Introduction
Filo is one of the three main protagonists of The Rising of the Shield Hero. When she first debuted in the series, like all the other encounters Naofumi had after the incident with Malty, he didn’t trust Filo immediately (The Rising of the shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 5).
Although she has the mentality of a child and is unable to lie or hide her emotions, she had to work very hard in order to make Naofumi see her as a comrade he can entrust his back to.

Online, the opinions about her are contradicting each other. On one hand, a lot of fans find her irritating due to her annoying personality while others love her for how adorable she looks and acts.
No matter the fan’s thoughts about her, the fact remains that she is a vital character in the series as she was part of the process of “softening Naofumi” so he can go back to being his former self.

When she was born, the little cute pinkish bird looked exactly like a baby chick. After just one day, she grew a bit and had the size of a tennis ball. On the third day, she already had the size of a normal Filolial, and on the fourth, she was so humongous that she could already be ridden (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 5).
During a race against Motoyasu and his Dragon, she grew even more, she was way larger than the everyday Filolial. People also started saying that she was fat and her once pink feather turned white (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 5).
Human form:
In her human form, Filo is the most adorable little thing in the world. She has beautiful long blonde hair, her eyes are of a deep turquoise blue, her skin is white, and she is about 1.3 meters or 130cm tall.
What’s special about her human appearance is that she has on her back a pair of magnificent white wings. She looks like a stunning little angel.
Her dress is made of special threads that spread when she transforms without tearing. The dress is white and she wears a blue bow with it (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 6).
When she became Fitoria’s official successor, she got a cowlick sticking out of her head. It’s the symbol of the Queen and a way to telepathically communicate with Fitoria. It works just like an antenna (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 17).
Personality
Before she was able to turn into a human, Filo acted like a normal animal. She ate like a pig, stuck to Naofumi like glue, and always requested his affection.
When she acquired the ability to turn into a human, she acted like a spoiled brat. She wouldn’t do a thing without getting food first and would throw tantrums if her master didn’t sleep in bed with her.
It was also hilarious when she would randomly transform into a bird in the most inappropriate situations.
Naofumi managed to get her to calm her down by threatening to sell her if she didn’t properly behave from now on.
After that, she started to work extremely hard to get his recognition and to be sure she will never be thrown away by her beloved master.
Filo is also very caring and affectionate. It’s mostly obvious when you see her interacting with Melty, the second Princess of Melromarc, the future Queen, and her best friend.
Compared to other Filolials, Filo is quite smart. Compared to normal humans, she is airheaded and has a very short attention span.
Filo also loves to swim. She can stay underwater for hours if she wants to. And she even likes to collect shining objects that she considers her treasures.
Every time she visits a tavern, she would listen to the people singing and memorize the songs. She goes to play with children whenever she has the chance.
She’s a glutton with no table manners whatsoever. She finds rotten flesh good enough to be eaten and also has a cannibalistic side as she once said that Filolials look delicious.
Naofumi uses that side of her to terrify his enemies as he threatens them to feed them to her. It’s an act that Filo enjoys and participates in.
Filo has special nicknames for all the new people that she meets. She refers to the three other Heroes by the weapon they hold, she calls Eclair Seaetto, Red Veggie, Ost is Turtle lady, Therese’s nickname is sparkle person and Kizuna is fishing lady.
She’s an extremely good judge of character, she can grasp people’s personalities after exchanging just a few words with them. It’s like she can see through their masks and lies.
She lives her life following her animal instincts, as she changed quite a bit as she grew older, that’s the only thing that will never fade away.

Filo’s natural strength is scary, she is also extremely fast. She can use magic and is a wind magic-user. She learned the Hengen Musou fighting style and her battle experience is amazing since she was thrown on the battlefield the moment she was born.
She used to fight in her Filolial form, however, after her duel with Fitoria, she advised her to learn how to control her full power in human form which she did and powered up drastically.
Naofumi describes her as a genius when it comes to learning and memorizing magic spells or learning new languages. She’s also able to learn new techniques just by watching people perform them once.

Naofumi Iwatani
(Shield Hero)
Much more than just her master, Naofumi is like a father to Filo. She’s the second person the Shield Hero accepted as a comrade and I believe the person he spoils the most.
No matter how extreme or cruel his actions may be, she follows him without ever questioning him.
They both share the same disdain towards Motoyasu and always have the best laugh ever when she ends up kicking him in his sensitive area.
Motoyasu Kitamura
(Spear Hero)
Annoying as hell, naïve, and a simpleton, he is in love with Filo when she is in her human form and hates her when she reverts back to an animal.
The hate is mutual since Filo can’t stand the guy and runs away the second she sees his face. She disgusts him especially when he tries to hug her.
Raphtalia
(Katana Hero)
Raphtalia didn’t have any kind of feelings toward Filo when she was born. She only started to become very jealous of her when she saw that she was getting more attention than her from Naofumi.
Filo took on the challenge as she declared that she won’t let her have her master and the little brat that she is would often interrupt their “moment” out of spite.
However, after sharing an intense adventure together where they had to rely on each other, they grew closer (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 7).
Fitoria
(Filolial Queen & Carriage Hero)
The current and future Filolial Queens didn’t have the best first encounter. Fitoria wanted to test Filo to see if she was worthy as her replacement.
They had a duel. Fitoria was undeniably way over Filo’s league, however, over the course of the battle, Filo showed unwavering determination and resolve, she evolved and managed to scratch the overpowered Queen.
She won her respect and her approval, and Fitoria officially made Filo her successor (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 17).
Rishia Ivyred
(Projectile Hero)
Rishia was originally in the Bow Hero’s party. She was kicked out because she was accused of a crime she didn’t commit and also because she was considered weak.
She then joined Naofumi’s group and became Filo’s Nakama.
Melty Q. Melromarc
Melty is Filo’s best friend. Melty is obsessed with Filolials and falls in love with Filo the second they meet.
Their energies match perfectly and they form a perfect duo. Although Naofumi didn’t trust Melty at first, Filo immediately knew that she was a reliable person with no ill intent and defended her when she was being bad-mouthed.
Ratotille Anthreya
She’s a doctor in Naofumi’s domain and would often check up on Filo to make sure she is in perfect health.
Wyndia
She’s Ratotille’s assistant and the one who raised Gaelion, Filo’s rival.
Gaelion
He’s also one of Naofumi’s pets so the two of them would often fight for his affection. He’s a Dragon and Filolials absolutely detests them, it’s an instinctive feeling that makes Filo’s blood boil.
Demon Dragon Emperor
She almost killed Filo once and would often flirt with Naofumi, an act that would enrage Filo.
She tries to protect her master from her but the Emperor only sees her as a bug that can be ignored.
Plot
In another world, a world where magic and monsters are common things, a country was in grave danger. That country was called Melromarc.
Waves of Catastrophe were devastating the land, destroying villages, and killing the people. The legend said that the only way to stop the calamity was to summon the Four Cardinal Heroes. With no other choice, they began the ritual.
Motoyasu Kitamura became the Spear Hero, Ren Amaki took the role of the Sword Hero, Itsuki Kawasumi turned into the Bow Hero, and lastly, Naofumi Iwatani endorsed the name of the Shield Hero (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).
Naofumi was a geek obsessed with video games and was thrilled to find himself in a game-like environment. In the end, it’s the dream of all hard-core gamers that was becoming a reality for him.
Little did he know that the Shield Hero was discriminated against in that country since they deemed him worthless for having no combat abilities.
No one wanted to party with him until the mesmerizing first Princess of Melromarc, Malty, offered to become his companion.
Overjoyed, they started to travel with each other until the true face of the manipulative Princess surfaced.
She only saw Naofumi as a super easy prey, which he was. She took all his money and accused him of taking advantage of her (The Rising of the Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).
Now, not only was he looked down upon, but he was also hated by all the people in Melromarc for a crime he didn’t commit.
Deeply shocked by the events, Naofumi’s personality changed drastically. He is not the kind and naïve person he once was, he turned into a cold and cruel individual who is unable to put his trust in anyone.
He left the royal palace and decided to fight the Waves on his own, however, he still needed an ally that would become his weapon.
Thus, he decided to buy a slave. That slave happened to be Raphtalia and later on, he also purchased an egg from the same slave trader, and from that egg emerged Filo (The Rising of The Shield Hero Anime: Season 1 Episode 1).
