The personality of an anime character can fall into categories. All of them have common traits. The characters that have the same category will all act the exact same way.
Table of Contents
You will know what they might do in the future just by knowing which “Dere” they are. Some “Dere” types can be confusing since they can be similar to each other.
To make sure you will always get it right, I made a small dictionary of all the “Dere” types that currently exist.
EASY GUIDE ON ALL OF THE “DERE” TYPES IN ANIME
Deredere

There is at least one Deredere character in any anime or manga that you will ever watch or read. They are super common protagonists or support characters and might, in rare cases, appear as antagonists.
Deredere characters have extremely kind personalities, they are always positive and energetic. The smile on their faces never disappears no matter the situation. If something bad happens to them they are quick to get back on their feet.
Always cheerful and happy, they try to spread their state of mind to those who are around them and it usually works. They spread a good mood and good vibes, although it can be a bit too much at times.
While most of the “Dere” types are composed of words with meanings, this type is an expectation with no abbreviation.

You can take the word as a whole and consider it as the symbol for “lovey-dovey”. Now “lovey-dovey” is a very specific personality, however, you will realize that not all the Deredere will share that trait to the same exaggerated extent.
Some “Dere” types can be difficult to differentiate, however, there are always tips and tricks to help identify in which category your character falls.
What I’m about to tell you is only applied to the Deredere type and it is the best way to categorize them.
Opposite of all the other types and quite surprisingly as well, considering their lovey-dovey tendencies, the Derederes accept their crush’s rejection quite easily.
They don’t get infatuated with them and are able to grow and develop on their own by following their own unique path that can sometimes be separate from their love interest.
Also, jealousy is, I believe, a word that is non-existent in their dictionary. They find it completely normal for girls or guys to get as close as them to their crush. They find happiness by seeing the one they cherish surrounded by people who cherish them as well.
Even if they fall in love with someone else, the Deredere will feel no bitterness towards the one they chose, as long as that person is happy and no harm will come to them then the Deredere is satisfied.

Although they are the only ones hurting, they find the power to be genuinely kind and supportive to their rivals who beat them.
Deredere are selfless and are also open books, they wear their emotions on their sleeve and have no problem at all showing them with utmost honesty.
It’s a bit more difficult to be that open with their love interest since it can be embarrassing, so sometimes actions can be more appropriate than words. They sometimes opt for a cuddle or a hug.
As I said before, the “Dere” types can be quite confusing. For example, the “Oujodere” type is similar to the Deredere type but they are calmer and act more mature. On the other hand, the “Megadere” type is the exaggerated version of the Deredere characters. We will get into more details about them in a bit.
To make things crystal clear, here is a list of the most popular Deredere characters in the anime world:
- Chiyo Sakura from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
- Rinko Yamato from Ore Monogatari
- Hotaru Ichijo from Non Non Biyori
- Kouko “Roboko” Kaga from Golden Time
- Meiko “Menma” Honma from Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
- Ako Tamaki from Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?
- Rikka Takanashi from Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
- Chiho Sasaki from Hataraku Maou-sama!
- Tamaki Suou from Ouran Koukou Host Club
- Elizabeth Midford from Black Butler.
Himedere

Himedere is a compound noun composed of the abbreviation “hime” which can be translated into “princess“, and “deredere” which is the Japanese word for “lovey-dovey.“
A Himedere character is a person with a Princess complex. She views herself as royalty and demands that those around her, especially her crush, treat her like such.
Acting all high and mighty and prideful at all times, it can be quite difficult to deal with her. Oh and sometimes, a girl acting like that might actually be a real princess.
They demand to be worshiped, admired, they believe they are in a position of power and that all the people around them are inferior. She likes to use the word “Muchi” a lot which means bug.
When something needs to be done, it is certainly not them that will be doing it, they force others to do it for them. Giving orders is their hobby.
They are selfish people who put themselves above all. That’s usually the rule, however, when their crush is involved they might make an exception and think about him first.
They always thrive for perfection. Success is a must, they are allergic to failure and that doesn’t just apply to them, all the people affiliated with them must aim for the same.

As you might have realized, that’s not a personality that you can consider normal, it sounds more like mental illness. All the Himedere should have experienced something traumatic in their past that made insecurities blossom in their minds.
So be prepared for a nice flashback during the anime/manga meant to be the explanation of their current behavior.
The only people who are able to stick by them are those who know what the Himedere has been through. Nevertheless, it’s no easy task.
The Himedere tends to treat her friends unfairly so they usually let her step on them till they end up breaking and seeking revenge, while others stay loyal till the end.
When they are interacting with their love interest, there is absolutely no way they will ever accept their feelings. Constantly rejecting him, even insulting him, they end up lying to themselves about their emotions.
Here are some Himedere characters:
- Erina Nakiri from Food Wars!
- Sena Kashiwazaki from Haganai
- Lilith Bristol from Absolute Duo
- Beatrice from Re: Zero
- Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Satsuki Kiryuin from Kill La Kill
- Ayano Kannagi from Kaze No Stigma
- Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Cornelia Li Britannia from Code Geass
- Umaru Doma from Himouto! Umaru-chan
Kamidere
Now let’s move on to “Kamidere”, “Kami” means “God”, so here we have a character with a God complex, it’s the exaggerated version of Himedere. They are more ambitious, more power-thirsty, and obnoxious. Oh, and they can also be guys.

The most popular Kamidere characters are:
- Teruhashi Kokomi – The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.
- Naoi Ayato – Angel Beats!
- Mio Isurugi – MM!
- Lelouch Lamperouge – Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion
- Father – Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Dio Brando – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
- Light Yagami – Death Note
Oujodere

“Oujodere” is yet another version of Himedere, however, they are their mature version. “Oujo” also means princess but sometimes it can be used to refer to a “Lady”. So an Oujodere is a lady-like character. Impeccable and noble, she is no spoiled brat like the other two.
Examples of Oujodere characters would be:
- Mitsuyo Fujioka from Another
- Hotarubi from Basilisk
- Fabiola Iglesias from Black Lagoon
- Nunnally Lamperouge from Code Geass
Oujidere
Finally, there is a male version of this type of Dere to refer to the characters with a Prince complex. They act exactly like a Himedere but in the body of a man. They are called “Oujidere”, “Ouji” is the word for Prince.

As for the Oujideres we have:
- Echizen Ryouma from Prince of Tennis
- Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon
- Tachibana Makoto from Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
- Usui Takumi from Maid-Sama!
- Kashima Yuu from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki
- Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z
- Oikawa Tooru from Haikyuu!
- Kuchiki Byakuya from Bleach
- Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler
Megadere

“Megadere” are the creepy types of characters that are absolutely attached to an abnormal degree with their crush. They can fangirl or fanboy over them. It’s not unusual to see them turn into stalkers, take secret photos of their love interest, and do other stuff.
They can have a collection of items they collected and come up with plans to get closer to him and destroy any kind of competition they can face. They can also show some very subtle outlandish tendencies.
There is no real meaning to the word Megadere. This is only theoretical but the word “Megane” which means glasses combined with Deredere which means lovey-dovey could be referring, and that’s a long stretch, to “heart eyes“.
You know, when hearts pop out of the character’s eyes when they see their beloved. They exclude all the bad in him and see only pure perfection.
Another theory can be driven from the English word “Mega” and to be honest, I think this one makes more sense. Megadere would translate to huge lovey-dovey, a super exaggerated version of Deredere.
Those types of characters don’t even try to hide their intentions. They wear their admiration to their crush like a medal of honor. Everyone knows who they are interested in, even the said character.
Everything they do is meant to draw attention to themselves to steer the interest of their targets and they will always find ways to spend more and more time with them.
They are not shy in any way. Hugging, kissing, cuddling, pampering, and any kind of open act of affection are okay, even following them everywhere they go.
Their biggest fantasy, their ultimate dream is to make their crush love them back. If they can start dating, Earth would become a paradise.
Since that rarely happens, all they can do is imagine what it would be like to be with them, to marry them and build a family with them
Now they might be obsessive to an abnormal extent but even they have limits. They will never go as far as hurting them or causing them any pain. Also, they are reluctant to manipulate them, they want their feelings to be true and pure. They can even sometimes be satisfied with just the feeling that they have towards him or her.
The most known Megadere characters are:
- Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail
- Palm Siberia from Hunter×Hunter
- Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto
- Albedo from Overlord
- Chiyo Yumehara from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
Megaundere

A variation of Megadere would be a “Megaundere.” It’s a mix between megadere and undere. So as a literal translation Mega=big, Un=yes, and Dere=lovey-Dovey.
Just like a Megadere, they are head over heels for their crush. No one is better than them, no one can surpass them, they have no faults, no bad qualities, they are gods descended on Earth.
The major difference is that they are overly weak when it comes to dealing directly with their love interest. They are submissive to the point they can willingly turn into their personal slaves and be happy about it.
They are the easier characters to manipulate and the bad guys tend to take advantage of them. There are cases where they can also be humiliated.
The Megaunderes of the anime universe are:
- Misa Amane from Death Note
- Grelle Sutcliff from Black Butler
- Sakura Haruno from Naruto
Tsundere / Kiredere

Tsunderes are little denial monsters who always act in an awful way toward the one they are interested in order to hide their true feelings from him/her or even maybe from themselves. They are kings of sarcasm and intense mood swingers.
Tsundere is the abbreviation of “tsuntsun” which can be defined as cranky or short-tempered and deredere, you know already what it means, Lovey-dovey.
When the word was first invented, Tsundere was used to define a character with an extremely harsh personality who would slowly open up as the story unfolds.
Since this type of character was very common, it quickly became a cliché that would fit any person who would sometimes act cold and then soft.
So we have two types of Tsundere meaning, the classic one that I just described and the modern one, the one we are used to now.
As I said before, those types of characters have the tendency to pretend not to like the person they are in love with, although it’s super obvious and everyone knows how they really feel
They will act very sweet and do some affectionate guests toward them like making them lunch or something like this and then insist in saying it is not an act of love.
Deep down they know how they feel, they just refuse to accept it most of the time because it would hurt their pride. They are just lying to themselves.

When someone decides to confront them and throw the facts at their face they will just shut them up, turn around and run away as if their lives depend on it.
The phrase that you will probably hear the most coming out of their mouth would be “It’s not like I like you or anything!” and they will refer to their crush by probably using the word “Baka” which means dense in English.
Tsundere all have a huge ego. Their entire attitude is because their pride will not let them be beneath anyone and confessing your feelings is considered an act of weakness in their eyes. In the end, it’s just a coping mechanism to defend themselves emotionally.
Tsundere is often categorized along himedere, oujidere, and kamidere, since they share that super and conceited side.
The biggest difference is that Tsundere’s characters are not as strong as the other three. Any offensive comment will hurt them and they won’t know how to make a strong comeback to the person who is technically insulting them.
A lot of people think they can be aggressive people, however, they are not, that’s not their nature.
Due to that soft side of theirs, they have trouble dealing with embarrassment and humiliation and will turn to violence as a defense mechanism, but they will never act that way toward the people that they love.

Kiredere is another word for Tsundere with a tiny variation as they are a bit more extreme. Kiredere shares the same characteristics that Tsundere but in excess.
They adore their crush, however, their level of meanness is a bit too much but it comes from a place of love since their goal is to turn them into a better version of themselves.
Now fun fact, even if a tsundere ends up confessing to their crush, they will continue to act the same way although they don’t have anything to hide anymore.
This is all for the sake of the show since their charm as anime characters come from their pesky personalities. If they change then that’s it for the character.
Tsundere characters are made to attract viewers since they are extremely popular, we tend to feel affection toward them and they add that pinch of humor and laughter that we all appreciate and of course some nice old drama.
Here are the top ten Tsundere Characters of the anime world:
- Inuyasha from Inuyasha
- Hirotaka Nifuji from Wotakoi
- Chitoge Kirisaki from Nisekoi
- Uryu Ishida from Bleach
- Saitama from One-Punch Man
- Taiga Aisaka from Toradora!
- Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket
- Levi Ackerman from Attack On Titan
- Isla from Plastic Memories
- Erina Nakiri from Food Wars!
Yandere / Yeredere

Yandere is composed of the character “yan” which comes from the word “yanderu” which translates into “to be mentally sick” and “dere” which means “lovey-dovey“. Yeredere is another word from Yandere with more extreme traits.
Yandere are characters who are in complete awe of their crush. They are infatuated with him or her, and entirely devoted. The people around them would often say that love made them blind, made them lose some screws, and turned them into crazy people.
Just for info, they might appear completely crazy for some but Yandere characters do not suffer from any kind of mental illness.
Attached to that special one to an abnormal degree, they can become very possessive. They will learn everything there is to know about the person and turn into the perfect match for them.
They can go even further and act in very immoral ways while ignoring the consequences of their actions. They don’t care who they will hurt in the process as long as they get what they want.
Yanderes can be divided into two different classes. The first class are those who are meant to be a romantic crush and the second class are the characters who are created to shock us.

Love trope
The ultimate goal of the Love Trope is to build an indestructible bond with the one they love. They are often compared to megadere but the major difference between them is that for Yandere their emotion, their love, is not enough, they want more.
They will do everything in their power to make the one they like infatuated with them and once they get him they will never, ever, let go.
If a member of the Love trope is not in love at the moment, she will seem perfectly normal. Her traits manifest when love blossoms in their hearts.
Surprisingly, they don’t think their loved one is perfect, they believe it’s their role to make him or her perfect using the power of their love. They are romantic characters that will never cheat and divorce is out of the question.
Shock trope
The “shock trope” isn’t very different from the “love trope,” it’s just that what drives them, their motives differ.
Due to deeply rooted insecurities, they doubt their feelings as well as their loved ones. They can also act out because they are lonely or because they are just selfish. Their mental instability will often manifest as intense jealousy.
A lot of them were designed just to make the life of their crush difficult, painful even to entertain the watchers.
Here are the different types of Yandere:
- Harmless | Mugaigata
- Obsession | Shuuchakugata
- Stalker | Sutookaagata
- Self-Sacrifice | Jiko-giseigata
- Dependence | Izongata
- Monopoly | Dokusengata
- Worship | Suuhaigata
- Manipulative | Sousatekigata
- Training | Choukyougata
- Loneliness Induction | Koritsu yuudougata
- Restraints | Sokubakugata
- Domestic Violence | DVgata

- Double Suicide | Shinjuugata
- Final | Shuumatsugata
- Delusion | Mousougata
- Wrong Idea | Kanchigaigata

- Kaede Fuyou from Shuffle
- Griffith from Berserk
- Yukako Yamagishi from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable
- Satou from Happy Sugar Life
Dandere / Danredere

Here come the shy and introverted characters that you forget exist because of how quiet they are. They are actually afraid to say a word believing that they will most probably cause trouble to themselves and maybe others if they do.
Because they don’t even voice their minds or their feelings you will most probably view them are cold. However, if you manage to break their barriers and make them comfortable, they will turn out to be the sweetest people you ever met.
The “dan” comes from the word “danmari” in Japanese which means “silence“, and the “dere“.
Now danmari is extracted from the word damaru=”to stay quiet.”Damaru is often used imperatively by adding nasai after it. You must have heard that phrase a million times by now: Damari nasai! which means Shut up!

A dandere will never speak to you first. You are the one who needs to do the first step or more exactly the first hundreds of steps. That character will have trouble expressing her or himself, panicking, or speaking in whispers.
Since they do not feel comfortable around people, they will intentionally distance themselves thus you will realize that they may lack true friends or friends in general as a matter of fact. But they actually want bonds, even romantic ones but will be too shy to pursue their desires.
They can’t handle criticism, the poor things already feel inferior, no need to add to their plate, they know that there is something wrong with them without telling them.
A variation of Dandere would be Danredere. “Dan” comes from “danmari” which means “silence,” and “re” refers to “deredere” and we have one more “dere” at the end.
This time, it’s not the extreme version of the word, Danredere are actually less timid than the Danderes. If anyone will try to get close to them and they get attached they will turn into Derederes.
The Danderes of the anime universe are:
- Atsushi Murasakibara From Kuroko No Basket
- Ami Mizuno From Sailor Moon
- Nadeko Sengoku From Bakemonogatari
- Mikuru Asahina From The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Crona From Soul Eater
- Sawako Kuronuma From Kimi Ni Todoke
- Tsukimi Kurashita From Princess Jellyfish
- Rikka Takanashi From Chūnibyō Demo Koi Ga Shitai!
- Mio Akiyama From K-On!
- Hinata Hyuga From Naruto
Kuudere / Coodere / Kuutsundere

Don’t get too depressed, the cynical one is here. Cold, calm, stoic, and collected, a Kuurede is the type of character to never panic and always stay lucid and rational in any situation.
You won’t be able to see any emotion getting out of her or him. Their depressing expressions rarely change. It could be that they are hiding their feelings or don’t have any, to begin with.
“Kuu” comes from “kuuru“, so “cool” in English. In Japan, it can also be referring to the chill type of people with a slight badass vibe to them. Their disinterest and lack of care about what can be happening around them can be viewed as impressive, especially in action or horror anime.
They can be very blunt at times since they don’t care about the feelings of others. But no matter how harsh they can be, know that deep inside them resides a kind heart who doesn’t mean to hurt anyone, especially those they hold dear.
All that coldness was built toward one goal, to protect their kind, sweet and weak self that is dormant inside them.
They are expressionless, they desperately lack a sense of humor, and are always serious and straight to the point. A lot of them are highly intelligent with extraordinary IQs.
It might be hard, but getting them to open up to you is not impossible. If you are lucky you might even be able to witness a quick sweet smile. Here, I’m talking from a friend’s perspective. When the crush is involved it’s a different story.
The love interest already broke the necessary barrier since they are now in love with them, at this point, a Kuudere can completely break down to the state where she might even shout her feelings out loud in a teary confession.

That’s the only burst of emotion we might get out of them, otherwise, they will stay monotone, will never look especially happy, they don’t get excited over anything, even surprises don’t work on them. Although they feel sadness and anger it never shows. In a way, they act like robots.
Feelings are like a weakness for them, they are afraid to show them to anyone, their crush included.
They don’t like to lead but are often pushed to take control, well in the end they fit the role since they are able to analyze and act accordingly objectively.
They are not sociable at all, however, they are deeply respected, looked up to, and somehow attract people towards them. The extroverts in most cases.
They are not shy nor timid, they are strong individuals who are fully aware of what they are capable of and give their 100% at all times.
They chose not to talk to others because they view it as a drag, not having friends is perfectly okay for them, they like tranquility and their comfort zone.
Some of them do have a mental illness to explain their personalities, a neurological disability to be exact. It turns them into robot-like individuals with communication disorders.
A variation of Kuudere is Coodere, people that start off cool and then turn into the lovey-dovey side of them. And FYI “Coo” is not from the word “Cool” but from the word “Cold”.
We also have the Kuutsunderes, they are a mix between a Kuudere and Tsundere. “Kuu” is from “kuuru” which translates to “cool“, “tsun” comes from “tsuntsun” meaning “irritable“, and the “dere” well, you know…
So Kuutsunderes do not hide their emotions behind a wall of sarcasm like Tsunderes, they are actually honest with their feelings and don’t mind showing them. They don’t have mood swings either.
The types of Kuutsundere are the “Temperic Type” and the “Apathetic Type.” The “Temperic Type” is poised and level-headed with a pinch of a temper.
The “Apathetic Type” are completely emotionless, are adept at sarcasm, harsh, rude, and tactless.
The best Kuudere anime characters are:
- Annie Leonhardt From Attack On Titan
- Sucy Manbavaran From Little Witch Academia
- Satsuki Kiryuin From Kill La Kill
- Jotaro Kujo From Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
- Shoto Torodoki From My Hero Academia
- Boa Hancock From One Piece
- Rei Ayanami From Evangelion
- Piccolo From Dragon Ball
- Yuki Nagato From The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Akemi Homura From Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Bakadere

A “Bakadere” can be directly spotted. They are the type of characters who keep falling down, doing embarrassing stuff, they are super clumsy and like to act like foolish for some reason. And common sense is not something that you will find in them.
I guess you already knew that taking into consideration the title they were given. We all heard the word a million times in all and every anime that was ever created, Baka which means fool.
Bakaderes have a lot of qualities, however, their extreme foolishness takes the spotlight and you rarely ever realize that they are not that bad.
They are very kind characters who act and think like kids. They will always need someone to look after them.
The definition of airheads, they dive head first into any situation without thinking twice about it, scratch that without thinking once about it. So as expected the results are not the best for them but are absolutely hilarious for us.

However, don’t categorize them as complete dense, some of them are actually smart but are just a bit silly. And well, others can be just acting thinking it might be cute. And I’ll give it to them, it is actually super cute at times.
Do you know who the Bakaderes of the anime world are? Well, I can think of some:
- Sheele from Akame Ga Kill
- Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist
- Issac Dian from Baccano!
- Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon
- Kon from Bleach
- Minoru Mineta from My Hero Academia
- Lavi from D. Gray-Man
- Shiro from Deadman Wonderland
- Son Goku from Dragon Ball
- Ginrou from Dr. Stone
- Kisaragi from Elfen Lied
Darudere

Daruderes are super lazy characters that don’t have the patience to even move a finger. They are dull, everything is a drag for them, and they will never think of doing something unless asked forcefully.
They will never listen to a word you say and act as they see fit. When they decide that they have enough energy to help, they will make you wish you didn’t, considering they will never let you forget it.
“Daru” is a derivative of the word “Darui” and Darui can be translated to “Sluggish”. That’s exactly the word from them really, if you leave them alone, you will see them sitting for hours staring at nothing like this normal.
You’ll see a bit of energy and vigor when their crush decides to talk to them or asks them to do something. They will of course first refuse and then tell them that they will do it with a bothered look on their face.
Complaining is their second name. If they are forced to act or help, they will fulfill the task but they won’t shut up about it during the whole process.
Extremely nonchalant, they won’t even try to show some emotion to the person they love, that would be too much trouble.
The most popular Darudere are:
- Oreki Houtarou from Hyouka
- Shu Sakamaki from Diabolic Lovers
- Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara
- Hatsuharu Sohma from Fruit Basket
- Sakata Gintoki from Gintama
- Kenma Kozume from Haikyuu!!
- Atsushi Murasakibara from Kurorko no Basket
- Shikamaru Nara from Naruto
- Raynesia from Log Horizon
- Senri Shike from Vampire Knight
Utsudere

Utsudere and the less extreme type of Tsundere characters. They are depressed all the time it’s just that their level of depression is less exaggerated although “Utsu” can literally be translated to depression in English
The biggest difference is that they have the need to show how sad they are as if they are forcing you to be just as miserable as they are. They are super gloomy people but most of the time they have a very good reason to be.
As you can imagine, the reasons aren’t really nice. They might have been the victims of bullying, maybe they were in a traumatic accident or they were abused by their parents. Maybe they lost someone they loved or they just might have some kind of mental illness.
Most Utsuderes weren’t actually like this before. A lot of them started off as very cheery people and changed because of the horrible things that happened to them in their lives.
And at least they might also manage to move forward and revert to their former self with the help of the people who are here for them.
Here are some of the most known Utsudere right now:
- Rei Kiriyama from 3-gatsu no Lion
- C.C. from Code Geass
- Cosette D’Auvergne from Cossette no Shouzou
- Tanya Akurou from Darker than Black
- Miranda Lotto from D. Gray-Man
- Lucy from Elgen Lied
- Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail
- Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan
- Zelgadris Graywords from Slayers
- Crona Gorgon from Soul Eater
Kitikudere / Thugdere

Quick, run away, here come the bullies. Deranged are people who love to mistreat and traumatize people, even the ones they have a crush on. Might it be mental or physical, their abuse is extreme. And they go this far just to hide how they truly feel.
“Kitiku” is the Japanese word for savage and “Thug” is the English word for “brute“. Villains through and through, surprisingly they often appear as protagonists or be the ones to mistreat the MC. They have their moments of kindness of course.
Ruder than Tsunderes, lovers of curse words, but less machiavellian than Yandere, they might have the guts to kill someone, they just put a line between the innocent and the people they like.
Because of their violent character, you can imagine that no one wants to be around them except if they like to be punched out of nowhere when they lose it.
The only people they will get along with are the ones who are like them, despicable thugs. Those characters will most probably be gang members or leaders, they can be depicted as delinquents or a person that is part of the mafia, well you got the gist of it.

Because of the dangerous life that they lead and the dangerous people that they hang out with they are always dragged into or cause dire situations no one wants to be in.
They know that the innocent that will stay close to them will be caught in the crossfire so they intentionally push them away in a very harsh way to make sure they stay safe.
Even if it hurts like hell, they will be horrible to the one they love for their sake although they might never realize that and hate them for it.
At some point, they can receive a wake-up call and decide that they want to leave that side of themselves behind, that they want to have a normal life with the people they love.
Although the violent behavior is difficult to get rid of, maybe just as much as the people who want to always drag you down and make you come back into the darkness are, they are at least trying.
Now let’s move on to the waited list of those said characters:
- Brawler from Akuda Drive
- Oga Tatsumi from Beelzebub
- Revy from Black Lagoon
- Katsuki Bakugou from My Hero Academia
- Kawaki from Boruto
- Nami from One Piece
- Alice Baskerville from Pandora Hearts
- Levi from Attack on Titan
- Taiga Aisaka from Toradora!
Bokodere

“Bokoru” is a Japanese word that means “To beat someone”, however, the characters who are labeled as Bokoderes are shy people who can’t deal with the embarrassment or the pressure of being around the one they like and lash out with punches.
It’s a reflex, they are innocent characters who normally wouldn’t hurt a fly, they just can’t help it. As they get closer to the one they love and get more comfortable around them, they will slowly start to contain themselves and refrain from hitting relentlessly.
It was actually an anime character that became the inspiration for this word, that character was Mahiru Inami from Working!!. Her epic reactions stood out and deserved to have a name for themselves and that’s how Bokodere was born.
Marui suffers from androphobia, a phobia of men. This was triggered due to the deep psychological trauma caused by her father. If a guy approaches her, she will punch him with all her strength and she is no weak girl. But she does know that not all men are bad.
Unable to stop herself most of the time, it pains her to cause pain to others and know that they do not deserve it.
Let’s move on with a quick list of Bokoderes:
- Noelle Silva from Black Clover
- Aki Adagaki from Masamune-kun no Revenge

Mayadere

Beware of Mayadere, they are dark characters, evil souls with a liking for cruelty. When they will appear in the series, they will debut as antagonists, however, you can expect him or them to fall in love with the MC and come over to his side, not because they found the good in them but because they want to be closer to their crush.
They will make themselves super helpful with the goal of becoming indispensable for their love interest. They will try to hide their true self, try to act kinder, more loveable, they will be faking a personality that is not theirs.
That’s a common trait since “Maya” is a Japanese word that comes from “mayakashi“. It can be translated in multiple ways, but of course, the meaning is still the same. The most common translation would be: phony, fake and dishonest.
Maya can also come from the word “ma yaka su” which translates into “to cheat”, “to scam” or “to trick”.
Double-faced snakes that only want to sabotage the MCs mission, somehow they will manage to make friends with the good guys and end up having a crush on the leader.
Don’t get me wrong, having a little thing for someone doesn’t mean they will miraculously turn nice, no, those things take time and they will act as awful as ever in the meantime. But it’s not uncommon for them to turn into saints at some point.

The Mayadere will have the chance to join the team of their loved ones. Maybe they were forced or maybe it was necessary to fight a common enemy.
However, when their common interest disappears, the mayadere will stay with the love interest and another villain appears or they will take their place as the main antagonist.
They are unpredictable and that’s part of their charm. But since feelings developed they might fake the fact that they are using their full force in a fight to be defeated or at least not hurt the hero.
When forced to hang in the opposite team, some of them can turn into Tsunderes. They will result in insults and bullying, even humiliating the one they like.
The best situation of the mayadere is when their enemies desperately need their help. They will make the one they like beg for their assistance or if they are in mortal danger, they will jump in without hesitation to save them.
While some will try to forcibly change themselves to fit with the hero or even fake a personality to be able to stay by their side, others will turn out to have good morals, to begin with, and will get nicer and nicer as she/he travels with the good guys.
The top ten Mayaderes are:
- Esdeath from Akame Ga Kill
- Sailor Galaxia from Sailor Moon
- Train Heartnet from Black Cat
- Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck from Bleach
- Orochimaru from Naruto
- Langris Vaude from Black Clover
- Minerva Orland from Fairy Tail
- Sesshoumaru from Inuyasha
- Minene Uryuu from Future Diary
- Pudding Charlotte from One Piece
Nyandere

Nyan is the Japanese sound of cats, so meow if you want. Very easy to describe, Nyanderes are cat-like characters or people who are completely obsessed with cats. They worship them, treat them better than humans, and can’t help but run to them to pet them if they come across one.
They have the tendency to add Nyan at the end of every one of their sentences. Others can actually have some cat traits like ears, those characters are called Nekojin, Neko meaning cat in Japanese.
One thing that I realized, some of those characters are extremely beautiful and very prideful, just like their cat’s alter ego.
The most perfect Nyanderes are:
- Power from Chainsaw Man
- Karin from Dragon Ball
- Tamaki Kotatsu from Fire Force
- Lisanna Strauss from Fairy Tail
- Killua Zaoldyeck from Hunter X Hunter
- Neko from K
- Nyanta from Log Horizon
- Madara from Natsume’s Book of Friends
- Kuro from Servamp
- Blair from Soul Eater
- Ichigo Momomiya from Tokyo Mew Mew
Byoukidere

Byoukidere, there is absolutely no nice way to put it, but they are pitiful characters with golden hearts who are suffering from a handicap and most commonly a fatal disease and don’t have much time to live. The Byouki part of the word means illness.
Very weak physically, they are in and out of hospitals, can’t strain themselves, are shown in wheelchairs, and can’t move around freely. They are feeble people who always need someone’s assistance.
Since they know what is the horrible fate that is waiting for them, they try to do some genuine good before leaving this Earth and will end up being the strength of their loved ones.
Mentally, they are stronger than anyone and always keep a smile on their face. Although it might be a fake one at times.
Most of them will end up dead and it will be the biggest tragedy of the hero’s life. Others very rarely survive and will end up with their loved ones.
Here are some Byoukidere of the animeverse:
- Yui from Angel Beats
- Hisana Kuchiki from bleach

- Yuuki Konno From Sword Art Online
Sadodere

Disturbed sadists of the worst kind, those kinds of characters tend to be a bit excited about seeing some get hurt especially if it’s because of them. They are said to be a “mean tease” who love to torture their crush relentlessly.
Sado comes from the word sadist, you know what it means, the word speaks for itself.
Troublemakers with sketchy personalities, they love to play with the feelings of others. It gives them the greatest feeling of pleasure. Even humiliating the one they love is ecstasy.
Violent, merciless, mean, cruel, sometimes when they go overboard they feel guilty but that doesn’t stop them from doing it again because the result is worth it.
They are especially attracted to masodere, masochists who love pain and are addicted to the way they treat them. I don’t know who’s the most disturbed here.
Sadodere list, here it comes:
- Esdeath from Akame Ga Kill
- Doctor from Akudama Drive
- Karma Akabane from Assassination Classroom
- Ladd Russo from Baccano!
- Oga Misaki from Beelzebub
- Solid Silva from Black Clover
- Hollow Ichigo from Bleach
- Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia
- Kosuke Kira from BTOOOM!
- Akiko Yosano from Bungou Stray Dogs
- Flare Corona from Fairy Tail
Masodere

Masodere is the opposite of Sadodere. Addict to pain, they love to be hurt might it be physically or mentally. Humiliation is a rare pleasure, being stepped on is paradise, and they seek more and more intense feelings.
I am stating the obvious, but I’ll say it anyway. Maso comes from the word masochist and you know what a masochist is. That term was specially created to become the counterpart of Sadodere, it’s fairly recent.
Just like Sadodere, they have a slightly different side, especially when you are giving them what they want and it’s even more intense when it’s their love interest that is inflicting the punishment.
The famous Masodere are:
- Azusa Mukami from Diabolik Lovers
- Virgo from Fairy Tail
- Ayame Sarutobi from Gintama
- Akeno Himejima from High School DxD
- Midari Ikishima from Kakegurui
- Ira Gamagoori from Kill La Kill

- Darkness from Konosuba
- Ruby Toujo from Rosario to Vampire
- Shunsuke Imaizumi from Yowamushi Pedal
Hiyakasudere / Teasedere / Smugdere

Other words for “Hiyakasudere,” are “Teasedere” and “Smugdere.” As the title suggests, they like to tease the ones they like and are very flirty characters.
They always have their charm mode on and not just for their crush but for everyone looking at them. Very attractive, they are a feast for the eyes. They love the spotlight, the attention, the compliments.
The shy and easily embarrassed characters are their targets, they adore playing with their weakness.
The literal definition of the word “hiyakasu” is “to banter”, “to make fun of”, and “to tease”. They are mischievous pros at sarcasm, it’s their most deadly weapon.
They have traits from multiple other Dere like Erodere, Tsundere, and Himedere and the best way to be able to distinguish them is to get a clear image of those characters. A quick list might just do the trick, so let’s get right into it:
- Leone from Akame Ga Kill
- Akabane Karma from Assassination Classroom
- Miria Harvent from Baccano!
- Rinslet Walker from Black Cat
- Vanessa Enoteca from Black Clover
- Emi Fukukado / Ms. Joke from My Hero Academia
- Osamu Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs
- Zero Two from Darling on the Franxx
- Laito Sakamaki from Diabolik Lover
- Tooru Oikawa from Haikyuu!!
- Satoshi Fukube form Hyouka

- Usui Takumi from Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
Goudere

If I were you, I would try to get a Goudere to fall in love with me right this instant. Completely devoted to you, if they think you want something, even if the whole world tries to stop them, they will get it for you.
You don’t even need to ask for anything, they will know and decide to act on their own. For your sake, they will turn into forces of nature and hand you your every desire on a golden plate.
They will go overboard, treat you better than gods and even if you tell them it’s too much, they will continue to do the same.
Now the downside is that they try to analyze what would be best for their loved ones, thus creating awkward or hilarious situations that will put that person in trouble most of the time.
The “Gou” in Goudere comes from the Japanese word “Gougou” which means “Boisterous” in English.
Others believe it comes from “Gouki” which translates into “Fortitude” or also “Gou oni” which means “Strong Demon”

This word as well was invented by the mangaka that wrote the comedy series called “Gou-Dere Bishoujo Nigihara Sora” in 2008
A student had a crush on a fictional character and managed to bring it to life. Because of this miraculous feat, the girl that came to life thanks to him viewed him as a god amongst men and the person that should rule this new world.
The boy told her that he is so bad with women that he was never able to get a girlfriend so she got him some . We are going to say that it’s sweet, but her methods are another story.
Very extreme in everything that she does, even if the boy would beg her to stop, she’ll continue to do what she thinks is best for him until she gets him into atrocious situations that are hilarious for us.
So in short, Goudere are considered to be overachievers who will force random people to do their bidding to please their crush.
They will interpret your nonverbal cues, your words, your movement and determine what it is that you want, although, it never works.
For example, if you dropped a comment, “that car is nice”, the Goudere might decide to steal it and bring it to you the second day. You want candy? Let’s buy the entire store.
Mentally, they are super strong, overpowered even, overconfident and determined, they use their qualities to their advantage to get others to obey them.
Who are the Goudere in anime?
- Soifon from Bleach
- Komui Lee from D. Gray-Man
- Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail
- Jaken from Inuyasha
- Karin from Naruto Shippuuden
- Jibril from No Game No Life
- Albedo from Overloard
- Hina from Plunder
- Diablo from that Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
- Suzu Kanade from Ayakashi Triangle
Hajidere

“Haji” is a word in itself and it means “embarrassment. So, a Hajidere is one of those common shy characters, however, that shyness triple, no quadruples when the one they are interested in appears on the scene.
The symptoms of nervousness are the same for everyone right? So, when the crush walks in, the Hajidere can start sweating, breathing in a weird and fast way, stutter when spoken to, ah and she will also turn into a ripe tomato.
In front of anybody else, the shyness disappears, and her true self comes out, sociable, fun, confident, talkative, and sweet.
To avoid turning into a mess in front of the one they like, they tend to avoid them, keep the conversation to a minimum but will follow them around discreetly, spy on them, and stuff like that.
Able to faint if their crush gets too close, you imagine how difficult it must be for them to try and confess. So, if you know a Hajidere is interested and you are as well, make the first move if you don’t want to wait forever.
Here are some Hajidere characters:
- Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto
- Mimosa Vermillion from Black Clover
- Izuku Midoriya/Deku from My Hero Academia
- Ryou Fujibayashi from Clannad
- Tadashi Yamaguchi from Haikyuu!!
- Kasaki Onodera from Nisekoi
- Hancock Boa from One Piece
- Shinji Ikari from Evangelion
- Shun Akido from the Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
Hinedere / Hinodere

Hinedere or Hinodere are arrogant characters who see the world in black and white. Super cynical, they are depressing to be around and act very cold towards anyone, even the one they like.
“Hine” comes from the word “Hineru” which can mean “To twist”, “To turn”, “To puzzle over” or “To defeat easily”.
Even if they are very negative people, and are not usually nice to people, if the person they like manages to break the cold shell that engulfs them, they will find beneath a soft soul that is actually caring.
You might confuse them with oujideres or himederes. The biggest difference is that they don’t want the attention.
They can easily be bothered by people, their ego gets in the way of socializing. Difficult to handle a lot of people will just turn their back on them.
The most famous Hinederes are:
- Koro-Sensei from Assassination Classroom
- Laymia from Beelzebub
- Noelle Silve from Black Clover

- Illumu Zaodyeck from Hunter X Hunter
- Kazuma Yagami from Kaze no Stigma
- Sanemi Shinazugawa from Demon Slayer
Nemuidere

The word “Nemui” in Nemuidere means “Sleepy” in Japanse. As their title suggests, a Nemuidere is a character that does nothing else but sleep. When they are awake, they’d always be super tired and it’s almost impossible to wake them up.
Their bed is their paradise and they will always try to get more time cuddled in it. They can fall asleep anywhere and it can be intentional or unintentional.
Like a Darudere, a Nemuidere will be depicted as extremely lazy. Everyone would say that it’s a shame they turned out like this because they would be people with high intelligence or with some prodigious talent in art that don’t use it because, well, sleeping is better.
It’s the MC, the guy they fall in love with, who will try to motivate them and punch them to get things done. Most of the time it doesn’t work but they will at least try.
The most popular Nemuidere are:
- Shouta Aizawa / Eraser Head from My Hero Academia
- Dorothy Unsworth from Black Clover
- Kinu Sohma from Fruit Basket Another
- Phonsekal Laure from Tower of God

- Yasuko Takasu from Totadora
- Konata Izumi from Lucky☆Star
- Nemu Sanjou / Nemurin from Mahou Shoujo Isukei Keikaku
Kanedere

“Kane” means “money” in Japanese. Super straightforward, a Kanedere is a character that is in love with the green bills. Moves to get cash are perfectly legit even if it’s against the one they like.
Extremely greedy and stingy, they are gold diggers who live with one and only goal, to become rich or acquire a super high status.
The way they treat you depends on how much cash you’ll help them make. They use people, trick them, even rob them without mercy, and never feel guilty about it.
However, that disgusting habit cannot be broken but diminished if they find someone they like and people will start to like them more.
When we talk about Kanedere, I think the first character that came to mind for all of us is Nami from One Piece. If you take her as an example, she debuted in the series robbing Luffy and his crew.
Some other Kanederes are:
- Yuu Takeyama / Mt. Lady from My Hero Academia
- Maron from Dragon Ball
- Richard Buchanan / Hoteye from Fairy Tail
- Mei Mei from Jujutsu Kaisen
- Mitsune Konno from Love Hina
- Toua tokuchi from One Outs
- Deishuu Kaiki from Nisemonogatari
- Kimial Diehl from Soul Eater
- Ami Kawashima from Toradora!
- Seto Kaiba from Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters
Kekkondere

“Kekkon” is the Japanese word for “marriage.” So, Kekkonderes are characters who are obsessed, and obsessed is a weak word, on getting married.
They don’t even need to be in love with the person. They could have met them seconds ago and they would be all over them asking them to ask for their hand.
The thing is when they meet a person that makes their heart flutter even if it’s just for a sec they think that that’s their fated person and mistake those feelings for love.
The other person might not even be dating them and the Kekkondere would already be planning the perfect wedding with them.
They won’t let you wait to get married if you are with them, which means that it needs to happen this week. They will probably force you in a very creepy way.
If the person they like doesn’t like them back, the absurdity of their plans to make them reciprocate their feelings can be hilarious or super pitiful to the point where it hurts our hearts to see their desperate attempts.
The Kekkondere may have a fear of being abandoned or a fear of being alone, explaining their excessive desire to know that the said person will be with them forever. I hope they know that divorce does exist.
Other Kekkondere know how annoying and creepy they can be so they reject their crush on purpose to make sure they will never have to see that side of them.
Hopefully, when a Kekkondere finds their perfect match and that match falls for them, you can be sure that we will be attending one of the most beautiful weddings. Their marriage will probably be successful and they will live happily ever after.
A Kekkondere will be a perfect spouse who actually loves to take care of the house, the kids, and of course her husband.
The Kekkondere that I know of are:
- Emi Fukukado / Ms. Joke from My Hero Academia
- Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail
- Sakura Kirishima from Hundred
- Ayama from Inuyasha
- Narciso Annasui from JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken – Part 6: Stone Ocean
- Zenitsu Agatsuma from Demon Slayer
- Yuno Gasai from Future Diary
- Marika Tachibana from Nisekoi
- Lola from One Piece
- Daida from Ousama Ranking
Yottadere

“Yotta” means “drunk”. Those characters are addicted to alcohol. They are always drinking, but some of them have such a high tolerance that it is actually rare to see them drunk.
The normal ones always have a bottle in hand, are never sober, and break their addiction when they fall in love with someone.
Not all the Yottadere are the same. Different types exist, they can be stern and devoted or wild and immoral.
When they are drunk, it’s like there are different persons, their entire personality changes. And of course, everything they do while under the influence, they end up regretting.
The end result of their excessive drinking would be to lash out in anger or pass out somewhere.
When they fall in love, they will stop drinking from one day to another or on the contrary double their alcohol intake cuz they can’t comprehend the emotions that they are experiencing.
Here are some of the best Yottaderes:
- Cana Albarona from Fairy Tail
- Vanessa Enoteca from Black Clover
- Revy from Black Lagoon
- Matsumoto Rangiku from Bleach
- Deidoro Sakaki from My Hero Academia
- Cross Marian from D. Gray-Man
- Nia Honjou from Date A Live
- Tanaka Saeko from Haikyuu!!
- Shoko Ieiri from Jujutsu Kaisen
- Lord Georg von Seimens from Black Butler
- Tsunade Senju from Naruto
Dorodere / Doredere

A “Dorodere” or “Doredere” are the characters you should stay away from. They will at all be nice and sweet while inside of them they would be full of hatred and disdain towards you. Compared to them, Yanderes are real sweethearts.
They will talk behind your back, and act from the shadows to cause you harm. They will act the same toward their crush since they will see him as a person that is here to stop their evil plans or they can even be a distraction.
“Doro” comes from the Japanese word “dorodoro” which can be translated to muddled or confused.
Dark souls with twisted personalities, they are the most dangerous characters you will encounter. Disturbed and most probably suffering from some mental illness and some past trauma, you will never be able to trust a single word that comes out of their mouths.
When they are busted for who they really are, instead of trying to redeem themselves, they will try to get people to come over to their side. They will try to brainwash you into believing that they are in the right.
If they don’t manage to make their loved ones join them, they will enter rage mode and even try to dispose of them.
It’s not like they enjoy inflicting pain, it’s just that their level of loathing is so high that they want people to be as miserable as them.
If the story goes as the Dorodere wanted to, expect the anime to end in tragedy. All the characters who stood up against them, even their crush will probably end up dead or turn into their puppets.
The most dangerous Doroderes are:
- Kyuusaku Yumeno from Bungou Stray Dogs
- Alucard from Hellsing
- Kikyou from Inuyasha
- Yumemi Yumemite from Kakegurui
- Historia Reiss from Attack on Titan
- Xellos from Slayers
- Knives Millions from Trigun
Conclusion

As you might have realized during your read, an anime character doesn’t necessarily have just one “Dere” type under their belt. They can have multiple personalities making them fall into multiple categories.
Hope this blog helped you better understand the characters that you have been living with your entire life and maybe it will help you analyze the people who are around you and know who to trust and who to be wary of.
