WHAT IS GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA?
Great Teacher Onizuka is the title of this manga series that was written and drawn by Tooru Fujisawa. The series is officially shortened to GTO. Originally, it was published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine between January 1997 and February 2002. After that, the individual chapters were collected into a total of twenty-five tankobon volumes.
Holy Forest Academy is a prestigious middle school located in Tokyo, Japan. The protagonist of the novel, Eikichi Onizuka, is 22 years old and was formerly a member of the bosozoku organization. This is an extension of Fujisawa’s prior manga Shonan Junai Gumi as well as Bad Company, which both center on the background of Onizuka before he became a teacher. The story of this comic is set in the same world as other series.
PLOT
Eikichi Onizuka, 22, is a former member of a gang and has never been active in some cases. Onizuka runs across a woman who is interested in having a date with him at the local shopping mall as he is looking up the skirts of girls.
Onizuka’s effort to have some nasty relations with the woman he went on a date with got foiled when her self-proclaimed “lover,” her instructor, walks into the fancy hotel they’re staying in and demands that she go back to him. The instructor is already old and is ugly, she must be under the instructor’s spell that she even throws herself out of a window from the second level and falls in his arms.
After seeing this demonstration of the influence of a teacher over students, Onizuka makes the decision to pursue a career in education. However, he manages to scrape together enough credits to acquire his teaching degree from a mediocre institution. During the course of his journey, he makes two significant discoveries: first, that he has a conscience, and second, that he possesses some sense of ethics.
Because of this, exploiting young schoolgirls is not an option; nevertheless, effective utilization of their extraordinarily gorgeous moms is a possibility. He finds fulfillment in his role as a teacher, and the majority of the time, instead of the typical academic content, he teaches them important life principles. He abhors the methods of conventional education, particularly in cases where they have become insensitive and condescending toward students and the requirements of their education.
CHARACTERS
Eikichi Onizuka
The protagonist of the story is a young woman named Azusa Fuyutsuki. She is 22 years old and works as a teacher at the very same exclusive private school like Eikichi Onizuka. With contrast to Onizuka, she had a life that was rather ordinary, culminating in her graduation from Waseda.
Her calm demeanor and moderate viewpoints are deceptive, as she reveals herself to be quite harsh when she is on her own, which terrifies the overconfident and fanatical Onizuka. She produces a lot of jelly with the eyeballs of Maguro tuna as fruits and enforces an impossible-to-follow schedule which would have killed anybody or drove them insane in order to be ready for such an exam that would decide whether or not he would have a career as a teacher.
Azusa Fuyutsuki
The Academy of Holy Forest is under the direction of Ryoko Sakurai, its director. In contrast to the opinions held by the teaching staff, she is a kind person who maintains the conviction of Eikichi Onizuka as well as the “methods” employed will prove to be beneficial to the institution. The one and only occasion during the series when she didn’t approve of the actions he made when Onizuka put her grandchild, Mayu Wakui, in danger; however, she later explains that this was because of the manipulative character of Onizuka. In addition to that, Daimon Misuzu was one of her past students.
Ryoko Sakurai
Ryoko Sakurai, the director and head of the Academy of Holy Forest She’s a loving lady who believes Eikichi Onizuka as well as his “methods” would work effectively for their school, contrasting the ideas of the staff. The one time in the anime series when she didn’t approve of this conduct would be when Onizuka threatened her grandchild, Mayu Wakui, although she later acknowledges this is because of his deceitful personality. She is however Daimon Misuzu’s previous teacher.
