Are you a fan of Kamen Rider whose armor transforms to eliminate enemies in a super cool way? Or do you like to read Greek Gods & Goddesses and their legends? Both of those are cool, right? But what if you can transform into a SUPER COOL KNIGHT by having the power of your ZODIAC Constellation and then fight against Greek Myths and Legends?! That would be EPIC!

If you’re into defying legends, you might want to get into this one. Let’s all welcome, SAINT SEIYA: Zodiac Knights where the protagonists get to wear their sacred armors called “Cloths” after the conditions are met & accepted by their intended protector (Zodiac Constellations).

It’s a classic story about a young orphan boy from the slums who fights his way to become the hero. With the help of his foes at first, then becoming his friends, they together fought for justice and defended their goddess, Athena. Using their treasured sacred ‘cloths’ imbued with the cosmo power of a Zodiac constellation.

THE STORY
The main protagonist of the show is Seiya, one of the five chosen SAINTS (Knights) to defend their goddess, Athena—the goddess of wisdom and war. Their opponents are other myths and legends of Greek history. If you’re like me that is into Greek history then, you would like to watch this anime.
Seiya is the young orphan forced to go into a Greek Sanctuary just to obtain ‘the bronze cloth of Pegasus,’ (you know? the winged horse of Perseus in the Greek legends? Yeah, who knew Perseus’ winged horse wears a cloth right?).
Well, anyways as the story goes, as Seiya awakened his “Cosmo”, which is their own way of naming ‘inner peace’ from Kung Fu Panda, if you know what I mean. The only difference is their Cosmo is from the Big Bang of the universe and our inner peace is gained thru sleeping all day and eating a lot.
Back to Seiya’s story, while Seiya was enjoying his new found shining, shimmering armor, his sister disappeared. Desperate to find his sister, Seiya made a deal with Saori Kido, she’s the granddaughter of Mitsumasa Kido (the one who trained Seiya and other orphans to fight). If Seiya would win the Galaxian wars, then Saori will help Seiya to look for his older sister.
Why would they be joining the tournament you ask? It’s because the prize of the said tournament is the Sagittarius Gold Cloth. The more Zodiac constellations you have, the more powerful you can be. (How I wish there was real life clothing like that).
In the Galaxian wars, he battled and befriended other bronze saints, like Shun (Andromeda), Shiryu (Dragon) & Hyoga (Cygnus). At first, Seiya was really unwilling to join the Galaxian wars for he just wanted to be reunited with his older sister. But later, changed his mind and joined the tournament as well.
Their ‘sacred cloths’ or armors depict the distinct feature of the constellation they are imbued with. For example, Seiya’s constellation is Pegasus, Perseus’ winged horse. So his clothes have a horse helmet and silver armor for his chest, arms and legs.
For Shiryu the Dragon, he has his Dragon armor. Hyoga Cygnus has the Swan armor. For Shun Andromeda, the cosmic design, and for Ikki the Phoenix armor. It’s as simple as that, but a total wrecking power those armor brings.
But while the tournament is ongoing, like Seiya and his fellow orphan friends are fighting to have that golden cloth. An outsider interrupts their battle who happens to be the older brother of one of the fighters, Ikki. He was the Phoenix Bronze Saint, who had a horrible grudge against Saori’s grandfather.
With the power of friendship, Seiya and the other Saints defeated Ikki. Of course they would defeat him, they’re the protagonists and by the way, Ikki would soon be part of their allied force. Why? Because everyone deserves a second chance, right?
Now Seiya thought that the danger had been averted, but just like us who after a long tiring day, we let our guards down and then got overwhelmed with much bigger tasks. Now they face other stronger Saints sent by the Pope who happens to be the Gold Saint, Gemini.
Have I forgotten to mention that each saint was ranked? Bronze being the lowest, then Silver and the strongest being the Gold Saint. And just like any humble hero, Seiya and his friends are Bronze Saints who overcome their weaknesses thru defeating higher ranking saints. Whew! Truly the power of friendship and love is really unfathomable, right?
After the victory they had gained in defeating the Silver Saints, they soon learned that Saori was the reincarnation of their Goddess Athena. That’s why the Pope tried to kill her. But with the Sagittarius Gold Saint, Aiolos help, Saori was protected.
Knowing the whole truth of her identity, Saori along with Seiya and the rest of the bronze knights went into the temple sanctuary to find and defeat the Pope. That’s where Saori got deeply wounded by a Silver Saint arrow. (What kind of safeguarding did the bronze knights do).
Anyways, to heal Saori they really need to find the Pope hoping he could heal her. But for them to find the Pope they had to go through twelve temples and defeat each and one of the Golden Saints. Well that’s that, risking down one’s life for your friend is what true friends are.
By their great tenacity, friendship and care for each other, they have defeated the twelve gold saints of Athena. And so they went far deeper into the temple facing other enemies. Much to their surprise seeing the person in charge of the temple was the Gold Saint Gemini-Saga.

With their last strength, they combine their Cosmos and use Athena’s statue to heal Saori. With that, Saga came to his senses as a Saint of Athena. Realizing what he’s done, he committed suicide.
Saga somehow has split personality, one side loyal to Athena and the other side craves power. It’s identified by his hair changing color from blue to gray. And they communicate between themselves. Now that’s crazy, imagine having two people arguing in your body.
Greed, power, and glory can really at times blind us from what truly is more important to us. There are much more important things to enjoy about Saga, like food, sleeping & watching anime.
After the battle with the Gold Zodiac Saints, a new challenge came to our brave heroes: The Olympian Gods. Well, you know the likes of Zeus? The king of the gods? Apollos? The Sun God?
The Second Arc starts with the battle against the reincarnation of Poseidon, Julian Solo. A man who loves water so much that he intends to flood the whole world. Here, Saori was again the damsel in distress, to be made as an offering to the sea and be rescued by her Saints.
And being the Chivalrous Knights, Seiya and his friends went into enemy lines to rescue Saori. Defeating every enemy they encounter and alas! A face off with Julian, the reincarnation of Poseidon. But little did they know that the true villain of this arc is the twin brother of the Gold Saint Gemini, Kanon.
It was Kanon who had manipulated Julian all along, to take revenge on his twin brother. With Saori being saved by Seiya, they altogether sealed Poseidon’s soul within an ancient jug that imprisons even gods. I wonder if that jug can be found on ebay or amazon.
Continuing the war against the Olympian gods. Comes the third and last arc of the Saint Seiya series, which is their battle against the god of the underworld himself, Hades. Uh huh, that’s right you know the end is coming when Hades comes out.
In this battle, Hades revived the Gold Saints that were defeated before and along with the strong pope and 108 specters. Yet our mighty heroes defended their own along with their strength and power. Against all odds they did what they did and defeated as many as they could.
With their backs on the ropes they made their final move, sacrificing the person they have been protecting ever since the beginning. Yup, I know right? What are they thinking, sacrificing their VIP? Well, believe it or not this is the only way that they can go into Hades’ domain, by means of death.
So, they went ahead of their plan and finally caught Hades face to face. Being in the domain of the enemy, greatly at a disadvantage, they managed to outwit Hades with the help of the souls of the Gold Saints they fought before. Hades then made a final attack and here’s where our main protagonist jumps for the bullet and saves the day for everyone before finally defeating Hades.

Seiya and his allies fought other mythological creatures & figures too. Like Hermes the messengers of the gods. Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and Ares the god of war.
And not only Greek legends but Masami even included some Norse mythology & figures. Like the wolf Fenrir, Odin’s robe & Freya, and legendary sword Excalibur from England’s famous ruler, King Arthur.
REVIEW
By the way, ‘The Saint Seiya Series’ was written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada. He also made Ring ni kakero, Fuma no Kojiro and Bit X. His creations really show the characteristics of what a “real man” should be.
Courageous, valiant, selfless, heroic, patriot and willing to sacrifice himself for the good of others. Wow! I don’t know if any man would be like that nowadays. Shame on us guys! If Seiya would be here we could hear him saying “Be a real man and fight!”
The Saint Seiya Series were serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump back in 1986 to 1990. It was a very famous series back then. Where young guys would really think the cosmos can really give us power like Seiya and his friends. I mean, who wouldn’t like to have those kinds of shining, shimmering, glorious armors right?
The episode that really stood out for me is Saint Seiya’s battle through the twelve temples guarded by the twelve Gold Saints of Athena. I mean it was so cool! Fighting & defeating the strongest opponents by just believing in yourself and of course with the power from your own constellation.
The animation is also a classic along with the classic anime rock as their OST.
It aired for three years from 1986 to 1989 on national television. Later continued with three original video animations released from 2002 to 2008. With a total of 114 episodes, many young guns were in a hurry from school just to watch and copy the moves of the Saints in the series. Well, at least, we who have grown watching the series know how to be valiant protecting others, right?
CONCLUSION
Welp! That’s a lot of filler HAHAHA! But anyways, it’s really up to you if you’d want to watch because duh! No one’s insisting. Kidding aside, I’ve always thought that fillers are like some sort of refreshing episodes. It’s usually great to watch especially if the anime has a heavy theme in it. But nonetheless, what matters most is you get to enjoy this masterpiece. See ya on the next blog, byieee!
