When you are making a list about action anime, it’s very common to see a list filled with all Shonen anime. It’s very hard to leave our Shonen anime when making a list like this. So, this is me making a list about action anime, leaving out the big three.
What makes a good action anime? In my eyes, it should have the buildup to the big fight, it should have amazing fighting animation (though some features here have mediocre animation quality, they deserve their spot), and it should have proper character development. With these three features kept in mind, here are 26 action anime you should watch.

Kemono Jihen is known as one of the dark horses of 2021 anime. This anime absolutely surprised everyone when it aired with its out-of-the-ordinary action scenes and supernatural genre. The story is well choreographed and almost everyone gets their back story told in only one season. I know, even I didn’t think it was possible. The show still has places it can grow but overall, it’s a banger.
Our MCs are Kabane (the kid who doesn’t get emotions like a US military soldier), Akira (the cross-dressing oni-chan lover), and Shiki (the low-budget Sasuke). With the three of them combined, they will solve supernatural mysteries and save the world (not really).

Many might argue why I put Cowboy Bebop at such a low position, it’s because Cowboy Bebop was aired in 1998, and animation back then was very clunky. That’s the only reason Cowboy Bebop is in this position. Cowboy Bebop has almost everything that you wish for in an action anime.
The premise goes like this. The year is 2071 and earth is a baron wasteland. Humans have left earth and started living in space and other planets. During this period, space crime and bounty hunters seem to be growing in numbers.
Among these are our MCs, Spike, Faye, Edward, Jet, and Ein. The show contains each episode showing different bounty hunting missions and at the end of the season, we get a slight backstory reveal about Spike, Faye, and Jet. The show is a must-watch as it is an old-school classic.

If you ever let Michael Bay direct an anime, then the result might be similar to Black Lagoon. The show is filled with gunshots and explosions and absolutely amazing action scenes. The animation works, there is a story that works, though there is low comedy there are enough explosions to make up for it.
Our protagonist, Rokurou, who is a delivery man, is going on a trip to Southeast Asia. On his way, he gets kidnapped by a group called Black Lagoon. He was supposed to be used as a bargaining chip but when it failed, Black Lagoon just let him go, and salty as I may be, Rokurou also got betrayed by his employer. Entering as an absolute meme of a show that trolls every Shonen anime whenever it gets the chance, with a premise that just should not work but it does, One Punch Man.
Our MC, Saitama, seems to be an ordinary human with nothing that makes him look like a protagonist, yet he is so overpowered that anything he punches, gets destroyed in one punch.
You might ask me; doesn’t that sound boring? In theory, it does, but when you see One Punch Man and look at the buildup to a big fight and then Saitama appears out of nowhere and one punches it, you just can not but laugh a little.
The show has clever jokes working for it and the supporting characters have very well drawn and choreographed fights that make this show worth it. Not going to lie, The King Engine seems to me like the best bait power ever created.

Back to a classic show, Soul Eater is something we old-school anime watchers grew up watching. It attracted us with its unique art style, the animation, the funny jokes, and the all in all amazing action.
The show introduces us to Shinigami school that intends to raise potential Shinigami and Death Scythes for the future. Our main protagonists, Maka and Evans are partners as in Shinigami and Scythe.
Both of them have the same goal yet, they seem to stumble on as their mindset does not match. The show teaches us how to work as a team and how teamwork can solve even the most difficult problems. The show also has Black Star and Death the Kid as comic relief at times. Overall, a classic show.

Did you ever wonder what a show might look like if an expert animator drew it on MS paint? Kill la Kill feels like that but then you forgive it, because of an absolute masterpiece of a show it is.
The story starts with us knowing the fact that someone murdered our protagonist, Ryuuko’s father and now Ryuuko is wandering in search of his father’s killer. She only has one clue, the weapon left by the murderer which is a half scissor blade.
She felt clueless until she arrived at Honnouji Academy and found out Satsuki, her rival in the show, is also using a scissor blade. The wholes show circles around the plot that did Satsuki murder, Ryuuko’s father. The action scenes in this show are on the same level as Mob Psycho 100. This is a must-watch show. Oh, I didn’t peak your attention? How about this, the characters in this show wear talking bikinis as armor and fight. Go and watch the show.

This year has been the year for boxing and I see this as the best time to promote boxing anime. Fighting Spirit or otherwise known as Hajime no Ippo is the story of a high school kid Ippo, who was being bullied until he joined the boxing gym and started his journey to becoming Japan’s lightweight boxing champion.
The show has jaw-dropping action, drama, occasional comic relief, and two badass boxers, Mamoru and Ippo. I see this show as an inspiration that anyone can change his life around if they put the work into it.
Some of the fights in the show are so close that the viewer can never guess who might win. Also, forget about thinking the MC is always going to win. Not here, This show literally makes us wonder who is going to win.

But as she works with Shinya, she finds out that the so far claimed personality guns are flawed in many ways and this system itself is filled with flaws.

Here is another futuristic sci-fi show, Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song. Idol, sci-fi, action, Vivy is a mixture of all three genres and this show has sneaked its way into 2021 and nobody even noticed.
Because of a bad marketing strategy, Vivy is somewhat of an underrated show that nobody watched. The show’s premise goes like this: the world in the future is at war and a scientist sends an AI robot to the past to prevent wars from occurring for hundreds of years and to enrich people’s hearts with love and joy with her voice.
The show has some of the best visuals and a very catchy opening and ending song. I’m sure you are sleeping on this show. Try it, you won’t regret it.

Years later Afro gains the chance to challenge his father’s murderer. The only problem is, everyone else stands in his way and Afro was not going to take it. He will slash down anyone who comes between him and his revenge. It is an absolutely amazing show with mind-boggling fight choreography.

Tokyo revengers came this year and took social media by storm. I know it’s the hype train, but to me, Tokyo Revengers backed up the hype and the show is going phenomenal. The show focuses on 90s Tokyo gang wars and our protagonist, Takemichi, time traveling to save her girlfriend from dying in the future.
The show gives us somewhat of the same vibe as Re; life the show. What would happen if life gave you a second shot? Would you waste it again or take your chance at gaining your dreams?
Tokyo Revengers focuses on how Takemichi leaps through time just to save his girlfriend. The show gives us amazing visuals and some of the best-hyped fights we have yet to see from 2021. The show also gave us a meme that we all agree on, everyone wants Kisaki Tetta dead.

When Black Clover got released, there was one thing everyone kept saying, It’s a rip-off of Naruto/Bleach/One piece. But Black Clover proved itself by becoming its original show and got everyone hooked with its amazing fights and storyline.
Asta and Yuno were abandoned and raised at the same church with the same dream of growing up and becoming the wizard king. Only, there is one problem, Asta has no magic powers. Yuno on the other hand is a Magic using badass.
Despite all his flaws, Asta never gave up and kept training his physical abilities. The stars finally shined on Asta or should I say, the demons smiled at Asta and gave him a grimoire with a demon inside it.
Asta, after gaining their powers, noticed he had anti-magic powers and, in a world filled with magic, having anti-magic kind of makes you overpowered. The show has amazing fight scenes and character development. If you can move past Asta screaming for the first 20 episodes then this show gets really interesting.

Sooner or later, this was bound to be on this list. How could we forget the title holder for best anime in myanimelist for years and currently lost its spot by none other than Gintama?
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood definitely deserved that spot and some might say I’m wrong, but we all grew up watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. We all know that the show has everything an action anime needs to have. It has great fighting scenes, a great story, great animation, amazing jokes, and finally, a character development that kept us glued to the screen.
As the show says, “In order for something to be obtained, something of equal value must be lost.” The show got its spot on this list because of all its amazing qualities but it lost its spot at number one and is here because the show got old and there is better-animated action anime now. Can someone explain to me how Edward suddenly grew so tall after getting his lost arm and leg back?

What’s up with 90s anime and the father of MC going missing? You might ask me why did you put such an old anime at such a high spot? It’s because Hunter x Hunter did everything right when it came to making a good Shonen anime.
It gave us a banger of a story, some amazing action-packed fights, and a sense of danger that kept us thinking that Gon, our MC, is going to survive this. The show’s best moment is its climax and I wish I could describe it but I really do not want to spoil this show. It’s that good.
I do feel they did not work on developing Kurapika and Leorio that much but their character developed Gon and Killua to the point where they became unstoppable forces.

What’s better than boxing? The answer is futuristic boxing. Megalo Box is an anime that’s the world is not in the future yet but is in the process of reaching it. Our protagonist, Joe, is an old-school boxer, now a junkyard dog or rather I should say a nobody.
After seeing Joe’s abilities Gansaku wishes to train him and with his advice, Joe and Gansaku go on a journey to become the best boxer in the world. But there is a problem. Everyone nowadays is using mechanical arms to box. They didn’t have the money.
So, Joe trusted his natural skills and became gearless Joe or the black horse who didn’t fight with a mechanical arm. The show gives us a story about how to get a balance on changing time and adapting or keeping your roots. Besides that, it has Hajime no Ippo levels of boxing choreography.

Many anime fans cringe when they hear the word CGI. But I am telling you, Inuyashiki is a hidden gem that nobody is talking about. It is good because it’s CGI. The show is about how two people one night were faced with alien technology and were experimented on.
Once they opened their eyes, they slowly found out that all of their body had been transformed into a cyborg. The show constantly pins us down to decide who we should side with. The good or the bad. Two people were given the same power, one used it for good and one used it for mass murder.
The show visualizes human psychology so well. We are also shown the loneliness, anxiety, and depression that MC, Inuyashiki faces in this anime. This anime deserves a season 2.

Do I even need to explain Attack on Titan? You guys should already know how spectacular Attack on Titan is. To keep things short, Humans are on the verge of extinction, and to save themselves, they have created their own utopia or cage as I like to call it.
They believe as long as these walls stand, we are safe from the Titans that roam outside. But one day, the walls broke and people were killed. This left a big impression on MC, Eren, who had to witness his mother being eaten alive.
Now with hate in his heart, Eren joins the survey corps to eliminate every last titan and make earth safer for humans. I swear the description does not do the show justice. Just go watch this show and get your minds blown on what a masterpiece Hajime Isayama has made.

Moving on from one legend to another. I present to you Berserk, the goriest anime you will ever see. It’s filled with blood, bones, amazing sword fights, politics, backstabs, and enough drama to make you want to know how Guts, our MC, is going to take his revenge.
Guts is a guy that had to fight for survival from the moment he was born, after a bunch of struggles Guts somehow honed his sword skills enough to get noticed by a mercenary group called “Band of the Hawk”.
Its leader Griffith took a liking to Guts and made him his right hand but slowly for power, Griffith backstabbed Guts and that’s where the story really starts. The manga of Berserk is far better than the anime in my opinion. So, go read the manga.

Another show with an amazing story that keeps the viewers on edge. What do you get when you mix amazing story writing and a badass animation studio? You get Demon Slayer. After our protagonist, Tanjiro’s father died, he had to take care of his family. Only, to one day see them massacred by someone. Only his sister Nezuko being the sole survivor yet being transformed into a demon, Tanjiro now filled with anger and a reason to find the cure for his sister travels to find the murderer. The show has eye-catching animations and award-worthy voice acting. Even the side characters are done so well that you might mistake them for main characters. The show is good, very good.

Finally, our top pick of the day is Fire Force. I felt Fire Force did not get the recognition it deserved. It did everything perfectly and still got outshined by Demon Slayer. Fire Force has amazing unique characters, each with their unique fire abilities.
It has death-defying action scenes done perfectly; it also has a storyline that’s as good as any AAA class anime. The action scenes in Fire Force are like food for the eyes. Talking about the plot, Our MC, Shinra lost his parents during a fire.
He thinks it was a murder as the world that Shinra lives in, here humans have an ability called Spontaneous Human Combustion or humans turn into fire demons. Shinra thinks his family was somehow targeted and Joins the Fire Force to solve this mystery. The show has amazing comic relief characters like Iris, Tamaki, and Maki. These three characters do an excellent job in keeping the show child-friendly while Shinra’s storyline goes darker and darker.
Conclusion

Tell Me, which one you're ready to watch!?
Finally, As the new age of animation approaches, we will see, even more, even better action anime that will make us stick to our chairs and keep us anticipating what might happen next. Whether it is gunfights, boxing, zombies, or spells like EXPLOOOOSIONN, Japan would always surprise us with shocking and jaw-dropping action anime.
