A tragic event occurs as a monster called Angel begins to attack the city and Gendou then explains the real reason why he brought back his son to Tokyo-3. That is to pilot EVA-01. Gendou believes that only his son has the capabilities to pilot the unit because of his compatibility to his biometrics.

This is the show where the meme “Get in the robot, Shinji!” originated from. The context being Shinji becoming more hesitant to pilot the unit as it gives him immense psychological trauma.
