Even though The Tatami Galaxy is a novel, its illustrations are so good that you will feel like you’re watching an anime. The story tells us about a disillusioned college student who expects a lot from his upcoming university life.
He traveled through four parallel realities just to fulfil his expectations of what might’ve been and what should never have been. It’s like he fantasizes a lot about his university before going to one that he travels through different clubs in his imagination.
The story of The Tatami Galaxy is a bit hard to understand. After our MC makes it to the prestigious Kyoto University, he’s on the verge of dropping out. He, along with his friend, Ozu has received persona non gratas on the university campus.
For two years, Watashi made all the worst decisions and he’s going to keep doing that. Watashi, along with his creepy friend Ozu, has to take their revenge on the film club. They’re preparing a fireworks attack for the welcoming party of the upcoming members of the club.
But a self-proclaimed god has different plans for him. He will set Watashi up with the most charming girl on campus, named Akashi. Is our MC brave enough to make a move yet? Is he out of his fantastical and delusional imagination yet?
As expected, Watashi wasn’t ready to make his move, and as a result, he let this opportunity slip away from his hands. What if Watashi ditched his best friend for the sake of a new club-the club of his dreams and became confident enough to get with the girl of his dreams?
Now, a new opportunity comes his way as time rewinds and brings him to the mat of his dorm room. Watashi is successfully trapped in a series of parallel universes due to his regrets in the present.

2. Tatami Time Machine Blues
Tatami Time Machine Blues is a sequel that was originally published in 2020. It merges the characters of The Tatami Galaxy along with Makoto Ueda’s play and film known as Summer Time Machine Blues.
It tells about the day when Ozu “the terrible friend” accidentally drowns the only air conditioning remote into the water. As everyone’s discussing their predicament with Akashi, our MCs love interest arrives from the future. She comes from 25 years in the future asking Watashi to borrow his time machine so that she can snatch the remote control from the past before it ends up breaking!

This 11-episode, dark comedy anime, might take a lot to understand the plot. But once you dive into it, it becomes interesting and impressive. You will learn a lot from this anime as well. Life is not a bed of roses and that’s for sure. That’s something our MC aka “Watashi” needs to understand.
The story tells us about our delusional MC who finished his college entrance exams and now dreams of perfect rose-colored campus life at his university. Due to this, he gets different opportunities to join different clubs.
He can’t seem to find himself in the series of parallel universes’ opportunities. He keeps on exploring how his life would be if he joined a specific club. In every episode, he joins a new club and spends two years in it.
Every episode passes like that. His imagination is so vague that he can’t even picture the love of3 his life properly. He would just see her hair and clothes, no facial features at all. However, he comes across a creepy guy named Ozu and befriends him.
He also meets a sophomore, Akashi with whom he becomes pretty close. Then Watashi comes across a fortune teller who informs him about the opportunity of hanging in front of his eyes.
This reminds him of a mochiguman keychain that Akashi lost. The keychain was hanging in his apartment with the pull switch, he forgot to return it to Akashi. The dubious mission that Ozu told him to accomplish ends up badly when he starts to think how things could have been different if he had a different circle of friends.
Then again, the time rewinds and our MC starts new, like a freshman. This time he wants to join a different circle. Just what is this series of twirling timelines? Indeed, you have to face the consequences of your decision.
