Blue Exorcist is a very underrated anime that was released way back. Although it was quite popular during the time of its initial release, people slowly shifted their focus to other places. It is a small anime with a few episodes but despite that, it is not devoid of fillers.
Most of the fillers in Blue Exorcist are between the gap of its two arcs and in my opinion, watching them is a waste of time. So, I will be providing an easy-to-follow filler guide with a short summary of the fillers, so that you can decide for yourself which one to exclude while watching the anime.

Episode 6

This episode is titled as The Phantom Chef which solely revolves around lunches. Yes, I know it sounds boring as hell and maybe it is not such a bad idea to skip it. It starts with Rin trying to improve his lunch condition.
He even gets in a fight with Yukio and Suguru for that. He ultimately decides to go to Mephisto Pheles and ask for an allowance. He follows through on his plan and makes the lunches at night. But on waking up from his sleep, he finds out that the lunches he had made have completely disappeared. His anger level crosses the limit and he lashes out at his brother Yukio. Yukio defends himself by saying that he did not eat his lunch.
Rin said that they were the only people living there to which Yukio replied that there is someone else beside them. Suddenly, they heard some noise and discovered Mephisto Pheles on going to the Kitchen.
He informed the boys that all their food was prepared by a spirit of the stove and he left his job since he did not like the boys stepping into his territory. That’s when Rin understood how there was always cooked food at their table.
Episode 11

This is a mandatory beach episode where Rin gets his first official mission. He has been sent with a trio to a coastal town where their job is to stop a Kraken. As we know, Kraken is a mythical creature that is causing a lot of problems in the coastal area by spreading black ink all around the water.
Moreover, Yohei’s father had gone to tackle the Kraken many months ago. He still hasn’t returned which means that he has been unsuccessful in his mission. This is also why Yohei is hell bent on getting revenge for his father by killing the kraken.
Anime Exclusive Arc (Episodes 18-25)
This arc serves as a relaxation period before we move on to the next one. It is a mixture of a lot of events and your head may even begin to spin at one point. Firstly, the Exwires find it hard to digest the fact that Rin is Satan’s son, then there is Yukio becoming a Paladin while there is also a threat of Satan coming to Assiah.
Episode 18

The main story in this episode starts with Rin and Izumo suddenly getting attacked. The surprising thing is that they have no idea about the identity of this attacker. They are totally in the dark and decide to fill in Mephisto Pheles with the details. On learning about the situation, Mephisto Pheles immediately jumps into action and issues an order to the Exwires.
They have checked the barriers thoroughly that are surrounding the school and try to find any clues for potential breach. After much investigation, it is revealed that the unknown attacker is actually a demon.
It had managed to break into the school grounds by successfully exploiting the fear of Konekomaru. But what was he afraid of? He was fearful of Rin himself since he was Satan’s son. While conducting their investigation, they discover a secret door that leads them to an empty lab.
There they find out that the demon has already taken over his heart. This is where Rin jumped straight to action and pulled him out of danger by slaying the demon into pieces. After that, they also had to convince him to stay in the school because he was totally filled with guilt.
Episode 19

The title of this episode is An Ordinary Day and judging by the title you can probably guess that it is a feel good episode. There are no demons or monsters in this episode as the students try to spend a very normal day like others. It mainly involves the planning of Izumo’s birthday after the Exwires knew about it. Also, if you wanna check out more Blue Exorcist birthdays, don’t be shy and check it out!
They decided to host a secret party and surprise Izumo. But Kamiki soon started to doubt their actions when she saw Shima and Paku together. She finally uncovered the fact that the Exwires were trying to throw a secret party for Izumo.
So, she proposed the idea that it shouldn’t be a party only for a single person. The party should also involve all the birthdays of those people whose dates have already passed. Ultimately, with all the confusion regarding the aim of the party it was decided that the party will be a celebration of their friendship and close bond.
However, the happiness did not last long and Yukio soon informed them that their home monastery had been attacked. This news kind of left a sour mood on the whole celebration.
Episode 20

This episode followed the events that transpired in the ending of the last one. On hearing about the news that their old monastery was attacked, Rin and the others rushed to the said location to help their friends.
They arrived at the place and met up with their friends in the monastery. Apparently, a masked individual had been attacking everyone in that place and covered their body with spider webs that were almost indestructible. The main aim of the assailant was also known. It was to destroy anything with a little bit of connection to Satan’s son, Rin.
Rin insisted on helping out his friends but Yukio told him to stay there since his sword got covered by that indestructible web. Rin listened to that advice for a few moments only to jump into action again when Suguro and Renzo were in trouble. This was also a test for Rin since he had to control his flames properly when he tried to help them.
At last, Rin managed to defeat the attacker and emerged victorious. Later, everyone came to know that it was Neuhaus’ wife who was causing all these troubles out of sheer anger towards Rin.
Episode 21

This episode involves a mysterious garden which gave the name of the episode “The Secret Garden”. It all starts with Shiemi discovering a woman who was unconscious in the garden of her shop. On the other hand, Yukio has his own set of problem’s to deal with. Ernst Frederik Egin dropped a truthbomb in his face by saying that he was his grandfather.
He also revealed a very sad truth about his mother. Apparently, the Vatican deemed her to be a witch and burnt her alive. Egin then proposed to Yukio that he should join him because Shiro is no more while Mephisto got arrested.
Later, we found out that Neuhaus was being questioned by the others who informed them about the true identity of the assailant. It was his dead wife who had the spirit of a demon inside her and was looking to hunt down Satan. However, Neuhaus refused any claims of him resurrecting his own wife.
Rin then discovered that the woman lying unconscious in that garden was the wife of Neuhaus. He tried killing her but Shiemi stopped him right in his tracks. The situation didn’t stop there and the Paladin Angel arrived to kill that demon only to get confronted by Rin.
Episode 22

The situation in this episode gets out of control when Egin appoints himself as the new leader of True Cross and makes Yukio as the Paladin. He also gives the responsibility of the Japanese Branch to Yukio. Egin wastes no time and gets straight into the action of killing all demons.
For this task, he has issued that Exorcists with special weapons will not only kill them, but also drain out their blood. The plan of removing demons from all of Assiah begins which makes Rin question the matter.
He is not so sure about the plan since it is more violent than before. Even Yukio doesn’t listen to anything since he is convinced that it is all a part of the ultimate goal to defeat the demon realm and make them vanish completely. It seems like a pretty good plan but every evil character gives away some bad vibes and Egin does so too.
It becomes very clear that he has a hidden motive which is soon revealed. His main aim is to use the blood of Rin and open the gate to the demon realm. In this way, Satan can come to Assiah and his plan will be fulfilled.
Episode 23

Episode 23 titled “Truth” is all about some very big revelations. It is basically an origin story that digs deep into the past of both Yukio and Rin. But firstly, we will talk about how Ernst’s plan to eradicate Gehenna completely failed and backfired on him.
This was mainly done by Satan who chose to reveal the truth regarding the boys’ mother to them. Satan told Yukio that the story about his mother that Ernst told him was completely false. The Vatican hadn’t decided to declare her as a witch and burn her.
Instead, it was done by Ernst himself. This is because Yukio’s mother, Yuri, had decided to give birth to two children who had demonic origin. This infuriated Ernst and he passed that cruel order. Satan, on the other hand, tried to protect Yuri by possessing many human bodies.
He only chose those bodies that would be too weak to contain the power of Satan and perish in the process. He had done a similar thing with Ernst’s body which had ultimately given rise to the phenomenon of the Blue Night.
Episode 24

This is a chaotic episode in which the Exorcists desperately need to come up with a way to save everyone. Satan has taken over Yukio’s body and is causing a massive rampage. True Cross Academy is bearing the brunt of his main destruction as the blue flames are spreading everywhere.
While trying to figure out a way on how to stop Satan, they suddenly notice that Satan isn’t leaving the Gate. This gives them the idea that Satan is guarding it by himself since Rin possesses the power to destroy the Gate completely.
On the other side, the students keep evacuating the school and Shura manages to form a plan. They have to create a distraction for Satan and while he is occupied with that, it will give Rin the opportunity to strike and break the Gate. But every good plan has flaws in one way or the other and in this case, it was Shiemi.
She tried to make Yukio come to his senses but it didn’t seem to work on him. Meanwhile, Satan is not wasting a single moment of time. With every passing second he is getting all the stronger and it seems like the boundary between the human realm and the demon realm will soon disappear.
Episode 25

Finally, we arrive at the last episode of this filler arc. A lot of things are happening simultaneously and it is hard to keep a track of things. Firstly, there is the group of Rin, Yukio, Shura and Arthur who have come together to destroy the Gate at any cost.
On the other side, demons have been continuously pouring out of the Gate, leaving the Exorcists no time to breathe. This is when the Exwires came in clutch and formed up a plan. They decided to make the entry of the Gate at the Vatican since the sun was shining brightly there at the moment.
This was the perfect entry point for Rin and Yukio who used this opportunity to destroy the Gate by combining their powers together. Satan seemed to have been killed since he appeared as his characteristic blue flame but it was very small. At his last moments, he could envision Yukio and Rin’s mother, Yuri.
Satan regretted not being able to keep the promise he made to Yuri. But Yuri said that it was completely fine. It was their fault that they tried to do everything so fast and it should have been done in steps.
Blue Exorcist Comprehensive Filler Guide
Blue Exorcist has a total of 37 episodes. I mean it is not wild to imagine that Blue Exorcist will be free of spoilers. But the people behind Blue Exorcist had some other ideas. Similar to other anime, here is a whole arc of filler episodes with feel good stuff to ease you into the third canon arc.
In hindsight, the idea wasn’t bad considering some people tend to enjoy anime-exclusive content. For them, it is just a bonus storyline that they will enjoy thoroughly. For people like me, it is kind of a waste of time, and we just prefer to skip them. So, below I will be providing a comprehensive filler guide to help you navigate through this series.
1. Exorcist Cram School Enrollment Arc (Episodes 1-9)

It is never a good feeling to experience the death of one’s father. But imagine when someone comes to know that the one who died wasn’t even their real father and it is actually someone else. Our protagonist, Rin Okumura, has to experience this unfortunately, who didn’t even get time to process all of these.
One thing after the other was put on his shoulders, leaving him shocked. The most frightening one out of all of them may have been when it is revealed that his actual father is Satan. His surrogate father, Shiro Fujimoto, had been trying to hide his real identity all along to protect him from any danger. So, after his death, the baton passed to Mephisto Pheles, who was a dear friend of Fujimoto.
Thus, Rin gets himself enrolled in True Cross Academy where his new life begins. He has to hide his true self and mix with the other students while undergoing severe training to become an Exorcist. There is only one filler episode in this arc and it is Episode 6. One filler out of nine doesn’t seem so bad, so you may as well watch it.
2. Exorcist Candidate Live Combat Arc (Episodes 10-17)

The hardest part about going to an academy is the challenge that lies in making new friends. Our hero, Rin, was also facing such a difficult situation as he struggled to mix among the Exwires and keep his identity a secret.
So, during a camping trip, he finally decided to speed up his attempt. However, his plan was soon put to a halt when Amaimon popped out of nowhere and attacked their group. This is where Rin’s dedication came into action as he didn’t think twice about sacrificing his secret identity to protect his friends.
Naturally, he faced the consequences of his actions and Arthur A. Angel captured him. Being a good friend to Rin’s surrogate father, Mephisto came to his rescue and proposed a wager. It would help in determining if Rin can become a sturdy defensive line against the mighty Satan. Similar to the previous arc, this one also has a filler episode in the form of episode 11.
3. Kyoto Impure King Arc (Episodes 26-37)

This is the last arc in the anime series and makes up a highly interesting story. The main core of this arc was a mission for the Exwires in Tokyo where they had to keep the Right Eye of the King under protection.
The mission to recover the Left Eye had already failed which made this one even more important. It came with its own set of challenges for Rin who had to work extra hard to gain back the lost trust of the Exwires after it was revealed that he was Satan’s son. Side by side, he also had to keep his powers in check by earning greater control over his flames.
An opportunity landed in front of him again when the Impure King got revived after they failed to protect the Right Eye. Fans will be happy to know that the last arc in Blue Exorcist anime is completely filler free.
Blue Exorcist Plot

Blue Exorcist takes place in a world where humans and demons exist in two different realms. It is not exactly easy to travel from one realm to the other and it can only be done if the said person were to possess someone. But the ruler of the demon realm, Satan, can’t just possess anybody. It has to be a very powerful vessel capable of containing someone like Satan.
This is why he came up with a plan and sent his son to the human realm instead. His plan relies on his son growing up and Satan taking over his body later. The boy’s name is Rin and he did not have any idea of this while he was growing up. But one day when he got attacked by demons, everything became crystal clear to him.
He did not want to cooperate with Satan in his evil plan and decided to join up a school to become an exorcist. In this way, he can train himself to defend the human realm against his father when the time comes. Go check out Blue Exorcist Quotes and how words are more powerful than a sword at times.
