The ’90s were actually a pretty good year for anime. Some of the best manga adaptations and OVA’s came out and almost all of them have stunning aesthetics considering they aired before I was even born.

Now we are all dedicated Otakus here and this list will actually measure your level of Otakuness. Let’s see how many of those masterpieces you watched till now.

Two friends went on a hunting trip in the woods. Somehow they managed to lose their way and after walking for a while they found a strange restaurant.

It was in the middle of nowhere, why would anyone build something here. The whole place gave off an extremely creepy and unsettling vibe but that must be their imagination right? What could ever happen in a deserted place?

They should’ve listened to their instinct and left the wretched place but now it is too late, the hunters will learn what it feels like to be hunted.

All Akito does all day all night and every day is play that stupid mecha game nonstop but when it comes to piloting a real mecha in real life he says he doesn’t want to fight, that he is satisfied with the fantasy thing.

However, the choice was no longer in his hands when Mars was attacked, his home was destroyed and he somehow found himself back on Earth.

He has so many questions he wants the answers to, but no one seems to know them or no one wants to give them to him.

Luckily he met a girl he might get some info from. The girl is the captain of a ship and she is called Yurika.

To get close to her, he asks her to join her crew as their new chef. He was accepted, however, upon learning that he was a chip inside of him that made it super easy for him to pilot and control a mecha, obviously they made him a fighter.

On his way back to Mars, at least he has the chance to avenge his home, although I don’t think he ever planned on doing so in the first place.

Izumo is a prince, the prince of Nakatsukuni to be exact. In opposition to his cousin who is bright and diligent, Izumo has no intention of studying and staying cramped up in a tiny room while the world is waiting for him.

One day a girl called Sanae arrived in his country. The girl comes from a mysterious clan, a clan that possesses unique powers.

Sanae who was the talk of the town gets kidnaped by a lackey acting on behalf of his country, the kingdom of Akusa. She was thrown into the grasp of an evil and very powerful witch called Yomihime and it should have been the end for her.

However, Izumo decided otherwise. He took his country’s sacred sword although he couldn’t control it and with the help of his pilot friend he went after Sanae.

He thought his most dangerous opponent was the witch, he got that wrong, it would’ve been too easy otherwise 

Before getting the right to challenge her he must defeat the legendary Yamata-no-Orochi, an eight-headed snake that was revived just for him.

A mad yet genius Nazi scientist called Dr. Von Reichter’s managed to create, through horrible experiments, the first models of “Cybers”, artificial super soldiers why incredible capabilities 

However, those Cybers displayed one major problem, well only in his eyes, at a very early stage, they began to show signs of free will.

To make sure the anime doesn’t turn into I, Robot, he began to destroy his magnificent inventions fearing they would someday rebel against their creator.

Enhanced soldier VS nerdy doctor, guess who has the upper hand. While he managed to put an end to some of them and create a new type of Cybers called “Technos”, a good bunch escaped and Cybersix was one of them.

She had no desire for revenge, she took a new name and hid in plain sight. But she soon realized that in order to survive she had to put her hands on a special substance made by the Nazis.

She ultimately became a Technos hunter, stealing their life source for her own benefit. However, for the people whom she saved from their grasp, she was a full-fledged hero.

Nello Daas is a young boy of humble origins. Although he is a prodigious artist, he makes a living by selling milk on the market. 

Nello has an unusual friend for a peasant, Alois Cogez, a noble, daughter of a very rich and very influential landlord.

The landlord, furious about the relationship that is in no way befitting for his high standard of his flesh and blood, sends his daughter away to a faraway school almost on the other side of the world to make sure they will never see each other again.

It’s just that he never would’ve thought that an art contest that was being organized would be his ultimate enemy since the prize was to go study in the same city where his daughter is now residing in.

Realizing that boy has actually a very high chance of winning, he starts concocting plans to ensure his failure.

However, talent and determination mixed with honesty and a good heart always prevail in the end.

Three characters who have nothing to do with each other, let’s just say, fell into the same pinch. 

We have Junpei Ryuzouji, an expert martial artist who is way too loud for our ears, Airi Komiyama, a stunning actress who’s way too beautiful for Junpei Ryuzouji to be around her, and Ritsuko Inoue, a normal student with a weird fetish for artillery.

They were minding their own business when they got transported into a fantasy world filled with magic and fantastic creatures. No bigger picture here, when the elven priestess found them, she casually proposed to send them back.

However, she was interrupted as she was casting her spell and it went sideways. Pieces of the spell are now imprinted on various elves across this magic land.

So, Inuyasha style, they set on an adventure to put the spell back together. A simple task technically but somehow the cuckoo trio who brought calamity everywhere they went ended up being feared and known as “Those Who Hunt Elves”.

He made the bigger choice, he packed his bags and left home. A bit too extreme a solution, but better them looking at them getting all lovey-dovey every day in front of him.

He moved into a dorm known as Greenwood where he thought he’d be able to find some peace of mind, reorganize his emotions and feelings, forget about the girl or even find someone better than her.

However, he drew the short straw cuz Greenwood is certainly not the place where he will find solace surrounded by the weirdest most peculiar characters even we ever saw.

In ChinaTown, there is a guy who calls himself Coun D. Cound D owns a pet shop, however, he doesn’t sell any kind of pet, just the rarest of the rarest, animals you might never have heard of before. 

Every time he makes a sale, the buyer has to sign a contract. In the contract, there is a set of rules he has to follow. If he abides by it, everything will turn out fine, he will have nothing to worry about. BUT, if he doesn’t the shop is in no way responsible for what comes after.                                                                                  

Now you might ask, what can possibly happen? Just what kind of monsters are they welcoming into their houses? 

At some point, many mysterious deaths or more exactly murders were popping out in China Town, and a homicide detective called Leon Orcot was put on the case.

He managed to link all the crimes to the bizarre pet shop and now, he is on the Count’s trail. Hope he doesn’t get himself killed if he digs a bit too deep, the Count cherishes his privacy.

Everyone admires her, looks up to her, loves her even, but none of them know who she really is. All that magnificence is just a façade. The truth is, she struggles so much to keep up her reputation and she endures it all because she just loves to be the center of attention.

This is exactly why she hates Souichirou Arima. The guy is stealing all her spotlight and what’s even worse, he does it so effortlessly that means he might actually be perfect, he doesn’t wear a mask of fakeness like her.

However, determined to crush him, she worked even harder and managed to take back her title. But to her surprise, instead of cursing her for her achievements, he genuinely congratulated her.

It was at that moment that the girl realized she had been leading the vain life of a devious and deceptive snake.

Before telling you what that series is about, I would just like to thank you for the memories that you guys brought back. The nostalgia that I felt as I was reading the title is indescribable.

This one might have been the first anime that I ever watched and one of the greatest. However, as I grew older, I completely forgot about it and it was just amazing to watch it again.

So the story is about two policy women who didn’t know each other. One uptight, Miyuki, and one a bit on the crazy side who ironically kinda likes to break some rules, Natsumi.

It was Natsumi’s first day of work and she overslept, driving her bike like a madman, now don’t get me wrong she always drives like this, she was rushing to arrive on time.

Miyuki busted her for reckless driving and that’s putting it nicely, brought her to the police station only to learn that she was going to be her new partner.

They started off on the wrong foot, plus their opposite personalities didn’t help. However, it turned out that each one would cover for the weaknesses of the other.

It’s a hilarious series based on trust, justice, friendship, and courage.

 

52. Speed Racer X

Kenich Hibiki is first and foremost a racer, and on top of that, he is also a prodigious engineer. He just created a revolutionary car called “Mach” that he equipped with an engine of his creation that he called engine “X”.

He was testing his new invention, but things went horribly wrong. He crashed and was reported dead.

Although it’s not the best of mementos considering it was the machine that killed his son, Kenich’s father, Daisuke, recovered the pieces in his memory.

Wanting to revive his son’s latest work, he rebuilt the Mach from scratch and it’s now racing in the Grand Prix.

Well, he tweaked it a bit since he added as many as seven safety nets to make sure that the car doesn’t claim another driver’s life. That’s the least he could’ve done considering its now Kenich’s little brother, Go, who’s at the wheel of the death trap.

Can he live up to his brother’s legend? Or maybe will he surpass him with the car that he designed?

A US aircraft was carrying a hydrogen bomb over Japanese waters in secret. Due to a certain turn of events, the bomb fell into the water and was lost forever. 

It was a maritime disaster for the creatures of the sea. Now contaminated, they were turning into mutated monsters.

The whales, desperate to save their home, managed to communicate telepathically with a young fisherman called Ashika.

Confused at first, he thought he was crazy until he couldn’t deny the truth anymore after seeing the whales with his own eyes.

Understanding the dire situation they were in, he also realized that it would have a devastating impact on all of Japan.

He heard their cry for help loud and clear and accepted to help them. Together, a boy and whale set on an adventure to save the whole maritime life of their beloved country, their home.

Can an uneducated fisherman manage to defuse a high-tech bomb while killing horrid monsters, I doubt it, but whales can talk either, so anything could happen in that anime.

Shizuku Tsukishima is a cute little girl full of energy and positivity. Her hobbies are poetry and literature, I know, unusual for a 14 years old brat, we don’t even like that. 

Every time she checks out a book from the library she realizes that the same boy called Seiji Amasawa is always borrowing all her favorite titles.

It was like she found her reading soul mate and decided to look for him. It should have been like searching for a needle in a haystack, Japan is huge after all, but luck played its part well.

As she was riding the train, she saw a cat and for some reason decided to follow it. The cat brought her to an antique shop that piqued her interest and guess who she found in that ship, yep, you got it, Seiji.

The two brats became friends and it was like they knew each other for years. Seiji shared his dream with her and at that moment she realized that she had no goal of her own, she had no specific talent either.

Following his example, she set her first goal and found out what her dream is by listening to her heart’s desires.

 

49. Run Melos!

Melos is a humble and honest boy from Messina. He traveled to Syracuse on his own in order to find a worthy ritual sword to be used during his beloved sisters’ marriage. 

When he got there, he met a talented sculptor and they hit it off really quickly, you can even say they became best friends.

As they were having a walk in the castle gardens, the King realized that there was a new face present in the city. The paranoid King, convinced that millions of assassins were after his precious life, concluded that he was definitely one of them.

With no proof, and just using his power, he sentenced the boy to die. An unfair and cruel judgment.

Knowing that he was doomed, his last request was to assist at his sister’s wedding. The King told him that if he could find an idiot that would take his place in prison as collateral, he’d let him go.

The idiot was the sculptor who volunteered. Melos was then freed and had three days to go back home, attend the wedding, and come back. If he was just one minute late, it was the sculptor’s head that would be rolling on the hot ground.

He left his bat behind, enrolled in a school with no baseball team, abandoned his friend who still believed in him, and started fresh as a loser.

He joined the soccer club, and he was not half bad but nothing compared to his former self. His teammates were arrogant and super full of themselves but as long as they acknowledged him he really didn’t care.

One day he learned that there was an unofficial baseball team in his school and that the soccer team challenged them to a “friendly match” organized to humiliate them.

They were overwhelmed and the soccer team was already celebrating their victory before the match even ended. However, Hiro had enough of them and switched sides. Guess who’s laughing now.

 

47. Battle Angel Alita

The world is now a post-apocalyptic hell where only the strong can survive. In that hell lives a mechanic called Doc Ido. He lives in the worst disgusting dumb you can find on the destroyed Earth, a place called “Scrapyard”. 

The scrapyard is where everyone’s junk is dumped. But in all that trash, Doc Ido managed to find a treasure. He found a girl cyborg in perfect condition.

He fired her up and Gally awakened. Suffering from amnesia, the enhanced overpowered robot decided that she could start anew even on this hopeless planet.

I just hope she didn’t expect to live some peaceful day cuz the word peace was now scratched off the dictionary forever. Every day is a fight for one’s life and she is no exception, she just has a cheat that is a metal body and super strength.

Now that is saying it like that, maybe she’ll manage to revive the word if she makes everyone kneel before her and rule over them with an iron fist.

Everyone is scratching their heads trying to find new and innovative cooking styles that will elevate their dishes to unimaginable heights

We will be following Mao on his journey toward culinary greatness. His mother was a virtuoso in the kitchen, she was called the “Fairy of Cuisine”. Unfortunately, she passed away leaving behind her son and her legendary restaurant.

Mao, determined to take his mother’s place and keep the restaurant alive and on top is now traveling all around China, mastering new cooking techniques and polishing his skills so he can one day become worthy of his mother’s title.

On the road, he made many friends but just as many enemies, or more correctly, rivals. Rivals that would challenge him every day and force him to become better and better. It looks like they helped more than anyone else.

 

45. Cardcaptor Sakura

Sakura Kinomoto was just a mundane little girl until she put her hands on a peculiar card book called “The Clow”. Going through it out of curiosity, she accidentally activates a wind spell that scatters the cards all over town.

However, that’s not all that happened, she also released the Beast of the Seal, the infamous Keroberos or Kero for short.

Kero is now explaining to Sakura the magnitude of her action. The cards are super dangerous items with special powers that were sealed by their creator because of the disasters they can cause.

It is crucial to put them back in the book or the world might blow up by mistake. We don’t want that now.

Kero upgrades the girl from human to “Cardcaptor” and entrusts her with the Sealed Key to make her job a bit easier.

Now let’s see how a ten-year-old is going to manage to lead a double life without letting anyone find out about it.

 

44. Future GPX Cyber Formula

I don’t know if you remember how you were when you were 14, but I’m sure it’s not very normal to become a professional racer at that age. And as far as I know, isn’t 18 the legal driving age. 

Well, Kazami Hayato broke way too many rules and is a contestant in the Cyber Formula Grand Prix.

At the wheel of a top-edge technological car integrated with a cybernavigation system that assists the driver, he is contending on the 10th edition of the most competitive race on Earth.

Super full of himself and relying mostly on his engine, he will soon realize that the power comes from the talent of the guy behind the wheel and the car itself.

Surrounded by legends, the first step is to make them acknowledge him as a worthy rival. If he wins the race then that’s that, two birds in one stone, fame, and respect.

Big words for a little brat, however, you will find yourself cheering for him. He just has that kind of attractive charisma.

 

43. Kyouryuu Boukenki Jura Tripper

Okay, a confusing plot, or more exactly one that doesn’t really make sense but at the time this anime was a must-watch. 

15 students were on a school trip when they were suddenly transported to another world or went back in time maybe. Anyway, it’s a world filled with dinosaurs.

As they were searching for a way to go back to their timeline, some random people decided to aid them.

So we have on the good guys’ team kind dinosaurs who can talk, rebels, pirates, I know where she came from but we also have a princess and people who think they can be called scientists.

They are defending them against the bad guys’ team composed of evil dinosaurs, thieves, soldiers, and fanatic priests.

As expected from this mishmash, clashes between allies emerged, and even love managed to blossom, ah, now I see, love was most probably the problem.

 Well, I suggest you give up on the girl, none of you are getting the beauty, and focus on working together to survive.

 

42. Roujin Z

Finally, humans decide to invent something that will benefit us in the future. They put in motion a plan that they called Z Project. 

That project is meant to aid the new generation of young adults by putting a system together that will take care of the elder on its own.

The young ones were super hyped and approved of the project without giving it another thought.

A test subject was chosen, his name was Mr. Takazawa, and was thrown in the first model of the Z-001 machine.

Only one girl thought it was maybe too good to be true. That girl was Haruko and she questioned everything about the machine, something was just not right but she couldn’t put her finger on it.

She decided to investigate and found out that the machine had a bizarre chip, a chip that was giving it a will for itself. Why would a machine need a mind? What is the true purpose of this project? The real face of humans was showing its true colors once again.

 

41. Orphen

While most of the higher-ups decided to bury the incident, one guy was not having it. Krilancelo cared greatly about Azali, he considered her his big sister, and just for info, he was just as skilled as she was.

Hell-bent on saving her, he threw away his rank, his title, his bright future, even his name, and asked to be called Orphen from now on.

He took off after the dragon, promising to himself that he will definitely turn her back into a human. But things weren’t as straightforward as they appeared, he is in for lots and lots of surprises.

You can consider this movie the biography of the famous poet, Kenji Miyazawa. Using his writing style and his entire life, using animals as the poet often did, the director of this movie made honor to the legendary artist. 

Deep content, intense morals, unique aesthetic, and complex concepts, this movie will fill your head for a full 56 minutes.

If you thought the life of a poet was boring, think again. Their creative thinking process is one of the most interesting and elaborate processes and managing to depict it in pictures is nothing less than a great and extraordinary achievement.

In order to find a way to go back from where they came from, they set on an adventure to explore the land.

Evil was deeply rooted in the Digital World and they slowly began to understand that they were brought here for a purpose. But how can young brats save an entire universe, isn’t it too much to ask?

Ryo Saeba is maybe the best shot in this entire anime universe. Among criminals, his name is infamous, among the ladies as well, and not for a good reason. 

He went through lots of things during his life and finally settled and became a private detective. He hired an assistant called Kaori Makimura and together their job is to fix all their clients’ problems no matter how small.

Detective by day, perverted lady killer in his free time, Kaori’s collection of hammers is making sure to put him back in place if his hands start to travel where they shouldn’t be.

I think she may be jealous that he is hitting on everyone except her. What do you think guys? I’m probably right, right?

A comedy-action series that will give you one of the best laughs you had in ages, I know it’s old but lucky you, it can still be found online so you don’t have any excuses not to watch it.

Teppei, who managed to survive the attack, went after Aramis but lost her. Instead, he stumbled upon a robotic horse that was thrown away a long time ago considering its condition.

A drop of his blood fell on the weird machine and it revived. The horse was known as B’t X and from this moment forth, he became Teppei’s faithful partner.

Now having an ally that can soar through the skies, getting his brother back just became way easier, well, that’s what he thought at least. I don’t want to crush his hopes just yet, but I’d tone it down a bit if I was him.

Now I know you all know what Hunter X Hunter is about so can we just talk about its reboot!!!!

The manga just fired up after a super long break and the main character is Gon no more. The new hero of the story is the powerful, prideful Kakkoii, Kurapika. I do love him but I’m a bit sad that the spotlight wasn’t given to Killua, he’s my personal favorite.

There are talks that it might get an anime adaptation as well. I can feel it, it’s happening and it’s one of the greatest anime news of the year!

 

2. Berserk

So many questions that need answering and I hope they take their time answering them.
