Yu Yu Hakusho - Preface

Penned and pictured by Yoshihiro Togashi, Yu Yu Hakusho is a Japanese manga series. The story is built around an unruly teenager, Yusuke Urameshi. He loses his own life in a car accident while trying to save a child’s life. His spirit is then presented to the King of the Underworld, Enma Daio.
The king grants the teenager an opportunity to reincarnate on the condition to become a “Spirit Detective” and handle situations involving ghosts and demons.
Noticing its popularity, Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine turned the manga into a back to back series which continued till July 1994. Later on, it was published in a monthly magazine. Not only that, Shueisha’s Jump Comics printed these on paper which resulted in 18 tankobon volumes during a period from April 22, 1992, to May 17, 1994.
Later on, the manga was adapted into an anime television series produced by Fuji Television, YuYu Hakusho. It broadcasted a total of 114 episodes starting on October 12, 1992 across Japan and continued till October 26, 2018.
The Plot

An anime filled with adventure, the series focuses on Yusuke Uramesh, a name synonymous with street scuffle. His alcoholic teenage mother gives him up way too soon.
Whether useful or not, he has a schedule to visit the guidance counsellor’s office. Quite confused about what to do with his life, he cannot decide if he wants to team up with other errants or follow the counsellor’s advice.
Contrary to his personality, he loses his life in an accident while trying to save a child from a speeding car. An underworld ferrywoman, Botan, steers his spirit to the Underworld. There, to his disappointment, he is informed about the futility of his act of valour. The child was destined to survive the accident. In fact, he would have received fewer bruises if Yusuke Uramesh had not intercepted the natural order of the events.
Hereafter he was not ready for Yusuke’s untimely death. Thus, he has to pass through numerous tests to prove his worth and be eventually reincarnated. There he is transmigrated into a fourteen-year-old child. Yusuke is given a second chance on life as a Spirit Detective. His job is to investigate and resolve cases concerning demons and ghosts with the help of his friends from both worlds.
Media

Let’s talk a bit about the media in the anime. There are a total of 32 DVD compilations made for the four sagas of this anime. Every box contains the entire collection of episodes of a single saga. So, if you got all four boxes, then congratulations, you have the entire show!
Coming towards the music element, it is produced and composed by none other than Yusuke Honma. Yu Yu Hakusho has one opening song, “Hohoemi no Bakudan”. On the other hand, it has 5 closing theme songs.
The soundtracks of Yu Yu Hakusho have not received immense popularity, but it has gotten to a point where people now recognize whose song this is.
Yu yu Hakusho Fillers

People often presume that fillers are just a waste of time. Well, this statement may be true to some extent. However, I can prove this statement to be nothing but a hoax!
So, where should we begin? Oh, and before we start, I am going to mention a few different anime and manga just for reference so you can understand it better too.
Dragon Ball Z and Naruto are two great examples of fillers not being boring. I mean, in Naruto’s fillers there was always something going on. Even when it was not connected to the original story, you felt the growth of the characters. Filler episodes in the anime are not directly connected with the authentic story written for the manga but these are produced to increase the interest level in the actual story of the anime.
Usually, the filler episodes seem to stand alone but they interconnect the ends and details. They also highlight and develop incidents and characters. The extended section of Yu Yu Hakusho fillers and arcs consists of four episodes. Built around competitions between the devils, it is an enthralling watch that keeps the viewer engaged.

Though, these are not as impressively produced as the canon episodes.
The filler episodes are also loved by the fans for the sake of getting more detail.Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic Shonen series with a minimal ratio of fillers, ONLY 4% out of 114 episodes.
So, merely 5 Yu Yu Hakusho episodes are fillers in all. The fillers serve an important purpose in an anime. They enhance the significance of the story. Moreover, as an anime comes to an end, they serve the purpose of saying a fitting au revoir to the role players.
Amazed by the Yu Yu Hakusho fillers, the followers feel that these fillers are crucial and not to be missed. There is no comic relief or needless romantic chunks.
The fillers are essential to the plot. Interesting and enjoyable are two adjectives we can use to describe each of the filler episodes, but, undeniably the The Demon Tournament Begins stands on top of the list.
Genre

People often watch things that inspire them to do good or things that they can relate to. The main character Yusuke is a relatable character who goes through the same trauma, adventure, and life that people can relate to. We often feel like we are always changing.
Being static is not a good option in my opinion. If we keep on changing, then we can actually see faults in our past selves and become better. Anyways, I am not going to dive deep into philosophy so let’s get on with the genre now. The main theme of this anime is dominantly rooted in martial arts, action, escapades, and the supernatural.
The progression of events is fascinating to watch and certainly a source of motivation for children. The leading protagonist, Yusuke, only a young teenage boy, experiences an abrupt transformation of character.
Being reborn to deal with a heavy responsibility. He decides to perform a deed of goodwill that CHANGES his life for good.
Motivation

The anime reflects the pronounced influence of the writer’s passion and curiosity for magical powers and frightful movies. The plot is also spiced up by traces of Buddhist mythology. The manga has been exceptionally adapted into an anime. The fans of Yu Yu Hakusho all around the world are in awe of it. The anime clearly illustrates the underworld secrets, devils, etc.
Creation

The manga writing started in November 1990. However, it was not completed until July 1994. Writing this manga took its own sweet time. A total of 4 years. Soon after the manga had been written, its anime adaptation started. The manga began in 1990 and the anime started in 1992.
Awards

In a short time, Yu Yu Hakusho earned a beaming number of followers. More than forty-five million copies were sold in Japan, more copies were then sold worldwide. It earned many awards as well, Shonen jump manga won the valuable Shogakukan Manga prize.
Yu Yu Hakusho Filler Episodes
1. Demon World Tournament (Episode 107)

Foreseeing The All-Out War ensuing after the death of Raizen, one of the three great powers of Demon World, Yusuke Urameshi designed the Demon world tournament as an alternative to war.
The winner of the tournament acquires autocracy over Demon World and owns the right to do whatever he/she desires for a span of three years.
Makai hears about the tournament in a short span. However, Yusuke and Mukuro agree when Yomi suggests that the tournament should start after 100 days of its announcement. A great number of demons sign up to participate in the tournament. After a populated preliminary round, the winners were awarded special rings to be worn around their necks. Removal of the rings determined to defeat.
Multiple rounds were monitored closely but Yoko Kurama was able to manoeuvre the roots during his match with Shigure. This was because he had planted a lot of the trees many thousands of years before the time of the tournament.

Thinking that Rui is not an honourable match for him, Kurama disagrees with Raizen’s choice to engage Rui to arrange the Dark Tournament instead of him. Rui is a local tournament promoter. However, Kurama finally decides to participate after observing the toughness levels of several of his friends competing in the contest.
Mitarai is facing Abe in battle in the third round of the tournament as the episode opens. Mitarai is overpowering his rival despite failing to employ any of his tricks. Nevertheless, taking advantage of a cleverly created inconspicuous protective layer between him and Mitrai,
Abe manages to crack his defence. Consequently, the tables turn in his favour and he gains control over his foe in the battle. A forceful attack leaves Mitarai seriously injured. At this point, Kurama travels across space to intervene, and dares Abe to meet his match on the battlefield. When compared with the time of their last confrontation, it appears that Kurama has acquired considerable strength. Not feeling threatened at all, Abe decides to face Kurama and is able to evade his distinctive and most powerful attack. No technique seems to work, in fact, both opponents are hurt.
It is an adventure ride that keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. It has no context or foreshadowing other than the establishing strength of the monsters whom Rui summoned to the tournament. Moreover, it establishes Mitrai’s weakness through his encounter with Abe. Finally, Kurama’s challenge to Abe and his Abe’s defeat needed to be highlighted exclusively.
2. Farewell, Kurama (Episode 108)

A fine trained demon, Shigure, is dispatched to eliminate Kurama. Shigure is an expert at using sorcery and sharp weapons of all kinds. He is also determined to do anything to defeat Kurama.
Despite Shigure’s expertise, Kurama is dominating. Even so, he has no desire to do away with Shigure; he cannot see himself killing even a demon. He manages to muster all his courage against Shigure and bring him under control.
Kurama goes back to his stepfather. And then finally get a job over there. After taking part in a tournament for so long, finally it was time for him to rest. Now, Kurama had the opportunity.
The tournament, of course, takes its fair share of trauma and burden on everyone around it. Kurama can finally live the life of a normal human being. He always wanted that. He was the one who told others that finally he can do what he always dreamed of.

That dream was finally normal. No fighting, no adventure, and certainly no tournaments.
However, all his other friends decided against it. They wanted to stay in the same place and continue doing what they always did. They kept enjoying it. But as you all know, everyone has their limits. And sadly, Kurama reached his limit. He left Makai and started living elsewhere.
He then started working with his stepfather in his company.
This filler episode broadcasted around episodes 107 and 108 was produced to show Kurama’s detailed character development. This was while he experienced inner conflicts about his feelings about being granted a chance to start anew as a human. This also included his clashing thoughts if it is lawful for him to put an end to human life or devils who intimidate others’ existence.
It foreshadows Kurama’s character development, coming to terms with his mortal form and strained relationship with Hiei.
3. Love and War (Episode 109)

The first scene of this episode shows Mukuro and Hiei pitched against each other. They are strong competitors as they are an equal match for each other in a battle when it comes to strength and skill.
After the opening scene, the episode takes us back in time when Mukuro is preparing for combat. He has no desire to hold back but win. The tough training that he commits himself to surely testifies his ambition to defeat his opponent.
Both the combatants proved to be the toughest test for each other on the occasion of the fight. It is a display of equivalent prowess and mastery fighting skills. Steered by the passion to win, both attack one another fiercely. During a fierce fight, Mukuro receives wounds, fractures and injuries. Disregarding all pain and damage to his body, he continues to fight.

Then, Hiei snaps chains encasing Mukuro’s body from his previous life. This intensifies the fight further and puts Mukuro beside himself. He desperately puts together all his energy and tricks together in vain as he still fails to strike Hiei back successfully.
This episode stands alone as a twist of events in the context of the series offering something extra about Mukuro’s character. Hiei succeeds in defeating Mukuro and shattering his chains from his past.
Unable to heal from the damage, Mukuro is left feeble and listless. Out of several details, the most compelling detail is that the episode displays the extent to which Hiei has transformed along the progression of the series. Initially, he was a self-centred evil. Then, he transformed into a caring and peaceful person.
Mukuro had transformed enough to be prepared to fight someone’s war. He was willing to put himself on the line for everyone besides himself, and face danger to support. At the same time viewers can see the strength Hiei acquired with the passing time.
4. Closure (Episode 111)

The Makai Tournament finally reaches its end in this episode. It shows the last round of the Tournament. A huge fight between Yusuke and Yomi begins to retain their own kingly status and stature in the closing round of the Makai Tournament.
Yusuke and Yomi have to fight each other in the Makai Tournament. When he hears about his friends’ treachery, he finally realizes that he was betrayed. But, we all know Yomi is hard as a nail and easily could have gotten the better of Yusuke if Hiei had not intervened and tried to kill him.
The fierce combat leaves Yusuke out of his senses while Yomi can hardly stand on his feet. There is no winner till the end of the episode. It is not a regular episode rather a filler episode. The Makai Tournament is a separate entity and is not included in the plan of the main series.
Though, the events can relate to the events of the upcoming episode number 112. In case you miss the episode, you do not need to worry about losing anything significant from the story overall. All the happenings that occur in this episode are somehow covered in the future episodes which make this absolutely irrelevant to the canon episodes. So basically, what I am trying to say is that even if you skip this episode entirely you will not miss anything.
5. All or Nothing (Episode 114)

Divided into two groups, a set of high schoolers explore a deserted mannequin factory allegedly jinxed by the spirit of a girl. While one group scouts the building, the other have to stay at their positions and wait for safekeeping and guarding.
Suddenly, an evil apparition starts attacking, leading to a chaotic situation. Group one is spooked enough to forget their friend and run for their lives. The beta group also fails when they attempt to be brave and confront the demon. Finally, everyone runs off.
At the same time, Kurama is making his way home with Hiei and suddenly they notice Maya coming in their direction. Hiei briskly takes cover behind Kurama to avoid being detected. Kurama asks Maya to not visit her home that night because he needed to be home with his sick mother.

She makes a deal with Kurama to take care of his mother while he can stay out that night. Hiei doubts that Yatsude could be alive after seven years had gone by since he had appeared and tells Kurama not to worry, because there has been no sign or evidence to make them lose sleep.
Impressed with her concern about the situation, Kurama appreciates Hiei. On the same night, Kurama sits alone in the park in his own thoughts while Hiei comes a second time. She is still on the lookout for Yatsude. He assures Hiei that he has searched thoroughly multiple times and found nothing.
Exhausted, Kurama decides to terminate the search and go home. Hiei also reciprocates his feelings and actions. He decides to stop fretting, rest and sleep peacefully at home.
It is another filler episode but it offers important details to take the story further and put the ends together. Though nothing extraordinary happens in the episode, it makes the flow smooth.
Conclusion

The manga received rightly deserved appreciable and noticeable attention. It offers a vigorous world of action and adventure. Drama, action, thriller, adventure, and excitement are few predominant features that make the manga and anime stand out.
I am going to be totally honest with you here. I am going to highly recommend you watch this show because it is one of the shortest animes and has less chapters to read as well.
You can actually finish it in time and have fun while doing so. Plus, the best part about this is that it only contains 4 percent fillers. 114 episodes and so little fillers? That is absolutely a dream come true for all anime fans.
