Table of Content

Season 1: Emperor Pilaf Saga (1986)

Emperor Pilaf Saga (1986)

Episodes: 1-13
Release: February 26, 1986 – May 21, 1986

Pilaf Arc, also known as Emperor Pilaf Saga is the first and foremost Sagas in the history of Dragon Ball. It follows the storyline of the manga volumes “Wish Upon A Dragon” and “The Monkey King.” It incorporates the manga chapters from 1-23 and this is where the magic happened.

In this saga, Goku is found in the mountains by Grandpa Gohan, he meets Bulma, Puar, Roshi, Ox-King, Chi-Chi, and he must fight the antagonist named Emperor Pilaf and his crew. A unique thing about Emperor Pilaf Saga is that it’s episodic. Meaning that each episode will probably resolve the issue that’s causing trouble to Goku and his crew.

This first season was very basic. All the villains would try their best to do stuff but ultimately fail due to Goku and his friends interfering with their plans. There are a lot of other interesting facts but it’ll go towards the spoiler side. The manga release of this season was in 1984-1985. It was later adapted into its Anime version, making it one of the most epic Anime of all time.

Emperor Pilaf Saga is also talked about in a lot of Dragon Ball Movies like “The Path to Power”, “Dragon Ball Evolution”, “Curse of the Blood Rubies”.

Season 2: Tournament Saga (1986)

Tournament Saga (1986)

Episodes: 14-28
Release: May 28, 1986 – September 3, 1986

Tournament Saga is the second saga from the Dragon Ball series. It incorporates the manga chapters from the volumes “The Training of Kame Sennin” and the “Strongest UnderTheHeavens”. The main focus of this arc is Goku and Krillin training under Master Roshi to prepare for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament Saga. It follows the events that occurred in chapters 24-54 in the manga, making it a pretty important one for the fans.

The manga was released in 1985, however, the actual anime was animated in 1986. The main focus of the Dragon Ball franchise was to introduce an arc that’ll make Dragon Ball boom all over the world. So they resorted to Martial Arts Tournaments which were very popular in Japan and other countries like China.

Another interesting fact about the Tournament Saga is that the style that Goku and Krillin learn in this season was very similar to what Danial Larusso learns from Mr. Miyagi in the movie “The Karate Kid.”

Red Ribbon Army Saga (1986–1987)

Episodes: 29-45
Release: September 10, 1986 – January 7, 1987

The third and probably one of the most popular Sagas from the Dragon Ball series, Red Ribbon army is introduced this season and it follows the manga chapters from “The Red Ribbon Army” and “Bulma Returns” volumes.

The events in anime are from manga chapters 55-69, and I must say that it packs a lot of punch. The red ribbon army is the enemy and they want all the smoke!

Goku vs General White was probably the most hyped fight in this season.

General Blue is the main villain in this Arc and Goku must fight this handsome lad to save his friends. In this Saga, a young girl named Arale is introduced. I won’t spoil anything but I must say that Arale is pretty darn strong!

Season 5: Commander Red Saga (1987)

Commander Red Saga (1987)

Episodes: 58-67
Release: April 15, 1987 – July 1, 1987

After the General Blue Saga, we get to see Commander Red Saga. Covering the manga volume “Taopaipai & Master Karin,” This arc is all about action. Goku vs Mercenary Tao is probably one of the most iconic scenes in the Dragon Ball series, and while it’s nowhere comparable to the latest seasons and stuff, at the time of its release in 1987, this saga was one of its kind.

It covers the manga chapters from 84 to 96 and it incorporates the story where the Red Ribbon soldiers were searching for Dragon Balls in the Land of Korin.

The sixth saga that covers the adventure of Goku and friends, Fortuneteller Baba arc incorporates the Manga Volumes of “Test of The All-Seeing Crone” and “Return To the Tournament.” This is volumes 9 and 10, covering the Manga chapters from 97-112.

This Arc is after the Red Saga and the storyline follows Goku trying his best to find all the seven Dragon Balls. It also includes Goku trying to fight for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament

A rather interesting fact about this Saga is that the last 4 episodes can be considered as a mini-arc known as “Training on the Road.”

Season 8: King Piccolo Saga (1988)

King Piccolo Saga (1988)

Episodes: 102-122
Release:
February 24, 1988 – August 10, 1988

King Piccolo! OH MY GOD. That one villain everyone just hates. This Saga includes “The Demon King Piccolo” and “Piccolo Conquers the World”. This time, there’s a 3rd volume included too which is “Heaven and Earth.”  It covers volumes 12,13, and 14. This season follows the storyline after the Tien Shinhan Saga where Goku meets a samurai named Yajirobe, and together, all of our Z heroes fight the Evil King Piccolo.

An interesting fact about this saga is that the villain, for the first time in Dragon Ball’s history, managed to use the Dragon Ball to get what he needed. The Anime turned dark all of a sudden and everything became violent to the point where it almost felt like Dragon Ball was a horror Anime.
