Best Anime From The 2000s

35+ Best Anime From The 2000’s (Recommendations)

Updated July 29, 2022 by Ernie

Is it just me or are we really getting older? Cause I’ve been thinking about it lately, just how fast the night changes. This sounds like my favorite band One Direction. WAAITTTTT…. 1D is not from the 2000s. But I heard they all love Pokemon, sadly, Pokemon also isn’t an anime from anywhere between 2000 and 2010 either.

Table of Contents

In grief of not having the possibility of Pokemon being on this list, I can still present to you a list of the best anime of the 2000’s. We all know that this is really a golden era of mecha anime, but we should still give recognition to some slice of life anime that will give you the lessons you need in life.

I know you’re a bit curious about the best anime that will bring you into nostalgic moments of great history, sooo… let’s cut the wait guys because here are 36 anime from the 2000’s.

NOSTALGIC ANIME INTRODUCED BETWEEN THE YEARS 2000 AND 2010

At first glance, you wouldn’t be wrong to think this anime is just another slice-of-life story. It is, but it is not something you can predict the plot.

A few spoilers are coming up! The show seems like a slice-of-life, but the twist is that the main character, Haruhi, is basically God, as well as her friends are an alien, an esper, a time traveler, and a guy who has a lot of bad luck.

This makes a big change to the formula. Not only does each episode have a lot of supernatural stuff, but Haruhi is also the main bad guy! Since everybody has to start dancing around her to make sure she doesn’t destroy the world by accident. Oh, she doesn’t know she’s God, that’s for sure. Fun!

Without giving away any spoilers, every episode does exactly what it needs to do as a part of the whole. Even the slowest parts of the story are exciting and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Whether it’s the way the main characters’ relationships change or even the action-packed battle scenes, there’s always something interesting to see. Saber and  Shirou make good use of the spotlight, and it’s hard not to be drawn in by the way they grow closer together.

Fate/Stay Night is more than the sum of the parts. All together, they make a beautiful and addicting 24 episodes that makes it extremely difficult not to begin watching the next episode as soon as one ends.

Justice, the gunslinger, had the number two headband, and Afro’s father had the number one headband. People say that the person with the number 1 headband is the best warrior in the world, and that only someone with the number 2 headband can beat them.

The series is set in a feudal but also high tech Japan, in which the Afro Samurai faces enemies and even old friends on his way to getting revenge.

The miniseries Afro Samurai only has five episodes. But the series has a lot of power. This anime series is a perfect example of 2000s anime, the scene, production, the animation and plot really is making this anime the best one.

When talking about nostalgic anime, we could never not see this card game anime. Are you also that person who really likes to collect cards? I don’t know if you already have those Pokemon Cards, but trust me, Yu-Gi-Oh cards can be played better.

Well, the journey of this card anime begins with a shy high schooler named Yugi Moto as he gets the pieces of the Millennium Puzzle from his grandfather. The Millennium Puzzle is a broken Egyptian artifact. When Yugi puts the puzzle back together, the ancient spirit of a pharaoh takes over him. Yugi, as well as his friends Tea, Joey, and Hondo, keep the puzzle safe because it holds powerful secrets that many people want to get their hands on.

You would be thinking that Yu-Gi-Oh should not be on this list given that its season zero was released in 1998,  2 years after its manga debut in 1996. But the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh which is “Heart of the Cards” premiered in April 2000, making this anime start our 2000s anime journey.

Skip this one if you want to feel good and read a fast-paced story. Casshern Sins is sad and depressing, but not as much as The Grave of the Fireflies. Most of the time, it moves along the story path as slowly as a hurt animal.

This might sound like a harsh critique. But that’s what makes the show feel like a show. In this universe, people have pretty much died out. And robots that never die have conquered the world.

But one day, they lose their ability to live forever. And as their society crumbles, they wonder if there is an iCloud heaven.

At times, the show is indeed very philosophical, with a lot of symbolism, long pauses, and an overall creepy feel. It really pulls you into this dark and scary world. This really is an anime that you will never ever forget.

This movie is about two friends from childhood and how life and love aren’t always fair. As the name suggests, it shows how the main characters drift apart as life tries to force them to move to new areas, do things differently, and meet new people day by day.

They try to keep the past alive. However, as the proximity between them grows, fate’s grip gets less strong.

It’s a really lovely story. And if you’ve ever seen the inside of a long-distance relationship or even had a good friend shift away, you’ll understand these characters’ struggles on so many levels.

Hell Girl is an anime where the monster always wins. This is not how the world naturally works, but this actually happens in this anime.

In the world of this anime, you can deliver a knock on somebody’s door, whether you hate that person or not. Hell Girl will kill them every time, no matter what.

The best part is that you’ve got to give her your soul as payment for her help. Every episode is about different people, their wants, their prejudices, their anger, and their desire for revenge. The only constant is Hell Girl. So, to go back to my first sentence, who is the real monster here?

Eden of the East talks about some pretty serious social and political issues. On the other hand, the anime will give you some fun, charming characters spiced with hints of romance. The funny relationship between the two main characters, Saki and Akira, is a lot of fun to watch.

Eden of the East sets a high standard with its nearly perfect graphics, good music, intriguing and likable characters, and fast-paced, gripping plot. Even though the series is over with two movies (Paradise Lost and The King of Eden), the way it ends is so fitting and moving that it can stand on its own.

Well, think about what Halloween would be like if it was a show that was also kind of funny. I’m kinda referring to Soul Eater. The story centers around a school where groups of two or three people learn how to work together to make the Death Scythe of Shinigami.

Now, I’m going to talk about these groups of two. It can be three if you’re the son of the principal, because in each group, a person turns into a weapon while the other uses it.

When you see the show, it will all make sense. But yes, it’s strange. And the goal is to get 100 souls: 99 evil souls and 1 witch soul. The way the world is set up is certainly interesting. Even though the main plot isn’t too complicated, there are plenty of other things going on. Plus, the great writing of the characters more than makes up for it.

The popularity of reminiscing 2000s anime series is one of the reasons why you should start watching Inuyasha.  Even if they haven’t seen the original series, fans of shounen and romance anime will want to watch it just to recognize all the memes that somehow relate to this anime.

There are a lot of characters in the series, and some of them are almost impossible to be likable… I guess you know what I mean. Inuyasha is about how the main characters, Kagome, a person from modern-day Tokyo, and Inuyasha, a half-dog demon from the Feudal period, try to get back the pieces of the broken Shikon Jewel.

During their adventure, they meet many people who want to help them find the jewel shards, but for different reasons. Along the way, they also face many powerful enemies, the most dangerous of whom are Naraku and his many forms.

I know you’ve heard of Bleach, Ichigo, and the Bankai. Well, this clearly is the Shonen anime from the 2000s that everyone knows and loves. The show is about Ichigo Kurosaki’s life after he becomes a Soul Reaper.

As he learns how to use these new powers, Ichigo finds out that most of his peers also have powers. Even though the show starts out with a different shade, things change when Rukia, the Soul Reaper who gave Ichigo some of her power, is sentenced to death. Ichigo and his friends set out to save her by infiltrating the Soul Society, but they get caught up in a bigger plot.

Bleach is action-packed, and sword fights are taken to a whole new level. Bleach is a great choice for anime fans who want to watch a long action series. The series has 366 episodes so far, but in March 2020, it was revealed that the last part of Bleach would be turned into an animated movie to end the series.

This next anime is based on the light novel series by Takashi Takeuchi and Kinoko Nasu. It is made up of eight films and a few shorter movies. The detective agency, Garan no Dou, looks into cases that have to do with the supernatural, and Shiki Ryougi is at the center of them.

This anime is indeed a complex series with a timeline that doesn’t go in a straight line, a lot of mature and hard-to-watch scenes, and a few films that aren’t very fun to watch at first. But upon knowing everything about how things flow and their watch order, you can clearly appreciate how amazing the plot line of this anime is.

The setting of this anime, a school in Osaka, is one of the things that makes it stand out. Every character has that Kansai accent, which is somehow unusual for all over Japan.

Even though people who don’t speak Japanese might not catch the jokes and puns that come from this, it gives the show a sense of authenticity. It would not have been there anyway.

Because of all of these things, Lovely Complex is a great choice. It’s a fun show that makes you feel good and shows feelings and worries that everyone has at least for a time. It does a good job of showing the ups and downs that emerge with love, heartbreak, and teenage years, while also making it all funny.

I’ll start by saying that you don’t usually see such soft colors in some kinds of mecha shows. Well, Eureka Seven is mostly about growing up. Our main character and narrator, Renton, and the entire cast change over the course of the story.

And the actors are pretty great. The first 13 episodes give the characters a lot of time to develop, so when the story gets going, it’s likely to pull you in tight.

You’ve probably dreamt about going back in time at some point. Well, as you might guess from the name, this show is taking you solely on a single hell of a trip through time. Defying grandfather paradox at its finest!

It remains committed to the basic idea of time travel, which is that even minor changes in history can have big effects on the future, and usually do. But what makes this anime stand out is how well the characters are written. They are very easy to remember.

This anime show is a must-see because of how our main character grows as a person, how beautiful the world is, how good the overall plot is, and how good the music is.

This next anime is a shojo-style romantic comedy with a lot of satire and cliches. In the series, Haruhi as well as the other members of the host club get into trouble. Haruhi gets a scholarship to go to Ouran High, which is mostly a school for rich kids. Haruhi would have to join the host club to help pay off the debt she incurred when she broke a very expensive vase that belonged to the club.

In the first episode, the club members slowly figure out that Haruhi is a girl, even though she looks like a boy. For the remainder of the show, they all try to hide Haruhi’s true identity. Satire that goes too far is among the reasons why many fans still like to watch the show.

The stories of Tohru Honda and the strange Sohma family is what Fruit Basket is all about.. and when I say strange, I really mean STRANGEEE.

Tohru finds out by accident that thirteen family members are controlled by animals from the Chinese Zodiac legend. This curse makes the family distant and causes them a lot of emotional trouble over the course of the series. People still feel a lot of different emotions, but everyone has their own way of drawing people in.

This anime has been a favorite for years, and among the thousands of people who believe it, Naruto has been one of the most served dishes in the anime industry. I mean… if you could eat anime, Naruto would be the staple. It was a story about a boy who’d been picked on but kept his head up and went all the way to the top.

Many people became interested in the world of ninjas because of their hand signs. The amazing way they fight with their hands and how their jutsu looks is a thing to behold.

Even if you have never seen the show, you have seen the fight between Gaara and Lee. Or at least something bad happens to Sasuke, right? It depends on what you’ve done in your browser before.

This anime is among the funniest and best comedies of the last decade because it can make you laugh out loud over and over again while also having some serious parts.

The most important parts of the story are told from the main character Sato’s point of view. In the light novel, Sato has a problem with drugs. This part is left out of the anime, so people who haven’t read the book may find the first few of the episodes strange and wonder about the talking fridge and furniture that clearly resembles those in Beauty and the Beast.

Any way you look at it, Sato needs therapy badly, and he needs good therapy. But because he is so bad with people, he can only get emotional support from a kind random person named Misaki.

This may sound strange and off-putting, but the show is fun, energetic, and interesting through its unique sets of escapades spiced with creative direction and clever dialogue. It also puts a lot of focus on the characters.

Bakemonogatari has a unique style, personality, and way of telling a story, which truly stands out from other anime. Because of this, and the fact that it’s among the most popular and thought-provoking books of the last 10 years, it deserves to be on this list.

I’ve often heard from anime fans that no anime can tell the story as brilliantly in just a few episodes as Baccano. This is because not only is the main story great, but it is also made up of smaller stories that all seem to lead to the same conclusion by chance. There is no doubt that the show is influenced by the West. Every scene has that “Godfather” or “mafia” look.

To avoid giving anything away (trust me, that would be a big mistake), I’ll just say that you must feel confused initially, because that’s the only way you’ll start to understand the masterly writing by the end.

Mononoke transports viewers to a nightmare world full of guilt, anger, and mystery by using unsettling visuals and sounds. It’s a wonderful series about bad people and bad feelings. This is really what’s keeping its fans and viewers attached.

You couldn’t give more praise to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It’s smart, tight, and goes as far as to explore its science fiction ideas. With its complex social and political plots and well-thought-out ideas, it’s a treat for the mind and a great example of what the series has to provide.

We watch as Section 9 looks into different cases, mostly in short episodes. All the while, there is a larger story that keeps going through each season. It is much better put together than Shirow’s original manga, which had rich, deep, and complicated ideas but a plot that was a little bit all over the place. This change makes the stories more exciting and interesting, whether it’s the big story arcs that tie into them in a clever way or not.

Samurai Champloo was made by Shinichiro Watanabe, who also made Cowboy Bebop. It is a beautifully made piece that utilizes characters and settings to take viewers on an amazing journey.

The fight scenes seem to be action-packed and smoothly animated, the characters’ expressions are natural and realistic, and the overall appearance of the anime is a reflection of what the series as a whole has been trying to do: show the lives of three strange people while blending different cultures to make a cohesive, highly entertaining anime.

Mugen is a troubled street fighter who doesn’t have any personal goals. Jin is a quiet, conventional samurai who doesn’t have a master. And Fuu is a strange, loud-mouthed girl who helps bring them all together.

This anime is a great anime to watch because it looks at so many different topics, like criminal justice, genius, and fixation. It shows a dilemma between different pathways: the kind path, in which everyone gets a second opportunity, and the harsh path, in which every criminal is dying just as an example to others, no matter what crime they committed.

In this 2006 anime Death Note, the boundary present between villain and hero is not set by the story’s point of view. Instead, it is up to the audience to decide.

As both sides keep taking advantage of the weak, the story is full of moral complexity in the spirit of serving “the greater good.” This is what makes it so interesting. In the end, this isn’t only a great anime to start with but also one that you should watch again and again.

Gurren Lagann is indeed a great mech tv series that you might like even if you don’t like mechs. The humans, who are made to remain underground, fight against the Beastmen, who are the coolest new kids.

But what really draws me to the show is how well the characters are written. We have Kamina, the popularly known loudmouth who has so much force of personality that he might start his personal religion.Simon is the main character, and he’s a nice guy who everyone likes. In the later parts of the series, he changes in an amazing way.

And Yoko, who is a badass sniper girl who needs her personalized show for sure. So, once more, there are a lot of mech transformations as well as rousing shouts. But it’s such a unique display that you really need to watch.

I’m having trouble putting into words why and how this movie is so good because it has different parts. You’ll get what I’m saying when you watch it.

Since Miyazaki made it, you already understand that the world will be beautiful. It looks like a combination of steampunk technology, European culture, and the art style that Studio Ghibli is known for.

In the story, an evil spell turns Sophie into an old lady. But she finds the first Bird Person, and that he has this amazing castle that moves.

It’s hard to say much about it other than that it was memorable and magical. If you’ve never seen it, you should add it to your list of things to do.

Fans of the more recent anime like Run with the Wind, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Haikyuu may also enjoy shows like Eyeshield 21 and Major. None of the other shows that came out during the decade had as much of an effect as Fighting Spirit.

Ippo Makunouchi, a strong but bullied teenager, finds his self belief through boxing. It’s a journey full of sweat, laughter, tears, and blood. Matches that are hard to watch are followed by episodes that focus on the main characters and show how great they are, like how funny Mamoru Takamura is.

Including its highly conceptualized themes and interesting atmosphere, the anime version of Yuki Urushibara’s manga Mushishi has become very popular in recent years, and both fans and critics have praised it.

It’s about a mysterious man named Ginko who travels around Japan, helping protect people from primitive beings called mushi that most people can’t see. Early on, Ginko uses an analogy to show that mushi are part of the most basic and basic level of the order of nature.

People live on one level, but the mushi are much more connected to the core of nature. People often have trouble with Mushi because they don’t understand the creatures.

Mushishi will hook you up with stories you can relate to and ideas that will make you think. Each episode could be thought of as a lesson from a philosophical perspective, and it is suggested that the viewer wait a little while between episodes to let every story sink in.

Studio Ghibli is indeed able to show something at its purest, and that is the innocence of childhood. Most of their work, like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, seems to maximize childlike wonder and adventure.

In the second movie, Chihiro, a young girl, accidentally crosses over into another spirit world. Most of the movie is about her working and living with other spirits in the desperate hope that she’ll be able to return to her own world.

There isn’t a big action scene or anything. It’s just an atmosphere full of creativity and wonder.

Monster has a story that is very exciting. Don’t be scared off by the fact that there are 74 episodes. This show is so addicting that you’ll be hooked up to the craving of watching it the whole time.

That’s really all you could want in a commercially successful thriller series: a large cast of well-developed, interesting, and fleshed-out characters; careful handling of each of its numerous arcs, big and small, to make them as interesting on their own as they are in the sense of the series as a whole; great action and tension; and a firm grasp of how to build up drama and resolve it in a pleasant way.

In addition to this, there is a sense of the mysterious and otherworldly as Tenma goes further and further into the darkest rabbit holes, at the very edge of what humans can understand.

When talking about Nostalgia, this psychological mecha anime is not something you should skip. Well, it’s kinda proven by most people who have watched this 2-season anime. This anime really is an 11 out of 10 nostalgia.

Amazing mechas and psychological blessing, Zero… I mean Lelouch really is something you should watch out for. He was actually blessed to have the power of Geass where he can control other people by just making them do what you want them to do… like a puppet but a fully conscious human version of it.

I don’t know about you but the ending really is something you should really give highlights on. It’s something you would expect but didn’t…. Do you know what I mean? If not, then it’s your time to start watching Code Geass.

In this alternate history, aliens rule the Earth during their period, making it a place where rockets and samurai can live together. Gintama is about how the Yorozuya crew gets into trouble when they take on handyman work that always has some surprises.

Gintama is mostly a poor imitation of a shonen anime, and it’s pretty funny. I don’t know if it’s a poor imitation… we can say it is more-likely a parody that will somehow make you laugh.

Edo is among the largest and also most complete humourous casts in anime. Gintama is always breaking the fourth wall, making adult jokes and doing gut-bustingly funny slapstick. Whenever the anime reaches the point of being too serious, it’s violent, sad, and hard to forget.

Although the original Fullmetal Alchemist series that was aired in 2003 would have been a good fit for this list, it is still a good choice to give this spot to the reimagined, improved, and longer Brotherhood instead.

There’s not much more to say about the show. People have said that it’s one of the best animated shows ever. What’s not to like about a game with a cool idea like alchemy, a dirty world, some great battle scenes, and a cute, mostly-metal duo?

Also, the bad guys in this story deserve a lot of praise. I’ve never been scared and interested in a bad guy as much as I was in the chimera, and Father probably made me have daddy issues in some way.
