Do you guys ever just want to leave your hometown and start a new life? Well, we all do at times. Anyways, our MC Keiichi Maebara left his hometown and started a new life at a new village called Hinamizawa where he became good friends with Rena, Mion, Satoko, Rika. But the only thing that awaits him in the new village is DARKNESS! What type of darkness are we talking about here? We’ll find out soon enough.

PLOT

The story of Higurashi When They Cry takes place in a peculiar village of Hinamizawa where a newbie named Keiichi Maebara moved in. He is clueless of what type of mysteries shroud this village. Keiichi becomes friends with Mion, Shion, Rena, Rika, and Satoko. These people are basically Keiichi’s classmates. 

Since the famous festival called Watanagashi is going to take place soon, our boy is about to come across a darkly mysterious event. Keiichi learned that from 1979 – 1982, one villager would die and the other one would disappear. This series of unknown events keep taking place and all the superstitious villagers  call this “Oyashiro’s Curse”. Who is Oyashiro? Well, he’s a local deity. 

As the story progresses, the police come across another mysterious act of a freelance photographer named Jiro Tomitake tearing his throat out with his hands. Dark enough? They also come across one burnt body. It’s so weird how people of this village keep dying while the reason behind it is unknown. 

Now is the time for Keiichi to step up and help investigate this case along with his friends. Since they’re trying something risky they will have to face the consequences. As they dwelled  in such a big thing, they faced rage and paranoia. In some parts of the story, Rika’s body has been found inside the family shrine and on the very same day a swamp gas wiped out the Village’s population. 

But there’s some mystery that hasn’t  unfolded yet. What is it? Well, there’s the concept of alternate reality. Thus, Rika tried to save her friends but failed to do so. Since Rika has been the priestess of the Shrine, she can communicate with different spirits including Hanyu. Spirit Hanyu served as an illustration for Oyashiro. Whenever Rika died, Hanyu would give her another reality. WOAH! This is getting intense! Isn’t it? However, whenever she travels to some other reality, she has no memories of her previous life or the reason behind her death. 

After a while, it was learned that there’s a mysterious parasite in this village that causes the Hinamizawa Syndrome which results in delusion, paranoia, and homicidal rage. This disease is partly responsible for the increasing  number of murders in history. Is this disease for real or is someone covering up their murders? This anime gives you mysteries one after another to unfold. If you like dark, suspense, thriller, and horror anime, congratulations! You have found the perfect pick for you! The characters are really interesting too since they have unique personalities.

Similarly, many more events take place in the story. But of course, I won’t spoil the story anymore. If you really want to find out the reason behind the mysterious deaths in Hinamizawa. Watch Higurashi: When They Cry and then you will know!
