The Summer Season of 2020 was a hit for a lot of successful anime. We had anime like Re: ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2, Great Pretender, Fire Force Season 2, SOA Alicization War of Underworld Part 2, and many more. But to our concern, Rent A Girlfriend was the most hyped and attractive anime of Summer 2020.
Both the anime and manga were successful. As more than 830,000 copies of the manga were sold by March 2021, the show stayed in top 10 most-watched in China and many countries in the Southeast Asian region. Welp, it deserves to be a hit since the animation quality, soundtracks, and mainly the story was amazing with very well-managed character developments.

But we should be discussing the main thing about the show, the actual release date of the second season. After a lot of conspiracies of fans, YouTubers, and click baiters, we finally found out some official news. But before going into the main discussion, there are a few things for the new watchers or non-watchers that need to know.

Rent A Girlfriend Season 2: Release Date 2022
Plot

The story of season 1 is based on the love life of Kazuya Kinoshita, a college student. The idea was to bring out the information about renting a person for dates in the cultures of Japan. In Japan, you can hire a person’s company. The protagonist of the show does the same thing; following the incident of being dumped by his month-long girlfriend he then hires a date online.
The person Kazuya hires, Chizuru Mizuhara, turns out to be his neighbour. And as it’s an odd job, she tries to hide her identity to protect the honor of her family. She puts her personal life and job life in two different closets and won’t let them mix.
As Kazuya was desperate to find love, he fell in love with Chizuru. But Chizuru’s own policy was not to get involved with her customers. This brings forth some new characters in the show. Ruka Sarashina, Sumi Sakurasawa, and Mini Yaemori. Kazuya gets involved with each one of them, turning the show into a really confusing romance.
Release Date

The first announcement of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” season 2 was back in September 2020. The official site of the show stated that there will be a second season of the show initially. But later, they delayed the release date of July 2022. Still, the exact date of the release is still not known.
The fans were expecting the release date to be within 2021 after the first delay. It is rumoured that if it wasn’t for COVID-19, the show would be released within 2021. Even though the release date met with an unfortunate delay, the fans are still eagerly waiting for season 2.
Predicted Cast

It is safe to say, the cast of season 1 will be repeated in the second season. In a special short video of the show, we got to know that some of the casts from season 1 were featured. Since there’s still no official news that there will be new voice actors to play the characters, it would be wise to expect the cast of season 1.
So, we will again see Yukari Nozawa will voice Kazuya’s grandma, Nagomi Kinoshita, Nao Toyama will voice Ruka Sarashina, Aoi Yuki will voice Mami Nanami, Shun Horie will voice Kazuya Kinoshita, Rie Takahashi will voice Sumi Sakurasawa, and Sora Amamiya will voice Chizuru Mizuhara.
But still, maybe they are keeping a surprise for us and revealing new characters as the season starts. But from the story we learned so far, the chance of that happening is very slim. Saying that we still can’t completely throw away the chance of this occurring.
Main Cast

Chizuru Mizuhara - Sora Amamiya

Chizuru is the main female character of the show. She is a college student, living a secret double life as a “rental girlfriend”. On top of that, she is the neighbour of the protagonist Kazuya Kinoshita. Some people watch the show just for her. She has a huge fan base—bigger than the male protagonist.
I’d say the male protagonist needs more character development to even fit or cope with her. With that being said, I don’t want anyone to think that the male protagonist is plainly bad, it’s just that the male protagonist needs to realize what he wants and how much effort he needs to put in to get it.
Before expressing too much, I think you guys understand, she is one of the important characters of the show. And her character is played by Sora Amamiya, a singer and voice actress from Japan. She also voiced characters like Elizabeth Liones and Touka Kirishima from The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement and Tokyo Ghoul: Re respectively.
She debuted in voice acting in 2011 and became the winner of Best New Actress during the 9th Seiyuu Award in March 2015. She is also expected to be performing as the same character in season two of Rent-a-Girlfriend.
Mami Nanami - Aoi Yuki

The story of Mami Nanami shows us that she is the antagonist of the show. But she doesn’t get that much exposure during season one. She is a freshman of the same university as the protagonist. The more important recognition of her is that she’s the ex-girlfriend of Kazuya Kinoshita. It is expected that we might get some insight about her in season two.
The voice actress of Mami Nanami was played by Aoi Yuki. Aoi Yuki is her stage name and her real name is Aoi Yabusaki. She is not just a voice actress, she also acts and sings. Other than playing as Mami Nanami, she played the character of Tsuyu Asui from Boku no Hero Academia the Movie 3: World Heroes’ Mission. Mizuho from Sunny Boy, Diane from Nanatsu no Taizai Movie 2: Hikari ni Norowareshi Mono-Tachi is also her work.
Ruka Sarashina - Nao Toyama

Ruka is one of my personal favorite characters but in the show, she plays her role almost like that of an antagonist. Even though she was presented as an antagonist at first, she turned out to be a supporting character. She has a medical condition. Her heart beats slower than a regular healthy person’s heart would beat.
Ruka was voiced by Nao Toyama. Nao Toyama is a voice actress and singer and she debuted in the industry back in 2010. Other than voicing anime characters, Ruka is also connected with an agency called Intention. Other than voicing Ruka, she also voiced characters like, Rin Shima from Yuru Camp△, Yui Yuigahama from My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected.
Sumi Sakurasawa - Rie Takahashi

She is one of the most interesting characters in the show. Sumi is the second most important character in the show, on top of that, she is cute as hell. She is a first-year student of the same university as Kazuya. She also works as a rental girlfriend with Chizuru Mizuhara’s company. I have all the right to brag about her cuz she got her own spin-off, where she is the protagonist, called Rent-A-(Really Shy!)-Girlfriend.
The character Sumi Sakurasawa was voiced by the famous Rie Takahashi. She is a Japanese voice actress connected with 81 Produce. She is well known for her work as the main character in the anime Seiyuu’s Life! She also voiced characters like Takagi from Teasing Master Takagi-san, Megumin from KonoSuba, Emilia from Re: Zero.
Kazuya Kinoshita - Shun Horie

Kazuya Kinoshita is the protagonist of the show. He is a college student at Nerima University. He lives alone in his apartment. He is twenty years old. His indecisiveness made him suffer a lot here and there. He lies for no reason at times and this puts him into trouble often. But even though he is a coward, indecisive, and lies often, he is a man with a good heart.
Shun Horie is a Japanese voice actor. He won the Best New Actor in the 12th Seiyuu Award. He is also related to Pro-Fit and SparQlew. Other than Kazuya’s voice, Shun Horie worked in a lot of other series. Some of his works that are worth mentioning are: Ichirou Suzuki from Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, Asta from Black Clover, and many more.
Side Cast
Nagomi Kinoshita - Yukari Nozawa

Nagomi Kinoshita is the Grandmother of Kazuya and the oldest character in the show. She is the head of the Kinoshita family. She is also the owner of the original family liquor store. Her motive from the story so far is to see her grandson in a stable relationship.
Yukari Nozawa is the voice actress or Seiyuu of Nagomi Kinoshita. She has been working with Seinenza Theater. She is more known for creating dubs than anime, but still, she voiced several good anime. Some of the anime worth mentioning are Mrs. Xia from A Spirit of the Sun, and Nancy Wilson from AD Police.
Yoshiaki Kibe - Masayuki Akasaka

Yoshiaki is Kazuya’s childhood friend; he is still a friend and a classmate in their university. Yoshiaki is also a part-time advisor for Kazuya. He advises Kazuya about relationships and love. He is also acquainted with Nagomi Kinoshita and works as a part-timer to help her business.
The voice of Yoshiaki Kibe is from Masayuki Akasaka. He only voiced 8 characters so far. But among those are: Elfo from Disenchantment, Mr. Sato from Aho Girl, and Shiren Tium, Rades Spirito, Gio, Nils Ragus, Rick Cornell, Grey from Black Clover are worth mentioning. He voiced quite a lot of characters from Black Clover.
Shun Kuribayashi - Gakuto Kajiwara

Shun Kuribayashi is one of the minor characters of the show, he is a college friend of Kazuya. He doesn’t talk too much, but he gives his opinion on Kazuya’s girlfriends and he praises their appearances.
Shun was voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara. He is a voice actor working in Osaka Prefecture. He is also involved with Haikyō, a Japanese talent hunting and representative of a group of voice actors. He is famous for voicing other characters from shows like Black Clover (Asta), Fire Force (Shinra Kusakabe), and many more.
Sayuri Ichinose - Sayuri Sadaoka

Sayuri Ichinose is the grandmother of Chizuru Ichinose. She is also the friend of Kazuya’s grandmother, Nagomi Kinoshita. Additionally, she was known as Phoenix when she used to work as a stage actress.
The talent behind her voice is Sayuri Sadaoka, who works for Kanagawa Prefecture. She is also known for voicing Ludia, Queen Victoria from Black Butler, Amane from Another, and many more.
Umi Nakano - Kaito Ishikawa

He is a friend and classmate of Chizuru Ichinose. He goes to the same acting school as Chizuru. He is a minor character but his role as a supporting character is necessary for further plot twists and character developments.
Kaito Ishikawa voiced Umi Nakano in the show from the 8th episode of season 1. He works with Stay Luck for voice acting purposes.
Mini Yaemori - TBA

Mini is a supporting character of the show. She lives near both Chizuru and Kazuya. She is one kind of social media influencer. She streams videos on YouTube, Nicolive, and Twitcasting. She is very optimistic and childish as a character. Even though she’s a supporting character, she already has a solid fanbase. There is a good possibility we will get to know her more in season 2.
The voice actor/actress still hasn’t been decided or announced for Mini yet. But we hope to see someone voicing her in the upcoming season.
Predicted Plot

So far, we’ve already figured out that the story will revolve around Kinoshita Kazuya, a 20-year-old college student. He’s been lying to his family and friends—claiming that his relationship with his rental girlfriend is a real one. On top of that, he is still being fiddled with by his ex-girlfriend.
He is clearly in love with his first rental girlfriend, one of the rental girlfriends has mixed feelings towards him. On top of that, there’s a vibe that yet another rental girlfriend might like him. He might be a coward, at least he is not being bad to the people he knows intentionally.
Now, less about what we already know and more about what we want to find out. The ones who follow the manga already know that what we’ve seen so far is up to volume 6 of the manga. So, the second season has a good chance to start from volume seven.

In a lot of cases, when an anime show is adapted from the original manga, the manga takes on a broader and more detailed plotline. But in the case of Rent-a-Girlfriend, both the manga and anime are almost similar. The main small differences are in dialogues, and some chapters are deleted to fit in the timeframe of each episode. Usually, those chapters never contain any major story.
From the trailer, so far it is possible to say that in this season, we will see a version of the anime where we will get to know more about the female characters. In Particular, we will get to know more about Chizuru. It is expected of Kazuya Kinoshita to get some confidence in himself.
Fans are also expecting some amazing cliffhangers at the end of season 2. To say more specifically, fans are expecting some chemistry between the characters that might indicate the bond between them. Also, as we know what kind of person Kazuya is, we might see him giving up once again because he thinks he is not good enough for Chizuru.
When it comes to Chizuru, she has feelings for Kazuya, but she is the type of person who won’t approach Kazuya by herself. She’s been giving similar vibes to being the tsundere type, but she has her reasons too.
Production
The story of Rent-a-Girlfriend is by Reiji Miyajima. The manga got serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. The animation was animated by TMS Entertainment for both seasons. The director is Kazuomi Koga, the series composer is handled by Mitsutaka Hirota, Kanna Hirayama is the character designer, and Hyadain composed the music of the show.
A band called the “The Peggies”, made the opening of the show called “Centimeter”. Another band called “Halca” created the ending of the show called “Kokuhaku Bungee Jump” from Episodes 2 to 6 and 8 to 11.
Then another ending was introduced by the same band called, “First Drop” for the 7th episode. “Sora Amamiya” is yet another band that performed the third ending called “Kimi wo Tousite” for the season 1 final episode.
We should see different openings and endings for the upcoming season but it is yet not confirmed about the bands, nonetheless the production will be the same. The main cast and staff for season two will be the same in their roles, and Studio Comet will be cooperating in the production.
Studio Comet and TMS Entertainment will be the studio behind “Rent-a-Girlfriend” season two and Kazuomi Koga will be the animation director for the second season. According to Crunchyroll, Kanna Hirayama will be an anime character designer for sure. As they made the graphics for the teaser video of the second season. Ichi Takakuwa will be the director of sound.

That’s all we could gather from all the valid sources we could find about the release date and prediction of plot. I hope the post helps you to somehow be informed about the season 2 of the show, thus it should remind you of some things that happened in season 1 in order to be prepared for season 2.
