15+ Anime with Overpowered Villains (Recommendations)

Updated July 25, 2022 by

We’re aware of overpowered main characters like that guy who screams to increase power, or overpowered supporting characters like the Japanese version of Johnny Bravo. So why should we ignore overpowered villains? I mean, many female otaku members simp more over villains than the main or supporting characters of the ever growing anime industry worldwide. Don’t antagonize them for their tastes though, we all have our tastes that we prefer to hide because of how weird it is.

Table of Contents

Before we get distracted about the female otakus and their weird tastes, kinnies, or whatever terminologies they use these days, let’s get right back on track. What was it again? Oh yeah, let’s check out 16 Anime with Overpowered Villains. Some are popular enough that you may recognize them without even watching the series at all.

ANIME WITH AN OP ANTAGONIST

16. Madoka Magica – Kyuubey

Madoka Magica

Okay, to those who haven’t watched this anime series yet, you may think it’s weird that it’s even on this list. After all, it is about middle schoolers becoming magical girls. Two perfectly normal kids on a perfectly normal day were walking home when two incredibly strange people – well, one of them is a creature, not a person – offer granting one wish of their choosing like a kidnapper offering kids some candy for some suspicious reason.

Kyuubey is the name of the creature mentioned earlier. Looks more like a combination of Sylveon from Pokemon and that one strange creature from a manga I read called Miki. Anyway, he offered Madoka and Sayaka, the two middle school girls, granting any wish with the cost of becoming magical girls themselves. Kind of hypocritical considering Homura Akemi, their new transfer student classmate at school, warned them not to accept the offer with an ominous statement. This turns out to be true as, despite the Sylveon-wannabe’s appearance, size included, the ability to transform normal girls into magical girls is incredibly powerful for a kitten-sized being

15. Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld – Vassago

Sword Art Online Alicization – War of Underworld Reflection (2019)

I think some of you are tired of Sword Art Online for its near occurrences to a h-genre-type relationship with the MC, Kirito. The girls look like a shielded version of Date A Live–I say shielded because only one of them is in a relationship with the main character. Wait—I need to stop ranting about these things. SAO Alicization focused on Akihiko’s dream of bringing artificial human intelligence to reality.

Sometime near the end of Alicization’s first season, Kirito’s fluctlight – the particle in a human’s brain that holds human consciousness – was damaged. Turns out that the old guild leader of the “Laughing Coffin” in the series first ever season, Vassago, was behind the ambush on the ship containing Kirito’s body, and in turn, his fluctlight, which is still unstable both in the artificial world, and the real world, was disrupted. Vassago planned everything out in order to commit revenge against Kirito for stopping his fun–killing other players. This guy is considered overpowered for his near unstoppable nature as a killer.

14. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood – Father

Warning to kids reading this, don’t try to resurrect the dead. It may seem fun in games, but don’t ever try this, as it comes to a cost between life and death. Unfortunately, this warning didn’t get to Edward and Alphonse Elric, the brothers we follow in this anime series, as they attempted to bring back their dead mother to life using a ritual. Keyword: attempted. Karma came to bite their behinds… well, one and another’s non-existent behinds. Edward, the older of the two brothers, lost a leg in the process. Alphonse’s body disintegrated like the hobo’s arm when he fought with the crusty villain. Hold on, wrong anime. Ahem! Alphonse’s soul remained and was bound to a hunk of armor, with Edward’s arm as a sacrifice to keep his soul in the living realm

In their pursuit of bringing their bodies back to normal, they encountered Father in the end—nope, not their father. The Father of Homunculi, creatures born of Philosopher’s Stones with names of the Seven known Deadly Sins—Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Pride, Lust, Envy, and Sloth. Obviously, since he is the dad, he’s the most powerful of the homunculi.

13. Baki the Grappler – Yujiro Hanma

Baki The Grappler

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
15/20 8/10 7/10 6/10 36/50

This anime practically stalks the Hanma family. The father, Yujiro Hanma, is the most overpowered person in the series as he was known to master all hand-to-hand combat styles. He is impossibly powerful because of fighting in battles, wars, since he was sixteen years old, bare handed. Specifically, he fought in the Vietnam War against not only the Americans, but also the Vietcong. Personally, I’m glad he isn’t like that crazy guy in Yu Yu Hakusho.

Yujiro has two kids, Baki and Jack Hanma. Baki, the main character in the series, trained in various fighting styles and techniques. His main goal? Why, to defeat his old man, of course! I don’t know what’s wrong with anime. Sometimes, one fears their dad, another despises their dad, while other fatherly figures disappear off the face of the earth. They all come to the final conclusion though—their kids defeat them. So far I haven’t seen one as brutal as Greek Mythology goes between gods and killing their Titan dad, who killed his primordial dad. Chopped into pieces, too.

12. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure – Dio Brando

Jojo's Bizarre Adventures

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
15/20 9/10 7/10 6/10 37/50

Following my point earlier, this one follows the path of Dio Brando, adopted child of George Joestar. George fell ill, and his son, Jonathan, blames Dio because of his stepbrother’s attempts of doing him one better than him to bring the Joestar fortune to his possession. Dario, Dio’s father, apparently ‘saved’ the Joestar family. Dario was just trying to take their belongings while the father and son were unconscious.

Dio, in his secret plan of taking the Joestar family fortune for himself, was beaten in a brawl against his stepbrother. Jonathan was still suspicious of Dio, and thought that the guy was behind his father’s illness. Oh, did I mention Dio’s dad was dead and that’s why he was adopted? I didn’t? Oh, well. Dio is also an immortal vampire, so who knows if he really was behind the illness or not.

11. Psycho Pass – Sibyl System

Psycho pass

Criminal ratings decreased drastically in Japan after they enforced the Sibyl System. Turns out that one’s mental state can show even the tiniest sign of criminal intent. It’s known as the Psycho-Pass, by the way. Akane Tsunemori, a newbie working with veteran Enforcers like Shinya Kougami, began seeing a twisted sense of justice from within the system (not like there’s anything new with that). The Sibyl System was created to uphold justice in the country. How can justice be upheld if the system itself is corrupted? Personally, politics can easily influence people negatively, be it corrupted by power. People letting an artificially intelligent system control justice through its corrupt manner of overlooking the country is just asking for trouble.

10. Gurren Lagann – Anti-Spiral

gurren lagann

16/20 8/10 8/10 7/10 39/50

Before you think of spiral patterns, don’t. Don’t even think that it is about people spinning in a spiral motion either. No, it would be best to avoid the non-human specter that can easily destroy universes in a single snap like Thanos. Not even the Gunmen (gigantic robots controlled by Beastmen, non-human pirates). Who would have thought that Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd- hold on, wrong series. Let’s rewind. Who would have thought that Simon, Kamina, and Yoko, the three protagonists of Gurren Lagann, would have to wander almost aimlessly across the barren surface of the planet? They have to watch out for trouble, for goodness sake! And they’re young, teenagers at most!

9. Hunter X Hunter – Meruem

Hunter X Hunter

Thank goodness, Hunter X Hunter is getting a comeback! I’m pretty sure many of my fellow HxH fans have awaited the announcement, and guess what guys? Our prayers have been ANSWERED! The adventures that the main protagonists—Pointy broccoli, humanoid cotton, adorable blonde, and adult-looking teen—have experienced has stretched far and wide. No matter the distance between them, no matter how different their journeys flowed, their friendship stayed strong and never changed. The hardest hurdle Gon and Killua experienced, however, was the battle against the Chimera Ants

Meruem, the strongest offspring of the Chimera Ant Queen and considered as the Chimera Ant King, wanted nothing more than to eat delicious food. Specifically, the meat of living people. In his schemes of having a constant source of living food, he brought the human population to his kingdom, where he challenged the humans in strategic games, and those who lost will be his meal.

8. Bleach – Sousuke Aizen

Bleach

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
17/20 8/10 8/10 8/10 41/50

Quite similar to Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, the encounter between high school student Ichigo Kurosaki and Grim Reaper Rukia Kuchiki caused a chain reaction of weirdness, danger, and ability activations. Not exactly what Ichigo Kurosaki expected for his high school days, specifically because he is one of those kids who can see ghosts and other nasty stuff as clear as day. What his encounter with one of the Grim Reapers of the Soul Society allowed him to do was own a sword, and see Hollows, an otherworldly No-Face… uhh let’s change no-face with big-hole, shall we? Otherworldly Big-Hole beings that wreak havoc on the Spiritual Realm that exists on top of the Human Realm. I call them Big-Hole because where their souls are supposed to be, a large gap from the front to the back exists.

I’m sure that most simps agree with me that one of the Soul Society Captains is handsome, kind-hearted, calm and soft-spoken. Sousuke Aizen is overpowered, and this personality type is rightly dangerous, especially to his enemies. Don’t underestimate this guy for that, because he can be manipulative, analytic, and you can’t help but simp for his alter-ego personality.

7. Naruto Shippuden Season 17 – Kaguya Ootsutsuki

Naruto Shippuden Season 17

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
17/20 9/10 8/10 8/10 42/50

Naruto is no longer a kid, his friends are ahead of him and are already Junins (high school level ninjas) whereas he is still a Genin (elementary school level ninja) in ranking. His abilities grew stronger after spending his time training away like Natsu did with his Fairy Tail guild, only longer by a year and a half. Defeating the Akatsuki, the Living Dead (literally resurrected overpowered villains and heroes of the past, including Naruto’s dad), they had a few, peaceful moments. That’s when the mother of dragons– (why do I keep getting distracted?!) the mother of Chakra came down to earth, Princess Kaguya Ootsutsuki.

Princess Kaguya is not your typical princess. She has two kids, Hagaromo and Hamura, but she is more known to have created Chakra, and was an influencer in the creation of the most powerful Tailed Beast, the Ten-Tails. You remember the destruction this beast created? Yeah, she was part of creating it, and so became the reason for including her in this list of overpowered villains.

6. Seven Deadly Sins – The Demon King

seven deadly sins

17/20 9/10 8/10 9/10 43/50

It’s kind of ironic that the protagonists are known as the Seven Deadly Sins while the antagonists are recognized as the Holy Knights, It’s even more ironic that the one with worse yet more powerful abilities are named the Ten Commandments, ruled and commanded by the Demon King. This dude literally seemed to like reenacting Star Wars’ popular quote, “I am your father,” except as the anime version and that the pervy MC we know is, for those who haven’t watched this series yet, a demon. This makes my point “anime protagonists and their father-child relationships” more clear. If you think Meliodas was overpowered, then this villain was ten-times worse. Try to think of Acnologia but with the typical appearance of a Demon Lord or King.

5. One Piece – Kaido

One-Piece-

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total

Another teenager joins the fray! Luffy and his friends: the multiverse guy, the stuff toy deer, the snotty slingshot, the playboy, the thief, the weightlifting humanoid, and the sexy librarian traveled across the Grand Line, fighting enemies left and right on their journey of finding One Piece, the treasure that promised riches, fame, and the title of being the next Pirate King. What can be heard among the rumors that spread over oceans and lands is of the “strongest creature of the world,” Kaido.

This guy was known as the captain of the Beasts Pirates, and his title was revealed after the Straw Hat pirates (Luffy and his crew) defeated Gecko Moriah, who mentioned Kaido’s name after taking Luffy’s shadow. We don’t know if the other rumor about Kaido owning an army of 500 devil fruit users was true as it sounds ridiculously surreal.

4. D-Gray Man – Millenium Earl

D Gray Man

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
18/20 9/10 9/10 9/10 45/50

Another character voiced by the voice actor of Chief Investigator Megure from the Detective Conan series, even the same roundness, the Millenium Earl from the D-Gray Man series is the most overpowered as he can create demons from the souls of dead family and friends. He is also the leader, or father (again), of the Noah Family. D-Gray Man is about how Allen Walker (not from Star Wars, sadly) became an Exorcist, people who save the suffering souls used to create the Akuma—fighting with his arm as his weapon known as Innocence and an eye that can see the mentioned suffering souls.

Allen Walker became involved with this side of the world after he became a victim of the Millenium Earl’s trickery of bringing back the dead to life, then using the soul of that deceased person as a core for his Akuma. To stop the Earl’s plot of destroying the whole world with his overly powerful abilities, Allen and his fellow Exorcists move to collect more Innocence, and exorcize the souls who couldn’t rest because of the whims of a rounded sorcerer.

3. Dragon Ball Super – Beerus

Dragon Ball Super

Okay, many of my fellow Dragon Ball fans are aware of this dude’s existence, and it may be redundant to even mention more details about him here, but we need to provide mentioned details for those who haven’t encountered him yet. Practically everyone who is reading this knows what type of anime Dragon Ball is: battle-focused and comedy-filled. After what many can assume to be the end of it, the series revives with a new enemy, a more dangerous, world-destroying, and mind-blowing one at that. Please welcome the God of Destruction, Beerus. If you noticed my politeness, no one deserves the respect for such, but this overpowered god. Oh, and his wonderful assistant.

Awakened with curiosity (please don’t die because you’re a cat) and disturbance of a prophecy (Super Saiyan God, apparently), he goes to Earth and encounters Goku. Besides the fact that he acts like a cat, he can easily destroy planets at the snap of his fingers (don’t you dare think “Oh, just like Thanos”) and follow his own whims.

2. Boku no Hero Academia – All For One

My Hero Academia

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
19/20 8/10 10/10 10/10 47/50

This anime is one of my favorites, but not for the common reason others have. The plot is good, the animation is cool, and the overall character developments occurring are awesome. That’s not why this is one of my favorites. It’s because many fanfictions are better in plot, and I read a lot of fanfictions in my spare time. Anyway, Izuku Midoriya, the broccoli MC, was born without quirks into a world with quirks. His father (again with fathers) works in the United States, and his mother, Inko, is a “fountain of tears,” so to speak. Izuku idolizes All Might, Japan’s number one hero, and when he meets the hero after being attacked by a giant slime from the sewers, he gets a quirk (one reason why I don’t like the cannon anime) called One For All. It’s a quirk that can be inherited.

Its counterpart, All For One, is a quirk that can give and take quirks by force. The whole anime focused on One For All and All For One’s dispute as the latter has always wanted to take the one and only quirk that he could not take by force. Of course, the greedy man would want to take what he can’t take.

1. Demon Slayer – Muzan Kibutsuji

Demon Slayer

OP Villain Character Writing Plot Animation Total
20/20 8/10 10/10 10/10 48/50

The anime version of Michael Jackson is called Muzan Kibutsuji, and he is similar to Kaguya, Millenium Earl, the Demon King, Father and Yujiro Hanma in the fact that he is, directly or indirectly, the progenitor (ahem, once again the father) of Demons, as he is the first Demon to have ever been created. Having killed Kamado Tanjiro’s family and making his younger sister a demon herself, the lone, surviving member of the Kamado family became a member of the Demon Slayer Corps as a means to make his younger sister a human again, and to commit revenge against Muzan. Apparently, this overpowered Michael Jackson, being a copy-cat to Beerus, kills humans or turns them into demons according to his own whimsical decisions. The anime plot is literally Tanjiro bringing karma to Muzan’s doorstep and slicing him with it, alongside his friends in the Demon Slayer Corps.
