Ah Gintama, an anime that always ends one day, and almost immediately seems to announce a sequel the next day. Some call it the anime of fillers that sometimes has some actual story in it here and there. A friend of mine even said that it is officially over, but in truth, it ended with an open ending, which also means it could start up again any time. Gintama is an anime that never seems to stop being funny and poking fun at other anime that take themselves too seriously. But that’s exactly how it should be, right? Because why the hell not?
Today though, we’ll be taking a look at exactly why people refer to it as the anime of a thousand fillers. Join me on this marvelously weird adventure! Grab your wooden swords, put on your poker faces, because Gintoki Sakata will not spare your laughing bones. Here we go!

What Really Is Gintama?

Gintama is an anime series based on the manga titled Gin Tama (which translates to Silver Soul), written by Hideaki Sorachi. The Science Fiction historical action story is set in the Edo era, which was conquered by aliens called the Amanto.
Our main character is Gintoki Sakata, a freelance samurai, who works with his friends, Shinpachi and Kagura to pay for a daily living. It is said that the creator added the sci-fi conditions to the story to be able to freely form his characters the way he liked despite the historical setting suggested to him by his editor.
The Manga series was adapted into an OVA feature for Jump Festa 2006, and would subsequently receive a full anime series which consists of a whopping total of 367 episodes, three movies and even a live action adaptation.

One of the charms of the series is that it doesn’t shy away from poking fun, or even flat-out trolling other anime, especially of the shounen genre, and Gintoki himself is a bit like Kenshin from Ruroni Kenshin in the fact that he uses a wooden sword instead of one made of steel and even so is extremely dangerous when angered.
An interesting small fact about Gintama is that it was produced by Studio Sunrise. Sunrise is most known for their fantastic Mecha anime, but they also did anime like this? What can go wrong, right? Well, there is a reason why the anime itself has so many fans all around the globe.
List of Gin Tama Filler Episodes

When the battle turns against them, the bad guys bring out a weapon powered by the stolen goods. Sakamoto finds the weak spot of the weapon, and it soon turns out that it’s a toy, and a transmitter.

In fact, in the middle of the races Hasegwa realizes how it was him knowing Gintoki that really caused all the bad luck he had until now, as shown in his flashbacks. He decides to change this and for his final bet, he decides on a horse named Justaway. Episode 164

People are praising the new Yorozuya for their work, and this just makes them even more furious. Part B
A Terminator reference and thus parody episode. Shinpachi meets a robot who claims to be there to save him from evil robots from the future that were sent by Skynet. Once they slowly cleared things up. However it turns out, he mistook Shinpachi for a certain Connor, so the robot finally leaves. The robot actually comes from the drawer, which is therefore supposed to be a time machine. This is a reference to Doraemon.

Hijikata arrests Gintoki for interfering with the work of a government official and offending him. Thus they end up handcuffed together and Hijikata calls for backup. Not even hair growth serums work, so now they have to find the reason why this is happening to them. To somewhat make amends to the situation, they try wearing wigs, and even having Kagura shave their hair, but this just results in more hair loss.
The cause of the chaos is a virus carried by Amanto people. Catherine has a hair growth solution which their mascot, Sadaharu eats and his hair grows out of control.

Episode 176

Part A
Parody episode of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. From an advertisement on TV, Hijikata finds out that with a golden ticket he can get a chance to visit the factory where his favorite mayonnaise is made, Mayorin. Members of the Shinsengumi are ordered to consume at least five bottles of mayo each, and this takes to some extremes.
It’s Okita who realizes what’s causing this, and when Yamazaki finds a ticket, he tells him to go, but Kondo and Yamazaki give the ticket to Hijikata who, as they claim, deserves it. Hijikata is disappointed by how mundane and simple the factory is compared to what he was expecting.

The three hives then go to war against each other but in the end, it turns out, all three queens are fine and things return to normal once again.
Episode 209

Just eight episodes into the new season, Gintoki and crew are already out of fresh new ideas, so they decide to reuse old footage, which is a popular way of cutting costs while making filler episodes in movies, tv-series and anime alike.
The episode ends with “Teach us, Ginpachi-sensei!” a special little add-on where Gintoki plays a teacher who teaches a class in high school, composed from various anime characters. The topic of the period is defining a literal kick to the balls.
Episode 252

The big Gintama Clip Show. With the end of another season of Gintama, the crew are preparing to go out with a loud bang. This is the sixth time this season when Yorozuya are sitting around the kotatsu trying to come up with a good way to celebrate the season finale.
They decide to make it up to all the people and anime they’ve parodied and trolled over the course of six seasons now. So the whole theme of the episode is everyone apologizing for something. This causes all kinds of shenanigans and the Yorozuya guys even go to a church to confess all their sins, but end up making a mockery of that even.
In the end, the series characters also apologize for not being able to drop their bad dirty jokes either, and thus the episode and with it, the season ends.

And that concludes our list. Despite this being a list of just the valuable filler episodes that actually had a story to them, or if nothing else, at the very least some comedic value behind it all, there is also some more. For one, each season had at least one recap episode and there were also some non canon episodes to mix it up pleasantly. This also includes episode 367, which thus far is our last episode as well, but also leaves the story wide open for more.
With this, I sign off for today, and I hope you all got at least a bit into watching one of the best comedy anime series of all time. As a matter of fact it is the best according to the vast majority of anime fans. I personally hope this little guide of sorts will help you a bit, and tune in next time, for more fun anime blog fun! Until then, Peace!
