Ymir Fritz | Attack On Titan (WIKI)
Introduction
The second part of the last season of Attack on Titans just began! We’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time now and we are all hyped to discover how this magnificent masterpiece will end. Nothing better than a good old Wiki to commemorate the event in style.
Ymir Fritz is one of the most mysterious characters in the series. Although her story is more than just interesting, it got highlighted very briefly. Her existence was what set in motion the integrality of the plot and yet we know very little about her. So let me jog your memory.
Table of Contents
Ymir was the first human to acquire the power of a Titan also known as the Founding Titan (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 17 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 88 p. 27). At the time, she was a lowly slave at the beck and call of the cruel Eldian King, who abused her and her power to protect the prosperity of his people.

While Eldia was flourishing, Marley as well as the entire world was being crushed by their tyrannical and unfair rule.
She stayed under the King’s control for 13 long years and finally met her end protecting him. The King fed her corps to Sheena, Maria, and Rose, her daughters so they could inherit her strength.
However, her power shattered and divided into nine Titans, the Titans that we now know of (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 17, Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 88 p. 21 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 28)

Appearance

HUMAN FORM
Ymir had the stature of a child, even as she grew older, she practically stayed the same. Extremely slim, she had long straight hair with bangs that almost covered her eyes, eyes that were always shrouded in darkness.
When she was a slave she used to wear dirty rags with a headband on her head and leather sandals. When she acquired the favors of the King, her cloth was upgraded and she received a sleeveless dress.
Like all other captured slaves, her tongue was cut out, however, speculation goes that it might have regenerated after she became the Founding Titan.

TITAN FORM
Ymir’s Titan was gigantic, the Colossal Titan doesn’t even compare. It had the shape of a woman but her ribs were gushing out of her. Her face had no skin, eyes, or mouth. It was a simple skull with long fair hair.
Personality

Ymir’s personality was described by the person she knew. For example, Frieda Reiss said that she was a kind soul who always put others before her (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 54 p. 4 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 1-3).
Her people, the Eldians truly respected her and saw her in high esteem for all her accomplishments and for what she had done for her kind.
Of course, on the other hand, the Marleyans only saw a devil in her, a devil with whom they were forced to make a pact with. And because of that one thought, she was utterly despised by them.
However, the truth is that Ymir never had a will. She was born and raised a slave, taught to never want or dream (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 29).

She devoted her life to the Eldian King, never questioning his command, never even thought of once disobeying him. She was the one who built his empire with her own two hands. She was the one who slew all his enemies. She bore his children (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 16-19) and she even willingly gave up her life for his (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 21-22).
Even after death, she stayed loyal to the royal family. Her soul was moved to the Coordinate and there she molded Titans, Titans that would become the weapons of her master. And whenever the Founding Titan was needed, she was there to answer the call (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 18).
Eren, who inherited her memories, stated that even with the knowledge he acquired, he couldn’t understand Ymir. The only thing he knew for sure is that she truly loved Fritz, even though he mistreated her, destroyed her hometown in a massacre that even took her parents’ lives.
All Ymir wanted was to be free of those feelings, she desperately waited for someone to come and save her from her eternal misery (Attack on Titan manga: Chapter 139).
Strength And Skills

POWER OF THE TITANS
Ymir was the only person who possessed the full power of the Titans. The ones that came after her only had fragments of her immense strength (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 16).
No one ever came close to matching her. Also, Ymir died 13 years after becoming a Titan and because of that, any person who inherits her power will suffer the same fate. This phenomenon was later called the “Curse of Ymir” (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 88 p. 21).
After her death, she lingered in the Coordinate (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 25-28) and modified the Titan’s body over the years.
Whenever the Founder’s power was needed, she would sculpt Titans out of ethereal sand (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 18).

Zeke also added that she had the ability to create literally anything (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 27).
The Founding Titan’s power is not its own, it’s Ymir’s. Any deed that needs to be done by the founder will be executed by Ymir, the trigger is the Founder’s scream or if the owner is transported to Ymir’s world in person (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 28).
Because she was the Royal Family’s slave she will only heed the commands of their descendants (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 29). So in the hands of others, the Founder is deemed useless.
Eren was the only exception to this rule as he used her power twice. The first time, he controlled the Titans and made them attack Dina Fritz (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 32 – 45). The second is when he managed to convince her to ignore Zeke and help him instead (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 32 – 45).
Facts
- Ymir killed an uncountable number of Marleyan soldiers (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 17 – 18).
- Indirectly, she also killed triple the number of people that are currently alive on Earth (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 99 p. 21).
Past/History

Ymir’s story takes place 2000 years ago. She was living in a small village that was raided by the Eldians. Most of the villagers were killed, including her parents. Those who survived were enslaved and had their tongues cut off (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 139 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122).
Ymir was one of the lucky or rather the unlucky ones who escaped with her life. During her slave years, she made the mistake of accidentally releasing pigs from an Eldian farm (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 135 p. 1). The King himself came to find the culprit and she was ousted in a second.
However, the King didn’t kill her, well, not on the spot at least. He released her to be hunted for sports (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 7 – 8). She tried her best to survive but was gravely wounded.
Exhausted, she found an extremely old tree with a pass in its trunk. Seeking refuge, she entered only to fall in a sinkhole that dropped her into sort of a pool filled with a mysterious liquid. In front of her, she saw a creature, something she had never seen before.

The creature that turned out to be the “source of all living matter” was slime-like with tentacles all over her body. The strange life form fused with the girl turning her into the First Titan (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 12 – 14).
She acquired unparalleled power. And what did she do with it? Present it to the King. Foolish girl…
She nurtured the land in his name, civilized it and the Eldian kingdom became the wealthiest in the world. She trampled on Marley in his name, massacred all the King’s enemies, and what was her reward? The honor to become one of the King’s concubines.
She had three daughters with Fritz and she called them Sheena, Maria, and Rose (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 17 – 18). Also pure speculation, but it is said that it was during that period that Ymir developed true feelings for the ungrateful King (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 139 p. 6).

13 years into the future, an assassination attempt was made on the King which Ymir stopped by sacrificing her own life. Although she died, she opened her eyes once more. She found herself in an unknown land, a path.
In the land of the living, at the same time, Fritz forced his children to cannibalize their mother so the power of the Titan would not be lost. He forced them to keep on reproducing and made their offspring do the same.
He wanted to keep the power of the founder in the hands of the Eldians so they can rule over the world forever. The First Titan’s power, therefore, shattered into nine pieces creating the Titans of the present (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 18 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122 p. 28 – 29).

Mythology

The tale of Ymir was passed down by the Eldians as follows:
They claimed that what happened to the young girl was undoubtedly a gift from God (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 88 p. 26). All the subjects of Ymir are chosen ones and because they are following God’s will, no deed can be called evil (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 28).
Over the years, Marley accused them of many atrocities, which were all true. To defend themselves, they claimed that all of those accusations are pure lies as Ymir would have never permitted them (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 11).
There was even a cult that believed Ymir was a Goddess and worshipped her as such (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 89 p. 8-9).
For the Marleyans, she was the devil’s follower, corrupted by the “Devil of All Earth” (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 17). They used this excuse to shun the Eldians.

Another version of the story was revealed by Eren Kruger to Grisha Yeager saying that Ymir intentionally made contact with the “source of all living matter” to obtain its power (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 88 p. 27).
Now in the present day, we can see Frieda Reiss visiting Historia Reiss, her half-sister, telling her the story of Ymir and her pact with the Devil. However, in the book, the name of the girl was “Krista” (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 51 p. 20).
Although Frieda labeled Krista a devil, she urged Historia to be just like her. Lady-like, kind, brave, altruistic, and loving.
However, Frieda, who had the FoundingTitan’s power at the time, used one of her abilities to erase her memories, so as she grew older, Historia had no recollection of Frieda at all. Images of that time would sometimes flash in her mind but she would never give another thought to the matter (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 54 p. 4-6 and Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 51 p. Additional Scene).
Legacy

RETURN TO SHIGANSHINA ARC
Eren and his comrades finally managed to reach his old house. They found the forbidden basement left behind by Grisha Yeager and got their hands on three journals (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 85 p. 37).
First, they read about Ymir’s story, a story told to Grisha by his father (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 17-23). Then they learned that Grisha sided with the resistance. He was planning on infiltrating Paradis Island in order to retrieve the Founding Titan (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 86 p. 27-35).

WAR OF PARADIS ARC
Zeke Yeager was defeated by Levi. His body was completely shattered, he was on the verge of death or more correctly he should’ve been dead. However, when he opened his eyes, his ruined body was being reconstructed with sand by Ymir (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 115 p. 39-40).
On the march again, he managed to make contact with Eren and activated the Founder’s power before arising in the Paths. Eren was the first to sense Ymir’s presence and Zeke introduced her as the true Founder.
Zeke then presses Eren to go forth with the Euthanasia Plan. To his surprise, Eren refused and he understood that he was tricking him. Instead, he asked Ymir to lend him her power. Ymir who has no will and only listens to the royal family ignored him, however, Zeke was a different story as he is one of their descendants.
After Eren’s betrayal, he asked Ymir to restrain him and she chains him to the ground (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 120 p. 17-30). Zeke then shared Grisha’s memories with Eren, telling him that it was because of him that his father rebelled against the Reiss family.

Zeke turns to Ymir and commands her to sterilize her subjects, she moves to the Coordinate with the intention of reorganizing the Paths to do so (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 121 p. 38 – 45).
With all his might, Eren breaks the chains, runs to Ymir, hugs her from behind, and begs her to transfer her power to him so he can “end this world“. He gave her the freedom of choice. After all, she was no longer a slave nor was she a God, she was a human just like him and just like all humans, she was free.
Two options presented themselves before her: forever wondering that deserted land alone or helping Eren. She was lost in thoughts when he asked her if she was the one who called him. After realizing that she has been waiting for more than 2000 years for him to arrive, she burst into tears.
Eren’s decapitated head reconnects to his body as the wall collapses and a horde of Titans comes gushing in (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 122).

Eren rises and uses the Rumbling to control the Titans. At the same time, a boy got a glimpse of Ymir before being crushed to death by one of them (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 131 p. 25).
That was the proof that Eren and Ymir are now partners (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 133).
Armin Arlert also managed to see her as he was heading to Eren’s side (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 135 p. 27).
Mikasa Ackerman then kills Eren and Ymir witnesses her bidding him her final farewell by kissing his decapitated head (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 138 p. 45).

Mikasa, by killing with her own hands the one that she loved, released Ymir from the feelings she had for the cruel King. After freeing herself from those suffocating restraints, she retrieved the Titans and their powers from our world (Attack on Titan Manga: Chapter 139).
Mikasa thanked Ymir for the life she had given them and as Ymir looked at the young girl, she dreamed of the past, a past where the assassination attempt was a success and she was still at the side of her daughters, consoling them (Attack on Titan Manga: Volume 34 p. 224-226).
