Are you also one of those people who have a poser account on Facebook to pretend you’re someone else? What do you call that? RP? Role-play? Well… for this time, I’ll actually talk about another type of role-playing. We can say it is in game form. Yeah, RPG.
Table of Contents
When talking about role-play games (RPG), the first thing that comes to our mind is either Adventure Quest Worlds, Disco Elysium, Cyberpunk 2077, or all of the above. But, with these lists of RPG games you can play online, did you know that the first commercially available role-play games are not even online, or at least not even on consoles? Yesss, you’ve read it right. The first known rpg is not even digital. Well, because the first commercially available role-play game is a board game, and it is called Dungeons & Dragons. If you’re smart enough, you can even make this one an Anime Game!
The role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons has been structured yet open-ended. Typically, it is played inside, with players seated together around a table where one player takes the role of being a Dungeon Master, while the others control a character in a fictional scenario. That’s where the word “role-play” comes into play.
I know it’s quite amazing how this little board game managed to become the legend of all role-play games. Not only that, it’s also among the inspirations, or at least shows some resemblance with some anime. Anddddd.. Here are some of the anime that Dungeons & Dragons fans should watch.

This anime takes place in an Arabic country and is about a noble prince named Arslan who makes a stupid mistake and loses his kingdom. It’s really the prince’s decision, who has lost his glory, to win a lot of wars and epic insurgencies to get it back. It will take more than just brute force for him to get his kingdom back.
Many Dungeons & Dragons campaigns try to have an epic battle. Most of the time, they are very intense one-on-one battles or small skirmishes, but in Arslan, they are full-blown wars.
As a series, Arslan feels very much like a fiction-based historical story rather than fantasy, which is part of what has made it feel like a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. It doesn’t have to have crazy, fantastic beasts, but it does have all the glory of medieval combat. It reminds me of Game of Thrones in that way. But only like this. Who knew Historical Anime was this hype!

The entire anime is based on a dungeon that is meant to draw in guilds and heroes looking for glory. With dedication, skill, and a lot of milling, these journeys can start moving up the levels of the dungeon and get stronger as they do so. At first, Bell seems to want to become one of those heroes, but he doesn’t have the strength to really shine, at least not until he gets a power that lets him level up faster.
This anime has the best story, bringing a fun adventure anime with a truthful main character. It also has an electric grid that balances mastery of combat with random stats. Even though Bell is the main character, he gets a party pretty quickly, which makes the show feel more like a D&D anime.

This anime follows Yuyuke, a detective, as he fights demons and spirits as a teenager. You might recognize this show as quite similar to Dragon Ball Z or Sailor Moon. But D&D fans have already used the world of the show for initiatives and one-offs.
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons will like the action and the iconic drips from Urameshi. Demons like Kurama and Hiei and characters like Jin, who’s basically an air Genasi Fighter, are part of this.

In Scrapped Princess, Princess Pacifica, our main character, who, according to a prophecy, will end the world when she turns 16. Her foster siblings stand by her side just to protect everything, including her from those people who would kill her just to protect everything in the world. You may find this way too tragic, but this somehow reminds us of Danyal Hussein… if you know the story.
Okay, going back, we get the traditional group of fantasy heroes, and we also really have tricks that Dungeon Masters loooooooove to use. That’s a tough moral choice. Would you rather save just one life or save everyone on Earth? Sounds like a Miss Earth question, huh?
Most fantasy fans will recognize the style, but fans of Dungeons & Dragons will find a lot to connect with it and enjoy. This really sweet series does a great job of building up to the bigger story arc through a series of smaller events.

Not every Dungeons & Dragons game will be about a huge war. Maybe they’re stories about love. But of course, it’s likely that the romantic parts will be messy and strange. A little bit odd.
If someone made that initiative into campaigning for this anime, it’d be Yuu Watase’s first manga, Fushigi Yuugi, which was flawed but still remembered. This fantasy epic does have a lot of great ideas and characters that are easy to remember.
Miaka, from the normal world, is taken to a magical variant of ancient China. She has now become the Priestess of the old God and is told to find seven powerful warriors so she can bring this ancient being into the real world. This really sounds like Dungeons & Dragons after entering the Dungeon where everything changed.
And, just like in many D&D campaigns, a little of that story possibility works out, but some of it… doesn’t. But it’s still fun to get there. Also, David Hayter, doing the voice of Strong Snake, seems to be among the speakers in the English dub. That’s a thing, then.

At first glance, isekai manga appear to be designed for the fans of Dungeons & Dragons, as they literally involve the teleportation of regular people to extraordinary worlds. However, many isekai involve instantly overpowered characters and storylines, which are normally avoided in Dungeons & Dragons.
Well, we can somehow excuse this next anime. In the Isekai anime, a group of youths are transferred into a brutal world governed by game logic just because they are noticeably weak. Simple encounters with low-level foes are battles to the grave, and the heroes must cooperate as a unit to survive. Sadly, the anime is short and has a leisurely pace, so it lacks the dramatic growth found in Dungeons & Dragons stories.

Some people have already watched the movie version of this anime, but the complete series of Escaflowne gives the story a little more room to breathe. The world walks the best possible line between magic and science. A character who’s being removed from their normal daily routine and is in need of catching up with the latest outlook on life; this style of film and story making is somehow being used in this anime.
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons will love how the show builds a world. The Zaibach Empire leads a war for power, and the MC gets stucked in the middle of the love triangle. There’s also this big robot made of dragon bones. If you changed that to a Githyanki warrior as well as his Red Dragon, you’d have a good start for a campaign.

Fire Force is among the most popular anime we have for 2020 as it just finished its 2nd season with a big revelation. Every episode seems to show something new and interesting about how fire works or about The Evangelist. Fans of Dungeons & Dragons will love the show for a lot of reasons, besides its great story and exciting action scenes.
Based on their skills, it looks like all the characters belong to different classes. Joker’s powers are pretty much the same as Gambit’s, while Captain Obi seems to be an OP Fighter with no powers who is ready for anything. Even though there is still a lot to discover about the world, this same show has made it a really great place with lots of story possibilities.

Even though the sins are flawed in their own ways, they’re still the main characters of their own world.
This anime’s world is full of beautiful images, well-drawn characters, and a very interesting point: a traveling tavern with bad food. Well, it is something we could also like as fans of Dungeons and Dragons.

This next anime we have on our list is actually somehow inspired by that classic Dungeons and Dragons game. Even though it’s older, it holds up well thanks to its interesting graphics and character designs. Sometimes Slayers act pretty silly, but that is just half the fun in Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, right?
This anime is also focused on treasure hunting. It is also a good anime to watch with your friends. Soooo, you can share the excitement that this anime will bring you.

Have you watched monster anime like Fairy Tail and The Slayers? I know they’re quite crazy. These are the kinds of bad guys who can be scary but are usually fun to watch fight. Sometimes, monsters can really make you feel scared, but at the same time, watching them can be the most enjoyable thing… well, except for this next anime.
In Claymore, the setting is a medieval fantasy world that is being terrorized by evil monsters called Yoma. To fight these demons, half-Yoma entities are made. Civilization shuns these hybrids, called Claymores, because they have demonic auras.
Clare, the main character of the show, is a very strong woman whose expeditions are a lot darker than most anime. Her life has been filled with tragedy and bad luck. Everyone who wants to take D&D seriously wants among their initiatives to be like this. In this dark adventure, heroes with a lot of power fight against enemies that are really scary.

The virtual reality broom racing game wasn’t very good, but this anime deserves all the recognition it deserves. Not only is it a great show about many different kinds of women, but it also sets clear rules about how magic works right away. Without giving away too much, there’s only so much magic, so batteries are often used. This makes for a techno-fantasy setting.
But each character has special skills and abilities that could be called “classes.” Among the MCs, Sucy, loves poison and mushrooms so much that she might be a necromancer. Constanze is another character who seems like she could be an engineer or an artist.

Atsushi Okubo authored both Fire Force and Soul Eater. It’s about people who are good with weapons and fight bad people who are trying to eat souls. Furthermore, the firearms are people who change into weapons, as well as witches are often portrayed as bad guys.
Even though the show focuses a little more on developing characters, it still does a great job of giving each of its characters their own fighting style. It’s a great example of how to make a good story, and it’s also funny and entertaining.

In the same way, a Campaign can start out with a lot of promise. Everyone really enjoys playing their characters, and the quest was great and the enemies were epic. But then there’s a problem: it just won’t stop. The DM continues to add twists to keep the game going, but after a while, you all start to feel like you’re just going through the motions. Then, all of a sudden, the game is over.
Inuyasha is a very popular anime, and for a good reason. The main characters are very nice. All of these D&D classes are easy to recognize. Inuyasha is known as a fighter, Miroku as a monk, Kagome a ranger, and Sango a yet another ranger with a cool cat friend. The characters try to find the pieces of the mystical Shikon Jewel, which, when put together, can give its owner amazing powers. Along the way, they’ve to fight off a lot of demons, and many of them are tied to the characters in some way.
All of that sounds great, right? It’s true. But then it just keeps going. It doesn’t get anywhere till the last twenty or so episodes, when the whole story is wrapped up in a season that was made just about a couple of years just after the rest of the show. Even though each episode is fun on its own, a D&D player should already know what it’s like to go on with the same quest.

Given that it is set during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, fans may be confused by this recommendation, but the storyline is basically a hidden gem with a shifting party and a heavy emphasis on food. This kinda makes you feel so hungry.
Golden Kamuy excels in its capacity to utilize themes of found families with thrilling action and lovable individuals who sometimes make poor decisions.
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons will value the show’s capacity to replace every encounter with lore the most. From studying the Ainu towards Abashiri Prison as well as the personal lives of the individuals, the animation is filled with exquisite details. The show has recently begun airing episodes for its third season.

When talking about an Isekai that uses a video game set in the same universe as the fantasy world our heroes get stuck in, the first thing that comes to our mind is Log Horizon.
But when it comes to this idea, I really think that Log Horizon really is among the finest examples of how the story actually uses what the player knows about how the game works.
If you want to make an Isekai Dungeons and Dragons adventure, I think this is definitely among the best places to look for ideas.

Now, the story is starting to look more like a typical Dungeon and Dragons fantasy story. This next anime is an isekai about people who get trapped in a world they can also save with each of four famous weapons.
Although the party building isn’t very deep, the darker themes of Shield Hero’s world are very interesting. This actually adds spice to the story itself.
Even though there’s some parts of the first season that drag a bit, it still has very interesting takes on characters doing less important jobs, showing how an outage can be this good.

A dungeon crawl is an important part of every D&D campaign. The quests of this manhwa starts with a setting influenced by Arabian nights, and when we say Arab, among the famous Arab names are Alibaba and Aladdin. Well, these are actually the names of our MCs.
Like in the other anime we have here on our list, the characters’ classes are clear, just like they would have been in a campaign. It might be a fantastic way for both DMs and players to get ideas for campaigns or characters.

Maybe this is more like Game of Thrones, but if you’re a Dungeons & Dragons fan, then you will surely enjoy this anime. The world of this anime, which is based on Chinese mythology, is about how many different characters interact with different kingdoms fighting for control in a war-torn world. Youko, the girl from Japan who came to this world for unknown reasons, is the main character. But her story is not the only one. She is only a small part of the bigger picture.
Because of this, D&D players might feel like they know the world. Even though it uses symbols from the less well-known folktale (at least to people in the West), The Twelve Kingdoms shows that no one person changes the bigger picture of politics on their own. All of this is the outcome of how the many parts work together.
Dungeons & Dragons players are also part of a larger group. Even though there are players that feel like they are the MC, they know there are more things going on than just them. They can alter the whole world if they just play their games right.

This anime really is magnificent. It’s about a traveler who goes to visit each town and helps people with their problems.
It might not have a lot of action and fights, but it can still give a little spice of action and adventure. This show, on the other hand, has the feel of a smaller-scale adventure of which among the reasons why this anime is considered to be among the anime you should watch if you really love D&D.
It has a lot of Japanese mythology and cultures that you could use in your own entire construction, and it shows how rural Japan could be used as a setting. Pretty much like Dungeons and Dragons.

I definitely understand what you have in mind. Well, because, at first, it’s also my very first question. How could I choose a comedy anime over a bunch of great fantasy action stories?
Let’s be honest, D&D isn’t just about serious action and adventures. It’s a game played by a group of goofy friends who often agree to do silly things which somehow work out. I mean, who would play with people who get easily annoyed?
Well, one thing that you can not deny is that both KonoSuba and Dungeons & Dragons are both things we can say you’re not going to understand if you’re not going to play them.
I know the characters here are quite a joke, a Wizard who can only cast fireballs, a Goddess who was demoted and is now pretending to be a Cleric, a Fighter who likes to hurt himself and an isekai Rogue. It’s just an anime where you can somehow enjoy other people’s stupidity.

If you have watched Cowboy Bebop, then you will clearly notice its quick resemblance with Samurai Champloo. I mean not really a big ressemblance, I think it is just because they are authored by the same person. In some cases, they are both anime that should be watched if you’re really addicted to playing Dungeons and Dragons.
The characters in Samurai Champloo fight and argue with each other a lot, but in the end, they stick together for a reason.
The event that started the group’s journeys together seems like a perfect example of how a Dungeons & Dragons group might start with a joke and then have to deal with the consequences. Still, this show has so much fun and adventure that it’s hard not to endorse it.

You might think that this anime has nothing to do with this list, but I’ll show you that you’re wrong. However, after a lot of consideration about what the show is really about, I think that it has too much of the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons.
Starting with a sad backstory, we bring together our party, each of whom has their own quirks, special skills, and reasons for doing what they do. All of these things come together to put them in a fight with the big bad bad guy of the arc.
Demon Slayer is a great anime to watch. At the same time, D&D is a great game to play. It’s also the other one that makes great use of Japanese culture, which gives the demons powers and looks that aren’t usually seen in western stories.

The fact that Berserk is an anime that is full of darkness should be made clear right away. When it talks about darker things, it doesn’t steer away or hold back. You probably shouldn’t watch it if you’re easily scared and can’t handle some harsh things.
Also, the 2016 series isn’t very good, so you shouldn’t watch it either. Guts is a main character who is very interesting. His journey through the series is something we can say is very personal and at times very hard. He has to deal with a lot.
All of that said, you should watch it if you want to see a world that is just as messed up as the Dark Souls games, which were influenced by the Berserk series, so it makes sense.

Not mentioning this anime on this list would be the greatest betrayal I could do. Good thing, I am not in the mood of becoming Itachi to this clan tho.
This anime is known primarily for its crazy world building and intense emotional moments. With how much emotion is placed into the battle scenes, Straw Hat pirates and the strange islands that our main characters have visited, it feels like a group of friends have been playing in this world for decades. Also, as a person who really loves pirates and sea adventures, pirate expeditions are really a big plus for me.
I know it’s not easy to just say that you should watch One Piece then continue with your life, but well, because of life itself, you can’t just end your episodes by watching a thousand… and I also doubt it’s ending anytime soon.

This anime shows a quick resemblance with Game of Thrones. Do they even have the same blood? Figuratively… I am sure they really are a great family together.
This anime doesn’t care how important a character is to the plot or how much fans like him or her. This is about a space war, which is serious, and explosions in space don’t make noise, okay?
The series actually shows almost perfectly how to make characters with clear goals and subtleties that make them seem real. Anime, which happened to come after it, was definitely influenced by the show, so why not take ideas for plots and characters from it?

Okay, call it beginner level or just basic. That’ll make my day. I’ll fight you until the end of time to keep this anime among the top spots.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a great example of a well-made campaign with an intriguing story and twists, enjoyable characters, and a very well-developed world. Alchemy’s magic system is so flexible that it can be used with all kinds of different classes.
As well, its world is filled with different cultures, which makes it easy for people from all kinds of backgrounds to get along. If you’re interested in Dungeons & Dragons, you should watch this show so you don’t have to listen to people talk about it for hours, especially if you like well-written and original fantasy with a good story.

This could be among the best Dungeons & Dragons anime made up to this point. It has characters from different classes, which is a direct reference to D&D lore. This anime is also a beautiful, definitive version of animation from the time. In fact, because both technology and animation have changed, it looks much better than some modern anime.
But fans of Dungeons & Dragons will understand that the classes and monsters are not copied word for word into a new world with its own history. When we say “own history,” we do not actually mean hearsay, hoax or gossip, we actually mean the factual ones.
Dragons also seem like huge, magical creatures in this anime. Do you know what else is huge? It’s my love for this anime!

Cowboy Bebop is a very exciting adventure story, even though it doesn’t follow the traditional D&D rules of fantasy epics with magic and swords. But this surely deserves among the top spots of the most recommended anime if you really love Dungeons & Dragons.
The characters in this anime are perfect for a group of people who want to go on adventures, travel to different places, take jobs, and try to make money.
And it’s clear that each character’s stories, as it is shown in the story’s arcs, could fit into any fantasy world. The distinction between fantasy world and the real world really makes this anime among the best anime to watch if you’re a D&D fan.
With all the life this show has to offer, I suggest watching it at your own pace and trying to take in some details as well as story ideas if you’re the Dungeon Master.
