High School DxD Filler List
I warn you! If you are planning to watch this series, you have to know a little annoying detail. The anime contains some filler episodes. If you don’t know what this means, I’ll explain it to you. A filler episode is one in which nothing relevant happens in terms of the main plot or the character development. It can be used to keep the anime adaptation from catching up to the manga counterpart, to elaborate elements from the storyline or to add some fanservice, humor or adventure. It can be considered as a standalone episode. If you want to enjoy the main storyline without distractions or interruptions, you can totally skip it.

Note: The last season of High School DxD has had a change of production studio. The new studio has opted for a character design much more similar to those present in the light novel and manga. Also, High School DxD Hero contains an episode 0, a summarizing episode in which last season’s ending was changed, making it more similar to the light novel version. Watch it if you want to see what has changed in the plot!
As I wrote before, there are also several OVAs and special episodes of High School DxD. Here is the list!
Note: Make sure you have watched the canon episodes before watching these ones. There could be some spoilers from the main plot, so pay attention!
High School DxD Background

High School DxD, ハイスクールD×D in Japanese, is a popular franchise made up of light novel, manga and anime series. All started from a light novel that was the result of the collaboration between the author and writer, Ichiei Ishibumi, and the illustrator, Miyama-Zero. It was serialized in Shobo Fujimi’s Dragon Magazine (Tokyo Ravens, Date a Live, Hitsugi no Chaika) from September 2008 to February 2020, and later published in 25 volumes by Fujimi Fantasia Bunko. Yen Press took care of the English version.
The manga adaptation written and illustrated by Mishima Hiroji was serialized first by Dragon Magazine and later by Monthly Dragon Age (Date a Live, Trinity Seven) from July 2010 to April 2018. The 11 volumes were once again published by Yen Press.
TNK (School Days) made an anime adaptation, that was broadcasted in Japan from January to March 2012, and that was licensed by Funimation in the United States, by Manga Entertainment in the United Kingdom and by Madman Entertainment in Australia.

The series had several sequels: the second season, High School DxD New (ハイスクールD×D NEW) aired from July to September 2013; the third season, High School DxD BorN (ハイスクールD×D BorN) aired from April to June 2015; the fourth season, High School DxD Hero (ハイスクールD×D Hero) aired from April to July 2018, but, unlike its prequels, this series was made by Passione studio (Citrus, Higurashi: When they cry). In total, the anime series has 48 episodes. Also, there are several OVAs and specials and two games (one for Nintendo DS and the other for PlayStation Vita) that are part of the franchise.
High School DxD is a good product not only for this genre’s fans, but also for who is looking for a well-written plot and exciting fight scenes. The anime manages to offer the right mix of romance and combat moments, both perfectly balanced to make the watch fun, thrilling and smooth. To frame all of this, there is a subtle veil of irony, created by ambiguous coincidences and the twisted mind of the main character.

Combining the scenes of tension with a touch of stupidity on the part of the protagonist is really funny and hilarious. This is not the classic anime to be seen only for the romantic moments with beautiful girls and with little or no originality.
Indeed, it is a series capable of never making you bored while watching the various episodes and to make you very fond of the characters, which appear in a very “natural” way. They have unique and fascinating characteristics; some of them show a hint of mystery due to their secret past and hidden sides.
The graphic of the series is high-quality and thanks to this additional element, the anime manages to rise to an even greater level. The colors are not too bright, but, in some ways, they shine according to the situation. What about Rias Gremory’s blood red hair? This is a small example of how colors are very important to highlight and bring some characters to the fore.
The music is very good, and the Japanese dubbing is also of excellent workmanship, with appropriate voices and more than efficient dubbers. To make an example, the main character is voiced by Kaji Yūki, the amazing voice actor famous for important roles, such as Attack on Titans’ Eren Jaeger or My Hero Academia’s Todoroki Shōto.
High School DxD Story Arcs
1. Red Dragon Emperor's Awakening (Episodes 1-12)

Adaptation of volumes 1-2 of the light novel. The story follows Hyōdō Issei, a sly and lewd high school student who is killed by a girl on his first ever date. Issei reincarnates as a demon and from that day on becomes the servant of Rias Gremory, a high-ranking demon who is also the most beautiful girl on campus. From this moment on, Issei’s life changes radically because he finds himself involved in a situation clearly bigger than him and very complicated. Although he is determined to be useful and to support as much as possible the beautiful Rias, he is nothing more than a pawn with great potential, but expendable at any time.
Note: You can peacefully watch the entire episodes. No fillers here.
2. Birth of the Breast Dragon Emperor (Episodes 13-27)

Adaptation of volumes 3-6 of the light novel. New problems are about to hit Issei. While the Gremory house is at Issei’s home, Kiba notices a photo of the young protagonist together with a young girl. In the background of the photo there is a sword, which makes Kiba relive memories of his past. The sword in question is apparently one of the 7 holy swords. What connection does Kiba have with these swords? Meanwhile, Issei’s red dragon, Ddraig, senses the presence of an old rival, the white dragon Albion.
Note: No fillers here either!
3. The Heroic Oppai Dragon (Episodes 28-48)

Adaptation of the volumes 7-10 of the light novel. Issei continues to have recurring dreams of the deceptive actions of his first girlfriend, Raynare, which lead him to question the girls around him. The summer holidays are coming and the members of the Gremory house are invited by Rias to spend the holidays at her home in the underworld.
Once they arrive at their destination, the group is attacked by a dragon, Tannin, who reveals to our protagonists that the surprise attack was designed by Azazel and Rias to determine the best type of formation to use in battle. The following day Azazel begins an extreme training course lasting 20 days to try to develop the potential of the group as much as possible. Will the Gremory house be able to survive the training?
Note: Unfortunately, this anime story arc contains filler episodes. The episodes 29 and 33 have a mixed amount of canon and filler elements, so I suggest you watch them. I know it can be boring, but you can skip the uninteresting parts if you want. The episodes from 34 to 36 are entirely filler episodes. Watch them, skip them, watch them at a later time, do as you wish. They can be a good pastime if you particularly like this anime.
High School DxD Filler Episodes
I know that time is precious and that watching an anime filler that will probably be all but interesting and logical will make you frustrated and annoyed. But here I am explaining the plots of the filler episodes of High School DxD, so that you can decide by yourself if you want to watch them or not. Here we go!
1. The Occult Club Disappears?! (Episode 34)

Emotions are not lacking. Asia saves Issei from her half-transformation and Rias, troubled by the bond between Issei and Asia, is deceived by Loki who exploits this weakness of hers.
2. I Will Fight! (Episode 35)

Loki has studied a cruel trap by making Issei fight against Rias, who fell victim to a curse that gave her an immense power: in addition to the fight there are also the strong feelings of affection that the protagonist has towards the girl. Will Issei and the others be able to defeat her?
3. Any Time, For All Time! (Episode 36)

The battle that no one has ever wanted to see starts with Issei in great difficulty, as he tries to make Rias come to her senses by calling her by her name (as she had long wanted): a great mix of adrenaline and romance.
Conclusion

So, to summarize, High School DxD is a good example of what a refreshing anime is. It has an interesting storyline with sensational fights and a background of well-maintained romantic scenes. The series is always very funny and includes moments that are not at all obvious, managing to keep the viewer’s attention high, between one nude scene and another, with jokes that tease you to laugh, especially for the unrealistic and hilarious parts that are proposed in every episode. It’s a light and fun anime with that aura of mystery that makes everything interesting.
If this is what you’re looking for, then, my friend, High School DxD is made for you. Join Issei and Rias in their adventure! You can watch the series on Crunchyroll!
