their differences and accepting the fact that life on the other side is not always good.
19. Say, “I Love You.” (Sukitte Ii na yo)

Here is a story where the girl is very pessimistic. Say, “I Love You.” Is the story of Mei Tachibana, a girl who thinks that her friends will always let her down. This is the reason for a grade school incident that happened with her.
She was wrongfully blamed for the death of their class pet and from then she became this sad and depressed person. But all this changes and her life starts to get filled with colors when Yamato, a guy who finds her intriguing, saves her from a stalker and helps her get her life back on track. However, Mei finds it very hard to adapt after all this time being pessimistic. The show has some cliché moments but it gives us an overall good story.
18. Rumbling Hearts

Have you watched Erased? You know, the show where the protagonist woke up from a coma and found the love of his life with his best friend’s child. Rumbling heart is a full-on drama with lots of twists and turns.
Long story short, Suzumia confesses to Narumi. Narumi accepts and now they’re dating. Suzumia goes into a coma because of an accident. Now after Suzumia wakes up from her 3 years of coma, she now discovers that things have changed and people are dating other people now. You get the hint. The drama is just overflowing from this one.
17. My Little Monster (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun)

I feel like whenever it’s a Shoujo anime, the anime production studio seems to focus more on girls being protected by a guy. My Little Monster is not any different. Shizuku Mizutani, our MC, is a schoolgirl who wants to focus on her grades and live a normal life. But her life changed when she met Haru, the school troublemaker.
Though Shizuku didn’t like Haru at first, Haru proclaimed his liking for Shizuku, and him slowly changing his ways for Shizuku made her like Haru. My Little Monster shows us Haru’s troublesome life and his fights, while Shizuku helps him become calmer and more caring. It is More of a beauty and the beast story.
16. Kiss Him, Not Me!

Kiss Him, Not Me! is a story about a girl named Kae Serinuma, who loves BL or Boys Love genre very much. So much that she can not help but fantasize about her male classmates in similar BL situations.
But one day, when she was watching her favorite show, she witnessed her favorite character dying. Sad and depressed, Kae could not handle this and locked herself in her room and did not eat for a week.
After a week, Kae finally came out of the room only to find out that some other girl was standing in front of her and she is very beautiful. But what she didn’t notice was, it was a mirror and the girl was her after losing weight. Now, Kae has become the popular girl in class with guys drooling over her but all she wants is to watch them in BL scenes and not flirt with her. The story is pretty funny and over-exaggerated but it’s a good binge.
15. Ouran HighSchool Host Club (Ouran Koukou Host Club)

Whenever someone recommends a Shoujo anime, this name comes up every time. Are you familiar with Japan’s host culture? Ouran High School Host Club features the high school life of Haruhi and his other host club members who attend to girls with their unique features.
Haruhi, our MC, one day broke a very valuable vase in the host club and became the errand boy of the famous club, because Haruhi came from a poor family and could not repay the vase. But as the anime progresses, we are able to see Haruhi outshine herself as a full-time host and gain the trust of other hosts. The show has an amazing comic timing with a slight touch of flirtatious lines. If you’re okay with 2000s animation then you’re going to love the show. But have you ever tried to run a personality test to know which character are you? Not yet? Then go ahead and try!
14. Lovely Complex

If you ever thought girls have huge expectations when it came to choosing their boyfriends, then you have to watch this show. The show consists of Risa, a very tall girl, who can not land a guy because of her height, and yet she never dates the guys that are interested in her.
She became so dense that she never even noticed how cool her friend/rival Ootani is. But after a little push from Risa’s friend Nobuko, Risa finally found Ootani as a love interest. But only if things were this easy. Ootani is denser than THE ROCK and oftentimes thinks her feelings are ways of her teasing him.
So, the anime consists of how Risa and Ootani come together as a couple and what happens after they are a couple. The show is very lovey-dovey and if you are into that, this is the show.
13. Blue Spring Ride (Ao Haru Ride)

Do you believe that love only comes once in your life? Did you watch a lot of Disney movies about prince charming? Blue Spring Ride is kind of similar. Futaba, a very popular girl in middle school, had a crush on a guy named Kou.
She had very wholesome hand-holding memories. Memories that she cherished and wanted to further nurture it into them dating later on. But for some misunderstanding, Kou, one day left Futaba’s life and she had to spend the rest of her middle school life friendless. But now in high school, Futaba wants to redeem herself.
She tries to stand out with her tomboyish personality and stays away from the mistakes she might have done to lose her friends in the past. Call it fate, Kou re-enters Futaba’s life and with that, a world of drama and change in her life occurs again. The show is actually good. It keeps you on your toes and makes you think about what might have happened.
12. Natsume’s Book of Friends (Natsume Yuujinchou)

Finally, A Shoujo that went out of the box and created something amazing. Natsume Takashi, a 15-year-old boy, inherited his deceased grandmother’s book of friends. The book consists of spirits or youkai that Natsume’s grandmother had captured.
Now, Natsume is being haunted by those spirits that want to be free and are sometimes malicious towards Natsume.
When I was 15 years old, I used to get bullied and this kid here is making friends with ghosts. Natsume also has a friend/bodyguard named MADARA. No, Not Madara from Naruto. Madara is a cat spirit that protects Natsume from any evil spirits. The show brings a whole new meaning to the word Shoujo and I’m sure you have never seen anything like this.
11. Nana

Nana is a show that tells us the story of two women who are both named Nana. Nana Komatsu, a girl who easily falls in love and becomes dependent on her partner. This often causes her relationship to end badly.
On the other hand, Nana Osaki is a thriving band vocalist, who is fairly popular and wants to get famous by going to Tokyo. Because of faith or by luck, both Nana and Nana travel on the same train and get to meet up. They somehow get to share the same room overnight and learn about each other. The show is mostly about both protagonists supporting each other and later on falling for each other. There I recommend the best GL manga list!
10. My Love Story

Are you single and lonely? If the answer is yes, then you’re going to be even lonelier after knowing that this dude landed a girl like this and you are still living in your mom’s basement. Gouda Takeo, a larger-than-average high schooler with his muscular build and tall stature, one day saves a girl from being attacked on a train.
Turns out, the girl is one of his classmates and wants to repay the favor to Takeo. Though Takeo looks like a 32-year-old guy who is probably going to turn out to be on the FBI wanted list, he actually has a golden heart and is a man of chivalry and courage.
After finding out about Takeo’s personality, Rinko AKA the girl he saved, falls for him, and turns out Rinko is kind of a cults. She trips, makes mistakes, and probably one day is going to burn the house down. The show is very wholesome with Takeo and Rinko having very precious moments for the first time in their life and Makoto, Takeo’s best friend, always helping them with their hardships in their relationship. Can you believe, Takeo thought a fly sat on his lips when Rinko kissed him. That’s not all! Try to read some of our beautiful My Love Story quotes!
9. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Anohana is a story about a boy named Jinta who could not forget about his lost friend Menma. Menma died years ago, and ever since then, Jinta has been different. He sees her everywhere and is convinced he is seeing illusions.
Until, his friends also start seeing her, eventually convincing everyone that Menma is back from the dead. The story seems scary and supernatural, but in reality, it is a tear-jerker. I can’t really explain everything as the plot is very simple and it would spoil a lot.
But the show is one of the most emotional shows I have ever watched. The show consists of Jinta and Menma reliving their childhood memories to finally set her free.
8. Bloom Into You

Bloom into You is a show about a girl who is going through puberty and finding out who she is attracted to in a that way. The story is about Koito, a girl who has a bubbly personality and loves reading romantic manga and stories.
Her heart flutters to find out when her prince charming would come into her life. But every time she got asked out by a boy, she felt kind of hollow. But after enrolling in high school, something changed. She feels excited around the student council president. She feels butterflies in her tummy when she sees her. Turns out, she’s into girls. So, if you’re into a good girl-on-girl hand-holding action, this show is for you.
7. My Next Life as a Villainess

Where most isekai protagonists gain awesome powers and rule the world, this isekai leads our MC, Catarina to her doom every time. Catarina, in her real life, played a dating simulator and knew every ending of that game.
But after she got isekaied, she found herself as the villain of the game. Now Catarina struggles every day to find an ending that would end with her living and everyone being happy. The show is a reverse harem with everyone surrounding Catarina and flirting with her. But as all protagonists are, she is also as dense as THE ROCK.
6. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Have you noticed? The shows that contain the concept of time travel are often considered a masterpiece. Makoto, a high school girl, who is bored with her life and wants to add some fun to her life.
She is having a hard time deciding what to do with her future. She is struggling to find out if she wants to focus on her future or spend time with her friends. One day, Makoto found a device that let her leap through time, and by using that she started to experiment the concept of time.
But tragedy struck as she saw her future slowly crumbling because of her leaping through very important parts of her life thus making it so she was absent at that moment. Do give this show a chance as it is phenomenal.
5. Romeo X Juliet

I wish they made more anime like this, where the female character had a leading role in action and fight scenes. Romeo X Juliet is exactly what you are thinking. It’s that same old Shakespeare story but with a twist.
Juliet can actually fight in this one. Finally, we came full circle and gave women equality. Jokes aside, Juliet and Romeo are two heirs of two families that are enemies. Both Romeo and Juliet, not knowing about each other’s backgrounds, met during a fight. Somehow, they clicked with each other and fell in love.
But after finding out the truth both of them went their separate ways, as they had different ambitions. But as the story later shows, love Is stronger than war. They both join forces and put an end to this stupid war. A far better ending than the one Shakespear wrote I presume.
4. Orange

Another Shoujo that took a different route and created something amazing. Orange is a show that features the plot of time travel. What would you do if you ever received a letter from the future telling you that your life is full of regrets and sadness?
Orange tells us the story of Naho, who received a letter telling her about her future and now has to change her future based on clues given in that letter. We all regret our life somehow. We think, what if we chose a different route in the past what would happen? Orange gives the protagonist a second chance in life and only she now is responsible for what happens next.
3. Kaichou wa Maid Sama

I feel bad that I have to score this anime. If I score it too harshly, the girl viewers are going to hate me. Literally, some of our female viewers have grown up saying Usui is their husbando. We are all familiar with the concept of a guy getting admission at a female high school. This one is exactly the opposite.
Misaki, our MC, is the first girl to get admission in an all-boys high school, after it converted to co-ed. She worked hard and gained the president seat of student council president and is now working towards making the high school more female-friendly.
You might think the plot is boring, but the twist is Misaki comes from a very poor family and has to work at a maid café to support her family. One day her hopes and dreams come crashing down when one of her school’s most notorious boys, Usui, finds out about her part-time job and now teases her, making her days even frustrating. But our best boy Usui often comes to her help and protects her. The show has a really good ending in the manga. To know more about the characters, you should try to know their birthdays! Fun fact, “The best color on Misaki is transparent”-Usui Takumi 2010.
2. From Me to You (Kimi ni Todoke)

From Me to You is a banger of a show. It has everything that a good romance anime should have. The animation is top notch, they show the expressions of our characters so well that it basically emphasizes the scene by a lot.
The story is about Sawako and how she is the most introverted girl in the class. Despite being the quiet kid, she actually has a sweet and cheerful part to her that nobody tries to explore. Through her daily life, she gets drawn to Shouta, the hero of the story. The show consists of Sawako coming out of her shell and Shouta being there to help her. The show has a really good storyline and features a scene on how to fight bullying. It’s a must-watch.
1. Golden Time

Did someone order a show filled with drama? Get your popcorn because Golden Time is one hell of a roller-coaster. Banri Tada, our protagonist, has amnesia due to a tragic accident. He is now at a new place trying to find new friends and get his feet back up.
Until Kouko Kaga comes into his life and makes him experience one unforgettable year filled with memories and drama. The show is really well animated and it gets you hooked up from the first episode.
Conclusion

LOOK INTO MY EYES AND COMMENT your fav anime… Quick!
Finally, whether it is Shoujo or Shounen, it should not matter if the story is worth watching. I have seen many banger Shoujo anime become underrated because the majority of the audience were going for the overhyped Shonen anime. So, with this, I hope that our readers will try some of these Shoujo anime and have a change of heart. You can also check some of our recommendations for the best shoujo manga of all time!

Corpse Party Based on a popular survival game, Corpse Party doesn’t disappoint. This anime is the definition of horror, with its dark backgrounds and gory scenes, Corpse Party manages to deliver a great horror story. The school where they’re stuck is haunted and our main character tries to survive it. 23. Gosick This is a show for noir movie lovers. Gosick follows the adventures of two siblings as they try to solve mysteries across their country. Kagewani The recent Godzilla movie has caused many fans to go and rewatch various shows involving monsters and Kaijus. And if you’re hungry for some more monsters and unknown creatures, Kagewani is the anime for you. Terra Formars Girls are going to hate this one, what can be more terrifying than a cockroach? A humanoid cockroach who’s on a mission to purge all humans. The characters in this show are so well designed that every time you look at them you’d feel uneasy. The nasty grin the cockroach makes is enough to give you nightmares! As these roaches wreak havoc, our defenders combine with various insect powers to eliminate these pesky little bugs. Pest control at its finest! 19. School Live The world is plagued with zombies and the entire existence of humanity is on the line, but this won’t stop our main characters from going to school. Seriously, this isn’t a joke, one of them is depressed, and knowing that humanity is fighting for its survival will be enough to break them. The show manages to find a balance between cute moments and genuinely horrific gory scenes, where humans get devoured whole. A must-watch for psychological thriller fans. 18. Deadman Wonderland This show is crazy, to say the least, the scenes in this anime are really disturbing. The slaughter in this show is so gory and unpleasant to watch that horror fans love this show with all their heart. So he’s sent off to a facility where borderline crazy freaks who only have murder on their mind. This anime isn’t for the faint-hearted. 17. If the idea of killing greedy people seems good to you then this is the best anime for you. 16. Highschool of the dead Highschool of the dead is set in a world where a zombie apocalypse has just started. The high school classmates have to navigate through this horde of zombies if they want to survive. The show is great at combining fan service with gruesome gory scenes, the combination may seem unlikely but in this case, it just works. In some scenes, the show becomes a total shonen anime but when the people fighting to get brutally devoured we realize this is far from being a typical fighting anime. 15. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust It can’t get any more awesome than this, Vampire Hunter is one of the best classic anime of all time. The main character D is a Vampire hunter and has been killing these things for years, but one Vampire is causing him trouble, watch the anime to find out why. The animation though being old still manages to capture great moments and the fight scenes are filled with gory action scenes. 14. Devilman Crybaby Devilman Crybaby is a remake handled by Netflix, and they have done a great job at animating it. The show has one of the most gruesome and horrifying plots where unknown creatures are killing off humans. After attending a rave party, our main character becomes a devil-human hybrid and from there on it is only violence and murder galore. The use of techno music and psychedelic visuals put this show in a class of its own, though the animation may seem different than usual, when you watch the first couple of episodes, you’ll start loving it. The almost dystopian feel that this show brings to the viewers is spooky, to say the least. 13. Paranoia Agent The city Misoshina is thrown into chaos as a mass murderer is on the run and the authorities are having no luck capturing him. This pesky little murderer swiftly moves through crime scenes on his golden roller skates. With his golden bat, he slaughters people most inhumanly. Due to this the town folk are always on high alert. The anime is great at portraying the psycho of this mass murderer, and the art style and music just adds more flavor to the story. 12. Tokyo Ghoul Kaneki suffers a lot in this show, but his suffering managed to make him one of the most loved anime protagonists of all time. In a world plagued with ghouls, who devour humans, Kaneki is a normal kid. But one incident changes his life forever. After that incident, Kaneki has become a ghoul and can’t eat human food, the psychological trauma that Kaneki goes through is really hard to see. Tokyo Ghoul is a classic and should be watched by every weeb regardless of their taste. 11. Mononoke Mononoke is not everyone’s cup of tea. Its art style is experimental and not everyone would enjoy it, but if you’ve decided to get your mind fucked, this show is up for the task. The story follows a medicine seller who travels across Japan in search of Spirits, also known as Mononoke in the anime. He tries to capture these spirits, but before doing that he has to know what's the cause behind the spirits' carnage. This takes the show to another level, as the animation gets good in these parts. The anime has this weird quality to it that can’t be described. Watch the show to get this experience. It is worth your time. 10.
