Appearance

Ost Horai is a true Chinese beauty. She had shiny long brown hair that she tied in a perfectly made chignon while her eyes were honey brown, and her skin was smooth and bright. She wears tight traditional Chinese dresses that reveal her body shape.
Naofumi also once said that she looks “vivacious” which means that she is very lively and energetic.
Personality

Ost Horai is a kindhearted woman, maybe even a bit too much. Far from being selfish, she never takes her own sake into consideration when making decisions. She always put her life on the line in order to protect the ones she cherishes.
After she temporarily joined Naofumi’s party, she started to wish that she could have lived a mundane human life. She thought that she would have loved to travel and spend time with Naofumi and his group as one of their allies.
However, she didn’t let those thoughts cloud her judgment as to when the time came to end Kyo, she didn’t hesitate a second before killing him thus killing herself as well.
When she was tasked to harvest souls for the Spirit Tortoise, Ost Horai would make a man in a high position of power fall in love and make them start wars with other countries (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 2 Episode 2).

Although she wasn’t thrilled about it, she believed that she was doing so for the greater good of this world.
If the number of souls aren’t enough, she would send the other Spirit Tortoise familiars to speed things up. And if it’s still insufficient, she would unseal the Spirit Tortoise itself so it can trample entire villages, and harvest a huge quantity of souls in the least amount of time.
When needed, Ost Horai proved herself to be a despicable manipulator that won’t hesitate to use the cruelest of methods to fulfill her mission (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 2 Episode 2).

However, when Kyo took her place, that side of her completely disappeared. We then understood that: that wasn’t her true self, and that only kindness exists inside her pure heart.
She accepted and worked on her mission faithfully, but she was terrified of one thing. Her role forced her to turn into a villain. When her identity is revealed, she will undoubtedly be hated by the whole world.
Thus, she was meant to die despised and alone while her true intentions were good. Hence, she was overjoyed when Naofumi accepted her and became part of his group where she made friends and allies.
Powers and Abilities
Ost Horai mainly uses earth and support magic. She can also use an old form of magic, a type of magic that has been forgotten nowadays. Another thing is that she is adept in gravity magic.
Because she is the soul of her master, she has the ability to stop other familiars in their tracks and absorb their energy to fuel her own.
When she is inside the Spirit Tortoise, her healing ability is greatly intensified. Fatal wounds are as easy to heal as puny scratches.
The only thing she can’t do is control the body of the Spirit Tortoise since its consciousness is more powerful than hers.

Relationships

Naofumi Iwatani
(Shield Hero)
Ost Horai believes that Naofumi is the only competent Hero among the four who were summoned. When she needed a reliable ally to kill her, she went to him seeking help.
When she started traveling with him and his group she gave him many valuable gifts. She told him about the existence of Liberation-class magic and that there is a way to travel from one world to another.
He was deeply touched when he saw her sacrifice herself for the world and declared that if he finds a way to bring her back, he will immediately do so.

Mirellia Q. Melromarc
Mirellia, the Queen of Melromarc was already acquainted with Ost Horai before the sudden awakening of the Spirit Tortoise. She met her at a previous World Conference.
At the time, she was using one of the kings who were attending the meeting so Mirellia, who realized what she was doing, was very wary of her.
However, when Ost Horai proved with her actions that all she wanted was to keep this word safe, she began to cooperate with her and they managed to efficiently work together as a team.
Plot

The Waves of Calamity are phenomena that unleash waves of endless monsters upon the world.
The legend says that Four Cardinal Heroes are to be summoned from another world and that they will be the ones to save it—if they are up to the task, of course.
With no other choice than to rely on outside powers, the King of Melromarc ordered his mages to start the summoning ritual.
The ritual was successful and four teenagers coming from different versions of modern Japan appeared before them.
The first Hero, the Spear Hero was called Motoyasu Kitamura, the second Hero, the Sword Hero is Ren Amaki, the third Hero is known as Itsuki Kawasumi and finally, the Shield Hero, if he can be considered a hero, was none other than Naofumi Iwatani (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).

The gentle and kind Naofumi had all the intentions of helping the poor people of this world, however, the people didn’t return his kindness.
The Shield Hero was considered a useless hero and was severely discriminated against. So when the time came to form a party, no one desired to die under the command of a hero who couldn’t fight.
Unexpectedly, Malty S. Melromarc or Myne, the first Princess of Melromarc, volunteered to accompany the Shield Hero.
With a beautiful and kind Princess now at his side, things were looking a bit too good for Naofumi.

But eventually, the Princess revealed her true colors. An evil Akuma was hiding behind an angelic smile and completely fooled the poor Naofumi.
She stole all his belongings and accused him in front of her entire country of taking advantage of her, a false statement that everybody believed—even his so-called comrades (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).
Now traumatized, Naofumi changed. His smile left his face and he was left with a scar that made him wary of anybody that would approach him. He became cold and cruel and had no desire to help this world anymore.
He wanted to go back home, however the only way to do so is to stop the Waves. He left the royal palace, purchased a slave, Raphtalia, so she can become his sword, and set out on a journey to save this despicable world (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).
Chronology

In this volume, she made a very brief apparition. She appeared before Naofumi, the Shield Hero, and his party. Her face was hidden underneath a cape. She asked the Hero to kill her before she started rampaging and then disappeared.
With no understanding of the situation, Naofumi who was on his way to see the Queen of Melromarc about the Spirit Tortoise incident, decided to ignore that encounter.

Naofumi thought that he managed to defeat the Spirit Tortoise once and for all. However, Ost Horai regains a permanent human form and warns him that he will surely revive again.
Thus, Naofumi takes her to meet the Queen and her allies so Horai can share all the information she has with the troops so that they prepare themselves for another battle.
Fitoria then arrives and joins the fight. Horai went back inside the Spirit Tortoise and the two groups managed to smash the head as well as the heart of the beast simultaneously, killing it for good this time around.
When they were investigating the body of the Spirit Tortoise, they found out that Kyo was the cause of its early awakening. Dwelling in his core, he was stealing all the energy the beast was collecting.

Thus, a battle between the Shield Hero’s party and Kyo began. They were going to be defeated when Ost asked Naofumi to use the Spirit Tortoise Shield that he unlocked with her help and overthrow Kyo while destroying the core of the beast at the same time.
Kyo escaped to another world thanks to the energy he stored from the Spirit Tortoise while Ost Horai is about to lose her life.
Her last request to the Shield Hero was to reclaim what Kyo had stolen. In order to do so, she uses her authority so Naofumi can freely travel between worlds. She says her tearful last goodbyes as she draws her last breath.

Takt fatally wounded Naofumi. With the Heroes in a near-death stage, he connects with the spirit of his Shield, however, the ones who were communicating with him were Ost Horai and Atla.
First, they tell him to beware of the “World Eater“, the being responsible for the Waves. Then, they tell him that they can take him back to his original world, however, Naofumi decided to stay in this one.
The conversation goes on and Ost Horai reveals that there is a way to bring her back but adds that it’s not really necessary because she is happy inside his Shield.
He wakes up and now has the ability to freely talk to the two girls through the green gem on the Shield.
