Story
Rokuro Okajima is a Japanese businessman who is sick of his everyday routine. He’s sent on a business trip to Southeast Asia. His business trip is ruined as he gets kidnapped by Black Lagoon, a group of mercenaries. Black Lagoon plans on using Rokuro as a bargain but that didn’t go well for them. His former employer betrayed him and that’s when Rokuro decides to join the eccentric group of mercenaries, Black Lagoon.
Now, Rokuro must adjust to his new life as a mercenary in order to survive all the grim situations that he’s going to face along with the group.
History
Black Lagoon was originally a manga series written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe. It started serializing in April 2002 in Monthly Sunday Gene X. The manga ended in August 2021.
An anime adaptation of the manga was released in April 2006 with a total of 12 episodes. The first season of the anime ended in June of the same year. A second season was released in October 2006 and ended in December of the same year as well. The second season also had 12 episodes. Lastly, A 5-episode OVA was released in July 2010 and ended in June 2011.
Characters
Rokuro Okajima
Rokuro Okajima is the main protagonist of the series and is an average Japanese businessman. He’s a kind-hearted and humble guy who does not like violence. Even though he became a part of the group of mercenaries, he still maintained his appearance as a regular businessman.
As mentioned earlier, Rokuro hates using the power of fists or any kind of violence against his opponents. He believes that he can get things done by talking as well. Rokuro is very smart when it comes to negotiations. He also manages accounts for the group. Other than that, Rokuro also acts as a translator for Black Lagoon
Rokuro is a very trustworthy and reliable man. He keeps the balance in the group and saves it from crumbling away. He’s also an advocate of justice and strongly condemns injustice. Rokuro has no combat skills. But he’s still not afraid to face his opponent when push comes to shove.
Even though Rokuro had been in extremely dangerous situations, he had come out of every one of them alive and well. The heavens are with him in this regard.
As he gets involved deeper with his group, his dark side begins to rise up. He becomes okay with corruption and injustice. His personality is warped because of the influence of crime-ridden Roanapur.
Revy
Revy aka Rebecca Lee is the main female protagonist of the series. She’s a part of the Black Lagoon and is very loud and outspoken. She’s very confident, sarcastic, ruthless and aggressive. She also has a very short temper and will use violence over words. She’s wild and violent in whatever she does.
Talking about Revy’s language, it’s absolutely foul. She doesn’t care whom she’s talking to and will use the foulest language with them ever. Other than that, Revy has a habit of drinking heavily.
Unlike Rokuro, Revy will have no issue killing anyone at any time. She’s absolutely merciless in her killings and is a very skilled fighter as well. She feels a sense of satisfaction after killing her opponents, showing us her sadistic nature.
The reason why Revy is like that is the past trauma that she runs away from. She hides her emotional instability from others. However, Rokuro is the only one that is able to spot the reason behind her rough behavior. And that’s when she takes a step back and thinks about the despicable person that she had become.
Revy did not get along well with Rokuro and even tried to kill him. However, she started respecting him and listening to him as the series progressed. Revy starts hating Roanapur and wants to change herself. But she had no idea how to do that.
Dutch
Dutch is the leader of the Lagoon Company and is at the very top of the Black Lagoon. He doesn’t like getting himself involved in all the bloodshed in the activities of Black Lagoon. He only gives orders that are obeyed by the mercenaries of Black Lagoon.
He is one of the friendliest characters in Black Lagoon and is also very calm and composed all the time. He’s the true leader of the group because of his level-headed dealings and easy-going personality. He balances out the Revy’s extremely wild personality in the group and always thinks about matters rationally instead of just blowing fists.
He’s very strict when it comes to completing his missions. There are a few missions that his morality couldn’t accept but he still had to get them completed.
Dutch never loses his temper or composure no matter how dangerous the situation is. He’ll always remain calm and will get out of that dangerous situation in a blink of an eye. His combat skills are no joke.
Balalaika
She’s perfect in everything she does, be it negotiation or fighting. She’s very practical about things and is a true opportunist. She will do anything in order to get what she wants and will satisfy herself no matter what.
Balalaika is respected by both Revy and Rokuro and she also respects and appreciates Rokuro a lot. She’s impressed with Rokuro’s skills and beliefs and often hires him as her accountant, assistant, and even a translator.
