Set in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese war, Golden Kamuy perfectly blends together elements of action, comedy, slice-of-life, and great cultural representation. Almost every episode gives you a glimpse into the history and culture of the Ainu people that inhabit Hokkaido, and not only do they do it right, but they also make it entertaining for the viewers! From start to finish this series had me hooked and, well, I’m definitely not complaining about the beautiful character designs, if you know what I mean (wink wink).

While I would love to infodump you all about the premise of this series, this blog post, as the title suggests, is going to be all about the amazing cosplays from cosers and fans of the series. This list might contain SPOILERS though so be warned. With that said, here are 11 impressive Golden Kamuy cosplays!
AMAZING COSPLAYS OF GOLDEN KAMUY
11. Vasily Pavlichenko

Vasily is a Russian sniper who seeks to exact revenge on Ogata who left him injured after a sniper duel. Due to his jaw disfigurement, which he hides with his hood, he is left unable to speak and communicates mostly through drawing. He eventually joins Sugimoto and company due to some circumstances.
While I wouldn’t consider this an accurate cosplay in terms of costume and design, I was quite impressed by the intensity of their stare, which is a very noticeable characteristic of Vasily’s. Their cosplay managed to catch my eye while I was browsing the Golden Kamuy Cosplay tag on Instagram, and I just had to add their cosplay on the list. Overall, I commend this Russian cosplayer for their effort!
10. Susupo

Susupo, also commonly known by her nickname Huci, is Asirpa’s maternal grandmother. She holds great importance and status in their kotan (Ainu settlement) being one of the elders and is one of the first of the Ainu to accept Sugimoto into their home. A caring and warm person, Huci treasures her granddaughter and can also be seen feeding other Ainu children.
I must say, this cosplayer did a really good job of portraying Huci’s warm and maternal persona that I have a big urge to give the lady a hug. Their makeup prowess is also quite impressive, I actually thought she was a real old lady, but looking through her twitter feed it seems she’s actually pretty young!
9. Sofia Golden Hand

Another cosplay that caught my eye! Sofia is the leader of the revolutionary movement and was associated with Wilk (Asirpa’s father) and Kiroranke. A bold and courageous leader, she would do whatever it took to fund her movement, often committing crimes.
I adore this photo so much, the lighting, the editing, and the posing, are all so well done! In terms of costume accurateness, she slayed with her floral dress and pink bandana. I also appreciate the little map detail which I assume is related to the series’ themes of gold hunting.
8. Usami Tokishige

Usami is a soldier working for Lieutenant Tsurumi, who is a major antagonist throughout the series. To put it simply, Usami is a psychopath with sadomasochistic tendencies and a burning obsession for Tsurumi. He is aggressive, loyal, and with no moral compass at all, but he is also analytical and focused; the author describes him as the most dangerous in the cast.
Despite my aversion to his psychopathic nature, I actually really like this cosplay. Usami is what I would describe as “doll-like,” the etchings on his face make him look like a figurine. This cosplayer achieves that but in a more ethereal nature, making this a very beautiful cosplay.
7. Shiraishi Yoshitake

The series dubs Shiraishi as the Escape King, a notable escape artist who has broken out from various prisons including the one that held Noppera-Bou. Often acting as the comic relief of the series, Shiraishi brings many humorous situations that I honestly enjoy, his chemistry with Sugimoto is just everything. He is revealed to be one of the tattooed prisoners of the Abashiri prison map which leads to the gold.
Shiraishi is one of my favorite characters in the anime and this cosplay is just *chef’s kiss*. Yamaneko did a really good job of capturing his goofy and easygoing personality, it’s almost like he came to life.
6. Tokushirou Tsurumi

The main antagonist of the series, Tsurumi, it seems, seeks to discover gold in order to form a separate country outside the Japanese government. His most noticeable characteristic is the metal plate on his forehead, which he attained after surviving an explosion during battle. Tsurumi is one of those interestingly written antagonists in anime that you can’t bring yourself to hate, his charisma just leaks through the screen, and I can certainly understand why many of his subordinates have a crush on this man.
The intensity of this cosplay is as if it’s burning through my screen! The editing is so cool and the cosplayer did such an amazing job portraying that crazy wild look in Lieutenant Tsurumi’s face. That is definitely the face of a man who’d bite your finger off!
5. Ogata Hyakunoske

A former subordinate of Tsurumi, Ogata is one of the more popular characters of the show, ranking 3rd in a recent popularity poll. With his cool personality, attractive looks, and slick back hair which he habitually runs his hands through, I can definitely see the appeal. Not only that, Ogata with his incredible sniper skills was an asset to Sugimoto’s group, well, before he betrayed them anyway.
Another Yamaneko cosplay that’s really well done! Accurate to a fault to the character design, I can’t find a fault in this flawless Ogata cosplay. This cosplayer really pulled off the character of a man who deserves to be on the list of the “top ten anime betrayals” so well

4. Inkarmat

The foxy Ainu fortune-teller Inkarmat, for a time, becomes a companion to Asirpa and co. when they crossed paths during their journey. Inkarmat is another character that is associated with Asirpa’s father Wilk, it’s said that she may have been the one to teach him about Ainu culture when she met him as a child.
This is honestly such a gorgeous cosplay, I can’t seem to take my eyes off it. Everything from the expression on her face, the pose, lighting, location, outfit, the makeup, I love it all! Overall, such a wonderful authentic cosplay.
3. Sugimoto Saichi

Finally, we have the main protagonist of the series, Sugimoto aka the “Immortal Sugimoto” himself. Due to his incredible determination to survive against the odds and his amazing toughness, he was given the title “Immortal,” a name which he lived up to when he survived a gunshot to the head. The whole plot of Golden Kamuy begins when he meets Asirpa after she saved his life from a bear.
Again, another flawless cosplay from Yamaneko! I think this coser has practically cosplayed like most of the men in the cast, and you know what they’re amazing at it. Serving such high-quality cosplays, no wonder this coser has around 50k followers!
2. Asirpa

The deuteragonist alongside Sugimoto, Asirpa, is the child of Wilk who came to be known as Noppera-Bou, the man who was said to be the killer of the seven Ainu who gathered the gold. For such a young child, Asirpa acts very maturely for her age, the love she has for her people and her culture drives her to preserve their independence. A big part of Asirpa’s character is her skill in Ainu cuisine, she loves to share her culture with her companions, as shown by the numerous cooking segments of the show, segments which I really love by the way.
Everything about this cosplay screams Asirpa! Her dazzling blue eyes, her round baby-face, the lovely cultural patterns on her Ainu robe, just everything! There’s no doubt that this is one of the best Asirpa cosplays out there, kudos to the cosplayer for her beautiful portrayal.
1. Youichiro

Last, but certainly not the least on this list, is this amazing Youichiro cosplay! I was originally planning on giving Asirpa the number-one spot, but after seeing this stunning photo I changed my mind. I mean how could I not when this cool photo looks like something straight out of a movie!
This man was once a renowned manslayer of the Bakumatsu period, who eventually became one of the tattooed prisoners of the Abashiri prison. Due to his old age he suffered from dementia, and his memories both present and past overlapped with each other. Youichiro was definitely one of the cooler side characters in the anime, with an amazing side story involving Hijikata.
Conclusion
Cosplayers really are a different kind of breed, imagine the effort, cost, and time spent on perfecting their cosplays!
