WHAT IS DARLING IN THE FRANXX?
First of all, FRANXX is not the hotdog you get from Germany. It’s like Gundam, but you can’t use it when you’re single. So if the world ends and I am the MC, then humanity will just die out. Straight-up instant death. I can’t pilot it by myself.
Moving on from my rant, DARLING in the FRANXX is an anime series that was animated by three studios! It’s a collaboration by Studio Trigger, CloverWorks, and even A-1 Pictures, which begs the question, “Why tho?”. DARLING in the FRANXX is not a triple-A title in the anime industry like Demon Slayer so this kind of work is extremely surprising.
Shortly after the anime was released on January 13th, 2018, the manga started serializing in March, which proves that all of it is indeed canon since the anime came first. It has a lot of themes, especially the process of puberty, a child’s innocence, some aspects of spirituality, individuality and finding one’s identity, and a lot more.
In total, there were 24 episodes, with all of them being canon. It generally follows the sci-fi mecha genre, but romance took over most of the 2nd half of the season. Overall, it was just a great show, and real men cried at the ending. If you’re reading this, Shayne (my co-worker), your heart is as cold as old yogurt in the fridge for not bawling your eyes out.
PLOT
DARLING in the FRANXX starts off with a post-apocalyptic Earth. The planet is nothing but a wasteland, and humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction by beings called Klaxosaurs. The last remaining humans rejected the possibility of reproduction as they achieved immortality, and the children that were genetically engineered, are nothing but slaves to the upper echelon of society called APE.
These children, called parasites, were made for one purpose and one purpose only, to fight in mechas called FRANXX, as they needed a boy and a girl to pilot one and defend the prison-like domes they called home. Unfortunately, the world will get one massive plot twist as a boy named Hiro, a fallen prodigy, meets up with Zero Two, the partner killer.
In a battle against a Klaxosaur, Zero Two’s partner was bloodied and bruised and could no longer fight. With Hiro losing his purpose due to not being able to pilot a FRANXX, he tries his best to at least find something he can do. The string of fate intertwines and the two meet.
Zero Two no longer has a partner, and Hiro doesn’t have a purpose. Hiro suddenly calls out to the wounded Zero Two that he’ll become her partner even though he knew what the consequences were. He gets inside the cockpit and their chemistry awakens the Iron Maiden, the original form of Zero Two’s FRANXX called Strelizia.
They defeat the Klaxosaur in glorifying fashion. Destiny has finally given these two misfits what they had been missing from their lives. Hiro can now fight and pilot a FRANXX and Zero Two has finally found her “Darling”. That is…the story of DARLING in the FRANXX.
An unlikely duo blooming into the most extraordinary relationship in a world that throws the odds against them. A story where a Jian takes flight: two birds, each with one wing and one eye, were born imperfect, but they are leaning on each other to fly. Lasting through death and into the next life.
