How To Watch And Read Berserk
Difference Between Berserk 1997 and The Berserk Movies

It’s one of the questions which makes people confused. Let me clear it up. Berserk 1997 was the first animation of Berserk, which was in OG Old School Style animation. This was later adapted in 3 different movies with the new art style in 2012 and 2013.
After movies came with a new style, in 2016, the first season of Berserk got launched with CGI-style animation. This series continued from where the original 1997 series ended.
You can watch OG Berserk or new-style Berserk movies. Both are the same, it depends on your taste. BUT watch one of them first before coming to the seasons. You can watch that after as well if you like to.
Berserk Anime Series Watch Order
Let’s start with the watch order. I mean, why not we love anime, right? Many of us prefer it more than manga, so let’s begin with watch order. In watch order, we’ll be talking about Berserk Seasons, Movies, and Ova.
I’ll be going to give you a little overview of everything. Additionally, you can watch two seasons of Berserk on Netflix in both sub and dub.
Berserk (Season 1, 12 Episodes) 2016
Let’s get one thing straight, this anime is not any average anime. It might give you nightmares, so watch it over your own risk. It’s not a warning; I’m just telling you that it contains inappropriate scenes which are not suitable for everyone.
Anyway, season 1 of Berserk is about a swordsman known as Guts, the “Black Swordsman.” He carries a sword that is even bigger than him and fights evil spirits and monsters. Guts himself is cursed. He has a seal known as “The Brand” on his neck, which attracts spirits. His backstory is harsh and horrifying.
In season one, basically, some people consider them as the followers of God. Whatever they do is already decided by God. They kill people and torture them. Still, they say this is all God’s will; they even claim this is the only way to “cleanse people from evil.”
Apart from this, we can see Guts in full action, and we can also see him saving a girl named Casca. She also has “The Brand” in her body, which makes her cursed as well. Oh, man, I just can’t explain how fantastic season 1 is. You’ll get goosebumps for sure.
BUT if you are a soft person or your heart is not strong, just skip some parts. It’s advice, not a warning.
Berserk (Season 2, 12 Episodes) 2017
Season two starts with the reunion of Guts and Griffith, which was not peaceful. Guts tried to fight Griffith but ended up fighting Zodd, who is the companion of Griffith. Later, Griffith and Zodd left. Griffith said he was going to gain his Kingdom back.
Now, Guts decides to find Griffith; he takes Casca along with him. They are later joined by The Generals of Holy Knights, Farness and Serpico. Isidro joins them as well, and now they all are moving together in this Adventure.
Basically, Season two covers all the things which were left in season one. In season two, we can see the new powers of each character. Even Guts gets new power objects like a Berserker Armor. Again, I’m mentioning Season two has a lot of action, just like season one and the rest of the movies.
Berserk Movies Watch Order
Berserk: Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King (2012)
So, if you watched the anime, then you might have wondered who Griffith is, right? This movie is going to tell how Guts and Griffith met and became allies. Well, no wonder Gut’s can draw anyone’s attention towards him. Guts defeated Bazuso, also known as “Grey Knight,” then the Band of Hawk and Griffith acknowledged him.
Gut’s lost to Griffith and joined him. After that, everything started, and believe me by the end, I mean you’ll be going in shock after watching all the movies. These three movies are all about Guts and Griffith. It’s about their Friendship, Rivalry, Betrayal and of course about their Adventure.
Berserk: Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey (2012)

This movie is full of bloodshed as it says, “The Battle for Doldrey.” At first, Guts was an ally of Griffith. However, he wanted to be equal to him to do that. Guts left Band of Hawk. At that same time, a war was about to begin. Where the Band of Hawk has to face an army of 30,000 soldiers.
A lot happened. The Band of Hawk won, and Gut’s fought Griffith as well and won, then he left. Griffith did not take this defeat very well because his ally Guts left him. Griffith made a colossal mistake, and now he is imprisoned in the Tower of Rebirth; meanwhile, The Band of Hawk are considered criminals.
Berserk: Ougon Jidaihen III: Kourin (2013)
This was the last movie, and it was the story after the legendary duel between Guts and Griffith. Guts left the Band of Hawk. However, Guts returns to free Griffith from the Tower of Rebirth, where he’s been tortured mentally and physically.
In this movie, you’ll be able to get many answers to the questions. How Guts and Casca got The Brand and became cursed. What actually Griffith is and how he became God’s Hand.
Basically, these movies are like Wikipedia. All the information is here.
Berserk OVA Watch Order
Berserk: Recollection of the Witch (2017)
Well, it’s nothing much, so let’s just keep it small. Basically, this isn’t even an OVA. This was the recap of two seasons of Berserk. So, if it’s been long and you watched Berserk a long time ago, this might unlock your memory. It’s not bad, but it’s just a recap.

Berserk Read Order
Now we are here with a Berserk Reading Order. Anime is fun, but the manga is love. Its originality and, just to be explicit, the Berserk Manga is a lot more different than the series. There are over 300 chapters in Berserk, but sadly Author Kentaro Miura passed away on 6 May 2021 without giving us the ending.
It’s sad, but he gave us a fantastic 300+ chapters so let’s acknowledge his outstanding work and look at the reading order.
1) Black Swordsman Arc
Volumes: (0A-0H, volume 1-3)
Don’t be confused about what 0A-0H are. These parts contain a events about Guts backstory. Basically, Black Swordsman is all about Guts and his journey. This was also when he met Puck. You don’t want to skip it; believe me, this is the beginning.
2) Golden Age Arc
Volumes: (01-94, Volume 3-14)
Yes, it’s the same thing; nothing has changed. The Golden Age Arc is all about Griffith and Guts. This is about how they met, became allies, fought each other and even fought together with the enemies. BUT by the end, it was all messed. By the End of the Golden Age Arc, you’ll see how Guts’ suffering started and why he wants revenge from Griffith.
3) Conviction Arc (95-176)

Conviction Arc starts just after Black Swordsman Arc. Don’t get confused, the Golden Age Arc is different. That was about the past, and the Conviction Arc is about the Present.
Lost Children Chapter
Volumes: 14-16
Let’s see Guts in action. The Lost Children Arc is about Guts and his fight with an Elf-like creature and their leader, Rosine. Guts tried to save a village from the attack of these elf-like creatures, but villagers blamed him for everything.
Guts prepares a plan to kill the leader, Rosine. However, it did not go as planned. It even creates a massive problem for Guts.
Binding Chain Chapter
Volumes: 16-17
This chapter will tell you why things got worse for Guts. Guts is wounded and surrounded by Holy Iron Chain Knights. He can fight the ordinary Knights but loses to the vice commander and gets captured by them.
This chapter is exciting and fun, and by the end of the chapter, Guts finds out Casca is missing, and now he is trying to find her.
Birth Ceremony Chapter
Volumes: 17-21
In this Chapter, Guts is finally able to find Casca, but it was not that easy. He fought many people, including monsters. He fought Father Mogzus, who was about to kill Casca; he also claimed that Casca was a witch.
This chapter contains a lot of inappropriate stuff, so be careful, and Griffith can be seen again by the end of this chapter.
4) Millennium Falcon Arc
Volume: 22-35
Oh man, this is the most significant Arc in the Berserk Manga. It is full of action and thrill. It aired for like 10 years, from 2001 to 2010. This Arc starts just after the Conviction arc.
5) Fantasia Arc (Chapter 308 to present)
Unfortunately, we never got the ending of the Fantasia Arc and the series. This was the last Arc started in 2010. The Fantasia Arc is about the aftermath of the Great Roar of the Astral World.
Let me tell you one thing, Griffith rules the world now; that’s all I’m gonna tell you.
Elf Island
Volume: 35-40
Guts and his Crew sail to an island where the elf king lives; there’s a hope that he can make Casca normal again. However, the way to the elf island is not easy. Lots of obstacles and dangers are ahead of them.
