Attack on Titan is probably the most famous anime of this year. The series contains excellent story writing, intense action scenes, character development, and outstanding animation. Is there anything else? Then I must say, the way they depict the mysteries, plot twists, and emotional moments (especially if one of your favorite characters dies). The opening minutes of this episode is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. The intense steam and the shocking appearance of a flayed giant bursting through a wall will leave you breathless. The episode then introduces the young trio of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, showcasing their close bond and shared aspirations.

Until a thunderous sound interrupts the peace, and the Colossal Titan, who looks like a giant sashimi, slowly rises above the wall, kicking it down and disappearing into the city. Hello Titans! Welcome to the Shingashima district, where the menu is an all-you-can-eat buffet!

After Mikasa fails to kill Reiner and Bertholdt, they transform into their titan forms. Eren engages in combat with Reiner in his titan form as well. The other members of the scouts focus on defeating Bertholdt’s titan form. While all of them focus on defeating Bertholdt’s colossal titan, they realize it’s futile because Bertholdt keeps giving off steam as they get closer to his nape. However, Eren does pretty well against Reiner’s titan form and he throws him to the ground using Annie’s technique. Later, Bertholdt’s titan falls on Eren and puts Eren’s victory against Reiner to dust.

18. The Town Where it all Began (Season 3, Episode 13)

This episode brings us back to the place where it all started. Had Wall Maria not been destroyed, Eren and his friends might have lived easier lives, however, that was not the case and this episode begins with the scouts moving to Shiganshina, the town where it all began. All of the members of the scouts are wearing hoods, that way Reiner, Bertholdt and Zeke cannot differentiate between Eren and the other members. 

As the members reach Shinigashina they realize that Reiner and Bertholdt are nowhere to be seen. So they focus on searching for them. That is when Armin comes up with the idea that they are hidden in the walls that border Shiganshina. Once they figure it out Reiner jumps out of the wall and he is attacked by Levi. However, he survives and transforms into his titan form.

17. The Other Side of the Wall (Season 3, Episode 22)

After the higher ups of Paradis were exposed to Grisha’s diaries and the truth of the world that they live in, they decide to make this knowledge known to the public. After that, a ceremony is held for the members of the scouts that made it back after recapturing Shiganshina.

As the members of the scouts are awarded medals, Eren touches Historia’s hand. As soon as Eren kisses Historia’s hand, he sees the future and the memories of his father. He doesn’t say anything but the other members of the scouts notice that he has a weird expression.

After the ceremony, the members of the scouts explore the land beyond the walls. As they are exploring they reach a shore and the members of the scouts start messing around at the beach, Eren points at the horizon of the beach and asks Armin, “If we kill all our enemies over there will we finally be free?”

16. Descent (Season 3, Episode 15)

This episode gives us a flashback from the time Eren plugs the hole in Wall Rose. While Reiner and Bertholdt are talking about turning into titans and stop Eren, Marco listens to their conversation. Reiner then pins him to the roof of a house and asks Annie to remove his gear and then they throw him towards a titan.

Reiner, Bertholdt and Zeke decide to put an end to this by taking Eren (the Founding Titan) back to Marley. After the Armored Titan is defeated, Reiner yells, which was a signal for Zeke to throw Bertholdt into the Shiganshina district

Armin tries to buy time by conversing with Bertholdt, however, it is in vain as Bertholdt tells him that they will only agree to talk things over if Scouts give Eren to them. Bertholdt then transforms into a titan and blows away the neighboring houses

15. The War Hammer Titan (Episode 65)

After Willy Tybur bids his family farewell, he explains to Theo Magath that he has to play a political move to showcase Eren as an enemy in front of the diplomats from different parts of the world. He explains that during the speech he will act as bait for Eren to show up. He also explains that he has to gain sympathy from the entire world and only he can do it.

Lara Tybur, the inheritor of the War Hammer Titan transforms into her titan form, however, before the transformation is complete Eren punches the War Hammer Titan. The Attack Titan and the War Hammer Titan engage in combat. Later, the War Hammer Titan overpowers the Attack Titan and defeats him. However, Mikasa catches the War Hammer Titan off guard and shoots lightning spears at the nape of the War Hammer Titan. 14. Wish (Season 3, Episode 7)

The members of the scouts invade the crystal cavern where Eren is held captive. Levi, Hange, and the other members of the scouts engage in combat against Kenny and his group. The scouts are successful in defeating Kenny’s squad. Rod Reiss, Historia’s father, forces her to inject herself with the titan serum and eat Eren to gain the powers of the Founding Titan.

However, Historia realizes that turning into a titan won’t solve anything as something prevents her from killing all titans so she refuses her father’s proposal and tries to unchain Eren. Disappointed by her choice to save Eren, Rod Reiss injects himself with the fluid and turns into a huge titan.

13. Attack Titan (Season 3, Episode 21)

After Eren Kruger kills the Marleyan soldiers, Kruger explains that he infiltrated the Marleyan military and started giving information to the Eldians under the alias “The Owl”. Grisha then demands an explanation for not saving his wife, Dina. Kruger explains that if he did, she would bear children for the rest of her life and would become a slave to the officials of Marley. Eren Kruger then asks Grisha to complete one last task, and that was to inherit the Attack Titan and save Armin and Mikasa.

In the present day, Eren comes to realize that he has 8 more years left to live because of the curse of Ymir. Later, Eren realizes that he was able to use the powers of the Founding Titan despite not being related to the royal blood because he came in contact with Dina Fritz’s titan and Dina Fritz happened to be a member of the royal family. He also keeps this a secret because he doesn’t want the officials of Paradis to use Historia.

12. Scream (Season 2, Episode 12)

In this episode, Eren sees Dina Fritz’s titan form aka the titan that ate his mother. Eren is enraged and tries to transform into a titan. However, he is unsuccessful and proceeds to face the smiling titan on his own. He screams and tries punching Dina Fritz’s titan, as soon as his fists touch Dina Fritz’s palm, all of the other titans proceed to attack the smiling titan and kill her. Eren realizes that he is the coordinate.

Reiner comes to the conclusion that he is the worst person to have this power because of his suicidal nature. Erwin is extremely delighted with this mission and considers it to be a success because it has brought him closer to discovering the truth of the world that he lives in.

 At the walls of the Shiganshina district, Zeke makes his first human appearance. 

11. Savagery (Season 4, Episode 14)

Mikasa, Armin and Gabi sit at the table waiting for Eren. As soon as Eren shows up, he raises his right hand which has a cut on it. He does so to threaten them. Armin and Mikasa question Eren’s choice at Libero where he killed a lot of innocent people. They ask him if he was forced by Zeke or Yelena to make such a decision, however, Eren tells them that no one forced him and that he did it of his own free will.

He also explains that he knows that Armin visits Annie and questions if he does it of his own free will or if he does it because of Bertholdt. He also explains that the reason that Mikasa is so strong is because of the Ackerman trait to protect the Founding Titan. This was his reasoning for Mikasa’s love for him. He tells Mikasa that he has always hated her. After listening to this, Armin charges at Eren but Eren proceeds to beat Armin up.
In the forest where Zeke was under Levi’s surveillance, Levi watches all of his subordinates turn into titans. Levi proceeds to kill his subordinates and then proceeds to fight Zeke. Levi defeats Zeke and pulls his body onto a wagon.

10. Assault (Season 4, Episode 7)

After Eren defeats the war hammer titan, Falco checks up on Reiner and learns that he is alive and doing fine. Mikasa tells Eren that countless innocent people have died and she asks him if it was the right thing to do. However, Eren realizes that the War Hammer Titan is alive and that the main body is outside the titan body. Eren figures out the location of the main body of the War Hammer Titan and it turns out that she is enclosed in a crystal. Eren uses the jaw titan to crush her crystal and then he proceeds to eat her.

The Marleyan soldiers that were on ships started to return to the mainland, however, Armin transforms into the colossal titan and blows them apart. Levi attacks Zeke’s nape and puts him out of commission. Pieck is also severely injured and when all of the titans of Marley are defeated, Reiner transforms and engages in combat with Eren.

9. Two Brothers (Season 4, Episode 19)

In this episode, Colt begs Zeke to not use the scream because Falco has consumed his spinal fluid. However, Zeke still used the scream which transformed Falco and the other people of Paradis into a titan, and the newly transformed titans started rampaging, Falco’s titan then eats Porco and then Falco turns into a human. As Eren starts running towards Zeke to activate the Path, Gabi shoots him in the neck and Eren’s head flies in the air, however, Eren’s head lands on Zeke’s hand.

Eren and Zeke’s consciousness is transferred to the Path where Zeke is chained and Eren is free. Zeke asks Eren to fulfill their wish and euthanize all the Eldians to free them from their suffering. Eren tells Zeke that he would never agree to such a plan. Eren calls the founder Ymir, however, she ignores him and moves towards Zeke. Zeke is then freed from the chains and then he chains Eren. Zeke tells Eren that it isn’t his fault and that the fault lies with his father.

8. Declaration of War (Season 4, Episode 5)

Eren is in a basement of a building which is close to the stage where Willy Tybur is speaking. Eren asks Falco to call Reiner to the basement and then he asks him to sit down. Eren also shows his injured palm. Reiner then sits down. On the stage where Willy Tybur is speaking, he explains to the diplomats from the world that the real enemy aren’t the people of Paradis and he explains the entire history between Marley and Paradis.

He later explains that the real threat to humanity is Eren Jaegar (basically it was a publicity stunt). Reiner begs Eren to forgive him, he also offers to kill himself if that would make Eren stop the destruction that he was going to cause. Eren then tells Reiner to get up. He also tells him that this isn’t his fault, he was just born in this world. Eren then transforms into a titan and at the same time Willy Tybur declares war on the people of Paradis

7. Midnight Sun (Season 3, Episode 18)

As Eren stares at Armin’s dead body, Zeke approaches Eren and tells him that he will save him someday. After Zeke leaves, Armin starts coughing which proves that he is alive. Eren begs Levi to give him the serum and Levi agrees, however, Floch shows up with Erwin’s body and asks Levi to use the serum on him. Levi wants to use the serum on Erwin because he believes that it would be better for humanity, however, Eren argues with him and wants him to use it on Armin.

As Levi throws Eren, Mikasa proceeds to knock Levi to the ground. Eren argues that Armin will be the one that will save humanity. Hange holds back Mikasa and tries to reason with her. Connie and Jean also arrive at the scene and watch the argument unfold. Eren then tells Levi about Armin’s dream about seeing the ocean. Levi then asks all of them to leave and that he will inject Erwin. However, Levi injects Armin because he decides that this is the place where Erwin dies. Armin eats Bertholdt and turns back into a human.

6. That Day (Season 3, Episode 20)

Grisha and his sister set out of the internment zone without a permit as they are chasing an airship. As they are doing that, two officers see them and ask them if they have a permit to leave the internment zone. One of the soldiers pulls Grisha to another place and starts beating him. After he is done with Grisha, he tells him that he can look at the airship. The next day Grisha finds out that his sister’s dead body was being eaten by hounds.

The officer then complains to Grisha’s parents about not education their child about the crimes committed by his family’s ancestors. Grisha’s parents then explain the entire history that was fabricated by the Marleyan officials. Grisha later grows up to become a doctor, later one of his patients tells him that his sister was fed to the hounds by a Marleyan officer. The patient introduces himself as Grice and he tells Grisha about an informant in the Marleyan military that gives information to the Eldian Restorationists, an Anti-Marley group. Later, Grisha gets married to Dina Fritz, a woman who belonged to the royal family.

They have a child whose name is Zeke Jaeger. The Owl tells them the Marleyan army wants to infiltrate Paradis and reclaim the Founding Titan. Grisha plans on sending Zeke as a Marleyan soldier to become a warrior candidate. Zeke betrays his father and turns him in. Grisha is tortured for days and later he was brought to a wall, where Grice and Dina is injected with the titan serum

Grisha tries to tell them that Dina is from the royal family, however, one of the soldiers silents him by covering his mouth. Later, that soldier kills the Marleyan soldier that was injecting the Eldians. That soldier reveals himself as The Owl and his real name was Eren Kruger.

5. Senshi “Warrior” (Season 2, Episode 6)

As the members of the scouts are regrouping at Wall Rose, Reiner and Bertholdt come to the conclusion to tell Eren about their titan powers. Reiner tells Eren that he has the powers of the Armor Titan and Bertholdt has the powers of the Colossal Titan. They tell him that they will not wipe out humanity inside the walls if Eren agrees to come with them. Then we see a flashback in which members of the scout receive a report which states that Bertholdt and Reiner were from the same place as Annie. They come to the conclusion that Reiner and Bertholdt are titans as well.

Reiner then tells Eren and Bertholdt that he is a warrior and then Mikasa stabs him in the neck and attacks Bertholdt as well. Both of them then stand up and then transform into the Armored Titan and Colossal Titan respectively. Reiner’s titan form grabs Eren and jumps off the wall. Eren is enraged by their actions, transforms into a titan and punches Reiner.

After Zeke wipes out the entire Scouts regiment that was charging at him, he sees that his own titans have been defeated. Later, he sees Levi charging at him. He tries attacking Levi but Levi makes multiple cuts on his arm. He later butchers Zeke’s titan form. As he goes for the kill, the cart titan appears and saves Zeke

Armin comes up with a plan and asks the members of the scouts to buy time as he and Eren will figure something out and defeat the colossal titan. Armin then gets close to Berthold’s titan and attaches anchors from the maneuvering gear to the colossal titan’s teeth. Bertholdt then blows off steam from his body while Armin gets scorched to death. Armin then entrusts his dream to Eren. After Armin is burned Eren in his human form attacks the Colossal Titan’s nape and captures Bertholdt.

3. Perfect Game (Season 3, Episode 16)

As the colossal titan is destroying the city inside the walls, the beast titan is attacking Erwin and his squad from the outside by throwing pieces of rocks. Zeke then says that he is aiming for a perfect game. As the soldiers fall in despair, they think about quitting because they are unable to defeat the Beast Titan. However, Erwin, the commander of the scouts, gives an inspirational speech that gives his subordinates the courage to accept death for the betterment of mankind

After Eren and Zeke are brought back to the path, Zeke asks Eren if he has planned to manipulate their father all along. To which Eren replies that this wouldn’t have been possible if Zeke did not show him his father’s memories. Eren goes on to explain that all of this was planned four years ago when he saw his father’s memories and the future. However, Zeke realizes that there were quite a few inconsistencies in Eren’s plan due to which Zeke comes to the conclusion that Eren can’t see everything in the future. After listening to Zeke, Eren is enraged and charges towards him.

The episode then moves on to Ymir Fritz’s flashback. Ymir used to be a slave owned by a tribal king. One day, a pig escapes and the king asks the audience for the culprit. All of the slaves point at Ymir, hence she is declared as the culprit. The king then decides to let the hounds eat Ymir. However, as Ymir is being chased by hounds, she comes across a tree with a giant hole. She enters the hole and falls into water

A spine-like creature then attaches itself to Ymir and she transforms into a titan. As years go by Ymir gets constantly used by the king and she later bears the king’s three children- Maria, Rose, and Sina (or Sheena). One day, a traitor attacks the king with a spear. However, Ymir steps in between and gets hit.

The king didn’t want to lose Ymir’s titan powers so he compelled his daughters to eat Ymir. The three daughters then inherit the powers of the titan and this tradition goes on for ages. In the present day, Eren then tells Ymir that she is free and not a slave

1. Memories of the Future (Episode 79)

Zeke goes through Eren’s memories because he believes that Grisha brainwashed him. However, after going through his memories he comes to the conclusion that Grisha hadn’t brainwashed Eren, rather it was Eren that brainwashed Grisha. 

On the day that the walls of Shiganshina fell, Grisha asked the King of the Walls to unleash the titans to stop the infiltration of the Armored and Colossal Titan. However, the King of the Walls refuses. Grisha decides to use his titan form and kill the royal family, however, after seeing the kids panic, he is left helpless and falls on his knees.

Eren then talks to Grisha and tells him that this is a story that he started and it shall continue even if he dies and after his death. He also tells Grisha that he has to do it for Dina and Kruger and that he has to keep moving forward. Grisha then proceeds to kill the children and he eats the user of the Founding Titan. After Grisha is done massacring the royal family, he apologizes to Zeke and begs Zeke to stop Eren. He warns Zeke that Eren will destroy the world. Then, Eren and Zeke return to the path.

This episode has the best plot twist in all of Attack on Titan, if not all of the anime.
