32. Jubei-chan: The Ninja Girl
Jiyu Nanohana looks like any other student, but she is the reincarnation of Yagyu Jubein, a famous samurai. Whenever she is in a pinch she transforms into the legendary samurai gaining all of his skill and fighting ability through the power of the “Lovely Eye patch“. With her newfound power, she decides to put it to use to protect her family against their sworn enemies, a rival clan that is stubbornly trying to take them over.

30. Peace Maker Kurogane
Ichimura Tetsunosuke was left traumatized after watching the execution of his parents at the hands of the Choushuu. The only thing on his mind since the incident is his desire for revenge.

29. Samurai Deeper Kyou
On the battlefield of Sekigahara, two swordsmen are facing each other in a decisive fight. One of them is a Samurai possessing a special ability inherited from his Clan, his sword skills only matched by his honor and pride. His name, Kyoushirou.
The other warrior is known as the thousand-man killer, a fierce warrior with eyes and hair as scarlet as the color of blood. He also goes by the nickname “Demon Eyes Kyou”. As the extraordinary duel was raging, it was interrupted by the fall of a meteorite right in the middle of the fighters. When the smoke started to disperse, the warriors were nowhere to be found, not even the remains of their bodies were retrieved.
Four years into the future, a bounty hunter, Yuya Shiina, was hunting a charlatan doctor with large debts also known to be a very naughty guy, this man turned out to be the one and only Kyoushirou. He was captured and the bounty hunter was taking him back to claim the reward, on their way, they were attacked by a monster whose target was actually the lost warrior.
In the face of danger, the soul of Kyou who is residing in Kyoushirou’s body finally woke up from his long slumber. He defeated the monster with ease and now seeks to know where his real body is and the whereabouts of the original soul of his borrowed body.

28. Gibiate
In the year 2030, our world took a dark turn when a viral disease appeared and reached all continents. This disease is called “Gibia”, it turns any human being into a different type of monster and no cure nor vaccine has been discovered yet. The people are living in constant fear.
One professor is still trying to develop a cure and came to his aid a samurai and a ninja who seem to have traveled to the future in a way or another. No other explanation there, since they claim they are from the Edo period.
Their main job is to defend the professor who is on the verge of a breakthrough. Using skills and techniques that are now lost from modern people. They repel everything that comes in their way, monsters and humans alike.

27. Intrigue in the Bakumatsu
Yoiro Akizuki is a mercenary putting his sword at the service of anyone willing to put the right price. Traveling to Japan, and accepting usual jobs isn’t just for the money he has a purpose.
He is searching for supernatural items and each time he locates one it ends up in a bloody massacre. He then meets a theater troop who seems to seek the same items but for much darker reasons. Then step by step it is what looks like a huge conspiracy that is unfolding.

26. House of Five Leaves
Masanosuke Akitsu is a ronin searching to serve under a master. His swordsman skills are above average but because of his timid personality, like a warrior, he is considered unreliable. After multiple rejections, he starts to wonder if being a samurai is the right path to follow.
Just before discarding his sword, he is hired as a bodyguard by Yaichi, a happy-go-lucky man who seems to have employed him on a whim.
The carefree man turns out to be the leader of a gang known as the Five Leaves, gang conduction illicit activities.
Masanasuke is now torn, his principle as a samurai tells him to follow righteousness and leave the gang but his curiosity wants to know why they are so motivated because it doesn’t seem like it is the money that is driving them.

25. Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran
This anime isn’t exactly following the unfolding of a story. Each episode is unique and has its own story. All of them revolve around a female Samurai named Ran. Ran is an extraordinary Swordsman, her skills with the katana are yet to be matched. Her only flaw is her love or addiction toSake.
On her journey, she meets Lady Meow of the Iron Cat Fist, a Chinese martial artist. We will follow their adventures while they are traveling together with no specific goal in mind.

24. Kurozuka
The story starts in the 12th century. Minamoto no Yoritomo was the first shogun to manage to rule all of Japan. His brother Minamoto no Yoshitsune AKA Kurou had a deep respect and admiration toward him. On a day like any other, the shogun was found dead, and after examination of the scene, the people ruled it as a suicide. Filled with grief, Kurou leaves for the mountains to clear his mind. There he meets a breathtaking woman called Kuromitsu and falls in love with her almost instantly. But after he spends some time at her side he realizes that there is something more to her than meets the eye. She is hiding something, something dark and terrifying. Soon after Kurou becomes conscious of the fact that he is not aging anymore.
He became an immortal being and lived for a thousand years watching Japan grow and evolve. This only purpose in life is to find a way to end his life while trying to discover if his condition is somehow related to the death of his brother and Kuromitsu.

23. Drifters
In 1600, a raging war was taking place, during the battle of Sekigahara, Toyohisa Shimasu was entrusted with the critical role of defending the rear of his squadron. But as he was retreating, he was gravely wounded but was suddenly transported to what looks like a white modern hallway.
Hundreds of doors were spreading before his eyes and one man was standing in front of him. His name, Murasaki. A door opened and Toyohise was sucked right into land in a world that was certainly not his own.
In that strange world, all the fighters that were presumed dead were here, alive and kicking along with majestic creatures never seen before.
He then learns the purpose of his presence, the name of the people summoned are called “Drifters”. The Drifters are currently fighting in a war against the “Ends”, warriors of the Orte Empire whose sole purpose is to eradicate all Drifters from their world.
Toyohisa along with warlord Nobunaga Oda and archer Yoishi Suketaka Nasu was given the task to stop the advance of the “Ends” who are growing in power every day.

22. Yasuke
Yasuke was once known as the fearsome Black Samurai. Wanting to put his life of bloodshed behind him, he retired, hides his identity, and becomes a boatman. But his peaceful life was not about to last.
He meets a young girl with mysterious powers, this girl was being chased by shady people. Still having the moral code and pride of a samurai, Yasuke drew his sword once again to help her. But now the enemies of the girl have him on their radar as well. Dragged back into a life of fighting and conflict, he decides to take the girl under his wing and help her to get out of this dangerous situation.

21. Ninja Scroll
Betrayed by his former master, Jubei Kibagami to escape him and his political aspiration becomes a ronin and to make ends meet he now works as a swordsman for hire. Living a life that he finds satisfying, his past comes crashing down when he saves a female ninja called Kagero who was attacked by a man with the strange ability to turn his flesh into stone.
Kagero is the only survivor of her clan, and what caused their annihilation was the simple task of investigating a plague that killed every living thing in a certain village. Of course, Jubei wants nothing to do with all this mess but the enemies now know his face and the allies of the stone man are not gonna let him wander off peacefully. The” Devils of Kimon” is the name of this group of ninja with special abilities.
Jubei, still stubbornly clinging to his way of life, hopes are crushed when a government spy poisons him only to blackmail him into getting at the bottom for the mystery to get the antidote.

20. Shigurui
During the Edo Era, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga had the chance to rule in a peaceful period. To spice things up a bit he organizes a sword-fighting tournament, a tournament held with a real sword instead of wooden ones, even if it goes against their oldest traditions.
One of the matches paired a one-armed fighter, Fujiki Gennosuke, and blind one, Irako Seigen. Both of them are the apprentice of the man known to be the strongest swordsman of all times, Iwamoto Kogan. So this match promises to be an interesting one even with the indispositions of both fighters. But victory in the tournament is not the only thing on the line for the two apprentices, this match will also determine who is the one and only successor of their master.
Which one is fated to lift the burden of keeping the sword fighting style of Iwamoto alive?

19. Basilisk
The Iga and Kouga ninja clan have been enemies for centuries and the war between them is still nowhere near its end. Too much bloodshed, anger, and hatred have been accumulating and they entered a vicious circle of retaliation that no one is willing to break. By pure surprise, something no one expected happens. The warlord Ieyasu Togawa ordered a cease-fire, forcing both clans to put down their weapons.
Years later, even if the killing stopped, the hatred between the two clans is still burning. But Gennosuke Kouga and Oboro Iga, the next heirs of their respective clans, fell in love with each other. And to ensure that both clans will maintain peace for many more centuries, they got married. Their plan failed spectacularly when both clans started igniting the fire of war again to make sure there will never be peace between them.

18. Sengoku Basara
Sengoku Basara is a series that takes place during the end of the Sengoku Period in Japan. A lot of its characters are based and named after true historical figures.
At the time, Japan was divided under the rule of multiple Warlords. One of them, Oda Nobunaga, AKA the “Demon King” set in motion a plan to conquer all of Japan. To stop his ascension, two rival Warlords, Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura, put aside their hatred for each over to ally.
The main protagonist however is none other than Masamune’s strategist and personal bodyguard Kojūrō, a master wielder of katana and wakizashi. His extraordinary battle skills, his gracious yet deadly techniques, the refinement of every single one of his moves during fights, landed him the title of “The Right Eye of the Dragon“.
Having an immense burn to shoulder because of his formidable talent in martial arts and battle strategy, Kojūrō always has to find a way to exceed his limits to be able to break all the walls that are emerging on his path.

17. Mushibugyo
Japan is infested by man-eating giant insects. To establish a line of defense, the government created the Insect Magistrate Office whose sole job is to recruit powerful warriors capable of fighting the insects.
Jinbee Tsukishima, following in the footsteps of his father, dreams to become a swordsman above all others. Driven by guilt, after an incident that he caused, he wishes to take his father’s place in the Insect Magistrate Office who cannot fight anymore.
The Office rejected his candidature because of his lack of skills, but once they witnessed his bravery after saving Haru from death, they changed their minds. But the fact that he is not strong enough is still a fact, will he survive the job?

16. Hakuouki
Chizuru Yukimura’s father is a doctor, because of his work he would sometimes leave home for days. Chizuru is used to this by now, but after one month with no contact, dark thoughts fill her mind and she decides to start looking for him. Being dangerous for a woman to travel alone, she disguises herself as a man and starts her journey, her first destination Kyoto.
On the road, she bears witness to a gruesome crime. White-haired men were murdering ronins in cold blood. That’s when the Shinsengumi makes their entrance to get rid of the criminals. But Chizuru is now a liability since she saw everything. The Shinsengumi ends up kidnapping her to see what they can do to silence her. What stops them from killing her, is the identity of her father since they are searching for his whereabouts.
So instead of death she is now staying at their headquarters and has to deal with the many problems the group face. From internal conflicts between the members to political pressure from the government without forgetting the many enemies who are after their heads, Chizuru’s life turns upside down and she even decides to learn how to use a sword to stop being such a burden.

15. Samurai 7
The storyline of this anime is set in the future, in a futuristic version of planet earth. In this universe, the old-fashioned Samurai have mechanized bodies to enhance their physical abilities. Different factions of those samurais started an internal war that turned into a bloody massacre. After many years of bloodshed, the people can now finally enjoy peace.
But the after-effects of the war still lingers, the technology used by the samurai is now known to the world and bandits took advantage of the information. They made mechanical bodies for themselves and started going by the name “Nobuseri”. They stole all the food that they could put their hands on, abducted women and children, created fear in the hearts of all the citizens of the land since none of them were safe anymore and had no way of defending their possession.
A group of farmers from Kanna Village decides to take the matter into their own hands and pay samurais to be their bodyguards, their protectors. But samurai wages are not cheap and their village is poor, their only means of payment is rice so no samurai would take on the job. By what you can call a miracle happened, 7 samurai, all of them with tremendous skills and abilities, accepted to help the villagers and enter an epic battle against the bandits. Even though they are greatly outnumbered, the overwhelming talent of those samurai are repelling the small army that they are facing.

14. Brave 10
Isanami was a priestess at the Izumo temple. She was raised there, her adoptive father was the head priest of the temple. On a day like any other, ninja assassins came to the temple searching for her. They burned everything, everybody died, the temple crumbled and the only survivor was Isanami. Now on the run, the ninjas aren’t far behind and are bound to catch up to her. By pure coincidence, she stumbles upon Saizou Kirigakure, a ronin who gets caught up in her problems even though he had no intention of helping her.
Left with no choice, he escorts her to Ueda Castle to seek the help of Yukimura Sanada, one of the most powerful lords of the country. Sanadas agreed after witnessing the devastating power of darkness residing inside Isanami and skillfully ropes Saizou to join their group as well.
Saizou is known throughout the land to never have been defeated and that his sword skills and ninjutsu are at a level beyond what normal humans can achieve. Under the command of Sanada he meets other extraordinary ninjas with special abilities, Sanada has been searching and gathering unique warriors to serve under his command. But why does he need so much power?

13. Blade of the immortal
The “Hundred Man Killer”, the name itself is enough to send shivers down your spine. This is the name of Manji, a demon among man, a ruthless murder. As the name suggests he killed more than hundreds of innocent persons. But what is even more frightening about him is the fact that he is immortal.
He gained this gift after a noun placed a bloodworm capable of healing all injuries. But an immortal life is nothing but a curse. As the plan of the noun was unfolding nicely, she gave him a condition upon relieving him from his burden.
Manji must repent. Not only must he repent of his deeds by killing a hundred evil men but he must truly repent in his heart and regret his actions. Forced to follow the noun rule, he sets out on a journey of atonement.
During his travels, he gets attached to a girl named Rin. Having now someone to protect, and starting to face foes stronger and stronger. He starts training again to polish his sword skills to gain the necessary power to protect the one he cares about.

12. Samurai Champloo
Fuu Kasumi is an incredibly clumsy person, so imagine what would happen if a person like her is working as a waitress in a tea house. The only disaster is to be expected. Well, one day she spills a drink on a mean-looking group of samurai who immediately started harassing her for the blunder.
Mugen, another samurai steps in and defeats the lot in a matter of seconds using a sword-fighting technique that resembles breakdance.
On a roll, Mugen continues to pick fights in the teahouse and challenges a ronin named Jin. Jin is also a formidable swordsman but is more on the traditional side. They exchange strikes, the fight escalates.
As both of them have tremendous skills they finally end up destroying the place and killing the magistrate’s son as collateral damage.
They were immediately apprehended by the authorities for their crimes and sent for execution.
Feeling guilty about how the events turned out because of her, Fuu rescued them and hired them as her bodyguards to help her find a certain samurai that she once knew who smells of sunflowers.
The two samurai have now to work together to accomplish the task but instead, they spend their journey trying to kill each other.

11. Katanagatari
“Kyotouryuu” is an ancient sword technique that transforms your own body into a blade. Only one person is known to practice this sword fighting style, Shichika Yasuri, a hermit that decided to live in exile with his sister, that is until Togame barges into their lives.
Togame is searching for the twelve legendary “Deviant Blades”. Each blade is guarded by “chosen ones”, fierce adversaries that trained all their lives to deserve the honor to wield one of those magnificent blades.
The only one powerful enough to stand a chance against those guardians would be Shichika. Togame requests his help in his quest and Shichika unexpectedly accepts.
This anime offers a very distinctive art style that emphasizes bright and powerful colors.
Completely different from what we are used to watching, this anime will require some adaptation from our part to appreciate the intriguing story that is about to unfold.

10. Sword of the Stranger
ravaged the world, a young orphan and his dog are struggling to bring food to the table through stealing. The boy’s name is Kotarou and he calls his dog Tobimaru. Although a thief, Kotarou’s crimes were minor, so imagine his surprise when assassins from China’s Ming Dynasty started pursuing him.
Faced with certain death, their salvation takes the form of a ronin who goes by the name Nanashi that they, fortunately, met in a temple where they were taking refuge. But the ronin will not risk his life for strangers for free.
In exchange for taking on bodyguard duties, Kotarou offers him as payment a gem. Since their best assassins failed to capture the boy, the Ming sends out a master swordsman whose name brings terrors to anyone who hears it.
Never defeated till today he was delighted to finally meet an opponent who can trade blows with him on equal ground. Nanashi turned out to be a virtuoso with his sword, his gracious yet deadly strikes paved the way to get to their final destination and made sure the Ming’s didn’t fulfill the prophecy.

9. Afro Samurai
In a world ruled by numbers, to have the privilege of challenging the one on top, you have to earn it. Headbands are representative of those numbers. Afro, after years of training and hard work finally got the number Two, the only headband that can challenge the number one. He did all this for one reason, the current number One, killed his father in a duel to get this number.
Filled with rage and desire for revenge, Afro only wants one thing, the head of Justice as compensation. A simple problem stands in his way, while the number One can only be challenged by Number Two, Number Two can be challenged by anyone making the world his enemy. He now has to push through this challenge to keep his number until he reaches his goal.

8. Noragami
For a God to be able to maintain their physical form and not disappear from this world, they need to be worshiped, believed in.
Yato Kami is no exception. If you ever find yourself in need, a telephone number may appear, dial it, and for the price of five yen, this “Delivery God” will do your bidding. Yato’s dream is to become worshiped by millions and rich.
Not an easy task for a minor Deity with no shrine.
The task becomes even harder when a young girl, who didn’t know he was god, tries to save him from being hit by a car. Sacrificing herself in the process, she miraculously survived but this near-death experience caused her soul to wander out of her body. She then pays Yato to find a way to fix her.
With the help of Hiyori, he finds himself a new weapon. Weapons are created by harvesting wandering souls. The chosen one was a young boy, Yukine, who turned out to be a beautiful and powerful katana.
At this point, things were starting to look brighter for the not-so-young god.

7. Dororo
Hyakkimaru’s father was the lord of a dying land, in an attempt to restore his power he offered this firstborn child to demons. They took everything, his eyes, limbs, mouth, and ears, all of his senses. But Hyakkimaru’s will to live was stronger than expected and he managed to keep his soul which the demons couldn’t eat.
Left with a monstrous body, he was abandoned on a boat to die, and fortunately, be rescued by a doctor that specializes in making prosthetics. He made him an entire body, taught him how to fight, how to survive.
He treated him like his own son. He soon realized that even without eyes, Hyakkimaru could see, he could see the souls of all living things, to sense them as well. And as he grew up, demons that are after what’s left of him started hunting him. His father instead gave him a pair of katanas and with them, he killed anything that came after him. One day as he killed another demon, his fake leg fell off to leave the place to the real thing. Hyakkimaru immediately understood that he had the chance to retrieve what was taken from him.
He just had to hunt and kill the demons that devoured his body. With now a goal in mind, he leaves home. On his journey, he meets Dororo, a child, the only other soul that stayed at his side.
They traveled and fought together through all the obstacles that stood in their way. The more Hyakkimaru fought, the more he looked like a demon himself and the only thing that is making him fight for his humanity is Dororo.

6. Gintama
During the Feudal time of Japan, aliens made their way to earth. Those aliens are called “Amanto”. They took over the earth like it was nothing and prohibited the use of swords, making the strong and dignified Samurais completely useless. All of them discarded their title, only one still holding on to his pride and this man was Gintoki Sakata.
Put like that, Gintoki sounds like a respectable, charismatic person, but his easy-going personality, love for sweets and the fact that he works as an errand boy shatters this beautiful image completely.
Working with him are Shinpachi Shimura, Kagura and Sadaharu, their dog. But life as an errand boy is nothing but simple, they daily have to deal with assassins, police officers, gangs, rebels and always end up in the most dangerous situation.

5. Sword Art Online
MMORPG’s are role-playing video games, but here we take it to another level. The progress made by the gaming industry leads them to create the “NerveGear” technology and launch a new game called Sword Art Online in the year 2022. Through a virtual link, the game transports you into its virtual world so you can play in the body of your avatar.
Kazuto Kirigaya, alias “Kirito,” is one of the lucky few who had the chance to participate in the Beta testing and get his hand on a NerveGear when the game was officially out.
Ten-Thousand in total are now in the world of “Aincard” and are free to choose their weapon of choice. Kirito’s partner during the journey would be a ravishing jet-black sword of the highest quality.
After a few hours in the game, the player started to realize that they are unable to log out. They all thought it was just a bug that needed to be fixed until they were all teleported to the plaza by the game master.
The hard truth comes out, they are trapped! The only way to log out is to complete the game in its integrity, pretty simple except for the fact that if you died in the game, you will die in real life as well, the same is true if someone on the outside removes your NerveGear by force.
Kirito is one of the best players around, called the black swordsman by this fellow player, his only problem is that he is not much of a team player and he has been leveling up and clearing floors on his own. But there is so much one person can do, and the further into the game the stronger the bosses became.
He is now forced to cooperate with others, with the help of Asuna Yuuki, the second in command of the stronger guild they try to pave their way to freedom.

4. Demon Slayer
Tanjiro Kamado lives with his family in a remote area in the mountains far from the village. After the death of his father, Tanjiro took it upon himself to support them. Every day he would leave the mountain to go sell charcoal to the villagers.
As he was setting off to go back home, one of the villagers asks him to spend the night at his place because he believes Demons are lurking on the mountain path at night. Tanjiro didn’t believe him but it was already pretty late so he accepted his invitation. The morning after, when he was just about to reach his destination, the smell of blood started filling his nostril. Panic starts to take over his body and horror finally sets in when he discovers the dead bodies of his whole family.
Rage, anger, sadness, grief, confusion, and a wave of emotion consumed him only to disappear when he realized that his little sister Nezuko was still alive but badly wounded. He picks her up and tries to head back to the village as fast as possible to get help.
He was stopped by Giyu, a Demon Slayer who realized that Nezuko was no longer human. As he was apologizing for the delay in his arrival because his task was not to put down Nezuko but to prevent the massacre altogether, he drew his sword, but Tanjiro wasn’t going to stand idle, he fought back defending the only person he held dear in this world, promising the demon slayer that she would never hurt a soul.
Nezuko woke up, and to the surprise of Giyu, even though she was starved she tried to protect her brother. Something wasn’t right. The will of Nezuko, her love for her family made her keep her sanity.
Giyu took it as a sign, he let them go, told Tanjiro to become a Demon slayer so he could hunt down the demon who destroyed their lives. And that Demon is the oldest, strongest one of them all. The only one who can turn humans into a demon. The first demon ever born, Muzan!
The goal of his new journey is not only revenge, Tanjiro was also determined to find a way to turn Nezuko back into a human.
On his journey, he meets a lot of different people, some willing to help him even though he is traveling with a monster and others who will never believe that demons can be good. He will also learn that there are other demons like his sister who don’t feed on humans.
The only way for Tanjiro to protect his sister from demons and humans alike is to become stronger than all of them.

3. Bleach
One of the big three old generation anime, Bleach right alongside Naruto and One Piece is a legendary anime.
The story revolves around Ichigo Kurosaki, a normal individual with an unusual amount of “Reiatsu” meaning spiritual pressure. Because of this, since childhood, he could see ghosts. Most of them were harmless, but another kind exists.
“Hollows” are the remains of deceased souls filled with negative emotions, taking the shape of monsters they long to have a human body once again. Because of the pressure of his Reiatsu, Ichigo caught the eye of one of them. About to be eaten, a Soul Reaper by the name of Rukia makes her apparition. To save the boy, she drives her sword in him, transferring her power onto him making him a Soul Reaper in her stead.
All Reaper have “Zanpakutō“, a sword with unique skills, custom-made for their owner. Very difficult to master and to understand since they have a soul of their own, Ichigo has to train to become a full-fledged Soul Reaper to take on Rukias’ responsibilities and find a way to give her back her original powers while protecting his neighborhood against corrupt spirits.
With 366 episodes, four movies, and a new season coming out this year, Bleach is a masterpiece full of duals and incredible power-ups. A lot of fights are said to have “broker the internet” offering excitement mixed with magnificent graphics and great character development.

2. Rurouni Kenshin
The author based the main character, Himura Kenshin, on a real-life murder named Gensai.
Like the historical figure, Kenshin was a merciless killer, undefeated on the battlefield. He suddenly disappeared when the Japanese Revolution began. Disgusted by himself, by all the blood on his hands, he started feeling the urge to atone for his sins by protecting those who cannot protect themselves and never taking another life even if it’s an evil one.
Kenshin was a master in an art named ‘Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū.’ It is a specific fighting style that originated from Sengoku Jidai, developed to allow a single warrior to beat numerous does single-handedly.
