Isagi Yoichi

Isagi Yoichi | Blue Lock Wiki

Isagi is one of those highly ambitious characters who aren’t afraid of dreaming big. However, what makes him interesting is that this doesn’t make him an irrational person. On the contrary, he’s actually one of the most rational characters of the show. His sole purpose in life is to become the best striker the world has ever seen. As the main character, it should go without saying that he made his debut in the first chapter of the manga.

Personality

Isagi Personality 1

Despite being ambitious, Isagi starts off in the show with a personality that’s very friendly and carefree. He doesn’t hate his competitors, nor does he think he needs to hold any grudges towards them. The only thing he cares about is improving as a player, and eventually reaching the top of the world.

Like any other good character out there in the anime world, Isagi has a few traits that everyone can relate to. His first most relatable trait is “self-doubt”. You see, he doesn’t start off as the best footballer in the world. In fact, he was one of the worst players at the start of the story. Naturally, he wasn’t too sure about dedicating his life to being a soccer player.

Isagi Personality 2

As the manga progresses, he points out his weaknesses not only in his football game but his personality as well. He realizes that in order to succeed, he’ll have to develop an assertive and dominant personality, along with improving his football skills.

Being the protagonist of the show, he acquires these traits and soon becomes a vital player in his team. This personality is similar to what Kuon displays as he thinks his teammates will just drag him down (Chapter 24).

In the series, there were many teams and Isagi was on team Z. It didn’t take him long to become the most important  player for his team (chapter 15). And after finally practicing his Football skills day and night he was selected to become one of “The Blue Lock 11” members out of 300 players (Chapter 108).

Isagi Personality 3

This isn’t to say that all his development as a character was perfect, morally speaking.  Eventually, he becomes fine with destroying the dreams of his opponents. As his character develops, he begins to think that it’s all about “the survival of the fittest” and it’s ok to trample over some people to achieve your goals.

His development as a character combined with his ambitious nature makes him deserving of his name “Isagi Yoichi”. The word Yoichi means “one world” and the word Isagi means “righteous”.

Therefore, the meaning of his name can be interpreted as “the world’s purest”. Even though some of his actions are morally questionable, there is no doubt in my mind that he’s actually one of the kindest and calmest people in the manga.

Strength And Skills

Isagi Analyzation

Analyzation

When it comes to soccer, it’s no surprise that fancy dribbling and powerful shots take the spotlight of the show. However, veteran players and critics are aware that there is much more to football than just that.

One of the things that determine the value of a player is his ability to quickly read and analyze the situation, and forge an ideal response that would benefit his team.

With his mesmerizing footwork, stunning passes, and perfect coordination with his teammates, he can create opportunities for his teammates to score some mesmerizing goals.

Isagi Striking

Striking Power and Accuracy

It’s needless to say that analysis is his strongest suit in the game. However, his brilliance doesn’t end there. You see, another thing that makes him such a great player is the power in his shot.

Although it’s common in all high-level players, some players tend to have a kick more powerful than others. And it’s safe to say that Isagi has a kick that’s on the more powerful side of the spectrum.

His ability to analyze the position of defenders, looking for the perfect window to shoot from a distance made him a very deadly foe. The power and accuracy in his kick gives him the edge he needs over the keeper, even from a very far distance.

Isagi Game Sense

Game Sense

We’ve already mentioned how one of the things that stands out about this guy is his ability to analyze the situation of the football match. This is also the reason that makes him more and more of a deadlier player as the match goes on further.

The more time he spends playing with his opponents, the more he gets to analyze,  giving his teammates a greater chance of victory by each passing second of the game.

Off the ball movement Isagi

Off-The-Ball Movements

Another thing that Isagi excels at is off-the-ball movement. Veteran footballers know that you have to move to certain positions when the ball is in the hands of your teammates. He uses his time without the ball to get to the blind spot of the opposing teammates.

It can help him to get a pass that can potentially penetrate through the defenses of the opposing team. It’s one of the reasons Isagi is a player that the opposing team can’t let their eyes off for even a second.

A fraction of a second and a small opening is all he needs to turn the table against the opponents.

Isagi Instinct

Instincts

Aside from having these “big brain” plays, there are times when Isagi simply gives in to his desire to goal. As that is all that’s needed to win the game at times. There are multiple occasions where he just went all in and shot the ball with full power towards the goal without thinking too much. More often than not, it’s usually a good decision as well.

Facts

ØJust like any other great footballer, Isagi got into the game at quite a young age. He started playing football only when he was 4 years old.

Ø  His favorite season is autumn, it’s the philosophically deepest season out of the four we have, as it symbolizes the value of life and its preservation.

Ø  His favorite food is Kintsuba.

Ø  His hometown is Saitama ( And no, it has nothing to do with one punch man).

Ø  This shouldn’t come off as a surprise, but his weakest subjects in school are math and science. As someone who has dedicated his life to football, it’s understandable why he doesn’t have time for his school books.

Ø  Aside from being addicted to football, Isagi also has a keen interest in Manga. According to him, the best way to spend life is by playing football and reading lots of manga.

Ø  His favorite color is blue, the color that symbolizes calmness.

Ø  If he were to know that it’s his last day on Earth, instead of playing football, he’d have a nice cup of tea with some Kintsuba. A fine way to spend your last day if you ask me!

Ø  He used to be fairly enthusiastic about video games as a kid as well. The last thing he asked Santa for Christmas was a PlayStation 4.

Ø  His strongest and most favorite part of his body is the thigh muscle. As it’s the muscle group that helps the most in developing the power to shoot a football.

Quotes

Just like any other sports anime out there, this one also has some of the most motivational quotes that a man can ask for.

> Football is a sport played with 11 people. So, one person can’t win on their own. Football isn’t just for one… One for all... I wanted to win!

> I didn’t come to trample on others… To become the best in the world!! I came here… So I need to defeat those who are stronger than me! Or else, Nothing will change!!

> Inside of me? I wanna know more! What my monster really is. That could be my one clue to surviving inside Blue lock.

Plot

Isagi Plot 1

The story of this manga starts with a tragedy for Japan. And that disaster was the elimination of the Japanese football team from the 2018 FIFA world cup. The Japanese Football Union felt that it was the right time to make a change in the system, so they wouldn’t have to go through this shame ever again.

Isagi Yoichi was one of the lucky players who were invited to this program after his team was defeated and couldn’t qualify for the nationals. Even though Isagi performed quite well, they couldn’t make it because his team couldn’t keep up with the opponents. The Japanese Football Union thought that Isagi deserved a chance and gave him the invitation.

Isagi Plot 2

Isagi’s new coach would be Ego Jinpachi. According to him, the best way to destroy “the losers of football” in the country is by isolating 300 best strikers in a prison-like institution known as “Blue Lock”

It would only be a matter of survival of the fittest in an institute like this and our main character has everything to lose, because Football means the world to him and he’s not about to give it up.

The coach made it very clear that they were looking for a striker with an “ego” (Chapter 2).

Final Verdict

Isagi Yoichi is the main protagonist of the Blue Lock Series. Because of the grueling training and the unforgiving environment he was put in, he changed to become the world’s best striker. But did he change for better or worse? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
