CHARLOTTE HISTORY
The Charlotte anime was adapted from its manga counterpart and started airing in July 2015 and ended in September 2015. The series had only one season, with a total of 13 episodes and an OVA episode as well.
CHARLOTTE PLOT
Charlotte introduces us to Yuu Otosaka, a high school student. There’s something special about Yuu; he can read people’s minds. However, he can only do that for about 5 seconds. This special ability of Yuu’s got him into a very prestigious school and made him the top student in his class.
His good days did not last long, as the student council president from Hoshinoumi Academy, Nao Tomori, caught him. Nao wants him to join the Houshinomi Academy and the student council there. Now, Houshinoumi Academy is not an ordinary academy.
It is an institute for all those students who have supernatural powers. The students of the student council there were responsible for locating the students who were using their powers for their own good.
Yuu agrees and joins the academy as well as the student council. Together, they do their jobs, but they get into more complicated problems than they thought they would.
CHARLOTTE EPISODES
1. Episode 1 (I Think About Others)
Episode 1 introduces us to Yuu Otosaka, a high school boy who has supernatural abilities that help him climb to the top of his class. Through his ability, Yuu is able to cheat during exams by looking at other students’ sheets.
Now, Yoshiyuki Omuura, who is the president of the student council, suspects Yuu. He tells Yuu to retake the exam or else he’ll get expelled from school. Yuu attempts to run away but is caught by another student who can travel at high speed.
All of this was set up by the student council president of Hoshinoumi Academy, Nao Tomori. She then proceeds to beat up Yuu after he’s caught. Nao tells Yuu to get enrolled at the Hoshinoumi Academy as it is an institute for people like him. Yuu reluctantly agrees and prepares himself for his new school.
2. Episode 2 (Melody of Despair)
After joining the student council, Yuu is tasked with the safety of those students who have special powers like him. Yuu comes across Jojiro, who has teleportation power but is still practicing it. Both Yuu and Jojiro also meet a guy named Takehito Kumagami, who can detect others’ powers.
The three of them come across a boy who was taking photos of girls’ panties through his ability. He told them that he was doing that just to make some money for his sick parents. He then promises that he won’t do that ever again.
The next morning, Nao takes Yuu with him in order to meet her brother. Her brother had been experimenting with sound waves in order to manipulate them. In the process, he had gone insane. Nao then explains to Yuu that she was able to take her brother away from an unhealthy environment because of a certain someone she respects and trusts.
3. Episode 3 (Love and Flame)
In this episode, the gang is entrusted with the mission of finding a person who apparently had two abilities. Yuu and Nao come across an idol named Yusa Nishimori, who has been haunted by her dead sister, Misa. Yusa explains to them that she had been chased because she accidentally took the phone of a renowned producer, and that phone had all his dirty secrets.
Nao then sets a trap for the producer. Yusa confronts the producer while being possessed by Misa. She gives the producer his phone and wants him to leave Yusa alone. After that, Nao tells Yusa to enroll at the Hoshinoumi Academy.
4. Episode 4 (Moment of the Earnest)
Next up, the gang’s mission is to find a student who can use telekinesis in the Kannai Academy. They suspect a baseball pitcher named Arifumi Fukuyama. When they talk to Arifumi, he refuses to use his superpowers. Now, Nao has a plan. She tells Arifumi that there’s going to be a baseball match between his school and her academy.
If her academy wins, Arifumi has to stop using his powers. After the victory of Hoshinoumi Academy, Arifumi reveals that he was using his power only to help his friend, Takato, who was also in his baseball team and wanted to go to the national league.
5. Episode 5 (Sound Heard Sometime in the Past)
In Episode 5, our group learns about a man with the ability to fly. They come across Saito, the ability user. He refuses to not use his ability and tries to escape after stealing Nao’s camera. He’s stopped by Yuu and finally agrees to not use his ability.
6. Episode 6 (Happiness Never Noticed)
Ayumi is sick and is resting at home. Meanwhile, our group came to know of a user who can use the collapse ability. They suspect Ayumi, and she’s told to not come to school for one more day. However, Ayumi decides to sneak into school.
At the school, Ayumi is confronted by Konishi. That’s when Ayumi decides to activate her ability. The building is getting destroyed, and Ayumi disappears. Yuu searches for her but faints after getting hit by a piece of rubble.
7. Episode 7 (Beyond The Escape)
After the school incident, Yuu finds himself in a hospital. There, he learns that his sister has died. He becomes depressed and avoids meeting anyone, locking himself up in his room. He goes to a manga cafe in order to avoid the government agents.
He becomes more depressed over time, and just when he’s about to do drugs, he’s stopped by Nao. She urges him to eat something healthy and return to school. Yuu agrees and decides to work even harder.
8. Episode 8 (A Chance Meeting)
Yuu goes back to school. There, all of them watch Yusa’s new music video. Yuu is invited by Nao to a concert of her favorite band, Zhiend. Yuu meets the blind vocalist by the band, Sala Shane, who accompanies him to pay respect to his deceased sister.
Both of them then go to the hospital to see Kazuki. He’s calmed down by Sala’s singing. Nao thanks Sala for helping them with Kazuki and sees her off.
9. Episode 9 (A World that Does not Exist Here)
While Yuu is at the concert of Zhiend with Nao, he feels that the situation is familiar. He starts remembering the time when he and Ayumi were being monitored for their abilities in an alternate timeline. Yuu then comes across his brother, Shunsuke Otosaka.
Now, Shunsuke now has the ability to time travel. Yuu then wakes up in the present. He now knows that he has a brother. With the help of Kumagami, he and Nao go to see his brother.
10. Episode 10 (Plunder)
Shunsuke and Kumagami had a history. They, along with a bunch of users, used to protect other ability users from researchers. Shunsuke used to travel back in time multiple times in order to find a solution. However, that put a strain on his eyesight and he went blind slowly.
It was revealed that Shunsuke was the one who made the Hoshinoumi Academy. He also erased his siblings’ memories of him. Shunsuke, in the present, tells Yuu to go back in time and save Ayumi. Yuu goes back in time and saves Ayumi from dying. He and Ayumi are then taken to Shunsuke by Kumagami.
11. Episode 11 (Charlotte)
Shunsuke tells Yuu to stay with Ayumi at his safe facility. Tsutsumiuchi reveals that the reason they have the abilities is that they inhaled the particles spread by a comet named “Charlotte” that passes by the earth every 75 years. Meanwhile, Kumagami is being tortured by a group of terrorists.
They hold both Kumagami and Nao hostage. Yuu decides to go save them but is attacked by an ability user. He uses his collapse ability but teleports himself and the ability user. Meanwhile, Kumagami dies while saving Nao.
12. Episode 12 (Promise)
Yuu wakes up in a hospital where he learns about the loss of his right eye. Shunsuke reveals that a group of terrorists will be attacking Japan soon. Nao suggests Yuu travel overseas and gather the abilities of users all around the world. However, it could affect the sanity of Yuu greatly.
Yuu agrees and promises Nao that he will come back home safely. Nao also tells Yuu that he should take away her and the group’s abilities as well.
Episode 13 (Memories to Come)
Yuu travels to the Philippines and starts his mission there. He meets a lot of ability users and takes their abilities from them. As he travels across the world, his mental health deteriorates. He then wakes up in Japan with Nao at his bedside because Shunsuke used his ability. He is successful in his mission.
There were no users present in the world, and everyone could live a normal life now.
CONCLUSION
