Cyborg 009 is the next anime to feature on this list. I know all of us have wished to become a superhero at some point in our lives, right? However, it’s not possible in real life.

But. this dream became a reality for our MC, Joe Shimamura. One day, when he woke up, he realized that he had become super strong and could do stuff normal humans could not do. Soon, he finds out that he has actually become a Cyborg and is part of an experiment by the Neo-Black Ghost, an evil organization.

There were a total of 9 humans turned into cyborgs. All of them have different abilities such as underwater breathing and being able to melt any material. The story continues as Joe and the others try to destroy Black Ghost. This anime is a gem. You should definitely give it a shot.

His girlfriend lost her life in this tragic incident, and Takuto, himself, got quite injured. His face was unrecognizable. He was depressed. He wanted to do something about it.

He sought help from a mysterious man and transformed himself into Ryu Soma, a Cyborg. If you’re a fan of space tech and mecha, then this show will teach you a lot.

Next entry on this list is Tekkaman Blade. This show is quite different from others on this list.

The plot of this show revolves around Blade. Blade possesses a mysterious stone called the Tekno Crystal, which somehow transforms him into a HUGEEE ROBOT, Tekkamon.

Using this ability, Blade manages to fight Radam, a mysterious alien. However, this show is not just about a superhero saving the Earth. It is a lot deeper. Blade’s past was quite traumatic, and he is also shown to have Amnesia

He faces a lot of difficulties and his life is not that easy. The series incorporates some romance as well. If you’re a fan of action and drama, then this one is for you.

Mazinkaiser SKL is quite underrated in my opinion. A lot more people should talk about it.

The plot of this show revolves around a mysterious, mechanical Island. Three superpowers namely, Airan, Kiba, and Garan, are fighting each other in order to gain control of it. At first, it was not that serious. However, as things progressed, things got out of hand and now the whole world was in danger

The World Government decided to do something about it. They incorporate a special squad Death Caprice to stop them. This squad also includes our MC, Mazenkasier bot. Now, it is in the hands of Mazenkaiser and the others to save everyone and stop this stupid war.

This show reminds me of the early 1990s mecha anime. You should deffo give it a shot.

The plot of this anime might resemble Sword Art Online a bit. But, believe me! It is quite different. The story features 15 children who got tricked into playing a strange game.

These children were actually playing on a beach when they discovered a mysterious cave there. And you guys know kids, they have to poke their noses into EVERYTHING!! As soon as they entered the cave, it was obvious that this cave is not normal.

There were a lot of machines and strange stuff. A man named Kokopelli appeared out of nowhere and claimed that this stuff belonged to him. He also managed to trick the children into playing a game he had developed. And guess what? They are now trapped inside the cave.

This is why I HATE CHILDREN!!!

Have you guys ever wondered what would’ve happened if dinosaurs were still alive? I know it sounds crazy.

The plot of this show is somewhat similar. But, instead of real dinosaurs, there are metallic ones. These Mecha Dinosaurs waged a war against humanity and got them by surprise. Humans lost most of their man power and were devastated. They even lost their best chance, the Getter Robo

Now, this is where the real fun begins. Tomoe and Hayato Jin took charge of the Getter Robots being manufactured at the Saotome Research Institute

The storytelling of this show is one of the most consistent ones I’ve ever seen. Coupled with decent animation and amazing character development, this anime is a gem.

Last Exile is the next feature on this list. This show is pretty underrated in my opinion. I don’t see many people talking about it.

The plot revolves around Planes and War. Claus Valca and Lavie are the protags of this show. They have a HUGGEEE dream, and that is to cross the Grand Stream in a Vanship. However, to achieve this dream, they have to solve the mystery behind Anatoray and Disith’s war.

They also meet a mysterious girl on their journey. This show is quite old as it aired back in 2003. Still, its animation is just exquisite. You should deffo give it a shot.

Now, this is one series I don’t want to spoil. Hmmmm!! I guess I should just explain the plot a little bit.

This anime is set in the future where humans no longer live on Earth. In order to survive in space, they have genetically modified themselves. Things were going peacefully. However, it all changed when the Wulgarus got out of control and waged a war against humanity.

The genetically engineered humans were somehow managing. However, it was getting difficult without the help of a particular squad. I guess this is where I should stop. Otherwise, I’ll spoil too much.

In order to end it, Pilot Kei Katsuragi was given a mission to drop the Space/Time Oscillation bomb on the rival nation.

She did what she was told, andddd the results were definitely not what they expected. This bomb opened a multi-dimensional portal unleashing different realities, dimensions, and timelines into the world. Will Katsuragi be able to reverse everything?

Another anime that is set up in the future. Well! That’s to be expected as we are talking about anime regarding mecha

In this show, Humans are at war against the Festums. Well! I wouldn’t say everything was going smoothly, but it was quite good until the Mirs managed to enter Earth’s atmosphere. These mysterious creatures started living alongside humans. Apparently, it was really easy for them to adapt. However, for humans, it was not.

Some Mirs did hate humans and attacked them. This marked the beginning of humanity’s struggle. This show has just 6 episodes. So, if you’re looking for an anime to binge, you should give it a shot.

This anime features the story of Atiko, a guy who is more interested in cooking instead of giant robots and wars. However, his life was turned upside down when his home got burned to ashes on Mars and he somehow got teleported to Earth, where a war was going on.

On Earth he started following Yurika, the girl he liked, and ended up on a HUGEEE ship named Nadesico. Even though he was not interested in war, he still had to fight for humanity and the earth. Now, the main question is, where is the romance? Well! The relationship between Atiko and Yurika slowly progresses as the story goes on. Y’all have to be patient.

Raphxephon is unlike other Mecha anime on this list. It is not just about some Robots fighting to save Earth. It is much deeper.

The story revolves around Ayato Kamina, a seemingly normal high schooler. His life was quite peaceful on the surface until, one day, he saw two jet fighters. He noticed that these planes are quite different from the ones he had previously seen.

After this, his life was never the same as realized that he was living inside a time bubble. Now, this is where the real fun begins. He mysteriously got some superpowers as well. Why tho? Well! He, himself, doesn’t even know.

This show is a great watch if you’re a fan of psychological shows with some action.

He named the robot Zeke and they became good friends. Some peeps did try to steal Zeke from him. However, he was able to fend them off somehow. The people of Evergreen were also devastated with serial killers and murderers roaming freely. They asked for Van’s help. At first, he denied. But, when he found out that there is a connection between that mysterious man and the villains of this city, he decided to help them.

The plot of this show is somewhat similar except for the fact that our MC Stick Bernard was already an expert pilot. Humanity was totally wiped out by Inbits. However, there were some survivors including Stick. Stick’s mental condition was not that great as he had lost his Fiance in this attack.

But, as the series progresses, he regains his passion and vows to destroy the Inbits. Will he be able to take revenge for his fiance? Well! You gotta watch the show and find out.

You won’t see many female protagonists in Mecha anime. In this regard, this show is definitely one of a kind.

Noriko Takaya is the daughter of a famous Mecha pilot who had once saved the Earth. With Aliens invading Earth once again, it was Noriko’s chance to show what she’s made of. However, with high expectations and her lacking talent for piloting, it won’t be that easy.

What do you think? This show aired wayyy back in 1989 and is an underrated gem.

This is a very old movie adaptation for Appleseed, a work by Masamune Shirow who is a very famous author. The people this anime movie is for are the ones looking for a classic movie who don’t want to think too hard about what they’re watching.

Its story is trippy and messy, and the characters and their motivations aren’t exactly complicated or reasonable. It’s got some good action scenes and great animation for the time period it came out on, which are the main reasons you’d want to watch it. It’s one of those “so bad yet so good” types of shows where you can just laugh about everything that happens and have a good time with it, possibly with friends.

Its protagonists are 2 cops, a mysterious robot guy and an independent lady. The enemy is a terrorist because, OF COURSE, HE IS. There’s an incredible amount of weird things happening all over the story that makes it an interestingly funny watch. It’s not painfully bad, nor does it make enough sense to be good, it’s just entertaining in its action and its stupidity.

The GHQ and a group of Rebels are fighting over Japan, the latter aiming for its freedom. This is yet another anime about a boy who gets insane power. There’s also a seemingly emotionless girl who eventually falls in love with him, as well as a third wheel who happens to be really cool and vicious.

The best part about this anime is the animation, soundtrack and the power of the protagonist, which is bringing weapons out of people’s hearts. It’s a unique power that made watching this show interesting for a lot of people, and hey, if you like cool powers, why not give it a go?

Vandread is a mecha anime about…gender wars. There are characters in this show that discriminate against the other gender to an insane degree.

A lot of the fights are influenced by it even. As bad of a concept as it sounds, it’s executed quite well considering neither side really “wins” but characters instead have their mistakes displayed in a way that teaches lessons.

There’s also good CGI in this show, which you don’t see a lot of. While this anime is obscure and not the best for everyone, I wouldn’t recommend watching it as it’s pretty decent.

It is a quite controversial anime, mainly because it being a mixed bag between a trippy plot and amazing fights and visuals. Its story falls short in many spots, to the point where it’s obviously noticeable and hard to rationalize or make excuses for, yet its fights and animation sequences are some of the best in mecha history.

If you’re looking for something with a nice story,  stay away from this show. If you want giant robots that are cool, or good fights, or just something nice to look at, this anime will be a good pick for you.

This is a classic from the 80’s that’s different from most mecha anime. It came out when the genre started blowing up and left a unique impression on the genre and franchise ever since, during its entire long run.

Most mecha anime are about fighting, the robots in them are built for war. In this show, they’re not, they work as machines that help with everyday life. It has thatwhat if technology went too far” plot of many books from the last century and incorporates it into an anime that’s a slice of life more than anything.

It’s more laid back due to that and its stronger aspects are its animation and comedy rather than its high tension scenes. That’s this anime’s determining factor; its casual attitude. If you’re looking for something full of battle and deep story, it’s not going to be above average for you.

If you want to enjoy a comedy about a guy walking around and solving the problems of technology and good visuals, it’s worth a watch.

This is an anime with an interesting plot, even though it’s pretty generic. Other than it being teens who are thrown into battle to protect the world. There’s a very popular female lead (Zero Two) and a protagonist who interacts a surprising amount with the rest of the cast around him, making this anime’s cast and execution unique.

If you like human, realistic characters that learn from each other, then this is definitely a show you don’t want to miss. It’s also one of the most famous mecha, especially in recent years, making it easy to talk about with others.

Break Blade is an interesting one. It’s a show about college friends. Unlike many mecha anime, the main cast are adults aged around 25 and they’re old friends who reunite to protect their country from an enemy attack. The mechas in this show somewhat resemble Gundam 00’s designs. The way they operate is through the use of magic or quartz.

The main character Rygart is one in a million chance of someone who can’t use this magic or machines (because of course, he is) which in turn allows him to use a more ancient and rare type of machine that Magic users can’t manage to figure out.

He’s a farmer, his best friend Hodr is the reluctant yet devoted king of their country and is married to their other friend Sigyn (most likely for benefit, as they don’t have much of a romance going on).

This show includes a variety of characters, from a criminal who attacks his own friends in a battle to an arrogant-looking but good-hearted general who spends all his money to help orphanages. There are good fights that are quite strategic, and clean animation that will win your heart right away.

FLCL is an anime about youth (My Guy!). It’s very over the top, crazy, energetic and quite weird. It’s about a boy during puberty and all the emotions he feels. His difficulties processing them.

The show seems all over the place, yet its focus is very clear; the personality and perception of a single teenager in a confusing world. It shows its entire story in only 6 episodes, which is unique by itself. If you like psychological stuff or wildly animated shows, FLCL is for you.

This anime revolves around a war between 2 types of humans, the earthlings and Martians. The Martians are extremely war-hungry and have grown to hate earth-lings. This is something you have to watch if you like heavy topics, but not if you’re looking for a goofy fun experience.

Something this anime is great at portraying is perspective. It shows the perspective of both sides, but never them talking it out or coming to an agreement. It’s an anime that reflects on humanity and how selfish they can be.

A very good and original anime from the 2000s. This is a classic anime that many people know and love, and even got introduced to anime from.

There’s a good sub and dub, as well as a lot of good comedy that’s universally praised. The anime switches studios 3 times, which is extremely rare, and each studio does an amazing job at adapting it. Its animation is simply beautiful as well. This is an anime you have to watch if you like mecha, especially comedy.

Being a new show from the Macross franchise, Macross Delta does a very good job in carrying out the story-telling style of the older series despite its casual and fun vibe. It’s an anime about singing, and how it fits evil. There’s a lot of emphasis on the characters considering their good writing, as well as the fast-paced yet well-developed story.

Its design is, of course, beautiful along with its sound effects (GOD, the sound effects). The battles are sonically and visually amazing and feel like concerts, making this an overall very enjoyable anime to watch and get you into the Macross franchise. The mechs also have a soft spot in my heart for their design, I personally really like how they look.

This Gundam is about a quite unique concept: Gunpla Suits. They are plastic models of robots that are collectable. In this show, of course, there’s as much fighting as in any Gundam and it’s well known for it. There’s a good team dynamic between Sei and Reiji, who eventually join a tournament and battle all kinds of enemies because of course, they do. The best part is that the characters are extremely diverse.

This includes people like Nils, who’s a rare mix of Asian and African-American, as well as Aila from the Finnish team. There are amazingly detailed and thoroughly animated fights, the quality of which is rarely found anywhere else. The dynamics and visuals are some of the best Gundam have to offer. Overall, a very well-designed show, and very enjoyable too.

MANGA.TOKYO decided to have a survey in 2017, about which Gundam is the most blood-pumping one. Guess which one won. No, no, guess, I’ll give you a chance. It was Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. It is one of the newer Gundam series, yet highly, highly loved by the fanbase. The story writing is especially a fan-favorite due to how tragic it is.

The story is written in a way that makes you feel for the characters, and makes every line 10 times harder than in your usual mecha show. The ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex is my own favorite mech in this particular series.

Eureka Seven is what a lot of people call a positive version of Evangelion. With its characters written in a way that makes them human and realistic, flawed yet charismatic, annoying yet inspiring, it really does a good job at portraying them as what they are: people. It has a simple storyline, though the more you rewatch it, the easier it becomes to spot new details throughout the episodes.

It’s visually amazing due to how many characters, places, fights and effects are animated so perfectly and fluidly. Its soundtrack is also highly praised, as it’s very diverse and unique. Definitely good at mixing seriousness and light-heartedness, and an anime that gives you an insight into real life and how people work.

This is the OG! The original gangster. The one that started it all. The first mature mecha anime ever made. Up until this show, mecha was cartoony and for pure entertainment without any actual depth. This show was Yoshiyuki Tomino’s breakthrough to a whole new genre of anime.

It takes place in the future and covers topics like war, morals, fascism etc. Amazing music and animation (ESPECIALLY for its time).

The mechas in this show are what inspired the future Gundams, which inspired pretty much the entirety of Mecha designs in the anime world. Though it’s old, it’s very well written and develops all of its characters to a good degree. Watching this classic is always a good idea. It’s the pioneer of sci-fi anime.

Absolutely gorgeous! That’s the first way I can think of to describe this movie. Its best point is definitely it’s clear, bright and explosive animation with its high-energy fights that give off a very Gurren Lagann-ish feeling.

A decent story with a good set of characters that you can sympathize with, the more you learn about them. A simple-headed protagonist, a rival that’s likeable enough to be Viral, as well as a villain that you hate but end up having a slight bit of connection to. Very entertaining watch.

Simply put… a post-apocalyptic sci-fi. It’s an anime movie on Netflix about exactly that. Known for a strange protagonist that’s unusually quiet and for its amazing worldbuilding, this anime movie is a rare instance of good quality despite it being CGI.

Its main purpose is to introduce you to the rest of the franchise, mainly the Manga, which happens to be the favorite manga of all time to a certain someone. You might know him, his name is Felix Kjellberg. Better known as PewDiePie.

This anime is about 2 countries, one of which is extremely technologically advanced and trying to take over the continent. This show covers topics like discrimination, which is interesting to see in an anime as long as it’s executed properly, which it is. A lot of people were cut off from the picture and had their citizenship stripped off them, and are still used in war to fight for the country.

The main characters are quite deep and well-developed, considering they’re in a heavy and eye-opening anime story. If you like shows like Attack on Titan or Code Geass, this anime is for you.

Very well-produced with an outstanding soundtrack and super smooth animation also. Depending on where the story goes in the future, you can watch it come out as a hidden gem or end up going downhill. The latter doesn’t seem likely, however, with how the story’s been going so far.

SSSS. Gridman is a story very related to SSSS.Dynazenon as they quite literally share a character. There’s a lot of things we don’t know in the beginning of this anime, as that is the point of it. To find out parts of the story as we go.

One of this anime’s best points is in its Gurren Lagann-ish vibe, considering a lot of the people working on it worked on Gurren also. It’s got something rare: very well animated CGI fights. I know, impossible. Until you give this show a chance and see for yourself. Also, has a literal reskin of Gurren Lagann’s Viral.

The war to stop all wars“. We’ve heard it many times. In other anime, of course, but even in human history. A very hard question that is very hard to answer, actually impossible to give a simple explanation to.

Well, if you like this topic, Gundam 00 is for you. You see, it’s a newer Gundam, plus it takes place in its own world separate from the rest of the franchise.

It’s about 3 parties fighting for power and getting everyone involved(or not) damaged. It’s about trying to control peace with power. It’s about morally difficult questions that it doesn’t answer right away. Which is logical.

It slowly brings up the topics, the character motivations, the morality of their goals, yet it doesn’t instantly say whether it’s “good” or “bad”.

It was the first Gundam that was released in both widescreen and HD, so it’s visually pleasing as well. If you watch the movie, it will give you a visual experience worth sticking with.

An isekai in which fictional characters, one by one, start coming out of the fictional world into the real one. The characters from stories get closer and closer to meeting their author. Extremely unique and interesting concept for an isekai.

There are a lot of references to western movies and other anime, along with an outstandingly creative set of characters that range from mechas to magical girls. If you want something different, this is not an anime to miss out on.

One of this story’s best aspects is its protagonist: Shiro. He’s a very interestingly done character. His way of fighting is usually reliant on his out-of-the box thinking and strategy. The kind of strategy that gives you a chance to figure it out, but turns out to be shocking yet reasonable when Shiro takes action.

It’s the “aha! so that was it!” more than solving problems easily through introducing something completely new like most anime. Having a protagonist like that and the main cast full of experienced soldiers that judge him and new soldiers that look up to him makes for a very good team dynamic. The animation? Beautiful.

Another one of the most-detailed animations in Gundam history. Very realistic and very environment-related. Mechs cause havoc, they literally melt sand into glass. Actual gear and mechanical parts working to operate the machines. Visually satisfying to see robots that are realistic and don’t feel completely like fiction. Overall great show, give it a watch if you haven’t.

SSSS. Dynazenon is what you watch after Gridman, and it’s even better. Its characters have better writing. There’s no Viral, but there’s a Kamina. There’s also somehow better fights than in Gridman. I would suggest watching Gridman first, as it’s a great show either way, and you need it to have a better idea of the story.

This show is a perfect follow-up, however, as it’s mecha at its best. Amazing characters, fights and super cool big robot battles. Also watchable by anyone, even people who prefer newer styles of anime.

Evangelion is one of the most well known, not only mecha, but anime in general. It’s an anime that’s watched by even non-anime fans, yet highly acclaimed by critics within the community too. Everyone loves it because it makes you cry, and the amount of tears you shed is mathematically proportional to a show’s quality(duh).

The mech designs are amazing due to how creature-like they look, somewhat resembling kaiju. The story itself involves a lot of mental health and self-esteem issues, and I’ll put it simply.

If you connect with it, you’re gonna like it, if you don’t it’ll just be a “meh” watching experience. The animation was surprisingly gorgeous compared to its time and never fails to amaze you. It’s definitely something you should watch sooner or later if you like mechas.

This might as well be the most well-known anime on this list, and that is, of course, for a good reason. It’s not something anyone should miss out on. It’s got a highly political theme, which puts a huge emphasis on grey morality. The main character is a genius from Japan, which is one of the few places in the world not taken over by the Holy Britannian Empire.

Its mechas are a secondary focus, as the political battle is the main, but as the story progresses, better and better-looking robots start to appear also. The main character of this show is considered to be one of the best in anime, period, ranked #1 in MyAnimeList. Because of course, he is. I would explain more, but I think you get the idea; that this isn’t a show you should miss out on.

In case you are planning to watch Code Geass, here is the watch order: COMPLETE Code Geass Watch Guide!

This anime has a simple plot: “Pierce through the heavens with your drill!”. No, but on a serious note, it’s amazing. There’s Simon, a shy 14-15 year old boy who lives underground, along with his older brother by a couple of years, Kamina. Kamina is the opposite of Simon, meaning he’s adventurous, inspiring, rebellious and every other cool adjective you can think of.

The anime starts off by them trying to break from the underground to live on the surface, but everyone is against them. Then, the anime keeps throwing more and more difficulties at them and shows how they handle their life. While the people around them struggle to live, they live to struggle. There’s no plot armor, a thrill in fights that’s never seen before anywhere else, as well as animation that will exceed your comprehension.

There’s also a very good example and message that’s set by our extremely well-developed characters, which only becomes stronger and deeper for the longer the show goes on: to live, create your own reality and never let the world bring it down, as well as to understand and support others if it’s something you can and are willing to do. It’s not only the most enjoyable and flashy show you’ll ever watch, but the most meaningful one too.

Conclusion

zero two

We hope you enjoyed this list!. The Mecha genre is filled with different kinds of anime, you’d never expect a lot of diversity in it, though there is. There’s a mecha anime for every kind of anime fan. Whichever one of these shows has your interest, give it a chance. Mecha is one of the most thoughtful and deep genres you’ll find, which is surprising, as you’d expect the opposite from shows filled with giant epic fighting robots!
