Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a splendid day. I had to go through over 290 episodes of Dragon Ball Z content. Do you know how much work it is to sift out the DBZ series?! It was too much.
But I am the best, and because I am the best, I created a special blog just for you. Today, I present you with Dragon Ball Z Anime Episodes: Filler vs Canon Guide. It’s foolproof. How would I know? Because I am that fool.
Table of Contents
Anyhow, here we are. Get ready for this one. Grab a cup of water because this blog is going to be long (We don’t do soda here; it rots your teeth. Yes, you are right—I’m not your mom. But I am your sister, and I don’t want my siblings to have teeth falling all over the place. It’s just not a cute look).
Without further ado, let’s get started with these lists.

Dragon Ball Z Quick Filler Guide
I can bet that otakus, especially the manga maniacs, don’t enjoy watching anime with fillers. So, worry not! We’re here to provide you a trouble-free filler guide. So, you can manage your favorite anime without any hitches and glitches. Are you guys ready? Let’s go then!
Below, you’ll find a quick filler guide and all the required details about the anime and its fillers.
Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 has 51 episodes, out of which 12 episodes are partial fillers, and 4 are main fillers. However, the rest of the episodes show the new plot that can be technically called fillers as well!
Dragon Ball Z Canon Episodes
1-8, 17-38, 45-99, 101, 103-107, 118-123, 126-169, 172-173, 175-194, 200-201, 205-228, 230-250, 252-273, 275-286, 289-291
Mixed Canon/Filler Episodes
11, 204, 229, 251, 287
Filler Episodes (You Can Skip)
9-10, 12-16, 39-44, 100, 102, 108-117, 124-125, 170-171, 174, 195-199, 202-203, 274, 288
Canon/Filler Episodes of Dragon Ball Z

You are correct. There is already a list above that clearly states which episodes are fillers, and which ones are not. There is even a section where the mixed episodes (bits of canon and filler moments merged into an episode) are clarified.
However, I want you to have the best of both worlds. And what better way to discuss the Filler vs Canon Episodes of Dragon Ball Z than to include a list and a table.
Yes, I am the gift that just keeps on giving. It’s alright. You’re welcome.
Arc Breakdown
1. Raditz Arc

During those five years, Goku got married! He married Chi-Chi. Goku not only has a wife, but also a son! His son’s name is Gohan.
Like any overprotective mother, Chi-Chi forbids Gohan from training.
During this arc, Raditz enters the picture. Who is this Saiyan? Well, that’s what we’d like to know! And why is he linked to Goku? The questions are endless!

2. Vegeta Arc

Looks like Gohan has found a way to train! He trains with Piccolo, of all characters. Gohan’s father, Goku, well, is doing his own thing. I’m really trying hard not to spoil anything. It hurts.
Anyway, it looks like Gohan has some visitors. Vegeta and Nappa have arrived on Earth. No, they don’t want to check out the new BTS x Mc Donald’s meal. They want the dragon balls.
Allow me to give you some background information on Vegeta. He is known as Prince Vegeta. He is the prince of the Saiyans. But we all know how much that race has fallen.
He is a very prideful and arrogant man. Although he did grow on me later on in the series, his character development took its sweet time.
I suppose that is to be expected, given how long Dragon Ball Z is. Vegeta is first introduced to us as this evil antagonist, but we see him evolve throughout the arcs.
Character development is good. At least we can now see him as a creature with emotions.

3. Captain Ginyu Arc

ARGH! LISTEN. This entire arc summary has some major spoilers. I can’t help it, they’re following me.
Goku and the Ginyu force are still at it. At the same time, the other characters are trying to take back the dragon balls.
This arc is chaotic but in the best way. As always, I’m here to give you a quick briefing on some of the characters you may not know yet. Instead of characters, let’s talk about a group.
The Ginyu Force is composed of, I believe five, elite mercenaries. Their leader is Frieza. Captain Ginyu is this purple humanoid-looking extraterrestrial.
I won’t even begin to explain what race he’s from. Go search up his wiki. It’s so confusing. And what have I taught you to do whenever you come across anything that doesn’t make sense? Just walk away from it. Ignore it. Don’t waste your time. Instead, watch anime! That’s my prescription.
Captain Ginyu is quite the merciless opponent during battle. I mean, his leader is Frieza.

4. Namek Arc

Dragon Ball Z is all about the dragon balls. If you are this far in the game, and you didn’t know that, then you, my friend need to rewatch Dragon Ball.
Goku’s son, Gohan, and a few others are on a mission. They must collect more dragon balls. But this mission is not set on Earth. On the contrary, they must travel to a different planet—Namek.
If you are anything like me, then you would know how awful traveling is. You have to unpack and pack so many times. It’s just too much for me to handle.
Vegeta also shows up. Do you know who else shows up? Goku.

Guys, to make it easier for you, just assume Goku is never present. So, when I say he shows up, then you can expect him to make an appearance in the arc.
Namek is a planet found in Universe 7. Pop question, who is the Emperor of Universe 7? If you don’t know the answer, just remember this phrase- Double O’ Rat. You know, Double O’7 but replace the 7 with Frieza the Rat. I’m sorry, his excellence, the Rat Emperor.
Don’t worry if you are confused. I will talk about the Rat Emperor in the next arc.

5. Frieza Arc

So, Piccolo comes back to life. Don’t ask me how or why. I have always liked Piccolo. It has been a while since I watched Dragon Ball Z, but I remember Piccolo as this cool and mysterious character.
Guess which battle we get to see in this arc? Frieza vs Vegeta. Now that is going to be interesting. Goku is back, so that’s also nice.
I mean, it is about time. I don’t care if he was training or he could physically return, Earth is a mess right now! Freiza is a mutant of the Frieza race. He’s the one that looks like a rat. But with an alien baby doll head. Don’t tell me you don’t see it. I think it’s his tail that’s giving me rodent vibes.
He is the emperor of Universe 7, so Rat Boy over here has a ton of power and influence. He’s even got his own army!
You’d think he has enough labor force to boss around, but noooooo~ He is on a mission to conquer planets. Why? So that he can have an even larger imperialist army.

6. Garlic Jr. Arc

This arc is not important to the plot. It is a filler section of the Dragon Ball Z series. However, it stems from the series’ movie: Dead Zone (Dragon Ball Z).
Garlic Jr. is the main antagonist of the movie I mentioned above. In that tiny body of his, he holds a lot of resentment. He wants vengeance. But from what? Watch Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone to find out!

Now, we don’t know who the Super Saiyan is. Well, I do, but you don’t. Want me to spoil it to you? Okay, well you have been warned!
This mysterious, powerful being is Trunks. Hold up, let me explain. I have not gone crazy, at least not yet.
This Super Saiyan is Trunks, but the future version. Trunks is the son of Bulma and Vegeta.
So, what brings Future Trunks to our timeline? He has traveled through time to warn our beloved main character, Goku.
Remember Dr. Gero? That one dude from the Dragon Ball series? Not Dragon Ball Z, but the OG Dragon Ball. Yeah, he’s back.

If you want to find out what happened in the previous arc, then watch the arc. It is as simple as that. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
In this arc, three years have already passed. But don’t worry, it is as action-packed as ever. Goku and his friends fight against androids.
There is a kiss scene in here if that’s what gets you going. It’s an odd scene though. Don’t blame me later, I did give you a heads up.

9. Imperfect Cell Arc

This arc also has time travel in it. Cell suddenly appears through a time machine. What is Cell made up of? Well, from other cells!
An interesting fact about Cell is that he can suck powers from others—sort of like a sponge.
There is a lot of fighting in this arc. It can be confusing because there are many opponents named after numbers.
Even outside of the university, numbers and math still find me. I can’t catch a break, can I?

So, we had an Imperfect Cell, and now we have the Perfect Cell Arc. Isn’t that thoughtful of the writers? Everything ties together.
Cell and Tien Shinhan are battling each other- at this point, expect every minute of Dragon Ball Z to have some sort of fighting scene.
Androids are trying to escape. Gohan is training. Vegeta gets into his iconic Super Saiyan mode. It’s a roller coaster of episodes, I’ll tell you that much.

In this arc, we watch Gohan become a hero. Like, he is actually a superhero. No, I am not going to get out of town, I am being 100% serious. Gohan becomes a superhero.
Do you know what is even crazier? Gohan now has a brother! His brother’s name is Goten.
Oh yeah, Videl is blackmailing our superhero. Take that however you will. Goku is also back for the tournament which makes this arc even more exciting. But let’s be honest, what’s more exciting than Gohan having a brother?!

I am doing a bunch of guesses, but I want this blog to be more interactive with you all! Guess who is fighting in the junior division in the tournament?
Trunks and Goten! Unfortunately, the tournament gets stopped by Kai Shin.
His reason for interrupting was because he needed to figure out how to stop Babidi from bringing back Majin Buu. Fine, I’ll let you slide Supreme Kai. But only this one time.

Babidi bibbity bop. Doesn’t Babidi’s name remind you of Cinderella? Well, Babidi is not a Fairy Godmother. He’s in fact an evil alien wizard— and maybe this is just me, but that doesn’t seem so wholesome and sweet.
Babidi, in this arc, turns Vegeta into a different Vegeta. Yeah, I’m getting a migraine just thinking about it. He transforms him into Majin Vegeta. Great.
At least Goku fights this new Vegeta. I said Vegeta too many times here. This arc should have been called Vegeta instead!

God, what doesn’t happen in this arc. Okay, so Vegeta sacrifices himself, what’s new? Majin Buu ends up pulverizing Gohan.
Supreme Kai steps in to save Gohan by blasting him into a nearby forest. Buu and Babidi believe that Gohan bit the bullet.
Vegeta has killed people, and Bulma is doing her best to try and bring those dead people back to life. Here is the thing with Dragon Ball Z, and all of its other branches: I don’t like how they throw death around like it’s a different sleeping stage.
I get it, this is an anime and not real life. But I grew up watching Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z every Saturday morning at 9:00 am.
Maybe I’m scared of growing up. I am slowly catching the absurdities in all of my favorite childhood shows. It could be just me that’s feeling this, but as I grow older, the magic of shows gradually decreases.
Do you get what I’m saying? I’m no longer in awe when I watch Goku scream at the top of his lungs. I miss feeling that adrenaline.

Am I allowed to say what I’m going to say? This arc is basically Dragon Ball Z on crack. Like there really is no other way to describe this arc.
It’s so hard to understand! And I am by no means smart enough to figure out what’s going on here. Okay. Deep breaths.
There are two Buu’s in this arc: Good and Evil Buu. He split because his body couldn’t handle his temper. In this arc, they fuse together—hence the arc title ‘Fusion’. This Super Buu is simply waiting for a strong fighter to give him a run for his money.

It worked. The Large Spirit Bomb or the Super Spirit Bomb defeated Super Buu. Isn’t that fitting? There are celebrations and parties.
It’s ten years later, and Gohan has a kid. Like father, like son. Gohan didn’t wait. Do you know who’s the mother of Gohan’s daughter? Videl! The chick that was blackmailing him.

Conclusion

My fingers hurt. When I was typing the summary for the Majin Buu Arc, my middle finger cracked. Isn’t that a sign of some sort?!
Like out of all fingers, it had to be the middle finger! Here on Quote the Anime, we try to be as transparent as possible with you all. So, I would like to share my unfiltered thoughts with you. But that isn’t anything new.
I first watched Dragon Ball Z when I was six years old. I wish I could tell you I knew what was going on. But alas, I didn’t. I couldn’t even tell the villains apart!
I just knew that when Goku yelledyells, something good was happening or was going to happen. That’s all I needed. There is a reason why the Dragon Ball franchise is so popular, and that’s because it touched the hearts of dormant otakus.
That’s enough jokes out of me. Let’s get serious. It’s funny that I am just now getting all professional.
Dragon Ball Z is an anime that has transgressed time. It’s nostalgic. I spoke about growing up, and how that has affected my perspective on anime and shows in general. Sure, that same feeling you first had when watchingwatched DBZ Episode 1. But you’d be surprised at how many memories arise from rewatching DBZ.
Maybe this is your sign to watch Dragon Ball Z. You already have a perfect guide to help—not to pat my back or anything.
