As an unknown virus begins to spread among humans, anyone who gets infected gets turned into zombified creatures called Kabane. Kabanes are unstoppable creatures with almost no way of stopping them aside from destroying their hearts which is their main core.
Ikoma is one of the people who got bitten by a Kabane but fortunately, after he managed to bolt his neck with a metal strap, he was able to stop the infection making him a half-Kabane called a Kabaneri. Aboard the train called Kotetsujou he meets Mumei who is also a fellow Kabaneri and together they thrive to earn the trust of the humans in the train and find a safe area to live in.
