25+ Anime where Mc is an overpowered Demon King

Top Anime where Mc is an overpowered Demon King

Anime featuring mighty demon lords became pretty popular already in the 2000s. There is just something so fun in watching these hilariously overpowered beings solve the problems of their own respective worlds with little to no character development. Why would they need any though, they are already, “Demon Kings!”

Believe me or not, but everyone has their own preferences when it comes to what should be the ground rule of this genre. Some people don’t even require the Demon Lords to be demons, thus many overpowered MCs and side characters are just vampires or Japanese folklore spirits.

Considering it’s hard to fill out a list with just pure Abrahamic versions of demons, we will take a look at the different portrayals of the Dark Lords. If you are interested in anime of this type, I can recommend taking a quick glance at the entries below!

26. Black Clover

Black Clover

I know what you are thinking. Black Clover does in fact have some devils, many of which possess such great power that it can crumble the human world. While Asta is not a devil himself, it was revealed some time into the series that a devil lives inside his grimoire.

While this devil would be weak on its own compared to other otherworldly beings, him empowering Asta’s rock-solid will and elven weapons with anti-magic makes a good combo. When Asta and his devil, Liebe made a pact, their balanced form became quite overpowered. A good entry I think!

25. Devilman: Crybaby

Black Butler

What happens when a devil and a man merge? They become Devilman. I’m not trying to joke around here, but this conclusion is truly a simple case. The anime is pretty neat all around though. The first-ever adaptation for the original manga came out way back in 1972, but that derailed from the story so much it eventually became a failure.

What can we expect from a Netflix adaptation? Not much honestly, and even though this anime wasn’t groundbreaking, it was fun. After the shy Akira and the bloodthirsty Amon joined forces in one body becoming a Devilman, the new powerhouse with Akira’s pure heart and Amon’s strength brought change for the world.

24. The Demon Girl Next Door

The Demon Girl Next Door

What would you do if one day you’d just wake up with horns and tails? The young girl named Yuuko had this exact problem. Her mom stated the issue: they are the descendants of the Dark Clan of demons, and the curse cast on them makes their lives miserable. The only way to get rid of this is to murder the successor magical girl from the Light Clan.

A certain girl pops up soon, and she didn’t only just save Yuuko from a truck but also became her classmate. They thus become friends and enemies at the same time.

23. Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle

The Demon Girl Next Door

Have you ever had trouble sleeping? Trying to fall asleep in a creepy haunted house might even be impossible for some, but for Princess Aurora, sleeping is the only thing in the world. Despite being imprisoned in the Demon King’s castle, she is trying hard.

This anime completely revolves around sleeping, especially how this young girl tries to do it. Make sure to check it out!

22. Blood Lad

Blood Lad

We have a Vampire Lord instead of a demon at our hands, but the careless Staz is just as entertaining as any other Dark Lord. He is the ruler of the Eastern District in Demon Lands, but he only focuses on the important stuff: Japanese culture.

One day a Japanese girl shows up, and she gets killed immediately. Staz almost falls into despair, but Fuyumi stays there with him as a ghost. Staz swears to resurrect her, and that makes the start of their adventure.

21. Chrono Crusade

Chrono Crusade

Let me ask you a question: In your opinion, how many anime will show up here which include a demonic companion for the main girl? Make sure to write your prediction down right now in the comments, and count the entries as you read.

Back at the start of the 20th century, the demon hunters Chrono and Rosette go on a journey to find the source of evil. The former is a demon himself, while the latter’s family was killed by Chrono’s demonic relative.

20. Ushio and Tora

Ushio To Tora

Shonen protagonists usually lack basic human sense. They can’t make strategic decisions, can’t stay away from danger, and most importantly, they love to get into action. Ushio is nothing like your average MC, he gives up at the start.

One day he finds an impaled beast named Tora in their shrine’s basement. Ushio takes a 180° turn on the spot and leaves. When a youkai outbreak happens, he has no choice but to work together with this smirky monster. The dynamic duo!

19. 3x3 Eyes

3x3 Eyes

The young man named Yukumo became a slave of the 3 Eyed demons, and his soul was absorbed in a process to make him immortal as well. Now he is stuck with a cute demon girl!

The problem lies within that female demon’s split personality: Sometimes she acts like a cute girl, and at other times she is a weapon of mass destruction herself. How will Yukumo deal with this?

18. Maoyu ~ Archenemy & Hero

. Maoyu ~ Archenemy & Hero

While it might sound dumb at first, this anime is a pretty good political and romantic drama. As the Hero made his way into the Demon Queen’s castle, he made an astonishing discovery: she is a beautiful woman, and she also seeks peace.

War has been raging on between humans and demons for a while, and the common enemy brought the mortal nations together. If the war would come to an end, the citizens of the Southern States would suffer due to the lack of supplies from the other powers that have offered them help to keep the war effort going.

If you are interested, you can watch not only a blooming romance between the destined enemies but also a fun ride of politics and adventure to make the world a better place.

17. Beelzebub

Anime about gangs and delinquents are having the time of their lives due to Tokyo Revengers’ popularity. But it made me wonder, how could a gang-based anime be even better? The answer is simple: baby Satan!

The thug high schooler Tatsumi one day encounters a not so much Moses-like situation at the riverbed and finds a baby with green hair. Soon the baby’s serving maid shows up too and informs our MC that the child is no other than Beelzebub. Now they are working together to raise up the little hellspawn.

16. Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan

Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan

Rikio Nura lived a peaceful life for the most part as a half yokai and half-human creature. It was a huge surprise for him that people thought of his kind as ferocious monsters, and he decided to stay as human as possible.

Rikio had a hard time balancing out his life, as both supporters and enemies appeared along his way. As a descendant of the legendary Nurarihyon, responsibilities towered above head easily. What can a loner fox spirit do to gain respect among humans?

15. ENDRO!

There are many never-ending cycles in our lives. Seasons change, we go to work on Monday and the wifi shuts down once in a while. But in another world, namely, the Narai Islands a new Demon Lord rises up every generation, and a new team of heroes has to take care of them.

But the newest Demon Lord managed to travel back in time before her defeat, and she became a teacher in the school, where the aspiring future heroes go to. With the destined enemies being right next to each other, a weird story begins.

14. As Miss Beelzebub Likes it

As Miss Beelzebub Likes it

Hell is a horrible place according to tradition. But wait, what if the prince of Hell, Beelzebub was a cute girl living in a cute castle in her own kingdom? For me the answer is easy: take my life.

Quite a weird depiction of the murderous devil. Countless other creatures show as time passes there, including Belphegor, Azazel, and Astaroth. But this time, everyone is a nice gentleman or lady, and the fluffy dream of the supernatural can live without an issue.

13. Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits

Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for spirits

The abandoned child Aoi had a special ability from her birth: she can see the spirits called ayakashi. Her grandfather had the same power, and they lived together until he passed. Aoi once decided to feed a stray ayakashi, and in doing so she was transported to their world.

That ayakashi, Oodanna turned out to be the resident ogre god. Don’t ask me. He had an inn and demanded Aoi to marry her as payback for her grandfather’s massive debt to him. She decided to operate a diner as a chef at the place instead of becoming the wife of this weird man.

12. Devils and Realist

Devils and Realist

When a noble family draws to the edge of poverty, drastic moves have to be made. William did so when his uncle failed his business. After searching the house for goods, he accidentally summoned a devil in a weird room.

The devil Dantalion appears, who tells William that he was chosen as a mediator for the demonic world. He now will be able to choose the acting ruler of the other world, which comes as a great surprise for the boy, and for us too.

11. Black Butler

Would you like another cup of tea, good sir?

If you ever dreamed of becoming a professional butler, then take lessons from Sebastian. Despite being a powerful demon, he also does a wonderful job serving Ciel, the revenge-seeking head of the Phantomhive household.

They make a good team, especially due to Sebastian’s quick-witted moves. Every scene is a different look at his majestic abilities, and you have a feeling that you are actually watching Sakamoto.

10. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

How not to summon a demon lord

The strongest Demon Lord and catgirls? I could never dream of a better combination. Based on a video game isekai cliche, the powerhouse Diablo gets summoned to the world by two beautiful girls. They expected Diablo to be their slave, but it somehow worked vice versa.

Diablo isn’t sure how to deal with the developments, as he was just a virgin playing a video game. The suicide squad goes on missions together and they quickly gain reputation. Diablo gets into many interesting situations, and he definitely likes it.

9. Rage of Bahamut: Genesis

Rage of Bahamut: Genesis and Seven Deadly Sins share a lot of similarities, from their middle-aged setting to their MCs being perverts. Both have kingdoms under the threat of some nasty evil forces. Both have a world where they're able to use magic. And lastly, the bittersweet relationship/rivalry between the MC and his best friend. The story of the Rage of the Bahamut is set in a magical world named Mistarcia, where every kind of magical creature exists. As soon as the demon beast "Bahamut" threatened their peace, humans, gods, and demons worked together to defeat it to restore peace. The Bahamut was sealed and there were two keys to unseal it; the god key and the demon key. One day, peace is disrupted when the god key is stolen by some mysterious woman (Yikes!). Now, the peace and harmony lie in the hands of our heroes who are willing to sacrifice their lives for it!

While this anime was only made to advertise a card game, we can say that the product is absolutely alright by itself. MAPPA did a great job at building up the world, making every moment stick to us.

Every fantasy universe had a big bad monster lived long ago, in this case, Bahamut. The dragon was locked up, but a complete key to its seal can bring destruction to the world again. The bounty hunter frenemy duo of Favaro and Kaisar one day meets Amira, a demon who claims to have half the said key. Bringing on multiple known mythological entities, this anime is all around pretty good!

8. Demon King Daimao

Demon Kiong daimao

Let me present the deal of the century to you: people will treat you as the future Demon King that brings chaos to Earth, but you will get a harem of cute girls. Easy choice, right?

Akuto was on his way to his magic academy, but to his surprise, people started spreading rumors that he will become the Demon King one day. He lost his friends, and every one of his actions further proves his destiny. On the other hand, Akuto got the attention of every woman, and while some wanted to get rid of him, others just wanted to shower with the Daimao.

7. The Devil is a Part-Timer!

The Devil is a part timer

Referred to as the Mc Donalds isekai most of the time, it’s time for the most laid-back comedy. The creatively named Maou leaves his world when the Hero overwhelmed his forces and finds himself in modern-day Japan with his sidekick. They soon have to realize that life here is a little different.

Maou sarts working in the local fast-food chain to make a living, and their life is just a funny mess from that point. The Demon Lord lives in borderline extreme poverty, but he is seemingly fine with it.

6. Blue Exorcist

Blue Exorcist

Being locked out of your own house is not the best feeling of all time, but if you are a Demon King, and you are locked out of the other world that you wanted to conquer, it might be even worse.

The said Demon King thus sent his son, Rin to become a nice vessel he could possess in the future. Rin lived his life like a normal obnoxious teenager for some time, but when he found out that his father is the bad guy, he decided to defend his world with all his might. As the son of Satan, it will be an easy ride for sure, haha!

5. InuYasha

A big fan-favorite shonen from the early 00s now makes an appearance on this list. InuYasha isn’t only a calm watch for the lovers of action-based anime, but it also presents some interesting ideas throughout the series.

Like in the case of previous entries, Inuyasha also isn’t a traditional Demon King MC, but it frankly doesn’t matter. He is a half-demon who decided to step up for the good cause and help Kagome collect the Jewel Shards. Inuyasha is also quite powerful, and with the overall quality of the show, I think it deserves a place this high.

4. Overlord

This game-based isekai is another great example of the genre. The Overlord or Ainz Ooal Gown is a giant skeleton lord, who actually plays the massively overpowered bad guy. What a premise!

When the skilled YGGDRASIL player Momonga lost the meaning of his life – to play this DMMO-RPG – when the servers were announced to shut down, he decided to spend the last minutes of gameplay sleeping on his throne. To his surprise, he woke up in a new word completely based on the known game of YGGDRASIL

As one of the strongest beings, he reigned as an almighty emperor in the new world. Now literally absorbed in the Overlord personality, Ainz has nothing better to do than live his best life.

3. Seven Deadly Sins

Seven Deadly Sins

As a community, we hold different opinions when it comes to rating SDS. The animation – and overall – quality dropped massively as new seasons came out. On the other hand, there are many well-written characters in the show, and the overall feeling is just catchy.

While some say that you should just go and read the manga, let’s talk about the protagonist, Meliodas. He is the son of the Demon King, but as the latter eventually got defeated by the virtuous son, Meliodas became the successor to the title. He was a good guy all along, and as the Sin of Wrath, he waged war against his younger brother Zeldris and the rest of the Demon King’s forces.

Meliodas was pretty powerful, always increasing his power levels. Meliodas could only be surpassed by Escanor at exactly noon, but for the most time, the final Assault Mode reigned supreme in the universe.

2. High School DxD

high school dxd

I feel like I have a divine mission to include this masterpiece on every list that barely fits the criteria. High School DxD is immaculate, made only for the most cultured weebs out there. There’s not only an ocean of romance scenes, but the smarter fellas can also enjoy the mythological references all the way through. But now, this anime fits the article perfectly!

Issei Hyoudou wasn’t born a demon, but after he got catfished and killed on his first date, the King-class demon Rias Gremory decided to turn him into a hellish being and grant the little boy another life. What she wasn’t prepared for was definitely Issei’s insane perversion.

He literally gains power from touching “a woman’s chest area,” which was greatly utilized in Rias’ team. As it turned out, Issei inherited the power of Ddraig, one of the two Heavenly Dragon Emperors, and he can be considered one of the strongest beings in the universe. As time went on, he became the de facto decision maker of the demonic world, but only after leveling up multiple times by grabbing multiple b**bs.

1. Misfit of The Demon King Academy

the misfit of the demon king academy

Well well well, we came to the best part right now. I wholeheartedly believe that Misfit of The Demon King Academy – which isn’t even the full title of the show – fits this genre the best. Anos Voldigoad is the definition of an overpowered Demon King, indicated by the original title.

He just simply cannot be defeated by anyone. After a long break of nonexistence for 2000 years, Anos reincarnated to check on the world he purposefully left back then. The long-lasting war between demons and humans could only be resolved with his death, so he made a pact with the Hero Kanon, and gave up his life.

When he came back, Anos had to realize that his legacy is twisted to its fullest. Even his name was forgotten, and an impostor claims to be the real demon lord instead of him. Anos decided to uncover the mystery.

As he wasn’t born into a pureblood family, he got discriminated against by the school he went to in every way possible. Despite his incredible strength, such as deleting giant objects in a blink of an eye or manipulating time and space, no one believed that he is the true Demon King! How can people make a mistake like that?

most anime seemingly moves at a break neck pace while leaving out important stuff and even tho its just a missed scene in “area” or a missed line that would help the common person identify with the story abit more its sad to see hopefully season 4 of overlord wont miss too much id suggest the light novels or the webnovels as well for anyone actually interested in the series above as all of these have webnovels or light novels that are on going the anime is going for the light novel version and the webnovel is the first draft before the light novel comes out <3 still unsure which is fan service i think its the anime ngl

In my opinion “That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime” should be here, and at the top 5 at that.

Too bad that some people have issues with that…But it has more than a cult following…It’s not slow…and i guess it is following the novel more accurately…
