Dororo is about a greedy general who promises the 48 demons a piece of his unborn baby. When the baby is finally born, Daigo (the general) throws the child into a river. Hyakkimaru is the main character of Dororo and the baby that was thrown into the river.

Hyakkimaru miraculously survives, and as he grows up, he is determined to take back the pieces of his body that were stolen by all 48 demons. Along the way, he befriends a child named Dororo. The art is pretty old which is why I don’t give it a high rating, but there is an anime adaptation that’s phenomenal in case you don’t vibe with the manga.

Claymore is a manga that follows the journey of Clare. Clare is a Claymore or otherwise known as a half-human and half-Yoma. Clare and her friends are fighting to survive in the series. They battle with Yoma or shapeshifting demons.

The plot is interesting, given that Clare is fighting her own species—even if it’s only half of her.

Although Ginko does not want to become this great swordsman like Musashi, he does want to put his abilities to good use.

Basilisk revolves around a war between two ninja clans that have lasted for centuries. The names of these clans are Iga and Kouga. You know, if time couldn’t stop these two clans from fighting, what can?

Well, that’s when you have the crazy OP warlord named Ieyasu Tokugawa that demands this long war to end. So, guess what? A ceasefire is put in place.

But after a few years, the spark is ignited once again between these two groups. What will stop them? I’m not telling you! But do expect a love scandal to erupt.

Rurouni Kenshin is about a man named Himura Kenshin who is a simple traveler. He is peaceful and minds his own business while wandering about the lands. Here is just one thing people forget to tell you—Himura was a ruthless assassin.

The main characters of Vagabond and Rurouni Kenshin are swordsmen, and they both are historical fiction. The plot is fantastic (in manga obviously), they have complex elements entwined in their respective stories.

11. Bleach

Bleach is definitely in the top three big classics of anime and manga. But do you know the story of Bleach?

Ichigo is not an ordinary high schooler. He can see ghosts. I don’t how he got through it when he was a kid checking under his bed, but he did. One day, Ichigo comes across Rukia Kuchiki who is a Soul Reaper. Due to certain circumstances, as one does, Rukia is forced to transfer her powers to Ichigo. We then follow Ichigo on his new destiny in becoming a Soul Reaper.

10. Gamaran

Gama Kurogane is the mc of Gamaran and the story follows his adventures in competing in the Grand Tournament of Unabara. Gama attends the Ogame school which teaches different fighting styles of kenjutsu.

Like most main characters, Gama wants to be the best swordsman to ever walk the world. That’s tricky because he will face many strong opponents with powerful techniques. The art style is sick too, so I definitely recommend reading this one!

9. The Climber

I’m not at all a social person, so that’s why I can connect with the main character of The Climber. Mori Buntaro is a fellow introvert and is a solo mountain climber. This manga was inspired and based on Buntaro Kato who is an IRL mountain climber.

Although The Climber seems simple, it shows the struggle and pain that people must overcome to quite literally get to the top of the world.

8. Lone Wolf and Cub

Lone Wolf and Cub follows Ogami Itto and his son Daigoro. Ogami was an executioner in the past. But because he was framed for treason against the military dictatorship Shogunate, he decided to leave the Japanese samurai code of honor and follow the path of the demon.

It was either that, death or dishonor.  Not only was he framed, but his entire family including his wife was brutally murdered. The only person that survived his family’s massacre was his son.

We follow Ogami and his trials of being a single father while following down the road to hell.

7. Shamo

Shamo is a dark-themed manga that focuses on Ryou Narushima. Ryou does not live a normal childhood as he was the one that killed both of his parents. Ryou, at the age of 16, was considered a genius ahead of his time. But during that summer of his sweet sixteen, he broke. That’s when he murdered his parents.

It’s hard to make a joke in this list of manga because the aura that each of these series have is extremely heavy. After killing his parents, Ryou becomes a cruel and cold martial artist. Both Musashi Miyamoto and Ryou are seen to be evil by society without even glancing at their redeemable characteristics.

6. Kingdom

Kingdom is about a young slave boy who wants to be the best out of everyone and do the unthinkable- to become a ‘Great General of the Heavens’. You see, the main protagonist, Ri Shin progress towards this ultimate goal of his.

The plot is focused on the unification of China and the horrific wars that come before it. Both Vagabond and Kingdom are historical fiction and they follow their MCs from a young age at the very start. They also show the gruesome reality of wars and violence.

5. Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Shigurui takes place in 1630 in the province of Suruga, Japan at the beginning of the Edo Era. The manga is completed, and it’s recommended for mature audiences, much like the rest of this list.

The plot of Shigurui revolves around the Tokugawa tournament where Shigurui follows the incidents that led up to a certain duel.  The buildup to the match between a blind samurai and a one-armed swordsman is insane.

A fun fact about this manga is that it’s based on the first chapter of Suruga-jo Gozen Jiai written by Norio Nanjo. The more you know!

After the civil war, America was swarmed by immigrants that believed in the American Dream. However, what awaited them was not a life of luxury, but poverty and racism. Most immigrants went to the Five Points in New York City. Five Points is known to be the nastiest slum. Many criminals took control of the Five Points.

Luke Burns is an innocent teen that looks down upon the mobs that fester Five Points. I wonder how he will react when his older brother, Brad Burns is the one holding the reigns of the biggest mob in Five Points. Brad Burns was formerly known to be the Grim Reaper. I’m sure that their dinner conversations are out of this world—specifically in hell.

3. Vinland Saga

Thorfinn is the son of Thors Snorresson. Thors was known to be a merciless warrior that threatened the men of the seas. In my humble opinion, his character is a whole lot better than that comic superhero Thor

Anyway, Thorfinn wants to become a warrior at all costs. When his father, against his will, participates in a war, Thorfinn decides to sneak into his father’s ship.

Unfortunately, Thorfinn’s beloved father is murdered in front of him as a means to protect his son and his crew. Thorfinn is blinded with rage and sets on a lifelong journey to kill his father’s murder.

Blade of the Immortal’s main character is Manji who is a samurai. He is cursed with immortality. Manji stumbles across an orphan named Rin Asano. He vows to her that he will avenge her dead parents, and the series follows them embarking on this journey of revenge.

1. Berserk

The plot of Berserk is set in the medieval European times and it is centered around a dark fantasy realm. The art style is very raw and gory, so I wouldn’t suggest eating your steak dinner while reading the pages.

The main character is named Guts, and he is a highly skilled swordsman.  Guts used to belong to a mercenary group, but in self-defense, he kills his guardian. Guts then joins the group ‘The Band of the Hawk’. This team will then go on to fight their way into the royal court. There are many depressing tones that occur in the events of Berserk, so please don’t expect this to be a light plot.

Conclusion

Which manga are you going to read next?

I apologize since I didn’t crack as many jokes as I normally do. I know my jokes are the best you’ve ever heard, but alas, this list was tough on me. Vagabond isn’t all smiles, in fact, it’s a couple of sobs throughout the story.

If I had to choose the best one, it would have to be the manga ranked at number one. My choice has nothing to do with the art style or action-packed adventures, it would have to only be based on how broken I felt while finishing an updated arc.

Although it takes time until a new Berserk chapter is updated, it is worth it. When I tell you that each one of these manga has made me cry, I’m not lying. Perhaps it’s because I’m a softie, but I don’t think I will see you laughing when certain characters of these series face a fate worse than death. Sometimes, we forget that the characters in these plots have emotions and people that they hold dear to.
