Rent A Girlfriend is the kind of romance anime that has a love-hate relationship with its fans. While many fans are not very fond of its storyline, there are many who can’t seem to shake off the feeling this anime gives them. To be honest, if we ignore Kazuya’s trashy personality, the rest of the characters aren’t really bad and the storyline is pretty good and unique as well.

1. Kazuya Kinoshita
Kazuya is very indecisive. He ends up confusing himself as well as others around him. He’s extremely nervous around Chizuru but likes her company. This is why he keeps on renting her every week. At first, he had to rent Chizuru out because his friends and grandmother ended up knowing about her. He had to lie to them in order to keep his relationship with Chizuru a secret. However, later, when he got to know about
Chizuru’s struggles he started renting her out only to help her. But deep down, he was cherishing his time with her. Despite his timidity, Kazuya is a very empathetic and helpful guy who is willing to go out of his way in order to help others who are close to him. He’s also very persistent and determined, never giving up easily.
2. Chizuru Ichinose/Mizuhara
Chizuru is a Literature student at Nerima University as well as a Rental Girlfriend. She goes by the name Chizuru Mizuhara as her Rental Girlfriend Persona. Her original name is Chizuru Ichinose. Not a lot of people know about Chizuru being a Rental Girlfriend and she had concealed herself well in her university. However, her secret was revealed to other fellow Rental Girlfriends including Sumi and Ruka.
As a Rental Girlfriend, Chizuru is a very kind and gentle girl who treats her clients with love. Even though it’s all fake, her clients are very satisfied with her. She’s very serious about her job as a Rental Girlfriend and doesn’t want to mess it up because it’s the only thing that could get her closer to her dream of becoming an actress.
Chizuru’s original personality is a little bolder than her work personality. She tends to be irritated easily and isn’t very patient. She’s very sensitive about her identity being revealed and often threatens Kazuya to stay quiet.
Though Chizuru appears to be a strong lady, she’s very weak according to her grandma. She just pretends to be strong.
Overall, Chizuru is a very kind-hearted girl who feels for others. She might appear to be selfish at times but in reality, she’s very selfless. She might not show it but she’s slowly falling for Kazuya as well.
3. Mami Nanami
Mami Nanami is also a student at Nerima University and is Kazuya’s ex-girlfriend. She broke up with Kazuya in a very casual way, leaving him all depressed. Mami appears to be very friendly and easygoing when she’s with people. However, she has a twisted personality that is far from being friendly and cheerful.
She seems to be jealous of Kazuya getting a new girlfriend. Even though she doesn’t show it in front of Kazuya, it still bothers her and she’s adamant about making them break up. She thinks that Kazuya tried to get back at her for dumping him and that is a lethal attack on her ego. We can’t really say anything about her jealousy whether it stems from her feelings for Kazuya or she just wants him to be unhappy out of spite.
She tried to manipulate Kazuya, knowing very well that Kazuya still possesses romantic feelings towards her. She’s confident in her abilityy to manipulate anyone. After she gets to know about Chizuru’s secret of being a rental girlfriend, she’s relieved to some extent but she still wants to intervene between the two, not wanting to let Kazuya be in a relationship with anyone.

4. Ruka Sarashina
Ruka Sarashina is a high school student as well as a Rental Girlfriend. She falls in love with Kazuya because he makes her heart beat faster. As her heartbeat is slower than an average person’s, she wants someone to make her heart beat faster and Kazuya does exactly that.
Ruka is a very cheerful and passionate girl. She’s also very possessive when it comes to Kazuya. She never gives up and later succeeds in making Kazuya her boyfriend. Although it was not a long-term relationship, she agreed to it. Ruka is very pushy and stubborn, not listening to others and doing whatever she likes. However, Ruka acts very mature at times. She accepts her flaws and works to make herself better. She also gets very patient which is very unlikely of her.
5. Sumi Sakurasawa
Sumi Sakurasawa is a college student and a part-time Rental Girlfriend. She’s extremely shy and has communication problems. She’s training under Chizuru to become the perfect girlfriend and Chizuru introduces her to Kazuya. Kazuya thinks that her bashful nature is very adorable but people around her could barely hear her because of her frail voice.
Despite her being timid and unconfident, Sumi is ready to push herself to be better than before. She’s working on her communication with others and looks up to Chizuru. Sumi is also prone to overthinking just like every other introvert. Overall, Sumi is a very sweet and soft-spoken girl (maybe a little too soft-spoken).
