It’s also hard to pick a protagonist between the male or female lead in both of these shows, as Soul and Maka are equally relevant to the story, just like Akame and Tatsumi.

Once again, back with another non-modern story with castles instead of cities. The Holy Knights are the state soldiers who are dirty in their ways. So of course, we have a group of bandits, literally named after sins trying to take them down.

This plot is one of the closest to Akame Ga Kill’s objective and final goal. There is a light mood but enough seriousness to keep it interesting, and also very good fights, that you should read the manga after season 2 because of…reasons. Animation reasons.

17. Hunter x Hunter 2011

You would think Hunter x Hunter is a happy-go-lucky show about kids going on adventure and having a great time! Except it’s not. No one has a good time in that show. The main character wants to find his dad, the journey of which is filled with pain, darkness and a lot of fighting to save his life.

There’s no epic assassin girl, but there’s an epic assassin boy, who’s as much of a good love interest to Gon as Akame is to Tatsumi. Arguably better. (Obviously better).

Claymore. Everyone that’s not a demon has the same weapon, a CLAYMORE. Death is very common indeed, and for the second half the series, Clair is against the organization, not with it. Including this anime’s equivalent to Tatsumi, it really has a lot of common traits to Akame Ga kill.

With an evil group being the vampires, and the hunters trying to take them down, Castlevania makes for a pretty close horror experience to today’s anime. In this one, there’s an edgy side character that uses a sword to fight as well. There’s a ton of violence and murder, which adds to the horror aspect of this show. Definitely something great to watch, and play if you have the time.

Black Clover is an amazing shonen, with similarities to Akame Ga Kill in its setting more than anything. It’s not particularly dark, though you can easily find maturity in the writing of this show if you look for it. The anime is pretty much medieval, or a bit more recent than that, which puts it around the same time period as Akame Ga Kill.

It also is about magic users. This magic being extremely diverse and creative in its uses and variants. It’s also interesting because these shows are two sides of the same coin. In AGK, the king is evil but the people working for him are good.

In Black Clover, the King is amazing(well…the relevant one). The rest of the upper class are horrible and discriminative. When you reach the Eye of the Midnight Sun arc, you’ll see an even deeper dilemma and conflict between two equally relatable sides.

One similarity these anime share is the artstyle. Their aesthetics look pretty similar. Also, the fights can really get bloody in Shaman King. Power system doesn’t fall behind either, soul weapons are your new imperial arms.

Bleach is also a show that starts off with the protagonist fighting the higher-power. His friend is a Shinigami and he replaces her in her job due to her injury. The Soul Reaper’s higher powers put her on death row for letting a human do her job, and he has to fight them for it.

Over time we also find out they did many questionable things (killing innocent Hollows, eradicating Quincies etc). There’s a subtle yet thrilling darkness, a spicy amount of blood and gore, as well as top-tier action you can’t miss out on.

All characters have a distinct ability except the wrecking ball guy, he’s just super smart, if that counts, and we have an edgy side character girl too to top it off! If I didn’t tell you the title, you’d think I was talking about Akame Ga Kill, but I’m talking about this manga.

Mirai Nikki or Future Diary is an anime about survival games. The main character is playing games where he could lose his life and let me tell you, a lot of people do. Like seriously. Finding people that live in this show is like finding a hedgehog in a soda factory. Near impossible(nearly, unless it’s a really swag hedgehog).

The horror aspect is also a great similarity on a thrilling scale. There’s also a main sweet boy and a way cooler girl leading the show in both of these anime.

9. Magi

There are two main similarities between Magi and Akame Ga Kill. One of them is the political aspect, they both have a lot to do with governments and their mixed moralities. The other one is…power system. Djinn weapons are most likely the closest weapons you’ll ever see to Imperial Arms.

There’s also a setting that’s pre-industrial, though Magi takes place in the Middle East and AGK is medieval. Also, each has an amazing prequel, with Magi’s being…well…better, due to having an advantage over AGK, that being SINBAD the CHAD BEST BOY.

8. Berserk

Berserk is an anime (and manga) about Guts. There’s betrayal and mercenaries in this show on our side, as well as some evil traitor on the antagonist area. Both are highly gloomy and emotional series with next-level action. The setting is medieval/pre-industrial for each of these series as well. The main characters, though they have different personalities, have to see a lot of darkness and fight their way through it even though they never asked for it.

7. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

There’s a lot of politics in this show, that cover a lot of topics: discrimination, corruption, proper leadership etc that are really worth sticking in for. There’s also a cruel “truth“(no, literally) that spares no one, no matter their role in the story. Everyone gets treated fairly.

Tokyo Ghoul is a horror anime. Its gray morality between sides is more apparent than anywhere else in the human vs ghoul conflict. The main character himself has a very hard time picking a side, which makes it very interesting in that aspect. The action is VERY high quality, VERY bloody, VERY good for people who like horror.

It’s got deaths, to a good amount too, but not unreasonable. The only issue is a lot of its seasons are rushed, and reading the manga might give a more full feel on the story, but for anyone looking for gore and action it will work for you.

Attack on Titan’s first similarities to Akame ga Kill are very simple, amazing action and hardcore horror. It does go deeper than that, however. It’s an anime about fighting and killing giant zombie-like titans that eat people, until you find out the origins of the titans. The more seasons go on, the stronger the moral dilemmas and the side picking.

It becomes hard to choose a side and support it full-heartedly. Top that with the fact that this show has a LOT of blood and death all-throughout, it really makes for a good recommendation to people who want something similar to Akame Ga Kill.

Part 5 of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series takes place in modern Italy. It’s about Giorno Giovanna, who joins a section of the mafia in order to take down the leader as well as take over the gang. Not assassins vs a king, but a group of gangsters vs their thoroughly evil leader.

Stands are extremely creative powes that never get boring and can be even more enjoyable than Imperial Arms. The colors are bright, though there’s a lot of blood, gore and death of different kinds that never lets it get repetitive. Amazing watch, Di Molto if I do say so myself.

3. Vinland Saga

Vinland saga is about Thorfinn, who’s trying to kill a certain viking in order to avenge his father. The problem is, he eventually has to work with him in order to take down an evil king. There’s no superpowers in this anime, though the setting is completely medieval. There’s as Nikolai Belinski said: “Blood, gore, sinew, bone, organs, pulmonary systems!”.

War is all over the place, and so is the hype. There’s also the fact that the protagonist’s father taught him to sympathize and make peace with his enemies, which is a different approach from AGK’s fighting to the death. So seeing Thorfinn consider this approach is a good insight to what Akame Ga Kill “could’ve been…“

2. Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen and Akame Ga Kill are very similar. It’s about finding the body parts of the demon Sukuna, all of which have powers in them, very similar to Imperial Arms and their origin. It’s ongoing, no ending yet, but the protag’s literal goal is to die.

There’s also a lot of dark, gory fights and a genuinely painful amount of deaths that put these anime very, very close to each-other, though Jujutsu Kaisen has more quality writing and a more properly composed story.

Fate Apocrypha is about a battle between teams of 7 over the Holy Grail, so if you want a lot of death, this is a perfect show. The protagonist is clueless yet thrown into the mess and has to fight. Noble Phantasms are a great replacement for Imperial Arms, which gives you a good-styled power system, and both of these anime have a fabulous mentor that’s as sick as they get.
