What do you think of first, when you hear the title, Black Clover? I personally think of one of the most popular shounen anime of our modern times. Today, we’ll take a look at the anime series in particular and try to make up an order in which you should watch it in case you get into the mood.

Black Clover Anime Series Watch Order
Season 1 (2017-18)
Episodes: 1-51
Table of Contents
Consisting of a total of 51 episodes, the first season adapts the first nine volumes of the manga it was based on. The only difference is episode 13 follows a different storyline than the manga does.
Our main character, Asta, receives a Grimoire which prompts him to join the Black Bulls in an attempt to fulfill his dream and become the new Wizard King. While exploring a dungeon, Asta meets Mars, a Magic Knight of the Diamond Kingdom.
Asta is soon captured during an attack from rogue mages against the capital city when a zombie invasion breaks out because of them. The mages are working for the Midnight Sun. He’s later rescued and soon joins forces with his future Black Bulls captain to fight against kidnappers out for the children.
The final part of the season is then spent with the Black Bulls’ journey to the Underwater Temple, in search of a magic stone for which they need to complete a series of different challenges.
Season 2 (2018–19)
Episodes: 52-102
It has a total of 51 episodes. The season adapts the manga volume 9 to 17, or in other words, chapters 76 to 159. Exceptions include episode 55-56, based on the Light Novel, ’Book of the Black Bulls’, 66, which is a recap, 82, which is a filler for the chibi series, and 85-86 which are just fillers.
The story’s main focus is the Black Bulls entering the Forest of Witches, and trying to heal Asta’s arms, which were injured in the fight against the Midnight sun.
It also features an exam to become a Magic Knight, and a chance for Asta to go up against Yuno and settle their rivalry, but he fails to get a chance against him. During this time, some long coming scores are settled between characters who have been at odds with each other, mainly out of jealousy. Despite dropping out earlier, Asta, Noelle, and Luck become Royal Knights.
The season ends with Asta unlocking his Demon form which can nullify magic.
Season 3 (2019–20)
Episodes: 103-154
The longest season of the series with its 52 episodes, it covers the manga from volume 17 all the way to 23. Episodes 123 and 124 are recap episodes, and 130 to 154 are all anime canon episodes under the manga author’s supervision. This was the season that was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.
The story picks back up from where the previous season left off, with Asta finally stopping the elven corruption and his magic cancelling power helps him also free his friends from the effects of poisoning.
The Elves are still striving to destroy all of humanity The story thus enters the Shadow Castle, which is none other than the underworld. Here, the Magic Knights are forced to face off against a new villain, who’s been pulling the strings behind all the events thus far.
After defeating this enemy though, they have to realise they’re not out of the deep yet, as there are numerous others as well. Meanwhile, there’s a war brewing between the Clover and Spade Kingdoms, and the knights need help and answers. Soon.
The Magic Knights thus prepare an assault against Magicula and other demons residing in the Spade Kingdom, however, difficulties arise. The shortage of time, and specific elements (earth, fire and water) are important in defeating the demons.
The town of Tiulyu falls and Dazu, the Demon believer, holds a grudge against the Magic Knights for their failure. A war is brewing and the Wizard King realises that there’s only one way to survive the upcoming war, and that is by unity.
Season 4 (2020–21)
Episodes: 155-170
This is the final season of the anime, consisting of a total of 16 episodes. It started with anime original episodes before starting to adapt the manga again from volume 24 starting episode 158. The war is slowly but surely approaching and everyone is preparing with whatever they have.
As the war breaks out, all-out battles ensue and in the end, it all comes down to Asta fighting the demon residing in his sword, Liebe. He must fight and defeat him, otherwise he’ll be killed and turned into a monster.
In the end, using what he learned in his past fights and adventures alongside other swordsmen, and finally defeats Liebe, whose name actually means love in German oddly enough.
With him victorious, Asta and Liebe form a pact and his training continues on. He now has a new ally, a new friend by his side.
Black Clover OVA Watch Order
Black Clover: Jump Festa 2016 Special
An OVA episode bundled with Volume 11 of the manga. It features the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony at its core. It starts with Asta and Yuno being compared since their childhood due to their difference in talents. We then cut to the Grimoire acceptance ceremony at the Grimoire Tower. Yuno receives a special grimoire, and Asta declares a rivalry against him, but Yuno just shrugs him off.
Yuno is later attacked by Revchi Salik, a former Magic Knight, and Asta helps his friend. This is when Asta is revealed to not have any magic talents and is disheartened by the rude words of the former knight, only to have Yuno stand up for him. When Asta regains his spirit, he finally receives his grimoire, prompting him to defeat Revchi.
Thus, Yuno and Asta’s rivalry to become the Wizard King is announced.
SPECIALS
Black Clover: Jump Festa 2018 Special
The special episode is also known as the All Magic Knights Thanksgiving Special. It features the different squad captains, and Yuno and Asta partaking in a quiz game.
ONA
Squishy! Black Clover
A chibi mini series serving as a spinoff to the main series featuring all the important characters in chibi form. Also often referred to as Petit Clover, it features small, standalone stories each episode. It also has a separate ONA special episode.

1. The Anime Series
Since every last one of the other media related to the title is completely dependent on your knowledge of the anime series, it’s best to watch it head first, familiarize with the characters, the world and the different factions at odds with each other.
2. The Squishy Chibi Series
Once you have enough knowledge over the lore and the characters, the fun little mini series will be a breeze to watch, and you’ll get to better enjoy the story of each episode.
3. The Specials, OVA/ONA
These are just small additions to the already existing legend, and of course the 2016 special gives us some extra insight into what went down between Asta and Yuno since their childhood.
4. The Movie
Once the movie hits the theatres, and you’re fan enough, you’ll definitely want to check it out. It will most definitely just add more to this anime epic, and you won’t regret giving it all a chance.
