If you’re one of those people who fancy solving crimes, enjoy the art of detective work, and simultaneously engage in all things anime. Then I’ve got news for you, my dear readers!! Today, I’m going to take you to a recommended list of 36 BEST detective anime to watch. 

You may find some familiar titles on the list and you may pick up some new favorites! Though most of the series here will leave us scratching our heads, you may also find a few characters to worship with their god-tier intellects and top-tier looks. The police are struggling to handle the commotion and a detective named Kenjirou Shibazaki was thrown into the chaos with no leads.

Once he came to, he found himself in a dingy old classroom. After exploring around, he finds himself in the presence of other students and the school’s principal, Monukuma, a robotic teddy bear. Monokuma informs them that the freshmen are trapped inside the school and the only way out is to kill a classmate without being found out. Tension rises as everyone’s moral compass is put to the test.

In feudal Japan, a “Medicine Seller” travels around the land in search of spirits that he can exorcise. His methods, however, are a bit eccentric as it takes a psychological and philosophical approach laced with a detective touch. Basically, when he encounters a ‘Mononoke’ he has to learn its Form, Truth, and Reason so he can wield his Exorcism Sword and kill it. 

He starts his investigation thoroughly. As he is led to an old-fashioned inn, where he encounters a Zashiki Warashi who are notorious for their killings. This time, their target is the pregnant lady, named Shiro. With the Medicine Seller present, he starts his investigation to uncover the Form, the Truth, and Reason in order to slay the Zashiki Warashi.

Here, she meets Teiichi Niiya who can see her paranormal form. As the two grew close, the pair and the rest of his friends decide to dive deeper into the lore and mysteries of the school. While doing so, they might have a strong chance of discovering the truth about Yuuko’s death.

Considering these conditions, Hugh took the responsibility for the house and the girl. Suddenly an old rival of his grandfather shows up out of the blue. Dalian accompanies the young Lord to meet their guest, hiding the fact that she’s aware of the killer’s identity. Following the events next, the pair find that the murderer possesses the Phantom Book. With their combined efforts, they sealed the book away and vow to solve the mysteries caused by the very book they sealed.

Though much has changed ten years later, we follow Juugo Yama who’s been exiled by his family. Hoping to chase his dreams on the island, he ends up being chased by Nanana’s ghost.

Juugo befriends Nanana and discovers that just before she died, she hid items that possess unique and mysterious powers across Nanae Island. Juugo and the help of the self-proclaimed detective, Tensai Ikkyuu, and the cross-dressing mad Daruko Hoshino, are set on an adventure for the treasure.

These murder victims share one common trait, they are all Minimum Holders. Their police officer friend is also connected to the case as he is on the hunt for this serial killer. But what exactly is the link? And why does it link to Nice?

For some lighthearted and comedic detective work, Cuticle Detective Inaba is set in a world where half-human creatures coexist with humans. Everything is peaceful and equal—well not entirely peaceful as crooks are here and there, essentially like humans, the half-human half-chimera people also have a few bad apples. Thus, the need for our lone wolf detective! 

Inaba is half-wolf and has a cool ability—he’s able to get enough information from examining or by tasting a hair sample. Cool right? Well… it is, just disregard his hair fetish okay? Oh, and if that’s strange then you’ll find his arch-nemesis stranger. Don Valentino, a half-goat crime boss, has an insatiable appetite for the green legal tenders—which is money by the way. His crimes include making counterfeit bills while enjoying the real dough. Will our wolfy detective be able to catch the goat and be rid of his baaaad ways? 

 

22. Beautiful Bones

All things normal ceased once Shoutarou Tatewaki encountered Sakurako Kujou. Initially, he thought that Sakurako was responsible for the missing persons around the neighborhood, but his impression changes when he sees her true talents. 

Sakurako is able to take quite a lot of information from analyzing bone specimens. With an eccentric osteologist on one hand and a curious boy on the other, the pair tries to solve mysteries through bones. I tell you, there will be a lot since the number of incidents is being reported. The bones aren’t done telling their stories yet.

You know how baseball is a fun sport? With the saying, “—and the crowd goes wild!” Yeaaah well, the crowd is going wild for a notorious boy who is skating around on rollerblades and beating people up with a golden baseball bat. 

The very first victim of this infamous Shounen Bat is a famous character designer, Tsukiko Sagi but no one’s buying it. They think that Tsukiko is the one behind this and all she can do is just take on all the heat. News of the assailant is spreading across the city, leaving the residents in a state of paranoia. Two skilled detectives are called in to catch the Shounen Bat, the question remains whether they will be successful in catching him, or will the paranoia get to them first?

Ghost stories are only neat when they’re just stories. I guess that’s why Taniyama Mai and her friends like to share ghost stories, one, in particular, was about an abandoned school building inside their campus. Tons of ghost stories are centered around it—until their whispers were interrupted by Shibuya Kazuya. 

His presence in the school could only mean one thing…these ghost stories are no longer myths. The principal has asked him to investigate the stories that are associated with the abandoned school building. The following day, Mai was curious about the building and noticed some activity in it. Here… she makes a few mistakes that caused Kazuya’s assistant to get injured and her own punishment for joining the crew.

Things pick up fast when a young woman was run over by a train. Kanako survives the ordeal but is left in critical condition. She is left in the care of Youko, she entrusts Dr. Koushiroi Mimasaka to a clinic in the forest. Here, she will be receiving experimental treatment–to ensure her healthy recovery. Well… at least that’s what they thought 

When Kiba and Youko return to visit Kanako, they are left with a surprise. Kanako and the doctor was nowhere to be found and what’s worse—the severed limbs of young girls in boxes Time is not on their side as they begin their investigation to catch the murderer and save Kanako.

He is anything but a regular assistant as the secret lies with him. He is actually a demon who is behind all the crime-solving success. He came to the human world in search of—well some challenge since he’s solved all the cases in the demon realm. Now looking for fun, he goes to the human world where Yako is his proxy. Now, their journey begins with a little give and take.

Despite the pairs’ opposite personalities, both characters have much to learn from each other. Seeing that Daisuki can come off as arrogant at times and Haru is reckless as ever, the two must combine their efforts to solve the seemingly unsolvable mysteries.

 

13. ID: Invaded

If Psycho-Pass has the Sibyl System, ID:Invaded has the Mizuhanome System where it allows people to enter the most outrageous place ever—our human minds. This changes how investigations since the specialized police squad Kura can conjure the criminal’s unconscious mind. Through this, they can do their job to explore the psychological plane and find out the culprit’s identity.  

But, not anyone can enter the id wells, one requirement for you to enter is to kill someone yourself. Our MC, detective Akihito Narihisago has that prerequisite and is well known inside the id wells. However, his job with the police force was halted and soon enough, he’s on the other end of the law. Regardless, he helps Kura in confinement as his detective skills can still help investigations. However, the truth is slowly seeping out and Narihisago is going to find it.

12. Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok

10. Steins; Gate

Rintarou Okabe is a mad scientist whose thirst for science is never-ending. Along with his friends, Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hoshida, they end up discovering time travel through a microwave and a cellphone. Well, before that grand discovery, the microwave started turning bananas into green goop. Everybody’s invention gotta start somewhere right?

Anyway, their invention is some sort of time travel as the “Phone Microwave” can send text messages to the past when using the microwave. Soon after they worked on their discovery, some organization was bound to confiscate their work. So the mysterious organization SERN has research on time travel and claims that they’re here to undo what Okabe has done.

 

9. B: The Beginning

This unit is led by talented Daisuki Aramki and Motoko Kusanagi, the pair deals with all sorts of crimes in the social spectrum. But, a new enemy rises that causes to cat and mouse game between the police and “The Laughing Man.”

A classic coming into our midst, it’s no secret that this series still is one of the best detective anime series. We follow Shinichi Kuduo who is very talented in his detective work. However, due to certain circumstances with a case, he got dosed with an experimental drug that somehow de-aged him. He finds himself in the body of a seven-year-old child. 

Though his body may look like a child’s, his intellect is quite intact. He decides to hide his identity and helps out the senior Mouri solve cases from the background. He gets quite creative with his sleuthing and is also on the mission to hunt down the organization that created the drug, hoping to reverse the effects. 

 

4. Death Note

Now, there’s been talk about demons and humans working together to solve mysteries *ahem* Black Butler *ahem*, however for this one… the pair are on a killing spree. For whatever reason, Ryuk drops his ‘Death Note,’ into the human realm. This shinigami is bored and by using his ‘Death Note,’ he stumbles upon Light Yagami, a very intelligent young man.

Despite being different beings, they both share one belief: that their worlds are rotten. With the shinigami’s weapon at the hands of a human, the balance tips. A taste of murder for Light has twisted his sense of justice. His goal is to rid the world of all evil-doers but the sudden rise of deaths has led to the government relying on L, a meticulous detective. 

 

3. Gosick

One day, Kujou visits the prestigious school’s library and there he meets a girl whose beauty resembles that of a doll. He soon finds out this girl has a strange ability that can predict the future, Victorique de Blois has some foresight and uses her gifts to solve mysteries.

A passionate man who is said to be called the “Last Great Detective” or sometimes, “Defeated Detective,” is talented at what he does. Well… at least, that’s what Shinjuurou Tuuki thinks his partner is doing. Little is known about his partner Inga, yet they managed to form some bond that Shinjuurou will protect him no matter what. But, what exactly is Inga hiding and who is he exactly?

Things are quite different in Japan at the age of the 22nd century. The Sibyl System is responsible for determining the mental state of its citizens whether they are showing symptoms of criminal intent, or their Psycho-Pass. If found with latent criminal symptoms, the Inspectors do their duty by subjugating their target, sometimes killing them if their Psycho-Pass is too high. 

Alongside them are Enforcers, these are inspectors who became latent criminals. However, they are granted their freedom given that they provide help to their Inspectors. This was the job of Akane Tsunemori, she came into this part of the world to uphold justice and go by the books. But her work goes beyond that as she is subjected to just how easy it can be to become a latent criminal. 

 

Conclusion
