GOHAN’S AGE WHEN HE FOUGHT CELL
Since we are talking about facts and information there is one thing I’ve been curious about for a long time.
Remember Cell? Of course, you do. No true Dragon Ball fan could forget one of the best arcs of the series, am I right?
The Earth was in imminent danger, a genius yet completely deranged scientist created a cyborg that even he couldn’t control and let loose on the Blue Planet.
Not cool man, the cyborg ended up killing more than a hundred people with the super weird tail of his.
Anyway, Goku and his gang took it upon themselves to stop his rampage (Dragonball Z – Season 6, Episode 12) . They looked pissed from the beginning till the end, criticizing Cell’s creator for giving birth to this monster. However, I know for a fact that deep down they were all super excited, maybe even overjoyed, to finally have an OP opponent to spar with.
That is until the situation got out of hand and Goku ended up crossing to the other side, that means he died (Dragonball Z – Episode 188): if you didn’t get it.
Why did he die? You can blame it all on Gohan, the kid who awakened a newfound power within him was beating Cell to a pulp.
Wanting to show off to his family and friends, he thought it would be okay to have his way with him before shutting him down for good. Well, it was not okay.
With nothing more to lose, Cell decided to self-destruct to save the last hint of dignity that he had left, forcing Goku to sacrifice himself to save the others.
Now that our little refresher is done, let’s move on to my question. Do you know how old Gohan was at the time?
We all looked at him, shocked at the kid who was about to save the Earth, but was he really just a kid?
Thing is, Saiyans don’t age as we do. They had a far greater lifespan than humans and Chichi is really agonizing over the fact that her husband still looks like he is in his 30s when she looks like a baba.
Oh, and to make things even more confusing, let’s not forget that our little warrior spends a lot of time in the Hyperbolic Time Changer, which means that years may have passed for him, while only a few days may have gone by on Earth.
When Gohan Fought Cell, What Was His Calendar Age?
Let’s start by answering this question the easy way and try to determine how old Gohan was when he fought Cell based on his calendar age, shall we?
It is said in the series that Gohan was born in 757, and as per our records, the Cell Games began in 767. Taking that into consideration, plus the fact that we saw the little Saiyan celebrate his anniversary during that time, that would make him 10 years old.
He was actually just a brat when he fought Cell! I was waiting to be shocked, well, I was but not the way I was expecting. Anyway, he is the prodigy people say he is after all.

When Gohan Fought Cell, What Was His Physical Age?
I said it before, Gohan stayed in the Hyperbolic Time Changer for quite a long time. So, when the time was running its course on Earth, it practically stopped for him.
In the name of training, who knows how many years he stayed in the alternate dimension kicking butts with his father.
Who knows? Do you know? Well, I know…as per my very meticulous calculation, I came to the conclusion that he stayed there for almost a year (Dragon Ball Z Episode 168), which means that when he fought Cell, he was not 10 but 11. That’s still pretty damn young if you ask me.
Why is Gohan titled “Teen Gohan” in the Dragon Ball Games?
The gamers out there might have realized that in the Dragon Video Game, Gohan is called Teen Gohan. And as far as I’m concerned 11 years old is far from being a teen, don’t you agree? So something doesn’t add up here. Let’s discover what it is.
The explanation is pretty lame to tell you the truth since it was only added as a filler by Toei to point out the differences in age between the three Gohan avatars.
See, in the Original Japanese version of the game you have three playable Gohan who is called “Younen” Gohan, “Shounen” Gohan, and “Seinen” Gohan.
So, referring to each of them using an age bump was the most effective and simplest way to translate the words from Japanese to English.
Conclusion
I don’t want to put it out like that but, it was an eleven-year-old brat who can’t even be called a teen who pulverized one of the strongest villains in the entire Dragon Ball series.
I mean he defeated a monster that our MCs Goku and Vegeta couldn’t win against, a monster that was so epic that he became the main antagonist of the new Dragon Ball movie that came out not long ago.
Said to be the only character to be able to surpass our two Saiyans gods, the author did him dirty and turned him into a nerd in love with insects. Why insects? At least pick something a little cooler for him.
Hopefully, he is just bringing our expectations down to put them right back up and blow our minds in the process. I bet he is just waiting for the right time to do it.
